HAMISH McNAIR-WILSON went to visit them to find out more 22 A SUPPORTING ROLE He might well claim he’ll mount anything, but now we know its true. DARREN HARVY takes a peek at the latest range of flat-screen supports… Years ago, when I was an impressionable adolescent, Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s little known indie outfit theaudience sang “a pessimist is never disappointed”. Whether it was infatuation or her credentials as a social psychiatrist that lead me to embrace the philosophy I don’t know, but for a while I flailed through life with a Scrooge-like disdain for aspiration and ambition. Then I entered the working world and quickly learned if you take this attitude you might as well curl up and die. Time waits for no man, and business isn’t too dissimilar. It takes drive, energy, adaptability and pragmatism to stay ahead of the game… particularly when times are tough. Fortunately, within our industry there seems to be an abundance of these attributes. While market conditions might not be the most favourable, this certainly isn’t stopping everyone. Only this month Alphason Designs reported a 30% increase in turnover on last year. Meanwhile – stop press – a release from Optimum has just landed on my desk reporting a massive 37% increase in sales in 2005. It isn’t just the specialist furniture market that is flying high, however - the phenomenal growth in flatscreen TV sales seems unrelenting and is still some way off peak. To cater for the needs of plasma and LCD-TV buyers many versatile mounts are making their way onto the shop shelves, giving dealers the opportunity to make some extra margin – and we feature our grandest selection of these this issue. BBG Distribution supply some of the finest in the game and they are another company going for strength to strength. How, in this challenging climate, I hear you ask? Well, we paid them a visit to find out! We also ran into them at the recent CEDIA Expo, where smiles and awe-inspiring products were very much the order of the day. The event, which is given our fullest attention this issue, was rammed with companies both looking and moving forward. Their confidence proved radiant and we returned feeling a whole lot more positive. Perhaps things aren’t too bad after all… Hamish McNair-Wilson, Editor [email protected] 01/07/03-30/06/04: 4,255 6 27 14 32 22 39 27 THE MAIN EVENT He may never fully recover from the excesses of the CEDIA Expo, but HAMISH McNAIRWILSON certainly has a story to tell 19 OUT AND ABOUT ON THE PLUS SIDE… Once in a while you need to step off the beaten path to find something truly innovative. WHAT’S NEW The First Glimpse... THE EVER INNOVATIVE ACOUSTIC ENERGY HAVE SURPASSED EVEN THEMSELVES THIS TIME, THANKS TO THIS REVOLUTION IN THE RADIO WORLD… GET NET, GO! This month our star product can be truly defined as revolutionary. Hot out of the hallowed halls of Acoustic Energy, this, ladies and gentlemen, is the world’s first Wi-Fi Internet radio, offering Real Audio, WMA and MP3 support. The popularity of Internet radio is growing all the time due to the diverse range of stations available. However, using a PC to access them isn’t always particularly convenient. In fact, for a listener in bed or in the kitchen, it is a positive burden. Fortunately AE have the ideal solution: the first media device capable of accessing over 99% of internet radio stations broadcast on-line, anywhere in the world, at any time. Whether it is London’s BBC Radio1 or Sao Paolo’s Radio Calypso the listener seeks, with every type of stream supported this will do the job. Designed and built here in the UK, in partnership with Internet radio technology expert Reciva, this groundbreaking conception uses an existing broadband connection to access Reciva’s Internet radio Gateway. The Gateway currently allows access to 2,500 channels, with more added every day. Selection is made simple thanks to a rotary control knob and clear LCD display, whilst the sound is of the highest quality too. Indeed, in using the twin AE drivers in a ported compact cabinet, rich bass and an impressive clarity result. The abilities of the Wi-Fi radio do not end there and it can also work as a media adapter, allowing users amendable access to a library of tunes stored on their PC around the home. This, it has to be said, is an awful lot to offer for the paltry sum of £200 and should ensure that when this hits the shelves in the autumn it quickly becomes the Christmas gift the music lover who prizes convenience just has to have. I know it’ll be top of my list… FOR FURTHER INFORMATION CONTACT: For further information contact: +44 (0) 128 565 4432 www.acoustic-energy.co.uk 5 > SOUND & VISION EYE ON THE INDUSTRY The Opposition Group team up with ISOL-8 Eye On The Industry THE WHO-WHAT-WHERE-WHEN-WHY OF AV... The firm has recently announced its entry into a strategic alliance with Moving Air Ltd., which concerns their Abbey Road cable and interconnect brand. Opposition Group managing director, James Roth explained: "These new cables and interconnects under the Abbey Road brand have been designed by individuals who have spent many years working within the professional studio environment. The range has been put through rigorous double-blind testing and the engineering team have exceeded the expectations of professional studio engineers. Moving Air were looking for a worldwide sales and marketing resource and with the current expansion of the Opposition Group's activities, both companies believe that this range fits well with our current worldwide consumer audio activities. We have started the process of appointing international distribution and the response has been encouraging. Our UK sales and marketing activities start shortly as we bring a dedicated sales team on line and I am looking forward to working with the UK specialist retail sector on this great range". The strategic alliance between The Opposition Group and Moving Air Ltd. is already in operation. Any enquiries regarding the Abbey Road range should be directed to The Opposition Group. The fresh developments at The Opposition Group didn’t end there, however. The company has also announced the initiation of a strategic alliance with ISOL-8 Teknologies Ltd., a highly significant power conditioning brand. Cable guys: the Opposition Group embrace Moving Air Commenting on the alliance, Roth proclaimed: "I am delighted to be working with Nic Poulson on bringing his excellent ISOL-8 products to market on a global scale. ISOL-8 Teknologies fits neatly into our growing brand and product portfolio and the dealer and distributor reaction to date have been very encouraging. There does seem to have been some confusion in recent months, particularly in the UK, due to the recent changes in ownership of ISOL-8 Teknologies. I believe that with our involvement, the position is now clarified and we can develop UK and International business for this brand without further delay." LICENSED TO SELL During June’s CEDIA Expo, Meridian Audio Ltd, the leading UK-based manufacturer of high-end audio, video and home theatre systems and components, and Genesis Microchip Inc., a world leader in the development of image processing technologies for flat-panel monitors, TVs and other consumer display products, announced the initiation of a strategic licensing agreement. This will give Meridian Audio the right to promote Genesis’s Faroudja technologies, products and brand on a worldwide basis. The agreement authorises Meridian to incorporate, manufacture and distribute Faroudja's most advanced video technologies and home theatre solutions as part of its audio and audio-visual product lines. The two significant forces have also agreed to cooperate in the development of advanced video processing algorithms for inclusion in future Meridian video systems. "Faroudja is at the forefront of video technology," explained Robert Stuart, Meridian chairman, co-founder and technical director. "Combining their video processing algorithms with Meridian's own award-winning audio and video technologies presents an ideal strategy of offering extremely high-quality home theatre solutions to the worldwide market," 6 Nic Poulson, founder and designer of ISOL-8 Teknologies, shared in the enthusiasm: "This is an exciting opportunity and I am extremely heartened at the positive support I have received from the UK specialist dealers since taking ownership of the company. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those UK dealers who have shown their support in recent months and look forward to presenting them with some great new products in the very near future." The strategic alliance between The Opposition Group and ISOL-8 is now in business. For further information contact: +44 (0) 208 387 1590 www.opposition-group.co.uk he continued. "We are pleased to bring our audio/video expertise, manufacturing and marketing capabilities to bear on developing this renowned brand internationally. In addition to promoting the existing Faroudja product line, we will create new products in collaboration that will complement, for example, our already advanced optical disc player technology." The positive feeling was shared in the Faroudja camp: "Meridian enjoys an international reputation for providing innovative high-end audio processing systems recognised for their performance," commented Anders Frisk, executive vice president of Genesis Microchip. "We believe that Genesis customers will benefit from the expanded promotion of Faroudja's Emmy award-winning video processing technologies and brand through Meridian manufactured products and worldwide distribution structure. This strategic agreement with Meridian will expand Faroudja's presence globally in the luxury home theatre market. Consumers looking for best-of-class audio and video quality in their home entertainment installations will appreciate this technological match." We look forward to seeing the fruits of the two firm’s combined labours. For further information contact: +44 (0) 148 044 5678 www.meridian-audio.com Ozzy... there's a Monster in the house! MONSTER PUNCH Ozzy Osbourne, known as either the Prince of Darkness, or, more recently, a doting father and one of reality TV’s most amusing successes, recently showed his support for the Monster brand of cables. On his new “Prince of Darkness” boxed set, Ozzy officially thanked the renowned manufacturers for helping him keep his home cinema and home studio wired and powered, as these are both exclusively decked out with Monster Cable and Monster Power products. Meanwhile, when Ozzy tours, Monster also wires and powers the mighty Black Sabbath, affording the band the best possible sound. Ozzy is the latest in a stream of celebrities to endorse the firm’s hugely respected product rostrum. For further information visit: www.monstercable.com All set to feel the burn with Alphason? IN THE SUN With things looking more rosy than ever at Alphason Designs, September’s sales conference promises to be a ball. The largest in the firm’s history, Alphason is taking 100 delegates to sunny Bermuda to celebrate their 20th anniversary and launch a whole load of new marketing and product initiatives for the forthcoming season. What better way to treat your business partners? Those heading to the sun kissed Caribbean will include the lucky Alphason stockists who won the Bermuda Postcard scratch competition. With less than two months to go until take off it’s rapidly approaching the time to pack the sun cream for them. The Wyndham Bermuda Resort and Spa, situated at Southampton Beach, one of the most beautiful locations on the island, will play host to the guests for the duration of their stay. Famed more for its quality, style and sophistication than the infamous triangle saga and tasteless shorts, there is no better setting in which to experience the latest line of Alphason products. French TV manufacturer Sagem - with whom Alphason recently announced an OEM partnership - will also have a platform slot during the conference, giving delegates the opportunity to learn about their freshest, award-winning DLP and LCD televisions. In addition to the Alphason delegates a 15-strong party of Retra members will be joining the Conference on their way to New York as part of a study tour. Over the years Alphason has staged its conference in a variety of interesting locations including Malta, Guernsey, Jersey, Mallorca and, most recently, Barcelona. However this year’s extra special location has been chosen to reflect the company’s 20 years of success in the industry. Those lucky enough to be making the trip must be rubbing their hands with glee! Nigel is a faculty member and course director with the CIM (Chartered Institute of Marketing) and specialises in low-cost marketing techniques. He has an honours degree in marketing and was trained to sell by Rank Xerox, subsequently spending three years as a professional copywriter. Known for packing a good deal of very useful information into his presentations, Nigel ran a marketing services agency for nine years and now trains some 2,000 marketing delegates annually. He also regularly speaks about marketing to business audiences - throughout the UK and internationally. The presentation is expected to commence at 13.30 on the day and will last for around three hours. All BFA members and their representatives are invited to attend. The event will be hosted at The Rugby Tavern, 19 Great James Street, London, WC1N 3ES. It should offer attendees some useful insight in how to keep ahead of the game and draw in the punters, which will be particularly appreciable at the moment when, across the industry, the purse string are being tightened. Anyone interested in attending should contact Chris Cowan. This decision has been put down to the “the divergent business interests of both parties” with Linn explaining the Classik product range to be “inconsistent with both the direction in which AHE wish to develop their business and their current brand portfolio.” Linn do, however, wish to thank AHE for all their efforts over the past few years. Any retailers who currently have a signed agreement to sell Linn via AHE can place orders via the Linn Orders Desk on +44 (0) 141 307 5177 or [email protected] with immediate effect, as their accounts with Linn are already open. Meanwhile, current Linn dealers who purchase their Classik products from AHE should contact the Linn Orders Desk to request these along with their normal orders. Finally, retailers who currently do not have a signed agreement with Linn to stock any or all of the Classik product range should contact Linn directly. The old Lawton Trade Supplies has been rebranded solely as Lawton, with an accompanying strapline of Trading in Technology which, according to the company's owner, Neil Drain, sums up the whole story of the company's new positioning. Neil, who acquired Lawton nearly two years ago, was reluctant to implement many changes before he had developed a feel for the company - which is based in the West Midlands and for the market. "Lawton has always had an excellent reputation for service and for offering reliable products with a good margin," Neil explained. "However, the market is changing with more competitive threats than ever before as well as more demanding and knowledgeable consumers. This is why I have spent the last few months putting in place an infrastructure and strategy for expansion. This has included extensive new warehouse facilities, additional staff and enhanced Information Technology, as well as our new look image. We have also introduced a range of exceptional value products in the area of converging technologies (audio, video and computing) that will give our customers many more opportunities for sales. These are today's ‘must-have’ products that every forward-thinking retailer needs to stock.” As a result of these changes things look to be well poised for Neil and his team. "Lawton,” Neil finished, “is now very well positioned to enable our customers to meet the constantly changing demands of consumers for innovation and value. Our expansion, our extensive range of existing and new products and our fresher image will show the market that we are more than ready for rapid and sustainable growth." However, Nordost products will continue to be made available here via Activ Distribution, who will act as the sole distributor for the UK. Activ Distribution are, reportedly, thrilled to have been offered this opportunity by the Nordost Corporation. The team are delighted to be working with an exciting range and aim to increase the profile of the Nordost brand something which will be aided by the introduction of a number of new affordable designs set to take the brand to a considerably wider audience. Expect to see a number of major launches at September’s Hi-Fi & Home Entertainment Show. For further information contact: +44 (0) 163 529 1357 www.nordost.com PURE Digital, the biggest name in the DAB sphere, recently offered savings of 10% off its award-winning radios as part of a "radio amnesty" launched by the BBC on 6th July 2005. The radio amnesty in aid of African nations, fronted by BBC presenter Nick Knowles, allowed listeners to receive discounts on DAB radios from PURE and a host of other digital radio manufacturers. The BBC's digital radio team and BBC Radio Five Live teamed up with manufacturers and high street retailers across the country to offer listeners a discount of 10% on a new digital radio, when they traded in their portable FM sets. "This is a great opportunity for everyone involved in the digital radio industry to come together, put aside all the egos and competition, and work together for a common cause." explained PURE Digital's general manager Kevin Dale. The amnesty ran until 26th July, during which time Five Live supported the project on air. Around a thousand stores up and down the country were involved in the scheme. The old sets that were collected during the three weeks will be reconditioned and sent to Somalia and the southern Sudan, where the BBC World Service Trust will distribute them. "PURE's radios have caught the national consciousness with four of the UK's top five selling DAB digital radios being made by PURE. But, while we are happy that so many people are upgrading to PURE's digital radios, we are even more delighted that, through the cooperation of so many people in the industry, those customers' old radios will be going to fulfil a vital educational role in Somalia and Sudan," Kevin Dale continued. Other manufacturers to support the campaign included Panasonic, Roberts and Sony, while retail groups such as the John Lewis Partnership, Currys, Dixons, Comet and a host of leading independent retailers (recruited through RETRA) joined them. The radios will be used to further work on the Somalia Distance Education for Literacy project - or Radio Teacher - which offers education to men and women who have grown up during civil war with no chance of schooling. There is a shortage of Somali teachers and there are few western volunteers, so the only choice is to use the mass media instead. Well known for its high-quality marketing and retailer back-up, BBG has decided to rationalise some of its brands to improve their support to their key retailers and customers even further. With immediate affect, BBG will no longer distribute the T+A and Waterfall brands in the UK. From now these will be handled by a new UK distributor called Transparent Distribution Ltd, run by none other than Tyron Jackson… the former National Sales Manager for BBG! Gordon Dutch, Sales & Marketing Director, stated: “Over the past 6-12 months BBG has been looking long and hard at all of its product ranges. With the huge success of Vogels here in the UK plus the addition of Bandridge/Profigold & Jamo, it became clear that there was a massive gap between the niche products we carried, such as T+A & Waterfall, and the more mass market brands that we carry. Although we have been very successful with T+A and Waterfall, the sheer amount of work they take to service and their routes to market varied massively from our new core business so we decided changes had to be made. Upon informing Tyron of our decision, Ty decided he would like to stay with the brands and therefore the decision was made, with T+A and Waterfall's blessing, that Ty would go with the brands, thereby giving him a great chance to develop his own high-end distribution company. As you would expect from BBG the transition has been dealt with wholly amicably and Ty will take over all aspects of Sales, Marketing & Service as from now, supported by the two manufacturers. This decision leaves us free to concentrate 100% on our core brands and provide an even higher level of sales, marketing and service to our retailers.” Tyron Jackson - Managing Director of Transparent Distribution confirmed – “I've really enjoyed my time with BBG and totally understood its decision to rationalise. Having said that I had built up some really good relationships with both the suppliers and retailers over the past 3 years and really didn't want to see those go to waste. Due to BBG's established policy of re-investment the brands have been, and are still enjoying great reviews in the press, and are in great shape - my aim is to continue and build on what BBG has started.” Siggi Amft, owner of T+A says “T+A really appreciates BBG's honest and open approach to business and the work they have put in with our brand. We are pleased that BBG were good enough to inform us in advance of their plans and to ensure that all of us were able to find a suitable solution for us to continue growing the UK market, a market that 's now becoming of significant importance to us.” Nadine Dewell, Export Manager for Waterfall says “When BBG took over Waterfall in the UK it had little or no sales and an invisible profile. Since that time it has built a strong base for us and we also appreciate and accept its decision to rationalise. We sincerely believe that Ty will carry on where BBG left off.” To coincide with its re-structuring BBG has also replaced all self-employed consultants at the company with fully-time employed staff to ensure a higher level of customer care and service. With Ty's departure David Mills has now become National Sales Manager for the new merged Home Audio & Accessories Division. Further details on BBG's new employed sales force will follow shortly. (it's not real) NHJ, a manufacturer of digital portable technology, has officially launched in the UK. The company unveiled its 21strong product portfolio to press at The Soho Hotel in Central London. We were invited to witness, for the first time, the complete NHJ line up which includes a number of striking and ground breaking technologies. Featured in the line up were PVPs, ultra slim digital cameras, MP3-players and TV watches. The event also served as the global launch of C@ndi– a unique mini MP3 range that allows you to personalise players. Following the presentations it was over to award-winning ventriloquist Nina Conti, who entertained the audience with an exclusive set. “NHJ is delighted to be entering the UK. Although it is a competitive and challenging market, we believe that with our diverse product line up, multi-brand approach and investment in marketing, NHJ is a company that is here to stay,” commented Maj Harilela, CEO and founder of NHJ. NHJ has already proven successful on a global scale, thanks in part to its multi-brand approach. Under the NHJ umbrella there are four different brands, Che-ez!, V@mp, D’zign and NHJ, each of which appeals to a different market. If the success of the sales offices in Japan, Hong Kong, America, Singapore, Taiwan and China can be repeated we’ll be hearing a lot more from NHJ in the coming years. GOING SOLO With times proving tough in the audio industry, success tastes all the sweeter. One company currently appreciating that are Arcam, as the British stalwart’s Solo has proven its most successful launch ever. Indeed, the first two shipments of the product have, completely sold out. This has, in part, been driven by a batch of fantastic reviews seen across the consumer press. Mass distribution magazines including Nuts and Esquire have embraced the product, while it has also found its way onto the telly, thanks to Tyler Brulee in The Desk. Shop staff have certainly been feeling the impact of the positive publicity, with units flying out at an unusually high rate. Indeed, some individual stores reported shifting in excess of 20 units in the first month. Thus, while the conventional Hi-Fi market might be beginning to slow, where innovation is concerned there is still money to make. And, with more publicity lined up for the sleek and suave Solo, the success is set to continue for Arcam. Meanwhile, with the matching Alto speakers also set to hit the market imminently – Arcam’s first speakers in around a decade – soon you’ll be able to offer customers an even more attractive package than this handy audiophile-quality CD-player with integrated DAB-tuner already proves. Previous owners of the brand, Symphonix, had gone into administration having reported a pretax loss of £549,000 on over £10 million turnover in its last accounts published. During this process Symphonix lost the Mission name to NXT due to defaults made on payments. However, in a separate deal IAG has also purchased the name from NXT Tim Harris, IAG UK's Managing Director had this to say on the development: "The Mission product portfolio is exceptionally strong and selling well. However, the company has suffered severe, and well documented, financing issues during the past twelve months. This new deal puts Mission on a very strong financial footing, allowing its many successful product ranges to continue in the market. Furthermore, with full access to IAG's considerable manufacturing infrastructure, Mission will now be in an ideal position to pursue - with the utmost vigour - its long-held commitment to technical innovation and product excellence." This happy ending to the saga will be a relief to many people throughout the industry who have come to appreciate Mission’s innovative and attractive approach to speaker manufacturing. And it is in the independent sector where sales grew most, with a staggering 30% increase over the corresponding period last year. Says Alphason’s sales, product and marketing manager Paul Dawes: “We are all aware of what is currently happening in the retail sector so it is very pleasing to be able to report such good news.” This success follows four major developments at Alphason during the past few months. There has been a major restructuring of the sales and marketing team - already one of the largest in the industry - with the addition of five new personnel. Of course this expansion in personnel has been matched with an expansion of the product rostrum and the launch of some exciting new products. And these have been supported by the largest and most successful ever consumer advertising campaign the company has committed to. Finally, Alphason have continued to win the plaudits in the press, scooping up several major industry awards and best buys along the way. Success, of course, breeds success and having undoubtedly made their mark on their domestic shores, now Alphason are starting to spread their web with great enthusiasm. In an attempt to replicate their growth here on the continent, the company have enlisted a Berlin-based sales team. This will be headed up by Holger Dahl, who will be supported by a team of 10 including sales reps all over Germany, who have already succeeded in getting Alphason products listed in the 600+-outlet pan-European Media Market & Saturn group. Dahl will also control Alphason’s sales in France where products are being sold through the company’s new distributor BC Acoustique. Until now Alphason’s international business has been handled from the UK with sales to more than 20 countries. To support this European sales initiative Alphason has just published its first ever foreign language brochures - one in French and the other in German. David will be responsible for driving sales of Fujitsu's plasmas and LCD projectors in Scotland and the North of England, while Maria will be responsible for sales in the Midlands. Fujitsu-General has strengthened its team to drive sales of the new 40 Series plasma screens and LCD projectors. The products are a vital part of the company's plans to gain further consumer market share for its home cinema range. Prior to joining Fujitsu, David Kenna was area sales manager at Henley Designs Limited, a Hi-Fi and audio visual equipment distributor. He was responsible for evaluating product performance and initiating promotions, as well as developing and maintaining relationships with dealers. David also worked for two years as a senior sales executive at Sevenoaks Sound and Vision. Maria Williams has worked in audio visual rentals and sales for over 14 years. Before joining Fujitsu, she was area manager at PresentaCentre, providing audio-visual installation solutions to a range of corporate and educational accounts. Mark Anderson, UK sales and marketing manager, said: "The new direct-to-dealerbusiness model, which offers retailers and custom installers industry-leading margins and protects pricing schedules, has been very well received by the market. These two new appointments will help Fujitsu to extend its distribution network and reach new retailers, whilst maintaining the quality of service that we provide dealers. To complete our team, I am looking for a sales professional with drive and ambition to cover London and the South East." We wish the new appointees well in their posts. During its 28-year history, it has seen literally thousands of new products unveiled - a trend that is very much set to continue in 2005. This drive for creative excellence is reflected in the PLASA Awards for Innovation - a series of eight awards that puts the focus firmly on the best design and development work going on across the industry. In the months running up to the show, leading manufacturers across the audio, lighting, AV and staging worlds are invited to put forward the new products that they feel initiate change and further demonstrate just how creative this industry is. All the nominations will be featured in the Lighting&Sound International-sponsored Innovation Gallery, an impressive display area at the entrance to the exhibition that captures the spirit of the show. The eight winners will be announced in a major awards ceremony on Monday September 12th. With an industry now spending significant sums on R&D, and so much at stake, the awards have come to represent the highest standards of excellence. To ensure this remains the case, the strict entry criteria has been further tightened up to filter out products that are simply developments of previous entries. Further changes are also planned for the 2005 awards: with the demand for energy efficient technologies growing, the organisers are re-introducing an award for environmental impact. Awards judging panel chairman, James Eade, says: "As the focus on this area increases, as well as the reduction of harmful substances in manufacture, it's good to recognise those who divert an element of R&D spending into benefiting the environment. Products can be nominated where owners can demonstrate a clear strategic success in areas such as energy efficiency, waste reduction, a concerted effort to reduce harmful materials in manufacture (above and beyond that required for RoHS compliance) or similar environmental gains." The environmental award will be an additional award to the eight product awards and, like the others, will be given at the discretion of the judges. It is a commendable addition to the ranks and look forward to seeing a hotly contested competition to claim it. All money raised from the entry fees goes direct to charities that have a direct link to the industry. Previous recipients include Livewire Youth Project - a centre in Cornwall that provides music and performing arts facilities for young people and two pilot schemes, supported by the Live Music Forum, one providing a rehearsal centre in Swansea and the other enhancing the information and communication technology aspect of music teaching. With this in mind PLASA really does seek ensure that, in some way at least, everyone is a winner. The awards have been around for 15 years now and, on the evidence of the subsequent impact of previous winners, manufacturers everywhere will be honing and tweaking their most innovative ideas in order that they might win this added prestige. Be sure to watch this space for the nominations and results when they come in. Competitors were sponsored in order to raise funds for breast cancer research and holistic cancer care and, to draw attention to the issue, undertook their task wearing only bras on their upper halves. The marathon march began at Hyde Park in the heat of the summer night at 23.20, with Susi crossing the finish line at 05.20. 15,000 people took part in the draining walk which, for Susi, became a jog for the last four miles, due to the development of painful blisters on both heels. However, the test of endurance proved worthwhile as it looks as though she will meet her £1,000 target for her endeavours. No doubt further donations will be gratefully received. The expanded collaboration is designed to accelerate the availability of new devices for the benefit of customers, while demonstrating mutual respect for each company's intellectual property rights. "Microsoft values our strong relationship with Toshiba, a company we admire for its long-standing commitment to innovation," said Bill Gates, chairman and chief software architect of Microsoft. "This agreement demonstrates our desire to share our innovations with other companies in ways that promote the spread of new ideas and benefit customers by accelerating the development of exciting new products." Of particular interest to us in the AV industry is the decision of the two companies to investigate the development of HD DVD players using Microsoft Windows CE technology, by combining Microsoft's expertise in software and PC technologies with Toshiba's expertise in consumer electronics and computing. The companies also plan to strengthen their collaboration on iHD, the DVD Forum's latest interactivity format. The companies signed a cross-licensing agreement to promote the exchange of innovations developed by each company. The licensing agreement covers developments in computer and digital consumer electronics areas. Microsoft and Toshiba both have traditions of investing heavily in research and development, a fact reflected in the depth of their respective patent portfolios and diverse products. D&M Holdings is the owner of Denon, Marantz, McIntosh Laboratory and D&M Professional, ReplayTV, Rio and Escient brands. It will now, reportedly, add Boston Acoustics to its ranks for $17.50 per share in cash, for a total of approximately $76million. This transaction is expected to be immediately accretive to D&M’s earnings upon closing. The acquisition of Boston Acoustics will ensure D&M have a top speaker line allowing them to offer their customers a fully fledged and uncompromising home entertainment system. With a bunch of top notch AV receivers, amplifiers and CDplayers, DVD-players, DLP projectors and display plasma monitors already in their stable – as well as digital media management systems – this will serve to boost their credentials further. Moreover, the acquisition will also assure D&M of a strong foothold in the automotive OEM business and a greater ability to drive their five key brands in this area. The current plan, at D&M HQ, is to operate Boston Acoustics as a unique brand. However, the advantages of D&M’s sales, technology and cost synergies in leveraging product distribution channels, product development and back-office integration will no doubt be felt. However, with up to three shelves available they are equally functional and offer the support to replace a conventional rack. The shelves can be retro-fitted to existing Equinox models and are nice and flexible. Starting at a mere £69.99 each, they prove that good looks don’t always come at a hefty price. Its thoroughly original, patent pending, current-feedback topology - named MMAT - ensures low distortion and greater clarity, even at the highest levels of operation. Since the last copy of What’s New landed on your doormat the summer has really started to kick in. So, at a time when compiling an issue is made even harder thanks to the sweltering, sauna-like conditions of the office and the not exactly pleasant odour of men hard at work, any excuse to get out of these four walls is appreciated. Fortunately, offers to go a wandering, soak up the sun and meet some new faces abound at the moment and, wherever possible, the team have been snapping them up. Sharp's LC-32P50E A GOOD SPORT Of course it isn’t always possible. There are times when, no matter how much we hound our superiors to unleash us from our shackles and go a roving, they just won’t allow it. Unfortunately, it seems life does go on without us. One of the liveliest events of recent times was provided courtesy of distributors AWE. 25 custom installers made the most of the firm’s generous offer of a day out at PalmerSport’s Motorsport Sensation and were given the opportunity to spend the day burning rubber in an array of high-performance cars including a Formula Palmer Audi, a Jaguar powered JP1 Le-Mans prototype and a Caterham 7 Superlight. The day was devised by AWE’s Managing Director, Stuart Tickle, as a way of thanking its many valued customers. “The day was a great success and further strengthened the excellent relationship between AWE, Pioneer and our customers,” he commented. Those who were fortunate enough to make the event were able to relive their experiences in stunning high-definition at the CEDIA Expo, via some of the stunning Pioneer plasmas adorning the sizable AWE stand. JOKING ASIDE Of course, the CEDIA Expo itself provided many an opportunity to meet and greet the members of the industry we interact with on a weekly basis. While some provide us with specific appointments others are happy to simply grab us as we do the rounds… or failing that, collar us later in the bar. The keener companies, however, take things a step further and really push the boat out – sometimes literally. Crestron have certainly been known to do this and, as per usual, the kings of the automation manufacturing world didn’t hold back during June’s Expo. The company had booked the biggest stand in their history as exhibitors, carefully bedecked with all their latest wares and, assuming pride of place, its very own bar – something always effective in bringing in the punters. As if this wasn’t enough, on the Wednesday night of the Expo they also hired out a venue next to the central Hyatt hotel, inviting their installers, programmers, PR staff and journalists to eat, drink and make merry at their expense. They even put on a comedian, confirming once again that when it comes to hospitality, there is no beating Crestron. Their full UK team was out in force, as were representatives from throughout the industry, which made for not only a lot of fun but a superb networking opportunity to boot. It also gave me a chance to get ribbed by the firm’s most vociferous Chelsea fan, John Allin. Enjoy it while it lasts John! AT THE SHARP END The hustle and bustle of Birmingham’s Broad Street was soon to be replaced with nervous glances and long dirty raincoats on the notorious back streets of Soho. Actually, that’s not entirely true. It was actually replaced with one of the most opulent, luxurious and downright classy hotels it has ever been my good fortune to encounter. The Soho Hotel, tucked subtly away down a side street, a mere stone’s Packing it in, with Sharp's new HT-M700 - at the cutting edge throw away from some of the capital’s finest record stores and most debauched book shops, hasn’t been open long, but it certainly made the right impression on Sharp, who chose its lavish interiors as the setting for the launch of the latest additions to the globally renowned Aquos range of LCDTVs. The initial presentation was conducted in one of the hotel’s stunning cinema rooms, with the major area of focus being the Aquos P5 series. Comprising three models of 26-, 32and 37-inches, this innovative batch show Sharp, once again, to be taking an entirely original approach to the LCD-TV marketplace. While all around them are talking of HDTV as though it is here already, Sharp have acknowledged that free-to-view high-definition services probably won’t be around until 2010 at the earliest. Moreover, even when it does arrive as a paid for option, there is no guarantee current Sky subscribers will be prepared to pay the extra costs. This, however, does not mean that such viewers would not appreciate the benefits a flat-screen TV can afford. The P50 models are the first screens of their kind to be designed solely for the European market and, as such, are the only ones available capable of producing an existing PAL signal exactly as it should be, line for line. As a result, whatever the source of these signals, Sharp are confident the P50 series will out perform its rivals with ease. Moreover, when HDTV broadcasts do become available they will comfortably handle these too, with a straightforward half or three-quarter downscale conversion. With this discernible extra performance allowing the user to reap immediate viewing benefits Sharp are confident that, come the key Christmas season, their 32inch model in particular (the LC-32P50E) will be a major hit. Also due on the launch pad are the Aquos GA6 and GD7 series which provide top notch highdefinition ready performance for both the analogue and idTV sectors. We were able to take a good look at many of the new options and they build upon Sharp’s already unrivalled reputation for innovation in this area. Keep you eye out for them. THE WATFORD CHAPS The month didn’t end there, however, and I found myself back in the very same, lavish Soho surroundings for the Gizmos and Gadgets 2005 Press Show. Key attractions here included DABs from Alba, a 32-inch widescreen LCD-TV from Bush and Goodmans’ GTV42P5DVBT 42-inch Plasma TV with Freeview. While the onus here was on the entertainment, a further voyage, this time of enlightenment, followed… and you don’t say that very often when you end up in Watford! The What’s New team were invited over to Hertfordshire to take a look at the brand spanking new BBG building. Having been given a full guided tour by their sales and marketing guru Gordon Dutch we were offered some personal insight into where the company is heading. Clearly these are very exciting time for BBG, so watch this space for further details. Meanwhile, our wanderlust remains unrelenting with trips to the IFA show in Berlin and sunny Bermuda – and the sales conference of Alphason Designs – already in our sights. Until next time… 19 BBG DISTRIBUTION Moving On Up It’s been all go at BBG of late, so HAMISH McNAIRWILSON popped over to Hertfordshire to find out how one of our most respected distributors are dealing with a changing industry… You could be forgiven for thinking that our industry was about to implode if you took everything the doom merchants were espousing without the necessary pinch of salt or two. However, whilst times are undoubtedly tight for many, we are not without our success stories, and BBG is exactly that: a distributor who, since its inception in 1993, has been going from strength to strength, successfully adapting where necessary, continually building rather than perennially surviving. The company has long been regarded as a leader in its field – something the bulging trophy cabinet which graces the firm’s impressive training room is testament to. Indeed, they have the unrivalled honour of having been voted the Distributor of the Year for every single manufacturer they have represented, and such commendations do not come lightly. But what does the future hold for BBG? I paid them a visit in order to find out… setting up home Success breeds success and while negativity is pervading the industry, the early part of 2005 has been a period of expansion for the dynamic team at BBG. There is no better evidence for this than their recent move to an upgraded and upsized facility in Watford. I was fortunate enough to be invited over to Hertfordshire for a visit and discovered an office filled with enthusiasm and ambition, epitomised by gregarious sales and marketing director Gordon Dutch. Having more than doubled the storage capacity of their previous home in Harrow, his ambitious team now have 20,000 square feet at their disposal as well as a significantly larger office area to cater for their growing sales, marketing and administrative force. Clever modular structuring ensures that BBG will now be able to pursue their objectives; safe in the knowledge they “BBG have a target of 95% next day delivery” Stocked to the gills... Gordon Dutch and his expanding team... have the facilities behind them capable of sustaining their prospective growth. The new facility should also serve to ensure BBG’s clients get the most efficient service around. Having been chosen as the exclusive distributor for all of Profigold and Bandridge’s connection products earlier this year, BBG started stocking and shipping 350 of their top selling products immediately. The Bandridge range boasts over 2,500 different codes and fulfilling a target of a 95% next day delivery rate on nearly all their entire catalogue will take some doing. However, with a huge warehouse at their disposal, BBG are confident they can achieve this by ensuring all lines are consistently in stock. This will offer peace of mind to retailers, ensuring them of a dependable supply – something no doubt influenced by Gordon’s background in retail management. Professionalism is the order of the day and the entire new building is dedicated to this end. Herein we were shown a dedicated, finely structured training room. Next door we came across a stunning home cinema demonstration suite, dressed up to the nines with everything that could be required to show products in an appropriate environment, including that CI essential – Cat-5 wiring. Moving on further there is a testing room, an advanced IT section, financial and services offices and every foundation the firm could need to continue building on their successes – yes, even a kitchen upstairs & downstairs!. What started off as an empty shell when they took over has been rapidly turned into an ideal building for BBG’s business. Like the cars much of their in-car entertainment products find their way into, it has been well and truly pimped. And, as an added bonus, it’s easy to find… team building With more space available to work in, BBG switched focus to recruiting the staff to fill it. Having previously relied upon self-employed consultants BBG decided the time was right to acquire their own sales force. This, Gordon explained to us, would improve their ability to call upon customers and improve the services they could offer their partners. With this in mind David Mills made the move from Bandridge. David will bring 15 years of experience to the job of heading up the new Home and Accessories Division. He will be joined on the staff by another two fresh faces: Nigel Clark and Mark Cheffins. Mark could prove a particularly valuable addition to the team as, being a former head of Sevenoaks’ CI division, he brings experience of a sector which is currently experiencing significant growth and to which a number of BBG’s ranges are relevant. After all many an installer will soon be looking for longer length HDMI “Gordon Dutch’s background in retail management has proved very influential” 20 Look out for the latest Vogels mounts at IFA “All of their lines will be consistently in stock” hands on deck to ensure their new contracts and enlarged HQ prove a roaring success. get in training It's a learning experience with BBG's training “BBG are utterly committed to the finest training” cables and Bandridge are the only company to our current knowledge that have a certified one 20-metres long! Essential as HDTV starts to become a reality. The expansion in personnel won’t end there. Gordon told us BBG are currently considering adding two further salespeople to this division to cater for the south west and the north of England. With Keith Dutch, also a recent recruit, assuming the position of Business Development Manager, and the highly regarded Graham Haines (ex head of Jamo UK) bought in to work with the Jamo brand with which he is so familiar, the set-up is looking healthier than ever. Jamo is a fresh addition to the burgeoning BBG catalogue. With the formation of an Accessories Division to handle Bandridge, Profigold and Vogels, this allowed for expansion in the existing Home Audio Division. Thus, when they were offered the exclusive rights to distribute Jamo’s consumer and CI products here, BBG leapt at the opportunity. And the relationship looks sure to bear fruit for both parties. Already Gordon has got his sights on carefully nurturing the distribution of the brand. After all, what could be more natural than selling a good quality Jamo surround sound system alongside a top notch flat-screen? In any period of growth a degree of rationalisation has to take place and not all BBG’s current brands will be retained. Two names in home audio side that they’ll no longer be working with are T+A and Waterfall. The parting of ways has been entirely amicable, as it was decided that these products were simply too niche orientated to fit in with BBG’s changing business model. This step has freed even more staff to focus on their other brands, ensuring BBG will have all Ensuring success is never an easy thing, but BBG have a battle plan that makes many distributors look like amateurs. With their Accessories Division growing in stature the message they are trying to get across is simple: accessory sales offer dealers an exceptionally straightforward route to increasing their profits. Increasing accessory sales requires both motivated and skilled sales staff so, to this end, BBG are to offer retailers who pay their staff commission better margins. This ensures everyone will benefit from sales thanks to a tangible reward – including the consumer, who will get the most out of their kit. BBG are also keen to espouse the benefits of proper training. Indeed, the firm is to launch its own road show, which will travel the length and breadth of the country preaching their message. In order to ensure it attracts the sales staff BBG are so keen to reach, the company will pick up all the costs, laying on food, drink and even offering a giveaway of kit worth around £1,000 at each event. And, if the opportunity to win a top-notch processor from Jamo isn’t enough, BBG are promising to make the events enjoyable too. With education and fun the order of the day, these should certainly prove a success in drawing in the staff. BBG undoubtedly have product ranges orientated towards sales. Bandridge, for example, have an excellent retail vision, ensuring their products come in compact, uniform packaging that absorbs the minimum of display space. Their cables are also colour coded, ensuring selling them doesn’t have to prove a labour intensive operation. The fact they are extremely well priced against many of their peers is simply an added bonus. Vogels, meanwhile, retain a unique position in their marketplace, with independent research showing that they are the only bracket manufacturer who consumers recognise – perhaps a result of their unusually high-profile thanks to their presence in the nation’s top department stores. up the bracket With the benefits Vogels brackets offer, they should be a natural choice to any consumer buying a flat-screen television, and this is another reason that BBG are seeking to strengthen their ties with dealers. They are also seeking to educate future clients to the advantages of the right bracket, as seen on the independent website they sponsor: www.homecinematips.com. With 10,000 leaflets in print to promote this website, it shouldn’t be too long before it is the consumer demanding the right bracket… particularly when Vogels unveil their latest range at IFA. Named the 6000 Series, this boasts a number of smoothly styled, incredibly sturdy, ultra safe mounts and brackets catering for every size of flat-screen TV as well as a number of projectors. Rigorously tested and meticulously designed to include everything from an advanced system of cable management through to clever rubber feet to ensure a screen can’t bang against the wall, these are better thought through than ever. The training programme should help to ingrain in salespeople the benefits of the ranges and will offer helpful hints as to how to go about selling each one. Typically for BBG, rather than moan about the state of the industry, they are seeking to find solutions to the problems that face retailers, manufacturers and distributors alike. There have been a lot of changes at the company of late, but if our meeting with Gordon, the new premises, the latest products and their plans are anything to go by, these will prove to be changes for the better. JAKE STOW previews IFA 2005... The cream of AV manufacturing with be present As shows for the consumer electronics industry go, they don’t get much bigger than the Internaionale Funkausstellung or IFA. For six days in September (2nd – 7th) the area around Berlin’s radio tower, the Funkturm, will play host to anybody who’s anybody in CE and the 2005 event promises to be bigger and better than ever. Allowing trade visitors from all over the world to meet with specialist dealers, the fair will also provide an opportunity for the public to come to face with the latest technology and the international AV press with the chance to report back on what the future has in store for us all… six of the best If you want an idea of what to expect from IFA 2005, even a cursory look at 2003’s event is guaranteed to whet the appetite. Attended by over 1,000 exhibitors and with a total of close to 275,000 visitors passing through its doors, the impact it had and the success it enjoyed is impossible to refute. And this year promises even more, as organisers continue to speak of an impressive 10% expansion on its predecessor’s attendance figures. Their optimism seems well founded when you understand that, such is the increase in demand from exhibitors, additional halls have had to be made available in order to provide adequate space. The scale of many of the biggest names’ displays also looks set to increase by up to 15 to 20%, suggesting that IFA 2005 is set to surpass 2003’s achievements in every way. Of course, the success of any show depends upon what is on display and IFA 2005 will bring the vast array of products on the market to its audience in six distinct thematic areas. These are: television and entertainment; digital imaging; personal computing and games; SNC satellite; network and cable; and sound CarMedia, and together cover the sizeable scope of the CE industry in its entirety. Definition TV look set to feature prominently, each a technology that’s exerting an ever-growing influence upon the products and services offered to consumers by the AV industry. Believe it or not the latter was first introduced to IFA attendees 20-years ago at the fair’s Technical and Scientific programme and 2005 is certain to be a year in which the significant improvements in HD display technology will once again be making waves. Look out too, for the considerable and increasingly recognised benefits of home networking to be highlighted, a development which looks set to continue to change the face of entertainment in the home. Needless to say, the show will be an important event for many manufacturers. Hitachi is just one of the big names planning to make an impression, with an array of products that include, amongst a host of others, the new HD-ready Cine Master 3LCD home theatre projector, Picture Master flat-screen TVs and Memory Master super-multi-format DVD/HD-recorders. This flagship Master Class range is designed to provide home users with the ultimate digital home entertainment experience, boasts a host of the latest technologies and will be turning heads in hall 23A. It’s worth noting too that the abundance of high-quality products on display to the trade and general public has made the IFA the number one trade fair for the placing and taking of orders. Sales reached a staggering €2.4-billion in 2003 and, as in every other area, the 2005 show looks set to comfortably top this figure. our man in Berlin... Having extolled the event’s virtues What’s New could hardly let IFA 2005 pass by ignored. Ever in search of the most exciting new developments in the world of AV our editor will be in Berlin to cast his roving eye over the industry’s wares and will be reporting back on what he finds. Plus, we’ve also teamed up with the IFA organisers to ensure that the many trade visitors to the show will be able to pick up a copy of this very magazine to peruse whilst taking in everything IFA has to offer. And much there is on offer. Besides the draw of the latest products, international keynote speeches every morning from prominent CE sector figures, the TWF technical and scientific forum, the IFA convention and, for a bit of fun, even a concert are also on the bill for those that make the trip to Germany’s capital. Yet more reasons to book your tickets as soon as possible. With its organisers confident of significant improvements over 2003, IFA 2005 will be the place to be for anyone concerned with consumer AV industry this September. Areas such as flat-screen displays, digital radio and TV and High 26 IFA pulls in the crowds like no other show CEDIA EXPO REVIEW The Main Event What better way to recover from a mud soaked music festival than to exhibit at the CEDIA Expo? HAMISH McNAIRWILSON headed up to the midlands for the custom installation industry’s biggest annual shindig… You know you are in trouble, when you’re cutting things fine as it is and you find yourself moving 50 yards in five hours. Then, when you finally break out onto the open road and end up heading in the opposite direction of home, ending up in another queue for another couple of hours, it starts to put a serious crimp on your day. You know what happens to best made plans in this context… and mine floundered on the long hard road out of Glastonbury. By the time I’d got home and scraped off the mud, a very early morning was the only option. Come 5.00 am it was time to cast the wellies aside, slip into the suit and hop onto the train for the midlands, in order to ensure I was at the ICC for the grand opening. Remarkably enough I eventually turned up early, buzzing on a heady mixture of caffeine and Berocca … although not quite as early as our notoriously hardworking advertising team and their International Smarthouse colleagues. My opening impression of the Expo was a healthy one. The What’s New stand was very well poised, near the entrance and well equipped with magazines, the essential water cooler, snacks and stools, which would later be highly appreciated by our weary feet. The Expo had clearly been the subject of a degree of reorganisation, ensuring that, this year, every stand was easily accessible and none of the rooms were difficult to find. The exhibition was, confined to one side of the open, airy ICC, with the far side reserved for the seminars. My first task was to man our stand and ensure that no one made it by without a copy of our publications and a subscriptions form in hand. In doing this it became obvious I wasn’t the only one whose journey had proved a bit of a trek. We encountered manufacturers from Australia, the United States and South East Asia, installers from across the continent and event promoters from the Middle East. It was also interesting to stumble across many visitors new to the Expo, from a variety of backgrounds including IT, software development and architecture. With people like this making the rounds, familiarising themselves with the growing automation market and its offerings, as an exhibitor we certainly felt our presence at the show was vindicated. Clearly there were a healthy number of fresh faces around willing to be converted to the CEDIA mantra and fortunately there were plenty of erudite industry members around to preach it. Having manned the stand for a couple of hours, it was time to take a look around. Fortunately, as it transpired, I didn’t have to go to far before some slickly designed products caught my eye. In fact, there was a healthy selection on the stand right next to ours. This belonged to TCI and featured a wealth of trolleys, mounts and multimedia cabinets. Perhaps the most attention grabbing was the Projector Reflector system. Via an innovative system of mirrors, this allows a projector to be hidden in the ceiling, concealed behind a flap when not in operation. With aesthetics of such significance in almost every residential home cinema project, this thoroughly original approach to keeping a projector discreet should certainly be a hit with installers. Tony Cochrane and his team were always present ready to sing its virtues and, as the show started to wind down, they did a sterling job in keeping us company to boot! managing our time Journalists have never been particularly well known for their time management so it is fortunate that the better known your magazine becomes, the more other people seem to want to manage it for you. This was my fourth trip to the Expo and this time around, by the time I’d left the office I’d already been handed a diary bulging with appointments with some of the cream of the exhibitors. The first meeting on the agenda was at the AWE stand, just around the corner from our own, where the smattering of journalists were – despite the ungodly hourgreeted with a champagne reception. It was then over to the company’s dynamic MD Stuart Tickle to tell us some more about their business. As a veteran of the Expo and one of the most renowned distributors in our industry, AWE’s stand was fittingly sizable. The team were putting a clear emphasis on the benefits of HDTV and their stand carried many products capable of showing the sharpest pictures around as and when they become available. Indeed, the stand even had some high-definition footage on display, thanks to some filming that was done at AWE’s recent motorsport event. As part of an ongoing strategy to grow their business, Stuart unveiled the company’s latest campaign slogan: “the difference is clear.” This would certainly appear to be the case when it comes to the expansive array of training courses AWE offer. Product highlights on show included the stunning Yamaha YSP-1, the first trade showing of Philips’ latest 30-inch mirror TV, which can reflect 98% of original light, and CineVersum’s latest DLP projectors. From here it was straight up to the Kaleidescape stand for a personal introduction to the American firm’s exceptional route to video storage and distribution, provided courtesy of their head of international sales, Jean-Michel Bourdon. This was then followed by a further chat with the founder of Kaleidescape, Cheena Srinivasan. Cheena eloquently reasserted the advantages the system affords the consumer. This also gave me the opportunity to raise further questions. It seems that, following a three month trial period in the UK with an independent distributor, Kaleidescape will now be handling things in our market directly. The top brass are clearly confident about their system and hope to use the Expo - and the offer of personal introductions to it - as a springboard to build up a network of installers around the country. They already have a few on board and, with a dynamic, high-end system appropriate for both domestic and superyacht-based installs at their disposal we expect the American firm to go from strength to strength in the coming year. Another noteworthy reception to make it to on the first day was at the AMX stand. Here the firm’s PR and marketing chaps got together to give myself and my able assistant a full tour of their latest wares, including the VG series of Modero touch-panels. These offer wireless streaming of video material and certainly stood out, not least thanks to their incredibly bright screens and excellent ability to relay 27 CEDIA EXPO REVIEW live action directly from a CCTV camera on their stand. The panels felt solid to handle and proved easy to navigate, proving once again the unerring relationship AMX have with quality. proof of the pudding With a couple of appointments out of the way it was time to walk the floors and see what else there was to uncover. One interesting port of call was the Acoustiblok stand at which we were able to get an education in the importance of sound proofing in an installation, courtesy of Debra Ervine. Acoustiblok’s solution is proving incredibly popular in the US and it was good to see this ground breaking, compact and efficient material being given the platform it deserves at the Expo. After all, with the speaker systems on display becoming ever more consuming and sonorous, containing extraneous sounds is imperative. Unfortunately my protracted chat here made me a couple of minutes late for my next appointment – over at the huge, dominating Crestron stand. Fortunately I didn’t miss the chance to hear Robin Van Meeuwen’s warm welcome to the throng of journalists present or indeed his introduction to a selection of the fresh products the firm had on show. One thing he was keen to re-enforce was Crestron’s unwavering commitment to offering a total home solution. To this end, not only were we introduced to a batch of swish and smoothly styled touch-panels, We were also offered an insight into Crestron’s unique solutions for lighting control, intercoms and much, much more. In essence, by covering home technologies from across the board, they hope to form the ultimate integrated solution to ease the burden on the installer, saving both time and money along the way. With this in mind, they are also very commendably striving to develop a lower end market for automated control systems. As you’d expect the products on display were all incredibly well thought through and even included a fully waterproof, floating remote controller. As well as catering for our technological needs, Crestron also provided everyone with an opportunity to meet, greet and network with their industry peers, both at the bar on their stand and at the party they hosted later that night. Thus, not only were we given the perfect back to school with CEDIA opportunity to see products and harass their installers for stories, we ate and drank heartily and were entertained into the bargain. so much to see One of the defining characteristics of the CEDIA Expo is the diversity of the kit on show; something which was very apparent where BBG had set up shop. Here we were given the opportunity to explore this top distributor’s array of solutions to aid the custom installer. Highlights included Vogels’ exceptionally strong and functional screen and projector mounting solutions and Jamo’s latest CI speakers, which proved a more than worthy addition to the highquality, BBG catalogue. The footfall at the Expo didn't disappoint 28 An enlightening display from Lutron CSE are another firm to boast a healthy mix of products and with the finest projectors from the InFocus Screenplay stable on show, video processors from Pixel Magic, AV processors and amplifiers from Lexicon and a host of other CIfriendly products from Parasound, Speakcraft and lighting specialists Rako this was an essential stop off point. The same could be said for the DF Solutions stand. After all, they were the stars of our cover last month and the stunning system their new iDyl multiroom media server and Node create was undoubtedly one of the highlights of the show. Having given it our fullest attention last month in a double page spread, we spent much of the show espousing its virtues to anyone who would listen. Some of the most dynamic offerings to be found at the show were on the stand of Invision UK. With so much of interest to be seen here, it would be difficult to pick a highlight. The firm have wares to cover the board, catering for audio distribution, video distribution, security and control needs. What more could the modern smarthouse demand? Well, one thing would be a sterling set of speakers… and there were no shortage of these either. Highlights in this sphere included Monitor Audio’s audacious new Radius CP and Pro-IC ranges, the latest Uni-Q boasting options from KEF’s growing CI range and, of course Polk’s finest flush mounting solutions. If you were looking for something a little more noticeable than these in-wall options, O’Heocha, Anthony Gallo and Linn had a range of excellent looking speakers on show which, in terms of cutting-edge, ultra chic aesthetics, had to share the spoils between them. Elsewhere in the world of sound a stop off at Imerge was essential. After all, they are to the music server what Hoover is to the vacuum cleaner and, with their new V3000 DVD-changer controller on show, they look set to take the video world by storm too. moving on… Lighting control is something else which consumes an awful lot of the attention of the Expo’s audience and no firm is better known for this than Lutron. I was given a personal tour of the company’s stand by National Sales Manager Guy Simmonds. It was good to see the firm have been diversifying to a degree and the automated blinds on display certainly seemed to be up to the task. Leax, meanwhile, had their new programmable wall dimmer – the uniquely sized and styled SceneMaster 4 – on show. This allows the user to control four scenes over four circuits and it was good for us to get to see it in the flesh. Likewise Mode Lighting’s Evolution, which appeared to be a particularly versatile and noteworthy option. Another firm to push the boat out in order to promote their options to the press was Helvar. I spent a good portion of my Wednesday morning at this particular stand, grabbing a bite to eat and a good old chat with the company’s top brass. Innovative lighting control is their game and with a superlative reputation for their installation products in the commercial sphere, their increasing focus on the residential realm means exciting times lie ahead. Of course, in the hustle and bustle of an Expo it would take all day to talk of every product we encountered. However, other notable stop off points included the Multi-Room Company, whose stand was fit to burst with a fine selection of products including top notch, THX-certified speakers from Atlantic Technology. The RGB stand was home to one of the finest projector demonstrations about, Marata Vision’s stand, as ever, came bedecked with some of the most interesting visual options about, including the waterproof Aquavision range, and we could now probably programme the NevoSL universal remote ourselves thanks to an incredibly in-depth demonstration at the Universal Electronics stand. Ikon AVS’s award-winning PODULE control system was certainly one of the most original, new boys Hide and Sleak clearly had a lot to bring to the table - and indeed bedroom – with their striking, well crafted, screen hiding furniture and I gather, at the What’s New and International Smarthouse stand, there were some audacious magazines… and some exceptionally attractive staff. Oh hang on, sorry - that was Fujitsu. And the corporation’s hot new plasmas and fantastic new high-definition LCD projector looked pretty good too! Even firms that weren’t exhibiting seemed to have sent their deputations along and when out on our rounds we encountered representatives from projector screen specialists Beamax and Projecta, DTS and many other companies we’ve dealt with over the years. Of course, for many there is a lot more to the Expo than the exhibition itself and while record numbers made it through the door here (50% more than last year, we’ve been told) the 78 seminars also secured a healthy attendance. These took place over a period of four days and 1,500 people made it along. We didn’t have statistics available for attendance at the fabled CEDIA party, but this also proved busy, with the venue rammed to the rafters for the duration. The food there was good as was the entertainment, thanks mostly to a selection of friendly faces from Wildwood, Crestron and DTS. Apparently there was quite a nifty pianist there too, although as the hours flew by and the beers flowed I’m not sure how many people remembered this. All in all, I’d have to say as both an exhibitor and a visitor this year’s Expo proved the best I’ve been to. The footfall was obviously improved, even to the naked eye, structurally speaking everything was sound and the technology on display was – as you’d expect – exceptional. The quality of visitors was also noticeably good and many key figures have expressed their approval of this since the event. It keeps on getting better. With next year’s show already being prepared, things are looking particularly healthy for the team at CEDIA HQ. They’re an ambitious bunch and with a new, even bigger venue lined up for 2006’s main event - to allow for a further expansion in scale and in order to help attract the more Design-centric visitor - even greater things are in the offing. We commend their efforts and eagerly await further news on next year’s show. 29 INSTALLATION FOCUS We're going underground, Stateside An American Dream We’ll go to any lengths to bring you the finest stories of home cinema installs as the Chicago-bound HAMISH MCNAIR-WILSON explains… America has long been regarded as a harbinger of progress in the world of home technology. And while companies from the Far East still continue to lead the charge when it comes to developments in mass market products such as DVD-players, it is our cousins on the other side of the pond who have been the dominant driving force behind the home automation industry. It has been the States that has spawned the most significant players in the smarthouse sector over the last couple of decades, with their native firms like Crestron and AMX now virtually assured of legendary status, whilst continuing to push back the boundaries of what is possible and open up new markets year on year. Even more recently, fresh yet equally innovative additions to the market like Kalaidescape come with a distinctly American twang. Of course, in an era of speedy communications, the Internet and a global political economy, it was never going to be long before the rest of the world caught on; before affluent businessmen across the globe demanded the kind of lifestyle benefits and creature comforts their peers over in the USA were privy too. As a result we’ve seen an impressive proliferation of the smart system in the residential sector over the last decade or so here in the UK and across Europe. Now we even have our own manufacturers, many of whom are bringing innovative solutions for whole-house media distribution to the table. However, it is undeniable that America remains the spiritual home of the industry. It is at the famed CEDIA US Expo, in Indianapolis, and infoComm where all the major product developments are unveiled. Meanwhile Integrated Systems – the latest force to drive the industry in Europe, China and across the Asian continent – is a US led operation with CEDIA, infoComm and the NSCA at the helm. Okay, we might have a universal system of state healthcare provision, be able to beat their soccer team fielding a third XI and know what a sensible portion is at dinner, but sometimes you just have to hold your hands up and admit it: when it comes to home automation the Yanks are the top dogs and they pretty much taught us everything we know. And we still have a lot to learn. voyage of discovery What better way to learn from the masters than to go and commune amongst them; to take that trip over the Atlantic to get a feeling for how they do it in person? I certainly couldn’t think of one and my boss seemed fairly convinced by my rationale, so before long I found myself whiling my way across the world on an expenses paid trip to a key American centre of culture, dining, architecture, theatre, music and, most importantly, business, Chicago. Business, of course, means money and money in the States is becoming increasingly synonymous with uber-swanky, technologically 30 enabled pads. You only have to tune in to MTV’s Cribs to get an education in how they do things Stateside. So, the Windy City it was, with a particularly impressive installation by Baumeister Electronic Architects my major port of call. As well as being home to the automation industry America is, of course, home to Hollywood… and few nations love their films quite as much. As a result the home theatre business is booming over there, as people with the cash seek to embed themselves in the action and become a part of their movies. It was certainly this desire that drove Baumeister’s project and the finished room boasts performance to rival any residential install I’ve ever seen. These projects are rarely all plain sailing and every one comes with its constraints. The major constraint here, however, wasn’t one we’ve ever encountered before. The home owners wanted a fully fledged home theatre, but they didn’t have the space and local zoning laws made any extension an impossibility. So what to do? Well, the answer lay below: it was decided they would excavate the land underneath their beautiful Arts and Crafts home for use not only for the home theatre, but for a wine cellar and a games rooms to boot. sitting comfortably Actually securing this space whilst preserving the structural integrity of the aging building required a great deal of care and attention and was certainly no mean feat. Indeed, one mistake and it could have been curtains for the entire, not exactly run of the mill abode. Fortunately the meticulous professionals at work did their job and the ground had soon been reclaimed. With the space now available for further development, a lavish mix of the finest, most progressive technologies and some luxurious yet timeless aesthetics was demanded. As is often the case in an installation of this magnitude, rather than settle for production line furnishings the family decided to set a dedicated team of master carpenters to work. As a result, the stunning coffered ceilings, pilasters, bar cabinetry and other ornamental features that now adorn the room were all milled by hand, uniquely tailored to the owners’ prescribed needs. Now that’s what we call bespoke. Red oak hardwoods were the order of the day and these have proved an ideal choice in offsetting the Arts and Crafts aura that pervades the rest of the building. The final theatre is somewhat larger than those I’ve become accustomed to covering. Indeed, rather than sit a small family in cramped conditions, this particularly expansive room will sit 11, in style. Mission-style seating has been deployed throughout, with each of the handcrafted chairs offering reclining options, a comfortable padded feel and boasting its own effectively crafted, spring-loaded cup holder and a mantel. But what of the technology involved? Well, all the finest home theatres demand a projector and the chosen one in this instance was Barco’s CineVERSUM 120. Mounted in place thanks to a Barco PM-L projector mount, this highly regarded three-chip DLP model broadcasts onto a sizable Da-Lite Cinema Pro Contour 110-inch projection screen, which it comfortably fills. With Texas Instruments’ finest technologies buzzing away at its heart and an extremely healthy specification, this combination certainly has the scale and ability to enrapture its audience. Moreover, combined with the CineVERSUM Master and its Digital Link, the CineVERSUM system accommodates both analog and digital sources, combining the exceptional quality of the pictures it relays with elegant installation capabilities and, as an added bonus, futureproof modularity. When faced with a 110-inch projector screen you’d expect to find an audacious powerhouse of a sound system to support it effectively and Baumeister Electronic Architects do not disappoint. Indeed, founded upon components of a professional quality it is this that helps to bring a genuine sense of realism to the movies on show. The first element to be pencilled in was the speakers. Here it was Genelec’s AIW 26 compact in-wall loudspeakers that made the cut. However, rather than settle for a conventional five or six, this cinema was always orientated towards the next level of performance. As a result, a full nine of these bass reflex type, two-way speakers were selected. Renowned across the industry for their low distortion, neutrality and high sound pressure capability, these proved a wise choice, fully adept at handling the power necessary to fill the room they produce sounds of striking integrity and unrivalled impact. Well, at least they did once they were combined with two Sunfire True EQ Solitaire 10 subwoofers, each of which incorporates a 1,250W The silver screen comes home, in Chicago Tracking Downconverter amplifier. These offer both the brains to draw the listener in and brawn to sufficiently shake them. Other noteworthy inclusions in the discreetly located racks of kit include the MC-8 preamplifier/processor and RT-10 DVD-player from Lexicon and a Sony SACD-player, for the listener seeking a higher definition of audio playback. Cabling throughout has been supplied by one of the kings of this industry, Monster. Specific models the theatre depends upon include the Monster Power HTS-5100 Noise Filterer. When it comes to any installation of this ilk convenience is as imperative a consideration as quality. As a result the installers saw fit to include an Escient Fireball E-120 CD Librarian and an Escient Fireball DVDM-100 DVD Librarian. These two appreciable inclusions allow the cinema’s users the most amenable access to vast collections of music and movies without so much as having to consider changing a disc. sing when you’re winning The instantly accessible entertainment doesn’t end there, however. The clients’ specifically requested that a karaoke system be encompassed and installers pride themselves on meeting every request, no matter how questionable it is in taste. In fact, in this instance they pulled out all the stops, not only working the system itself into the mix, but tying in a couple of wireless microphones and indeed a camera to allow the performances to be recorded or relayed around the home. Now that’s entertainment… or the most advanced route to extreme embarrassment around depending on which way you look at it. When The Clash sang “who needs remote control” back in the 1970s they probably couldn’t have predicted how all pervasive this would be just a few decades later. It is the automated network that makes the modern smarthouse so smart and this Chicago-based residence is nigh on top of that particular class. Baumeister Electronic Architects decided to plump for a batch of the almost ubiquitous Crestron touch-panels to operate the AV kit. A selection of this industry leader’s finest kit made the grade, including keypads, CT-1000 touch-panels and a TMPC-10 web tablet. Their characteristically colourful and intuitive interfaces serve the users with aplomb, affording them not only the mastery of all their AV kit, but also fully networked control of the intelligent lighting system that graces the theatre and beyond. Attractive period sconces and alabaster pendants adorn the venue helping to reassert the period aura, yet these are powered by some of the most up to the minute technology around. Behind the scenes there is a whole host of Crestron’s finest crops including six CLX1DIM4 four-Zone Dimmer Modules, a Crestron CLX-1DIM8 eight-Zone Incandescent Dimmer and a Crestron CLX-2DIM2 Two-Circuit Dimming Module. It was an excellent opportunity to see the fruits of Crestron’s drive for a total home solution in action and it quickly became obvious that their work in the lighting sphere is as impressive as the smart control they’ve long afforded. This rounded off the cinema room with aplomb, ensuring the convenience and aesthetics matched the performance of the audacious audio-visual set up. The care and attention paid in the digging process was equalled by the care and attention paid in the development of the cinema room, from its handcrafted furniture through to its wireless microphones. Every desire of the lucky residents was met in the most extraordinary way. And the result? An astonishing home cinema room, that was enough to leave me aghast, drooling with jealousy and in need of a significant pay rise! It was a learning experience in just what can be achieved in the country of the crib and undoubtedly made my trek worthwhile. Travelling from Newcastle to Land’s End - John O'Groats and back in two days, they covered a total of 1,750 miles. The ride took place in aid of the Northern Air Ambulance who are currently only able to run one of their three helicopters due to funding shortages. Mode Lighting were among the sponsors of the event and the 17 riders who took part are aiming to raise over £10,000 for the appeal! We wish them well. PAYING WITH PLATINUM Sony has reaffirmed its commitment to the most progressive end of our market through its Professional Solutions Europe division, who have signed up to ISE 2006 as a platinum sponsor. “Sony is unique in being able to offer a complete, end-to-end, integrated AV & IT solution and we felt that ISE was an excellent forum for us to showcase our range of display screens and projectors, network video monitoring and videoconferencing solutions and visual communications applications,” said Ian Collis, vice-president of marketing for Sony Europe. This is the latest step down the road for the organisers who are looking to increase the show size by an ambitious 60% for 2006. For further information contact: www.iseurope.org THE GREAT EASTERN PALME, the Middle East’s Professional Sound, Light, Music, Audio Visual and Systems Integration Exhibition, is now more relevant to the custom install industry than ever. In 2006 the event will comprise three dedicated vertical shows, one of which is named Install. This promises to provide a dedicated business arena for the commercial and residential audio-visual installation sector. Its focus area will be on the latest technological trends and developments for both the home and commercial properties. With industry giants including Crestron and AMX already snapping up exhibition space this could prove another event worthy of your attention. After all, the install market in the Middle East is mushrooming and several high-profile British firms are known to have done business in this area. With major international manufacturers, key regional suppliers, installers and integrators from across the board present, a promised expansion on last year’s event and several thousand good quality attendees expected, we at What’s New will certainly be trying to wangle our way out there! For further information contact: www.palmeonline.com 33 > SOUND & VISION WHAT’S NEW? INSTALLER ON THE MARKET While the Hi-Fi market continues to struggle, the CI market seems to be riding the storm with ease. In fact, the “record number of exhibitor bookings and added space secured for the Integrated Systems Europe 2006” suggests, according to its organisers, that “the market is buoyant and confident.” Further evidence for this could be cited in the record results recently achieved at InfoComm 2005. The event, which was held in Las Vegas in June, is the largest annual conference and exhibition for audio-visual buyers and sellers. This year it reportedly grew 15% over 2004, attracting over 26,000 AV professionals. There was also a strong increase in the number of AV and IT managers making the trip. For the organisers of ISE 2006, this is seen as excellent news. “The success of InfoComm 2005,” 2006 managing director Mike Blackman explained, “demonstrates that the market is growing stronger by the year as more professionals and installers look to exhibitions as the key medium to source new products and see the latest innovations in technology.” ISE, much like the market itself, is also going from strength to strength. “With the majority of past exhibitors returning along with an increasing number of newcomers to the event, ISE is,” Blackman continued, “now the definitive European showcase for the AV systems integration market.” Thierry Ollivier, sales manager of exhibitor projectiondesign, puts the success of the show, still in its relative infancy, down to several factors. He believes it to be “the one event where you can meet with your partners, AV systems integrators and professionals from all over Europe.” He also commended the quality of visitor, the professionalism of the organisers and the close working relationship fostered between them and the exhibitors. Finally, Thierry finished: “We see the future success of the AV systems integration market through convergence. ISE is the perfect showcase to leverage these technologies under one roof to become the show for professionals.” As exhibitors ourselves in 2005, we were certainly impressed with the show and will, no doubt, be returning to the fold in 2006, seeking to support our blossoming market. The flushmountable Ci130.2QS and Ci130.2QR boast KEF’s Uni-Q driver array technology at heart, helping them to fill any room with a smooth, rich and detailed sound. With square and rounded options available they are appropriate for use both in-wall and in-ceiling, whilst the option of moisture-resistant brackets and fixings ensure they will be comfortable in the most testing of environments. The speakers will sell for around £100 a piece and are worth every penny. For further information contact: +44 (0) 162 267 2261 www.kef.com 35 > SOUND & VISION WHAT’S NEW? INSTALLER WELL ON TRACK Marata Vision has been appointed as a key distributor for Goelst's electrically operated curtain track systems. The agreement means that Marata can now offer total lighting control systems through control of both daylight and artificial lighting. The trade-only distributors are offering Goelst's new generation low-voltage curtain track systems. The G-rail 6200 and 6300 models incorporate 24V motors and are suitable for curtain types ranging from lightweight domestic through to heavyweight contract. Powerful but quiet, the systems can be programmed with intermediate stop settings. The curtain systems were demonstrated on Marata's stand at the CEDIA Expo 2005 UK, alongside a host of other great products. Designed to recognise the achievements of residential dealers who have embraced Crestron's Total Home Technology solutions, the scheme is open to Crestron dealers and installers worldwide with a closing date for entries of 15th August 2005. "There is some really terrific work being done by Crestron partners throughout the UK and Europe," says Robin van Meeuwen, MD of Crestron UK, "and these new awards are the perfect worldwide showcase for their achievements. In the future I see these awards being the benchmark for excellence in custom installation." The wide-ranging categories already announced include: The Ultimate Connected Home, Innovative Design, Most Extreme Makeover and Biggest, Baddest Home. An elite panel of judges will select the winners and we look forward to the results… For further information contact: +44 (0) 208 439 7272 www.crestron.co.uk APARTMENTS SCORE Two large installation projects involving Mode Lighting’s wares have recently been completed. For starters, 300 apartments have been fitted with a SolitairePLUS single-channel, self-contained dimmer and unit for their bedroom and living area. Custom plate finishes were created to suit the project requirements, while infrared control has also been supplied. In a separate development 30 apartments have been completed with a scene setting control system in each. Again, custom plate finishes were provided for that aesthetic sheen. As a result of this inclusion each now boasts 18-channels of lighting controlled over seven areas, with a master control at the front door and bedside. The modular system allows for the possibility of AV integration, meaning the prospective owners of the flats will be able to wallow in this technological wizardry when they move in. Eschewing the standard approach adopted by many distributors, which simply offers a battery of links to manufacturers’ sites, CSE’s new website provides full descriptions, specifications and a download library for every product in its comprehensive portfolio. High-and low-resolution images, owners’ manuals and software upgrades are available for a wide range of products including those from Audio Pro, InFocus ScreenPlay, Lexicon, Liberty, Living Control, Parasound, Pixel Magic Systems, Primare, Rako, Revel and SpeakerCraft. Its ambitious databasedriven topology provides easy and rapid navigation through a vast store of information, which is presented clearly and concisely. Perhaps the most impressive element is the site’s uniquely powerful System Designer feature, which helps visitors to design a bespoke home theatre or multi-room system according to their individual needs, by selecting the ideal product combinations from CSE’s range. The company has been successfully serving both large retail multiples and independent retailers worldwide for over 25 years, with a range of products to support all the major plasma and LCD manufacturers. AVF have, in their prestigious history, been responsible for producing a number of industry firsts, including the first volume TV & speaker mounts in the world and the first lifetime warranty on all TV wall mounts. With mounts becoming increasingly big business in the progressive AV sector, it is no surprise that AVF’s boffins have been knocking their heads together to come up with something special for this market. And their solutions, we hear, are on the way. Details of their Nexus, set for a September launch, are still scant, but we are told to expect a retail invasion. Already a promotional campaign is in full swing, retailers everywhere are being contacted and journalists are being teased with press releases. The show is currently filming for its autumn series and is seeking to give some significant airtime to home automation. Having already compiled some significant footage at 2005’s CEDIA Expo, its team are now looking to film an extravagant high-tech home in the UK as part of a 12-minute feature. If you have worked on something suitable and can get access to the home for a single day's shooting you could benefit from some substantial promotion. Your customer's anonymity and the location of the property would be protected, and neither you nor your customer would actually appear on screen. However, your company would receive a credit and web link from The Gadget Show's site and the prestige of appearing on national televsion. Custom installer deckorum featured on the show last year, generating a great profile for their business and direct sales enquiries. How v new a t the a n as she e y workload ever, xp ssocia t tion… lains all th o at’s EXCEL-LENT NEWS We've just witnessed the most successful ever CEDIA Expo at the International Convention Centre in Birmingham. This year's event featured over 100 exhibiting companies and attracted over 4,700 visitors, representing over a 50% increase on 2004. The vast majority of these visitors took advantage of the extensive CEDIA education programme, consisting of 78 seminars, workshops and other training events. Compare this to CEDIA Expo 2002, when we offered just 22 training courses, and you can see how demand for education has rocketed in the space of just three years. As an industry we are growing, and the International Convention Centre has no room for us to expand. That's why it's bye-bye Birmingham, and hello ExCeL London - a venue that will be the home of CEDIA Expo for the next three years, beginning in 2006 when it will take place from 20-22 June 2006. ExCeL London is a high-class, well-integrated venue that will give us better allround facilities than we are used to in Birmingham, provide all the room that we need to expand our CEDIA education programme and deliver bigger, more coherent space for exhibitors and visitors. It's easy to get to from within the UK and, because of its proximity to London City Airport, from overseas too. And it has all the accommodation and social areas that we could hope for. The venue received a resounding thumbs-up from all 26 delegates who attended the recent CEDIA Manufacturer's Council meeting held at ExCeL - and we're sure you'll appreciate it too. In fact, why not check out ExCeL for yourselves at the forthcoming London Homebuilding & Renovating Show (30 September - 2 October 2005) or the Show House 2005 event for house builders (1 - 3 November 2005) each of which CEDIA has strong involvement. DATES FOR REGIONAL TRAINING AND AGM The Autumn Regional Training event, which is combined with the CEDIA Annual General Meeting, will be held on Wednesday and Thursday 12th and 13th October at the Thistle Hotel in Brighton. Details of the education programme and booking information will follow shortly. NEW MEMBERS Finally, since our last bulletin in the magazine, we are pleased to confirm that the following companies have been accepted as CEDIA members. Membership of CEDIA UK now stands at 400. Absolute Audio Systems Ltd Artcoustic UK Ltd Audire sarl Burmester Audiosysteme GmbH Fairburn Engineering Ltd Janson Computers Laservision Sevenoaks Sound & Vision - Maidstone Source 1 International Ltd Stardraw.com Ltd Telestial Ltd TVSAT SPEAKING UP Since the 2005 Expo took place, it has received some great testimonies from across the industry. Said Matt Nettlefold, Product Manager, Beyerdynamic: "It's exceptionally good this year - we've doubled our stand size, taken a good position and generated plenty of good brand exposure and interest in our products. Most importantly of all, we're seeing the right kind of people too." Meanwhile John Allin, Sales Director at Crestron UK, was equally impressed: "The best CEDIA Expo yet. It is always a good show but this year it has really been taken to another level. We've had tremendous feedback with great interest from existing customers as well as lots of enquiries from potential clients. The show has really rewarded our investment." LEGAL ADVICE FOR MEMBERS We are delighted to announce another benefit of CEDIA membership through a new relationship with a firm of legal firm, PPC, who can offer outsourced employment law and personnel advice to members. It is staggering fact that, between 1997 and 2006, there will have been 36 new pieces of employment legislation directly affecting employers. Many of these require significant changes to the ways companies operate and will have implications for employment documentation. In addition, during this time, Parliament has raised limits of compensation and made it easier to win 'unfair dismissal' claims where employers fail to carry out correct procedures. PPC have agreed to provide a courtesy 'health check' to all CEDIA members. By reviewing documentation and recent history of the company, they will identify areas of risk. By retaining PPC's services, CEDIA members can reduce or remove the risks and develop their human resource function. For more details speak to Jeremy Howat at PPC on 07836 212834, or email [email protected]. CERTIFIABLE SUCCESSES The CEDIA Professional Certification programme continues to go from strength to strength. At this year's CEDIA Expo we saw more installers going for certification than last year, and we are delighted to announce that the event saw over 30 Designer and Installer graduates win their pips. These included designers from Beyond the Invisible, D&T Electronics, Flammingbox and Sevenoaks Sound and Vision. All seminars in the CEDIA education programme are accredited with CEU (Continuing Education Unit) points allowing Certified Installers to maintain their status. However, we also encourage manufacturers to register their training courses as part of this Professional Certification Programme. This aspect of the programme is very much in its infancy, featuring at present, six courses from AMX and one course from ARCAM. Like all CEDIA training courses, each of these new manufacturer courses offers certified members the relevant number of CEU's and is a great way for manufacturers to add quantifiable value to their training programmes.
