SUTTON RACE DIRECTOR When did you first start running? Why do you run? Those questions seem to show up frequently. No matter how long you’ve been running or the reason you run, you’ve logged a lot of training miles leading up to this weekend. It seems that no one was able to escape the heat of the summer of 2016, making training more challenging. It doesn’t matter if this weekend is your first full or half marathon or if you are striving for a new PR or Boston qualifier, this weekend is all about you! You’re here and we are glad you decided to run with us! STAY CONNECTED Summer also brings a lot of roadwork. While safety of our runners is always a priority, we keep a close eye on the progress of all road/bridge work affecting the courses. For this year only, runners will travel across a temporary bridge just before mile 20 of the full marathon and mile 7 of the half marathon. We are thankful to NYS DOT for adding this temporary bridge guaranteeing that the race continues while they replace the old trestle bridge. @WGMarathon #WGM16 SAVE THE DATE 2017 WINEGLASS WEEKEND SEPT. 29 - OCT. 1, 2017 It is our sincere hope that you have a wonderful weekend and you reach your goals, whatever they may be. We hope you are able to take advantage of the many experiences we have offered this year and consider coming back at a later time to enjoy all our area has to offer. Have a great weekend and race! That’s exactly what the growth years of the Wineglass were like for Mark Landin. As Race Director from 1993-1997 and then again from 2007- today, Mark devoted countless hours to building the Wineglass Marathon from just 372 runners in 1993 to our current 3,000 in 2016 (and another 3,500 running the Wineglass Half). In addition to bringing on many of the Wineglass’ community partners, Mark is also responsible for the race route that runners now enjoy – flat, fast, with a memorable finish on Corning’s Market Street – and the introduction of the iconic glass medallions in 1995. Over the last 20+ years, the entire Landin family logged thousands of volunteer hours putting the Wineglass on the global running map, most while Mark also managed a distinguished business career at Corning Incorporated until retiring in 2011. The building of a more sustainable organization began in 2011 incorporating Mark Landin and Sheila Sutton as Co-race Directors. Today, the race is staffed with a small team of employees to ensure that the Wineglass will be here for years to come. After this year’s 35th running of the Wineglass Marathon, Mark will retire and begin his next adventure. Thank you Mark, for your lasting contributions to both the Wineglass and the communities it passes through. Enjoy your well-deserved retirement! WINEGLASS THANKS RETIRED CHIEF TRENTANELLI Corning’s Dedicated Volunteer This year’s Wineglass Weekend will be the first in over 15 years without Police Chief Salvatore Trentanelli ensuring the safety of runners and spectators within the City of Corning. Retired in June after a distinguished 28 year career in law enforcement, Chief Trentanelli was a hands-on leader on Wineglass Sunday. From safety planning to troubleshooting to delivering food and water to staff at intersections all day, Sal was a valued and hardworking resource to the Wineglass team. A native of Hornell, NY, Trentanelli’s career included years in the Steuben County Sheriff’s Department and Addison Police Department before joining the Corning Police Department in 1988 where he’s been Chief since 2000. He was an active volunteer for the Corning Youth Center, Sister Cities San Giovanni, and the Gaffer District…and chances are you’ll see him helping out for Wineglass Weekend as well! On behalf of the entire Wineglass organization, thank you, Chief Trentanelli, for your incredible service to the race as well as the City of Corning. 4 SATURDAY, OCTOBER 1 RACE STARTS - 8:30 AM We again welcome Corelle as the Title Sponsor of the annual 5K held Wineglass Weekend. The Corelle 5K is a family-friendly event that gives runners of all ages and skill levels the chance to participate. All finishers will receive a custom medal featuring a CORELLE Dinnerware pattern. Different CORELLE designs will be highlighted each year. MEET BART YASSO It would be hard to find a serious runner who hasn’t heard of Bart Yasso! Runner’s World’s Chief Running Officer, This year’s participants will receive a long-sleeved tee, and CORELLE is once again making a special “run" of their popular 28 ounce bowl for 5K registrants only. Show your 5K bib at the Corningware, CORELLE & More store located near the Finish Line at 114 Pine Street in Corning to pick up your commemorative Yasso travels the world as the “Mayor of Running”. Inventor of the popular Yasso 800’s marathon training technique, Yasso is himself an accomplished runner having completed marathons on every continent. He was inducted into the Running USA Hall of Champions in 2007. A fivetime Ironman finisher, Yasso has also finished the grueling Badwater 146 through Death Valley. His running memoir, My Life on the Run, offers advice, insight, and inspiration to runners and non-runners alike. bowl. Runners will travel on the temporary bridge as they approach mile 20 for the full marathon and mile 7 for the half marathon. The old bridge has been removed to be replaced by a new, wider bridge later this year. The slight detour for the pedestrian bridge adds 10 feet to the course length. Start lines for both races have shifted to compensate for this change, and the course has been re-certified for the 2016 Wineglass Full and Half Marathon (Full: NY15111JG, Half: NY151112JG). Special thanks to the NYS Department of Transportation for adding this pedestrian bridge to the project and ensuring the running of the 2016 Wineglass races.
