“And you shall not wrong one another; for I am
the LORD your God.” Lev. 25:17)
Once upon a time in a galaxy not so far
away, members of a certain tribe told
members of another tribe that the leader
of the second tribe was not really qualified
to lead. The leader’s authority came from a
false tribal council and therefore should no longer be
followed into battle. This rumor of inadequate
leadership was spread throughout both tribes until
one day, to his honor, one of the second tribal elders
confronted the leader. The leader explained to this
elder in quiet and calm terms that he had proper
leadership credentials conferred on him by a great
leader from another settlement of the tribe in a far, far
land. The elder was embarrassed as to his lack of
knowledge and never mentioned the “lack of proper
leadership authority” again. Unfortunately, the elder
never apologized for his shameful accusations, either.
In several days we will begin the year 5776. We will
come to services and say how happy we are to see
each other and then, in private, and not so private
moments, we will critique, criticize and demean one
another. As ancient as the tallis, as venerated as the
Torah, as loving as the Kiddush cup ,GOSSIP has
always been there, is always there, will always be
there. It is such as part of Judaism that its prohibition
is one of the Ten Commandments,” “Thou shalt not
bear false Witness against another” (number 9).
Some of our members may say that that refers to
perjury, but I disagree. Publicly questioning and/ or
repeating statements that question’s a person’s
integrity, motives or lack of judgment goes to that

President’s Message
On Rosh Hashanah it is written, and on Yom Kippur it is sealed.
Written some one thousand years ago, the Unetanneh Tokef presents a vision that
dominates the High Holidays -- the vision of the unknown year ahead.
Many of us see the New Year as full of opportunity and hope, some of us look forward
with dread of what might befall us. For most of us, however, the year ahead is an
open road waiting to be traveled. We just are not sure who is going to be doing the
driving! We hope we will be in control of our destiny, and by our work, our caring for our families, our
efforts for causes and organizations we care for, and our being mindful of our own bodies, we will have a
healthy, happy, fulfilling year. But there are always the unforeseen bumps, detours, and traffic jams on
the road we travel. We have to have the faith and confidence that we can navigate from this New Year to
the next, and we won’t always have our GPS or phone apps to guide us.
If someone had told me last Rosh Hashanah that my year would take a turn that would take me to the
hospital and surgery, I do not think I would have believed them. The turn did come, however, and as with
most rough patches of road, I held on firmly to the wheel, followed the signposts, and got back on smooth
pavement again. It helped a lot that I had a full tank of love from my family and friends, including my
Temple family. The road also took Diane and me to Chicago for our nephew’s wedding and a chance to
be with my brothers. It took me to the Hollywood Bowl, Independence Day with one of my oldest friends,
a broken water heater (bump!) and a dozen Temple Board meetings (heavy traffic, with occasional road
rage).
Life is a great road trip, and during the High Holidays we are making a pit stop. We are checking to see
we are on the right road. We make sure our spiritual vehicle is fueled up. We change the oil of our
conscious, getting rid of the contaminants we picked up during the past year. We clean the windshield of
our perception, making sure we can see the road clearly.
Where are you going this coming year? Wherever 5776 takes you, I hope you get to see new and
exciting things, and that you go places that bring you joy and contentment. May your trip be full of health
and prosperity.

commandment’s prohibitive nature. Even raising the question of these ‘character flaws’
triggers this sin. My emphasis is on the word “false.” It is false in Judaism to speak evilly of a person,
especially in public. The rabbis viewed embarrassing a person in public as a form of
mortal wounding. ” He who publicly shames his neighbor is as though he shed blood
(causes the blood to leave the body)” [ Baba Metzia 58B] The Rabbis, more importantly,
did not specify that the person had to be there physically to be shamed.
The problem with gossip and shame is that it harms the subject, the narrator and the
listener. It is often so tantalizing that the listener then becomes the narrator and then
there is another listener, and on and on and on.
As we enter this period of intense introspection and ask for forgiveness from G-d and
each other, let us set aside specific periods of time not just at services but in other
situations, as well, to PERSONALLY ask for forgiveness from each other for our repeating
of false information, for our poor judgments of others’ characters, for our lack of trust and
for our gossiping. May we have the courage to personally ask of people whether the
information we have been given was true or false. Then, when this is accomplished , we
will have become “righteous” detectives, discovering the righteousness of our neighbors’
behaviors and becoming righteous by our efforts to find out what is right in each other.
At that moment we will be eligible to be written in the Book of Life because we have
created a living bond and not a deadly one between us.

TBE RELIGIOUS SCHOOL NEWS BY DAVID GOLDSTEIN
Now that school is back in session for most of the LA area, we are gearing up for
the start of the 2015/16 Religious School year. Registration has already taken
place (and any parents who have not already had a chance to register their
students should contact the Temple office for registration information). This year
we decided to give our Religious School families a chance to get to know some of
the other members of our congregation, by combining Religious School registration with our Temple
Open House events on August 23rd and 25th, and with our Temple field trip to the California Science
Center to see the Dead Sea Scrolls Exhibit, “The Space Shuttle Endeavor” Exhibit, and a 3D
screening of “Jerusalem” by National Geographic Productions in the Science Center’s IMAX Theatre.
About 40 of our Religious School and Temple families traveled by chartered bus from the Temple on
August 30th, where they spent the day touring the exhibits and the 3D film. This got the Religious School
year off to a fun, exciting and educational start. The first day of classroom instruction for our students will
be on September 13th at 9:00 AM, which this year falls on the day before Rosh Hashanah.

AND NOW A WORD ABOUT OUR ADULT EDUCATION CLASSES. . .
Our 2016/16 Adult Education series will begin on Tuesday, November 10th. Rabbi Sobel has prepared a
series of classes on Kabbalah for this year’s series and the topic of our first class will be “MeditationLock Out The World When You Need To.” All classes will be held at the Temple in Blum Hall at 7:00
PM. Refreshments will be served. There is a suggested donation of $5 per class (or just $20 for the
entire series of 5 classes). Please join us for these lively and informative discussions.

Temple Beth Emet has started a program to connect
with our students attending a College. We would like to help
them to continue their Jewish way of life and offer them
additional support. This way, they will always have an open line
of communication with our Rabbi, should they have questions or
need direction; and we will remind them of their link to Israel and
to keep connected to the Jewish Community. After college, we
hope to have them join our Temple, as an adult.

A Message From Cathy Zitnick, Sisterhood President
SISTERHOOD MESSAGE FOR SEPTEMBER 2015
Dear Members:
Our August fundraiser was at Shakey’s Pizza in North Hollywood. Although, only eleven people showed, we did make some
money. I am thankful for those who came, and I appreciate those who have the Sisterhood and the Temple at heart. Please
support our Sisterhood and our events.
The “Woman of Valor 2015” Dinner and Fundraiser, in honor Shirley Abramson, was a great success. The Harrell’s provided a
fabulous dinner, and their son, Cyrus, created a wonderful chili for those who are vegetarians and gluten-free. We are very
blessed to have people, such as the Harrell family, willing to cook on such a large scale for us. I know there are many more
Temple members who have dedicated their time and effort for the benefit of the Temple on a large scale, as well. Shirley
received gifts from both the Board and the Sisterhood. She exclaimed, “I felt like a bride all over again.” She really is a
blessing to all of us. I am thrilled that we all were able to let her know how much all her hard work and support has meant to
us.
Religious School Registration will be on Sunday, August 23rd from 10:00 AM to Noon, as well as our annual Open House. We
will also have an Open House on the August 25th from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM. That brings me to my next fundraiser: Honey Gift
Boxes. Every year the Sisterhood makes Honey Gift Boxes, so that members of the Temple can purchase them and give them
or send them to family members with wishes of a sweet New Year. Barbara Bolter and I will be at Temple on both dates, she
will be greeting possible new members, to inform them about our Temple and all that we do, and I will showcase our Gift
Boxes. I will let you know how well we did. I am looking forward to the trip to see the exhibit of The Dead Sea Scrolls on
August 30th. I think it will be very interesting and lots of fun. These will be great times to congregate and support each other,
as well as the Temple.
We will not be having a Sisterhood Meeting this September due to the scheduled “flurry” of Temple events for this month: the
upcoming holidays and Men’s Club Brunch on Sunday, September 20th at 9:30 A.M. Our next meeting will be October 4th
at 10:00 AM. I would like everyone to attend. I am sure that there are many of you out there that I have not met. I will look
forward to making your acquaintance.
In conclusion, I would like to remind you that your Sisterhood and the Men’s Club will be helping to set up for Rosh Hashanah
and Yom Kippur at St. Jude’s Church. This is a time of year when tzedakah is emphasized, either in deeds or dollars, so
please remember to give this holiday season whenever possible, and to support both clubs, which in turn helps to support the
Temple. I wish you all a joyous and prosperous New Year. L’Shana Tova!

To the Harrel family:
You throw the most wonderful parties!
To be awarded the ESHET’ CHAYIL is really a tremendous honor.
I want to take a moment to thank you for making it such a
wonderful experience. I know you spent many months planning
the event and it showed! There was happy chaos everywhere.
The food and the laughter flowed freely and everyone had a good
time. What made this so special as well, were all the people who
showed up. What fun it was to be with you!
A big thank you again Harrel family for putting this on for us. My
problem now is “What to do with the cigar?” I may just have it
bronzed and hang it up next to the plaque!
My personal Eshet Chayil was my mother. From her I learned many
valuable lessons even as a baby sitting on her knee.
Here at Temple Beth Emet there were many “Women of Valor” who
have gone before me and I did my best to follow in their footsteps.
Today I am more committed than ever to the “Temple With a Heart”
that has brought me so much joy.

"Family, friends, and Temple Beth Emet congregation helped 90-year-old TBE member Orven Schanzer, as he held his 75year-old Torah he got in 1940 upon the passing of his father, get blessed at a July Friday night Shabbat service.
This was a life-long dream of Schanzer's to have his beloved childhood Torah blessed and Rabbi Mark
Sobel generously and most graciously helped him realize and fulfill that honor. We humbly thank Rabbi for his outpouring of
helpfulness & caring to make this event happen.
Further, many heartwarming thanks to everyone at "the Temple with a heart" for a truly beautiful evening!
Special thanks to Cantor Kyle for taking such great photos! The night's moments and memories will surely be treasured by all
the family & generations to come!"

Who is Just5Club? J5 is a nonprofit organization helping those who are silently struggling
financially. In November of 2013, six young professionals came up with a simple idea; a
concept that beautifully ties the act of giving with uniting individuals from all corners of the
world. At J5, we believe in the power of unity, where each individual has the power to make a
difference. When people are united with one common goal in mind, even the smallest
amount can make a significant impact in the world we live in today.
Here’s how it works, it’s easy!

4. At the end of every month, all the money is gathered and donated to a family or individual in need of financial
