President & CEO Message
In cancer centers across the country, there has been an increased focus on meeting the psychosocial
needs of people with cancer in 2015. This is exactly what Ann’s Place has been doing for over 24
years since our inception in 1991, thanks to the vision and passion our founders had almost 2 ½ decades ago when our mission
began. The state of Connecticut has over 200,000 cancer survivors, and it is estimated by the American Cancer Society report
that we will see almost 22,000 people in CT diagnosed with cancer during 2015.
Ann’s Place isn’t about the cure or the research, but it is about coping and living with the disease. Dealing with the disease is
difficult enough, but when you add a whole number of psychosocial issues into the mix, then the ability to manage all these obstacles becomes overwhelming and at times unmanageable. These stark statistics are the context in which we do our work, which
is about helping those who are in the midst of cancer live as well as possible. From the time of diagnosis on, cancer challenges
and sometimes capsizes the worlds of those who are affected by it. It is not uncommon for those facing cancer to feel anxious,
fearful, or depressed. In some cases, cancer or its treatment severely disrupts sleep, causes chronic physical pain or weakness,
changes a person’s physical appearance, and makes routine activities much more difficult to perform. Suddenly a life that was
already full with responsibilities must now stretch to accommodate a myriad of medical appointments, tests, and procedures.
Certain cancer treatments are very difficult to tolerate and leave some patients feeling debilitated and unable to work or take care
of their families. Even for those fortunate enough to have good health insurance, the exorbitantly high cost of cancer treatment
is more than some families can afford, which adds to the stress of dealing with the disease. In the midst of it all, many people
facing cancer live with uncertainty about their own future or the future of someone they dearly love. Even as cancer causes
upheaval and disruption, however, many report that dealing with the disease has expanded their horizons and led them to look at
this precious life more deeply and with greater gratitude.
At Ann’s Place, those who have or had a diagnosis of cancer, and loved ones, are not alone. We provide support to them no
matter where they are on their journey - no matter how well or sick they feel, or where they are on the continuum of hope and
despair. We have the facility, the services, the support and the staff/volunteers to provide individual counseling, group counseling, financial aid, education, wellness programs and resources. The support services received helped inspire people to create
their own pathway through cancer that strengthens and sustains them, and improves their quality of life.
We are now actively serving 950 + clients, an increase of over 100 clients since 2014. We had our largest number of new clients in 2014. The increases represent more awareness of the services we provide as well as increases in the number of cancer
diagnoses. In order to better serve our clients in 2015 and improve future services, we are investing in a more modern software
system that will allow us to better track usage of all services and programs. Looking at 2015, we will be trying to make inroads
to our underserved communities and potentially adding hours of service during the weekend to accommodate individuals with
scheduling conflicts.
I am very inspired by our dedicated staff, volunteers, Board of Directors and you, Our Community, who have helped and stood
by us to support Ann’s Place each and every year. I am humbled to be leading this agency in providing the very best services to
those men, women and children along with their family members affected by cancer in as warm and comfortable an environment
as their own home.

Chairman’s Report
The year 2014 has been a year of continuing transition. During the year we welcomed Anthony Zeolla as our
new President and CEO as well as several new members to the staff of the organization. We also welcomed
several new directors to our Board as we continue to transition from the highly committed volunteer board
members who led the drive to build our new facility to a board now focused on maximizing our services in
this new wonderful facility.
A highlight of the year was the opportunity to honor Paul Dinto, our long-term volunteer, Chairman, and
generous benefactor. We did so at our annual Festival of Trees event in November and it was a night for
all those touched by Paul’s generosity to say thank you to him. We are eternally grateful to Paul for his
leadership over so many years.
Our board continues to focus on ensuring that we have sufficient financial support to continue past programs while also growing and adding new programs to meet the needs of those who are facing the challenges of a cancer diagnosis. With the support of so many, we continue to be able to offer all our services
free of charge.
Looking to the future, we are committed to continuing all our services at no charge and to expanding our
financial assistance program. To do so will require even greater support from the community we serve. One
goal is to retain donors year-to-year. Any organization needs the on-going support of our past donors and
a continuous stream of new donors every year. Ann’s Place is no exception and our Board is committed to
this goal.
That said, we want to thank everyone who has supported Ann’s Place as volunteers, donors and friends.

Cancer Insights
According to the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Facts
and Figures 2015 - in the United States the risk of developing
cancer in one’s lifetime is 1 in 2 for men and 1 in 3 for women.
The report demonstrates that over the last 20 years there has
been a 22 percent decrease in deaths from cancer, partly due to
earlier detection and also improvements in treatment.
As cancer risk is highest in those over 65 and the population
is expected to experience a sharp increase in this age demographic, it is clear, that along with the increased
survival rate, the number of cancer survivors will continue to grow substantially.
Unlike in earlier years, cancer is no longer considered a death sentence. People are often being treated as
though cancer were a chronic illness. With the advent of more targeted therapies, most recently focusing on
cancer genomics, molecular engineering and disease fighting nanotechnologies, there continues to be progress in the area of treatment. In spite of these advances, many people with cancer face tremendous stress and
anxiety about their diagnosis, treatment, and concerns regarding their future. The National Cancer Institute
reports that “approximately 40% of cancer patients report significant distress.” They go on to report that various psychosocial interventions have shown positive benefits. These include relaxation training, cognitive and
behavioral strategies, cancer education/information sessions and group support.

This was Ann’s Place’s first art show including a full array of
submissions by Ann’s Place clients and people in the community. Robbie Siemon organized this exceptional event which

was open for the month of June. Nancy Chapman, our art

instructor, was also involved in the planning. The Art Show
opening included a talk by Gail Pezzimenti who teaches a
summer watercolor class at Ann’s Place. Appetizers were
provided and prepared by the Ann’s Place “foodies”. The
art show was an overwhelming success. It was an excellent opportunity for our clients to participate in a
meaningful outlet and to increase community awareness.
• just apzz... – An Ann’s Place cookbook
Lori Zezza helped to organize and oversee a group of clients and community members to
develop an Ann’s Place cookbook. This involved a committee of several clients, as well as
Nancy Shail, Lenore Carta, Sandra Ahrstrom, Robin Kelly Day, Bob Welsh, Judee Thomas,
Eric Kellen-Garcia, Rody Manousakis and also involved collaboration with area restaurants
and chefs (Bailey’s Backyard, Mothership Bakery & Cafe, My Chef To Go, Ridgefield Academy, Landmark Preschool, Stanziato’s Wood Fired Pizza and The Waterfall Restaurant by
Elmer, which greatly enhanced the final product. The cookbook was published in late fall
and reflects the movement to healthy nutrition that is critical to wellness.
• Grief and the Holidays – Kevin Berrill, MSW, LCSW, once again led this workshop to address some of
the difficulties of the holidays for those who are grieving and ways mourners can take care of themselves,
remember those who have died, find support, and create new holiday traditions.
• AARP Safe Driver Course – Joe Gillotti offered this 4-hour course to our clients. It provided researchbased information to help improve driving knowledge and skills. This course was intended for people 50 and
older but anyone was welcome to attend.
• Albertus Magnus Art Therapy School – A student contacted Ann’s Place to do a research project evaluating the effectiveness of using mindfulness-based art therapy to help decrease stress and improve mood for
individuals with cancer. Clients were informed about the study and several chose to participate.
• Quota Club International – provided a supply of comfort pillows for our clients. These pillows were sewn
by inmates at Danbury Correctional Facility. These pillows represent the coming together of the community in
such a tangible way for our clients. The pillows are for women following a mastectomy or other surgery.
• Danbury New Fairfield Women’s Club – donated 12 beautiful hand-made blankets for our clients.
The group agreed to make some for the Festival of Trees as well.

Presentations
Ann’s Place has a commitment to cancer education and
strives to bring new and important information to the community. This year we had several excellent speakers and
presentations. Some of these were open only to Ann’s Place
clients or a specific group, some were open to other health
care professionals and the whole community at large.
• Integrative Medicine - Peggy O’Shea, RN – Complementary Therapy Nurse at Danbury Hospital.
Peggy spoke about complementary therapy, nutrition, self-care and stress reduction.
• Lymphedema - Laurie Plaut, OTR, Danbury Hospital - Laurie spoke about the causes and prevention
of Lymphedema for women with breast cancer.
• Latest Imaging for Breast Cancer Detection: 3D Mammography - Barbara Blanco, MD, Danbury Hospital.
Dr. Blanco spoke about the potential benefits of the new technology that is available in detecting breast cancer. This three dimensional mammogram may be better at picking up invasive tumors and avoiding some of
the unnecessary callbacks that result from suspicious screening findings.

The theme of the impact stories emphasize overcoming adversity, stress, side effects from chemotherapy and radiation, pain, shock, and financial hardship. Counseling, Support Peer Groups and Wellness Programs provide the
psycho social support that’s necessary to build strength, gain clarity and navigate through their journey with cancer.
In each story – hope and love is the dominant feeling because each client’s story centers on how Ann’s Place support
made the difference in their lives.
That difference is duly credited to our donors who make all this possible.
At year’s end, a Development Assessment was commissioned from Danosky & Associates to help develop a more
strategic approach to fund raising. The result was a Strategic Plan to help maximize our revenue to support the growing programs and services provided by Ann’s Place. More to come on this initiative in the coming year.

Ann’s Place provides an inclusive and welcoming environment to clients of diverse cultural backgrounds. To further reach underserved communities in the Danbury area, we have embarked on a
Health Equity Initiative Program in 2015 to house a part time bilingual LCSW from Ann’s Place at
CENTRO – the Multicultural Center – in order to establish familiarity with our services. There we
would provide initial outreach, counseling and support groups for those touched by cancer.
Technology
In an age where we must all do more with less, Ann’s Place has taken the initiative to utilize upgraded
technology to help with the efficiencies and effectiveness of our work. Development has put out proposals to foundations to help fund this initiative. Specifically, for an initial needs assessment of our
client database system. In addition, we plan to upgrade our donor database system – which will afford
staff a more effective and efficient means of stewarding our donors. Thirdly, we are due for a muchneeded upgrade to our website to better reach our clients and donors.
Up-to-date technology will better help us meet the critical need for comprehensive cancer support services which include counseling, support groups, wellness activities, and educational resources. Equally
important for cancer patients is having these services provided under one roof in a community setting.
Looking Forward
2015 has proven to be a pivotal year at Ann’s Place. The Board of Directors approved a Strategic Plan
for Development, and has engaged all the Board in its implementation. There are now five implementation teams: Development Committee, Leadership Committee, Annual Giving Committee, Stewardship
Committee and 25th Anniversary Committee. These committees were developed as a way of distributing the workload and building board ownership for our fund raising and development efforts. We have
assigned all board members to these teams.
Financial Aid
Living with cancer can significantly impact the lives of
survivors. Some clients are unable to work or have cut
back their hours due to their treatments. Many small business owners have struggled as well. The financial distress
can be devastating. We work with others in the community to address these needs, exploring resource options and
making referrals when available.
Last year, Ann’s Place continued to make need based Financial Aid a service for our community.
In 2014 we assisted a record 44 clients. This represented payments to individual providers for things
such as utilities, rent, transportation, lodging, supplies to address specific cancer sequela, as well as
provision of gift cards for groceries and gasoline. In addition, a client was given a gift certificate for
200 gallons of heating oil which was donated by a local home heating oil company. We are so grateful
to all the community businesses who generously support our financial assistance program.

Woodbury
We had a successful year of fundraising for Ann’s Place,
although overall revenue decreased $194K in 2014 from
prior year due to the state grant of $250K received in 2013
for the construction of our building. Fundraising event revFinancials
enue led the way this year with record numbers from our
largest fundraiser, the Festival of Trees and the doubling
of our community fundraisers to 35 in 2014. Expenses increased primarily due to the transition of a new leadership
team and increased staffing hours to better serve our community. We are focused on investing in the right
areas to strengthen the mission of Ann’s Place for the future.
Support and Revenue exceeded $1.1M with dollars coming from varied sources. The major sources included fundraising activities of $547K, individual donations (incl. matching) of $225K, corporations &
foundations of $143K and civic, service and religious organizations of $3K. Almost 10% or $111K were
restricted donations and spent directly on programs that included client services, children, wellness, and
horticulture.
Total Expenses equaled $1.4M which were divided between Program Services of $640K and Support
Services of $738K (including depreciation of $123K). Ann’s Place ended 2014 with a change in Net Assets (Net Loss) of ($269K) thereby decreasing Net Assets to $5.2M at the end of the year.
Ann’s Place balance sheet remained strong with total assets of $5.3M, which included cash of $193K,
receivables of $77K, and prepaid expenses of $15K and Net-PP&E of $5M. Total current liabilities of
$118K included a short-term line of credit of $100K, accounts payable of $4K, accrued expenses of $9K
and deferred revenue of $5K. Ann’s Place had no long-term debt outstanding as of December 2014.
As a result of routinely reviewing Ann’s Place operating and financial processes by management, the
board and the staff, Ann’s Place received an unqualified opinion from our auditors, Hope & Hernandez
P.C.

Ann’s Place Facts
Celebrating a quarter century of being a compassionate nonprofit cancer support agency serving
Connecticut & lower Hudson Valley New York.
All our services are provided at no charge to men, women, and children living with cancer.
We actively serve over 950+ clients & family members with just over 3 full-time clinical paid staff.
Groups and activities are led by licensed clinical social workers and other mental health
providers as well as by highly trained wellness instructors.
We offer individual & family counseling, support groups, yoga & movement classes, knitting
group, nutrition programs, reiki, tai-chi’, art classes, horticultural therapy, resource library,
guided imagery & mindfulness instruction, limited financial assistance to individuals & families who qualify and more.
Ann’s Place offers educational programs to increase community awareness about the causes,
impact, treatment and prevention of cancer. We aim to help those affected by cancer to advocate for themselves and their loved ones and to live healthy, fulfulling and meaningful lives.
The only way we are able to provide all these services free of charge is through the continuing, generous donations and support from the community.
During 2014, over 1100 dedicated and invaluable volunteers helped us to provide our services
and run our major events as well as champion many community fundraisers on our behalf.
Ann’s Place has only 3 major 2015 fundraisers each year; The Ladies Golf Classic (our 20th
year & one of the top womens tournaments in CT), The Ann Olsen Greater Danbury Classic
(our 26th year) and the Festival of Trees (5000 attendees over 2.5 days at the Matrix Conference & Banquet Center).
The Amber Room 5K community fundraiser had over 450 participants in 2014.
All this with less than 10 full-time, paid staff.
