We were reminded this spring how far and wide the reach of Cowboy Up is and how united we are all in finding a cure for cancer. Peggy McMahon and Terri Pister grew up in McLeod and have made their homes in St. Joseph, MO. Over the past several years they have recruited several of their friends from around the St. Jo area as well as other family members to come ride and volunteer at Cowboy Up. We received a letter from the “Missouri Girls” asking for our blessing for an ambitious fundraising idea they have for this year to sell 300 T-SHIRTS FOR THE CURE… ACROSS THE NATION! The goal is to sell these $20 t-shirts in every state in the nation. All proceeds will go to Cowboy Up. The back of the shirts will read In Memory of those who FOUGHT In Honor of those still FIGHTING In Celebration of those who WON In Thanksgiving for those WHO HELP You can see a photo of the t-shirt design on our website and our Facebook page. These shirts would make great gifts for your friends and family. To purchase your t-shirt email Peggy McMahon at [email protected] or download an order form at www.cowboyupride.com. This year we celebrate our 10th anniversary. It is hard to believe that 10 years ago Bruce Van Den Eide made those phone calls and asked his friends to step up and make his dream, the “Cowboy Up Ride Against Cancer” a reality. Many times we have thanked Bruce for giving us the opportunity to be part of this great organization, “The Cowboy Up Ride Against Cancer”! I so clearly remember that first meeting with the American Cancer Society; the ACS rep told us that 1 in 8 of us would die from cancer. We sat in that room and looked around; at that time there were 10 of us. July 26, 2013 we lost one of our founding members, Curt Holmlund, to cancer. We lost a true friend that day. His death only makes us more determined to work to raise money to help find a cure for this horrible disease. There are many wonderful people that volunteer and work hard to make the ride and all of the events leading up to it such a great success. As committee members and volunteers have come and gone, many of you have been with us year after year for the past 9 years. The residence of McLeod have put their lives on hold for this weekend and have opened up the streets of McLeod for this event. Sponsors have come on and been with us every year; many just mailing a check before being asked. There are riders that have come every year with cash in hand that they have collected from family and friends in their neighborhoods. You have donated baked goods to the “Kids for Cowboy Up bake Sale”, you have supported us by playing bingo, buying books, and entering the Extreme Race. Some have shaved their head, donated items to the silent auction while others have gotten items donated, and the list goes on and on, Thank you. I hope you will all join us again this year and make the 10th Anniversary of the “Cowboy Up Ride Against Cancer” a year to remember. - Karen Haugen, Committee Member Your Information Pre-Registering helps us immensely, and saves us a lot of time. By now you all have heard of EHV-1 or Equine Herpes Virus. This is a common virus found in horses which generally manifests itself in the respiratory system. There are 5 different strains, and you need to vaccinate 12 to 14 days prior to taking your horse to any events. The virus has been reported in Minnesota and ND. At of the time of this printing, it has been contained. The vaccine is inexpensive and is effective on 4 of the 5 strains. The vaccine builds the horse’s immune system, and is safe to use. As Cowboy Up is an event which has many horses, please be responsible and have your horse inspected and vaccinated by a vet for all equine diseases transferred “horse to horse” well in advance, and help the horse community keep all horses safe and infection free. Cowboy Up does not in any way track whom has or has not vaccinated. Your cooperation is appreciated. The Cowboy Up Committee For our 10th Anniversary we will be honoring those who have fought the many different cancers represented by the shades of Gray, Black & White. Brain Cancer - Gray Out on the Trail & Silent Aucon Melanoma Skin - Black Lung Cancer - White Carcinoid - Black-White Zebra Oral Cancers - White-Burgundy Mesothelioma - Pearl Head & Neck Cancer - White-Red Cervical Cancer - White-Teal We are changing up our traditional Saturday evening meal this year and hosting a Pitchfork Fondue and EVERYONE is welcome! McLeod is a Cowboy Town - Hitch your horse and enjoy a cold beverage In honor of our 10th Anniversary we will be adding a 2nd trail ride on Friday. Friday’s trail ride is scheduled to leave at 11am and return at 3pm so everyone can enjoy the Extreme Races at 6pm. Pony Races during the Extreme Race were a Hit! Friday’s ride will take a different route than Saturday’s to show off other areas of the beautiful Sandhills. This will be a primitive ride with no lunch or portable bathrooms. Saturday we are planning an extended ride that will leave at 10am and return around 4pm. At the half way point there will be lunch available, portable restrooms, and a marked trail back to town for those wanting a shorter ride. All riders must register at the VFW before participating in either ride. Registration will be open Thursday 3-6, Friday 9-8, and Saturday 6-10. Take a ride around town on the McLeod People Mover Food, Family, Friends, and FUN! Cowboy UP Ride Against Cancer C/O Karen Haugen 1015 10th Ave N Moorhead, MN 56560
