Virginia Dressage Association,
Inc. - Charlottesville Chapter

Hi Everyone,
Summer is nearly over, and it has been
one of the coolest summers on record,
which is nice for our riding time. The
plentiful rain means lots of hay for the
winter and lots of grass for your horses
to eat, so watch out if your horse is one
of the ones sensitive to carbohydrates in
the grass.
The fact that we have not had a
recognized show this year has meant a
respite for all of our volunteers, but I do
hope everyone is getting good and
rested for next year. We will be having
our licensed show at Culpeper in 2010
and we will need all hands on deck!
This is gong to be a big undertaking for
our club: two one day shows over
Labor Day weekend. Please mark it in
your calendars!
Our August pool & pizza party was a
success and fun, and some of us even
got in the pool this time! I’’d like to
express many thanks to Sherri Booye
who so generously hosts the party for us
yearly.
It’’s time to start thinking about the
Board for next year. If you have plans,
ideas or ambitions please step forward
and run for a position as we need your
energy and commitment.
[email protected] if you are able
to! Not only is it more fun to be at a
show where you are involved but it
helps us run these shows and do so at a
profit for the State funds. Even if you
are planning to ride, there will be jobs
you can do. If you’’d like to get to know
more people in our dressage
community, this is a great way to meet
people. There’’s a lot of camaraderie
built up amongst the folks who work at
these shows.
Also please think about things you
would like to hear about at an
““evening with””, or maybe as a seminar.
We need ideas for winter-time activities
and the board is open to your inputs!
We hope to see you at the next meeting
on Sept 14th at Topeka’’s Steak House on
Rte 250 in Charlottesville at 7 pm.
Yours truly,
Melyni Worth
.
October will bring us the GAIGS remember you have two chances left to
qualify for them: 1) the VADA-NOVA
show at Morven Park on the 12/13th of
September and the VADA-Fred shows at
Rosemount the following weekend. We
will be needing volunteers for the
GAIGS. If you have not heard from
Holly Veloso asking you to volunteer,
please email her at

A volunteer coordinator is needed for
the 2010 Licensed Competition which
our chapter will be hosting at
Commonwealth Park in Culpeper. Beth
Marsinko is a strong possibility to head
up this team. Also, volunteers are
needed for this large undertaking. The
board voted yes to awarding a blue
grooming towel with our logo on it
along with a blue ribbon to first place
winners.
A board discussion was held regarding
the prizes to be offered at our 2010
Licensed Show. Gardy Bloemers has
volunteered to be in charge of
sponsorship and prizes for our licensed
show.

Amy Gadsden has offered to store our
chapter's "licensed box materials" in her

Exceptional Mare for Sale Esculira, 16.3h imported elite-eligible
Hanoverian mare by Escudo I, ““Echo””
is showing Second Level with average
scores of 67% (up to 70%). She is
schooling and ready to show Third
Level. Her show career began late last
summer, with one show at First Level,
average score over 69%. Her gaits are
expressive, consistently scoring 8’’s, and
although her movement is big, she is
lovely to sit. She was previously with
an FEI trainer for seven months, doing
4 and 3 tempis, passage and piaffe in
hand. Echo has the talent and training
background to move up the levels
readily. She has a super work ethic and
tries really hard for the rider. She is
sensitive to light aids, and is quite
pleasantly forward. She is quiet and
friendly around the barn, easy to
handle. Always in the top two ribbons,
she would be a good match for the
ambitious rider. Priced at $35K.

BOARDING/ STALLS
Stall available-Broadview Farm,
Caroline County, Woodford, small barn,
full care provided, matted stalls,
excellent hay. Private turn out, each
with own run-in-shed. Large
schooling/jumping arena with lights,
also a standard size dressage arena,
round pen. Convalescent care available
and retirees welcome. Family farm with
personalized care. Contact Barb Ellis,
804-448-4921.
Searching for Stall - Fellow dressage
riders, do you have room at your
farm for my mare, O Jackie? I live in
Gordonsville, work in Charlottesville,
ride in Ruckersville, so a
location anywhere near where I live or
ride and/or en route to Charlottesville
would be ideal. Don't need fancy, but
do need good food, turnout, and access
to a stall. A large flat area to do
dressage work with trails to explore
would be perfect. I don't mind helping
with care, either. I am currently paying
$385/mo. for full care (stall by day, out
at night), a small dressage arena, and no
trails. Deb Bliessner ––

Member of the
Month –– Susan
Skalak
When did you become a member of
VADA Charlottesville?
Susan: I first joined 10 years ago
when I started showing my
thoroughbred in some small
schooling shows. Then I got
pregnant with my first child, then
pregnant with a surprise second
child, my first horse died, got a two
year old horse just as my daughter
turned 2, then after a few detours just
started to show again this year and
rejoined VADA-Ch.
When did you move to the area and
why? From what location did you
move?
Susan: I moved to Charlottesville
back in 1993 to take a job at the
university. I moved up from Atlanta
after finishing grad school there at
Georgia Tech. I taught for 6 years in
the engineering school, and then after
I got married and got pregnant with
my first child I decided to leave and
stay home. By then, my husband and
I had bought a farm in Batesville,
and had bought our first "tractor" for
the farm, a Suffolk-Punch named
Read's Regal Jill.
When did you start riding? What
made you interested in dressage?
Susan: I started riding when I was
nine years old. Then I started pony
club at 11, and at the time hated the
dressage portion of the 3 day events.
I rode all through school and had to
quit when I got to college. After
college, I returned to riding and had
a jumper who died of colic, then just
to be able to ride I took up exercising
polo horses and got into playing polo
for a few years in Charlotte, NC.
After coming to Charlottesville, I
took up riding again and started
taking lessons with Tad Coffin. He
6
basically had me start over and learn
to ride all over again, spending two
years at a walk and trot before
finally progressing to canter and
finally to jumping. However, in
those years that I spent with Tad's
exacting teaching I developed an
understanding and love for dressage.
After my husband and I bought our
farm, I continued with dressage.
After the death of my thoroughbred
with EPM, I decided to find a
dressage horse. I worked with
Catherine Sutton who found me a
lovely Hanoverian/TB gelding
named Oliver who was out of a
champion hunter mare named Olivia,
and by Romantic Star. I bought
Oliver when he was 2, so we have
been working together for the last
four years, but in serious work for
the last year. I feel that dressage is
the most intellectual of all the
equestrian sports, and I love the
mental side of it, and the continual
opportunity for improvement.
What do you do for a living? If this
involves horses now, did it always
involve them? If not, what did you
do in your previous life, and how did
the switch evolve?
Susan: I was a manufacturing
engineer for six years, than went
back to graduate school to get a
Ph.D. and then taught engineering
design for 6 years. My husband is
also an engineering professor. After
having children, we felt someone
should be home with the kids, and so
I volunteered. We had a farm by
then, and I love looking after our
horses, donkey and chickens. Now, I
am involved in starting a non-profit
group in Virginia called Science is
Elementary that goes into elementary
schools with science and engineering
experiments and projects for the kids.
What do you consider your greatest
achievement in the sport during the
last year?
Susan: In the last year, I was finally
able to get back into competition
after being away for 10 years. I took
my Hanoverian/TB Oliver to
Dressage at Lexington in July and
competed with him at training level.
I was happy to take home a couple of
ribbons with him, and happy to see
that he settled into the swing of
things and seemed to enjoy the show
as much as I did.
What are your ambitions in the
sport?
Susan: I would love to take my
horse as far as he is capable of going
- hopefully all the way to Grand Prix
level, but we are taking each day one
step at a time, one ride at a time.
What do you want to get out of
VADA-CH? What can you contribute
to VADA-CH?
Susan: I really enjoy the schooling
shows and feel that they really help
prepare me and my horse for the
recognized shows. I also enjoy the
clinics and hope that I will be able to
attend one this year. I can contribute
my time to the organization and help
when and where I am able.
