Finer Vitamin K i n
Gam Cuts Tooth Decay
Phone 5-F-3
Tooth decay can be reduced from
«0 to ¢0 per cent through the use
of vitamin K in chewing gum according to an 18-month study conducted by scientists of the North*
western university dental school
and made public recently. The study
began in 1942 when Dr. Leonard S.
Fpsdlrk, professor of chemistry in
the dental school, and his associates discovered that synthetic vita- fc
min K was capable of greatly retarding the formation of the acids
mat cause tooth decay.
Early experiments indicated that
the vitamin would not stay in the
mouth (or long periods of time, and
that to be effective it should be dispersed throughout the mouth immediately after the subject had eaten for that is when acids form most
rapidly.
It appeared to Dr. Fosdick that the
ideal method of administration
would be in chewing gum, which
could be used wKhout inconvenience
Immediately after meals, Furthermore the chewing of the gum had ,
the effect of driving the vitamin K
into areas of the teeth most susceptible to decay. An experiment
was then undertaken, and continued
over a period of 18 months, to determine how effectively vitamin K
in chewing gum would retard tooth
decay.

Someone committed a pretty lowdown deed recently when they
rol»b<>d the beautiful little shrine just
west of Corunna City limits, of
candles and candle holders, which the
owner finds it very hard to replace,
and feels very badly about it. The
Shrine which was built by the owner
as a thank offering for the return
of heal h, has. been visited and admired by hundreds of passing motor's and others. It is hoped* that the
3to?en articles will be returned.
L>st rites for Thomas R. Herrick,
aged 77, Shiawassee Township supervisor, for three ierms, were held1 on
last Saturday at 2:30 o'clock from
his Bancroft Lome, Rev. Ward Klopp
officiating, and interment in Fremont cemetery. He passed away at
the Durand Hospital on Wednesday.
Mr. Herrick was a life-long resident
of Shiawassee CoflKty, and was highly respected by hundreds of friends.
He was a stock fcuyer and farmer.
He is survived by his wife, the former
Grace Graham, one daughter and1 two
grandchildren.
A Lenten service sponsored by the
Men's Club of the Methodist church
was held* in the church last Thursday
evening, following a dinner meeting
of the club, and was largely attended
with Rev. Paul Havens of the Pontiac
Methodist ChtTrch delivering an inspiring address. Mrs. Hav^n* also
assisted in the service by the singing
of several sacred'Songs. Miss Leora
Stull at the organ, and1 Mrs. Paul
Lawrence at the piano, played the
accompaniment.
Final plans for the reforestation
project of the Shiawassee Dog and
Gun Club* were discussed at their
meeting on Monday night at the club
house on M-21. About 17,000 of the
25,000 trees the> club originally
planned* to plant through the county
this year have now been requested
by farmers, Don Trfcmpson, club
secretary stated, adding that applications for them may still be taken.
The so1 -"i for the sportsmen's show
at the c.unty fair this summer was
also discussed.
