RICH HILL
2016 STALLIONS
Foreword
The international performance of New Zealand bred and raised thoroughbreds during 2015/16
has been a revelation. The NZ suffix has performed with distinction on the world stage and Rich
Hill, our stallions and our sales graduates have been in the midst of this ongoing success. The
Melbourne Cup win by Prince of Penzance is a great example. The son of Pentire was bred, raised
and sold under the Rich Hill brand and his famous victory put the world spotlight on Rich Hill and
the New Zealand breeding industry. The eight length demolition of the Gr.1 New Zealand 2000
Guineas field a few days later by Xtravagant, confirmed Pentire and Rich Hill as one of
Australasia’s most reliable sources of Gr.1 racehorses.
Champion sire Pentire is New Zealand’s leading active sire of Gr.1 winners (14) and the success of
his progeny has created a great platform to launch the careers of our three young stallions
Jimmy Choux, Shocking and Proisir.
The stud career of champion racehorse and five-times group one winner Jimmy Choux could not
have started in better fashion. His yearlings have been very well received and he is currently New
Zealand’s leading first season sire with Gr.3 winner Manolo Blahniq and Gr.2 placegetter What
Choux Want among his first crop winners. The progeny of the New Zealand Derby winner have
impressed all trainers with their athleticism and temperament and he has an exciting future
ahead.
The growing excitement around the stud career of champion Australian stayer Shocking has
really gathered momentum. A first crop classic victory in the Gr.1 New Zealand Oaks by his
daughter Fanatic was quickly followed by The Hassler’s dominant Gr.2 victory in The
Championship Stakes at Ellerslie. At the time of writing he had sired 23 individual first crop
winners and 5 individual first crop stakes performers and his career seems to be following a
similar path to some of New Zealand’s previous great staying sires.
Australian Group one performer Proisir was New Zealand’s most popular first season sire last
season for good reason. The son of champion international racehorse and sire Choisir has the
looks and pedigree to compliment his brilliant racetrack ability. He covered a quality book of 145
mares in his first crop which will give him a big advantage when his first offspring hit the race
track.
Our stallion roster is at a very exciting phase and we invite all breeders to become part of our
ongoing success by supporting us in 2016. Please contact us if we can assist in any way with your
bloodstock investments.

Jimmy Choux: Pedigree Nicks
AUS:
Jimmy Choux's pedigree indicates a strong affinity with many of our leading
sirelines.
Jimmy Choux has a pedigree free of DANZIG and DANEHILL, his four potent
lines of STAR KINGDOM through Bletchingly and Todman making him ideally
suited to them. Jimmy Choux’s high class stakes filly WHAT CHOUX WANT’S
dam is by the Danzig-line sire VOLKSRAAD which is an indicator of things to
come.
NZ:
AN EXCITING SEASON AHEAD… Jimmy Choux’s first crop
three-year-olds are in many of Australasia’s leading stables.
Trent Busuttin, Henry Dwyer (2), Mathew Ellerton & Simon Zahra,

Tony Pike, Bryce Revell (2), Trina Riddell, Shaune Ritchie, Graeme &
Debbie Sanders, Alan Sharrock, Bob Vance, Bruce Wallace,
Jim Wallace, John Wheeler
The STAR KINGDOM x TUDOR MINSTREL cross is highly desirable. One
source of Tudor Minstrel blood comes by way of Rich Hill's sire PENTIRE, his
own affinity with Star Kingdom is immediately obvious via PENNY GEM,
PANTANI, TINSELTOWN, PENTASTIC and ZANNA etc.
MR PROSPECTOR blood is suited as four of Thorn Park's own stakes winning
progeny feature him close-up. Jimmy Choux's own exciting juvenile MANOLO
BLAHNIQ carries a Mr Prospector double up through MORE THAN READY
and STRAIGHT STRIKE. His impressive Australian debut winner PARLAY
VOUS carries a double of Mr Prospector through FLYING SPUR and
STRAIGHT STRIKE; whilst his stakes performed filly SWEET VARDEN carries
Mr Prospector through WOODMAN.
SIR TRISTRAM appeals: 10 of Thorn Park’s 24 stakes winners have a Sir
Tristram presence close up, with VEYRON (Centro, Sir Tristram) and OCEAN
PARK (Zabeel) being good examples of the cross. Jimmy Choux's female
family adds further merit to this attractive cross with Sir Tristram-line mares.
The success of the SADLER'S WELLS x NUREYEV nick is well documented,
with duplications of this famous Thong/Rough Shod family frequently sought.
This linebreeding features in 8 of Thorn Park's own 24 stakes winners,
including recent Australian Group 1 winner SUAVITO who carries a double of
Nureyev plus a line of Sadler's Wells. Mares by ZABEEL, MONTJEU, HIGH
CHAPARRAL, STRAVINSKY, DARCI BRAHMA, BACHELOR DUKE, SHINKO
KING, CARNEGIE offer this linebreeding opportunity.
Jimmy Choux's electric acceleration is typical of the best Nureyev sireline
progeny, and this quality is often reinforced by LAST TYCOON. Thorn Park's
Australian flagbearer CENTENNIAL PARK is out of a Last Tycoon mare. This
cross involves line-breeding to the legendary mare Best in Show, so O'REILLY
and TOWKAY mares also appeal. It is worth noting that Mick Price's Gr.1
Caulfield Guineas prospect HEPTAGON is by Jimmy Choux out of an O'Reilly
mare.
MANOLO BLAHNIQ
Any mating featuring Spinning World with Sadler's Wells or Last Tycoon is line
breeding to the great mare LALUN. Other sources of Lalun are Never Bend
or Bold Reason and these bloodlines are present in VOLKSRAAD, STRAIGHT
STRIKE, DESERT SUN, CAPE CROSS and SOUND REASON.

Pentire: Pedigree Nicks
Legendary sire NORTHERN DANCER’S bloodlines feature in 55 of Pentire’s
75 stakes performers.
Mares with STAR KINGDOM in their pedigree have shown a remarkable
affinity also with 16 of Pentire’s stakes winners carrying the great Australian
sire’s bloodlines. BISCAY is present in Pentire’s Group 1 winners
RANGIRANGDOO, PANTANI, FERLAX, and PENNY GEM.
MR PROSPECTOR line mares are attractive breeding options for Pentire.
This season’s Melbourne Cup winner PRINCE OF PENZANCE is out of a Mr
Prospector mare, and 15 of Pentire’s stakes performers also feature him in
their pedigree including: ZARITA, PENTASTIC, and INTRANSIGENT.
CENTAINE crosses well with XTRAVAGANT, HE’S REMARKABLE, and
ATACAMA all Group 1 Pentire horses featuring this sire. Centaine’s pedigree
contains that wonderful Australian sire VAIN, and 15 of Pentire’s stakes
horses carry Vain’s bloodlines in their pedigree.
13 of Pentire’s stakes winners carry SIR TRISTRAM’S bloodlines, including
champion racehorse XCELLENT and also SIR PENTIRE. Champion broodmare
sire ZABEEL is dam-sire of four Pentire Group 1 performers including:
XTRAVAGANT, ART SUCCESS, HE’S REMARKABLE, and LARRY’S NEVER
LATE. Crossed with a GROSVENOR mare, Pentire has produced top stayers
PENTATHON and PENTATHLON; and to KAAPSTAD mares ENTIRELY
PLATINUM and KINCAPLE.
Line-breeding to MILL REEF and his relatives has been successful. The Group 1
winner MARKUS MAXIMUS is out of a LAST TYCOON mare, while the
Japanese Group winners CRAFT WORK and ONE MORE CHATTER both
feature Mill Reef on their dam’s side. O’REILLY mares offer breeders this
opportunity, one recent example being the exciting Cup’s prospect CHENILLE.
On the reverse, stakes winner PRESIDENT LINCOLN is an example of O’Reilly
being bred to a Pentire mare.
Pentire’s longevity reinforces his ability to cross with many different
bloodlines. Among the dam-sires he has also sired stakes winners to are:
CATBIRD, CENTRO, CRESTED WAVE, DANASINGA, DANCE FLOOR,
DANZERO, DEFENSIVE PLAY, GOLD BROSE, HIGH CHAPARRAL, ROYAL
ACADEMY, SINGSPIEL, and VELOSO.

Proisir: Pedigree Nicks
Proisir’s pedigree compliments many of Australasia’s top sire lines.
SIR TRISTRAM’S affinity with Danehill-line horses is well established; and his
crosses with Proisir’s champion sire Choisir and broodmare sire Encosta De
Lago has each produced a high percentage of winners and stakeswinners. Sir
Tristram’s influence is widespread through: ZABEEL, KAAPSTAD, SAVABEEL,
GROSVENOR, DARCI BRAHMA, DON EDUARDO, etc.
ZABEEL also offers a line via Nureyev back to the famous Thong/Rough Shod
family, this the dam-line of Encosta De Lago’s own sire Fairy King. The
duplication of this famous family through the likes of NUREYEV, SADLER’S
WELLS, and FAIRY KING is regarded as a very successful formula. Mares
that afford this opportunity include: SAVABEEL, DARCI BRAHMA, MONTJEU,
HIGH CHAPARRAL, STRAVINSKY, BACHELOR DUKE, SHINKO KING,
CARNEGIE etc.
It is notable that Choisir’s own sire Danehill Dancer has had great success
when bred to mares by Sadler’s Wells and his sire son’s.
With DANEHILL appearing four generations back in Proisir’s foals, and
DANZIG five, it is worth trying Danehill-line mares and other branches of the
Danzig male line. The success of Encosta de Lago crossed with Danehill-line
mares reinforces this. REDOUTE’S CHOICE, FLYING SPUR, DANSKE, KEEPER,
DANASINGA, VOLKSRAAD, BERTOLINI, CAPE CROSS etc all look well suited
to Proisir.
Champion sire MR PROSPECTOR via ELUSIVE CITY, FUSAICHI PEGASUS,
NO EXCUSE NEEDED, FALTAAT, BACHELOR DUKE and WOODMAN etc will
pick up nicely with his female line presence in Encosta De Lago. NIJINSKY has
picked up well with Choisir producing six stakes winners, so mares by
GENEROUS, HOWBADDOUWANTIT and ROYAL ACADEMY should also suit
Proisir.
O’REILLY is an attractive line breeding option for Proisir. Danehill Dancer over
an O’Reilly mare resulted in Gr.1 Coolmore Stakes winner STEPS IN TIME, and
O’Reilly crossed with Danehill blood features in 17 individual stakes winners.
Encosta De Lago himself has crossed well with O’Reilly’s sire LAST TYCOON,
resulting in nine stakes winners which include four-time Group 1 winner
ALINGHI.
PINS mares are suited to Proisir with a sex-balanced double of speed
influence Lunchtime up close, plus linebreeding to Star Kingdom and Northern
Dancer. RORY’S JESTER also has appeal, with a high percentage of winners
and stakes winners when crossed with Choisir.

Shocking: Pedigree Nicks
Featuring champion sires STREET CRY and DANEHILL, Shocking’s pre-potent
bloodlines suit a wide range of Australasian mares.
SIR TRISTRAM and his son ZABEEL are pre-eminent sources of superior
staying ability and the Shocking x Sir Tristram cross offers an exciting
opportunity: Sir Tristram’s inbreeding to Princequillo is particularly attractive,
and Danehill has done exceptionally with mares from the Sir Tristram line.
Shocking’s Gr.2 ARC Championship Stakes winner THE HASSLER is an early
example of this successful cross, he being out of a Zabeel mare, Sir Tristram
the sire of his third dam.
Street Cry is one of the few top-drawer MACHIAVELLIANS’ free of
NORTHERN DANCER. With his dam Coup de Folie inbred to Almahmoud,
Machiavellian did especially well with mares carrying Northern Dancer in their
pedigrees. Danehill too has crossed powerfully with mares strong in Northern
Dancer, so lines of this breed-shaping stallion are well worth considering for
Shocking. Shocking’s first five stakes performers each carry one or more
lines of Northern Dancer through their dam, his Gr.1 New Zealand Oaks
winner FANATIC bringing a double.
Duplications of DANZIG are seen regularly in stake winners worldwide. Three
of Shocking’s first five stakes performers each carry a male line of Danzig
through the top-line of their damsire.
With DANEHILL proving such a super cross with Street Cry, mares bred to
Shocking carrying a male line of Danehill will reinforce the potency of this
magic mix whilst also providing a sex balanced double of the champion sire.
Danehill himself has been seen to cross extremely well with many sirelines
including: O’REILLY, PINS, MARSCAY, MR PROSPECTOR, NUREYEV, ROYAL
ACADEMY, TWIG MOSS, MILL REEF, LUSKIN STAR, KENMARE, ROBERTO,
CENTAINE, VAIN, AHONOORA, MISWAKI etc.
Bloodlines to have crossed well with STREET CRY include: SADLER’S WELLS
and his sire sons, and STRAVINSKY, REDOUTES CHOICE, DIXIELAND BAND,
GREEN DESERT, RED RANSOM, OCTAGONAL, NIGHT SHIFT, ROYAL
ACADEMY, TALE OF THE CAT etc.
About Rich Hill….
Rich Hill Stud, Walton, was established 22 years ago by John
Thompson and his wife Colleen along with his business partner Alan
Galbraith QC and John’s parents– respected equine veterinarian Colin
Thompson and mother Irene.
The name Rich Hill originates from the homeland of John Thompson’s
grandfather Vic Troughton who grew up in Richhill, Co Armagh
(Northern Ireland), immigrating to the Waikato district in the early
1900’s.
From humble beginnings with a few horses and one staff member,
John’s original success with pinhooking weanlings enabled him to
purchase his first farm. The Rich Hill brand has now developed into one
of New Zealand’s leading thoroughbred nurseries situated on 320
acres of prime Waikato farmland.
Rich Hill has become renowned for raising and selling a quality product
that is sound enough to compete at the highest level on Australasia’s
leading racetracks. The farm has sold horses in Australia for up to $1.3
million AUD (Inglis Sydney Easter Yearling Sale) and up to $600,000 in
New Zealand (NZB Premier Yearling Sale). Its graduates include such
Group One winners as Prince of Penzance, Xtravagant, (King) Mufhasa,
Ferlax, Zarita, Recurring, Penny Gem and Pentane; to name but a few.
Rich Hill provides a complete bloodstock package for its clients. This
service includes foaling, weaning, and the raising of young stock by a
qualified and dedicated staff. Its picturesque location and superb
facilities provides a safe and natural environment for your
thoroughbreds. Rich Hill has a well equipped and managed foaling unit
and the resources to prepare 50 yearlings.
We can offer expert advice on all aspects of the thoroughbred
industry. This includes mating plans, broodmare and weanling
purchases, and ongoing support to make sure your bloodstock
investment works for you.
