FRIDAY, JUNE 27 – THURSDAY, JULY 3 FRIDAY, JULY 4 – TUESDAY, JULY 8 Exclusive Area Premiere! Ellen Page in Back By Popular Demand! Restored New 35mm Print! The Tracey Fragments Blade Runner: Final Cut Fri at 8:00, 10:00; Sat at 1:30, 3:30, 5:30, 7:30, 9:30; Sun – Thu at 3:30, 5:30, 7:30, 9:30 (2007) dir Bruce McDonald w/Ellen Page [79 min] Presented almost entirely in split-screen frames, cult director Bruce McDonald’s audacious THE TRACEY FRAGMENTS has been praised for its startling and innovative visual design as it fractures the cinema screen in a startling technical tour de force. However, the film is far more than a mere exercise in style. In fact, its evocation of Tracey’s mindset may represent the best foray into the troubled-teen sub-genre in recent memory. The primary reason for this is the astounding performance of JUNO’s Ellen Page as Tracey. at 2:30, 5:00, 7:30, 10:00 (Please note: no 10pm show on 7/4) (1982) dir Ridley Scott w/Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer, Sean Young, Edward James Olmos, M. Emmet Walsh, Daryl Hannah, William Sanderson, Brion James [118 min] We are so thrilled that Ridley Scott’s hands-down-classic has returned to the big screen with a 21st century makeover that we’re celebrating with a July 4th return engagement. With restored picture and sound and Scott revisiting the material to clean up some rough edges and redo some effects, BLADE RUNNER: FINAL CUT is the definitive version of a film that has had many lives. Teenaged outsider Tracey, traumatized by the disappearance of her younger brother Sonny, leaves her small town for the bright lights of Winnipeg. Alone and broke, she wanders the streets, encountering other, more wizened outsiders and, every once in a while, out of the corner of her eye, catching a glimpse of someone who may be her missing brother. All the while she reminisces about her life at home and in school. The dialogue is astonishingly precise in its evocation of a teenager’s thoughts and McDonald’s use of split screen is consistently compelling, virtually tearing the screen apart in an effort to capture Tracey’s headspace. Perhaps the most impressive aspect of the film, though, is Page, who is extraordinary here. She has emerged as one of the most promising young actors in cinema, and she delivers on that promise, creating a character who is simultaneously infuriating and touching. THE TRACEY FRAGMENTS is an unforgettable, daring glimpse into a traumatized consciousness. – adapted from notes for the Toronto Int’l Film Festival Summer 2008: Friday, June 27 – Thursday, August 28, 2008 WEDNESDAY, JULY 9 – MONDAY, JULY 14 • ROMAN POLANSKI’S PASSIONS Wednesday, July 9 Knife In The Water at 3:30, 5:30, 7:30, 9:30 (1962) dir Roman Polanski w/Leon Niemczyk, Jolanta Umecka, Zygmunt Malanowicz [94 min] Polanski’s first feature, made in his native Poland is one of the greatest debuts in the history of cinema, as sharp as the edge of a razor. A couple and a boy they’ve hit with their car go out on a boat in a deserted and pristine lake region, every gesture, every word, and every silence singes and scalds. Thursday, July 10 The Tenant at 7:00 (1976) dir Polanski w/Polanski, Isabelle Adjani, Melvyn Douglas [126 min] Polanski is a master at using claustrophobia to send his characters and his stories to the edge of madness – and, usually, beyond. Polanski himself stars in THE TENANT as an unassuming man who moves into a small Parisian apartment in which the former tenant has committed suicide. He soon becomes to suspect that the other residents of his building are trying to drive him to the same fate. Repulsion Double Feature! at 4:45, 9:30 (1965) dir Polanski w/Catherine Deneuve [104 min] Polanski's first masterpiece is both a superb depiction of disturbed sexuality and urban loneliness. Deneuve plays a woman left alone in her sister’s apartment and, as she becomes increasingly isolated, she descends into madness while Polanski’s subjective camera follows with youthful abandon. Friday, July 11 & Saturday, July 12 Rosemary’s Baby at 2:00, 7:00 (1968) dir Polanski w/Mia Farrow, John Cassavetes, Ruth Gordon, Sidney Blackmer [136 min] A landmark psychological horror classic that took the genre in a whole new direction by scaring audiences through superb acting, storytelling and direction but without a ‘monster.’ When Rosemary and her husband move into a new apartment in Manhattan, she soon becomes pregnant. After strange incidents begin to unfold, she begins to suspect her attentive, new neighbors’ motivations and to fear for herself and her child. Friday, July 11 Co-feature Double Feature! The Fearless Vampire Killers at 4:45, 9:45 (1967) dir Polanski w/Polanski, Jack MacGowran, Sharon Tate [108 min] Atmospheric, elegant, gothic… and extremely silly, FEARLESS VAMPIRE KILLERS succeeds in simultaneously creating a sense of dread and poking fun at the conventions of its genre. Dotty old Professor Ambronsius (MacGowran) and his marginally competent assistant Alfred (Polanski) bring their vampire slaying services to an isolated town but they find defeating the bloodsuckers a bit more challenging than expected. Saturday, July 12 Co-feature Double Feature! Chinatown at 4:30, 9:45 (1974) dir Polanski w/Jack Nicholson, Faye Dunaway [131 min] This classic neo-noir is set in the rapidly expanding Los Angeles of the late 1930s. What starts out as a run-of-the-mill investigation into infidelity for private detective Jake Gittes (Nicholson) turns into uncovering a murder plot centering around the most precious commodity in this growing desert metropolis… water. MONDAYS & TUESDAYS Sunday, July 13 Oliver Twist ALL ABOUT BETTE at 3:30, 9:30 (2005) dir Polanski w/Barney Clark, Harry Eden, Ben Kingsley [130 min] Polanski’s most recent film is this deceptively straightforward adaptation of Dickens’ classic tale. The orphaned Oliver finds an unlikely family in a gang of pickpockets. In its recreation of Victorian London, the film does what few period pieces can – it makes its time period seem timeless and it makes its characters resonate with today’s audiences. Tess Double Feature! at 12:00, 6:00 (1979) dir Polanski w/Nastassja Kinski, Peter Firth [190 min] TESS is another spot-on Victorian literary adaptation and Polanski’s last great film before his (arguably) long fallow period ending with THE PIANIST. While OLIVER TWIST takes on the grit of 19th century London, TESS sets its churning tale of loves lost and found, bought and won, in the bucolic British countryside with the luminous 17-yearold-Nastassja Kinski in the lead role. Monday, July 14 The Pianist at 8:00 (2002) dir Polanski w/Adrian Brody [150 min] A remarkable return to form for Polanski, THE PIANIST is a stunning achievement. This multiple Oscar winning film tells the story of a man (Brody) trying to eke out an existence in the abandoned and hostile Warsaw Ghetto during WWII. Otherworldly yet clearly grounded in reality, intensely personal yet compelling and gripping, THE PIANIST is nothing short of a masterpiece. Also Monday, July 14 American Australian Association presents Australian Short Film Today at 5:45pm A program featuring recent award-winning short films from Australia. FRIDAYS, SATURDAYS, SUNDAYS & MONDAYS SPECIAL ENGAGEMENTS & PREMIERES Friday, July 18 – Monday, July 21 Also Sunday, July 20 Area Premiere! Japanese Horror Spoof! Milk and Cookie Productions presents SHORT FILM DOUBLE-FEATURE EXTE: HAIR EXTENSIONS at 11:00am Boston-based Milk and Cookie Productions presents a "double feature" of their two short films, "The Quarter-Life Crisis" and "Skin and Bone". Following the first screening there will be acoustic performances from musical acts. The afternoon will finish with the World Premiere of the dramatic ensemble short, "Skin and Bone," which focuses on the ties between healthcare workers, patients, and their families. Please check BRATTLEFILM.ORG for ticket information. at 5:00, 7:15, 9:30 (+ Sat & Sun at 2:45) (2007) dir Sion Sono w/ Chiaki Kuriyama, Ren Osugi, Megumi Sato, Tsugumi [108 min] Whether you are confounded, bored, or excited by the recent overload of Japanese ‘hair horror’ (The Ring, The Grudge, etc) making its way onto American screens, you will undoubtedly be both tickled and thrilled by Sion Sono’s wacky vision. The director of the excellent Suicide Club teams with Kill Bill and Battle Royale wunderkind Chiaki Kuriyama to create a film that, amazingly, works as both a loving parody and note-perfect horror film. The plucky Yuko (Kuriyama) is an aspiring hairdresser at the Gilles de Rais salon, where the client is never as demanding as the boss. When her salon is sold an assortment of hair extensions by a strange hair peddler, Yuko is plunged into a nightmare. The peddler is actually a deranged, hair-obsessed coroner who has discovered a body whose hair continues to grow out-of-control. The body in question happens to that of a brutally murdered girl and her vengeful spirit possesses the extensions made from her hair. Needless to say, very bad things happen to the people who wear them – most suffering spectacularly hirsute deaths. Can Yuko discover the mystery behind the extensions before her friends and family fall pray to the vicious and disturbing hair-attacks? Will the gonzo musical performance by the coroner ever get out of your head? Answer these questions for yourself by seeing this summer’s most unusual horror film! “The story is ripe for satire, and Sono does frequently inject a humorous tone into the proceedings… but EXTE is also a surprisingly creepy and effective film. Some of the director’s more outrageous visuals are balanced by a nice sense of uneasiness throughout… [Sono] makes what could have been a much more farcical premise into one of the more original J-horror movies I’ve seen in recent memory.” – Fangoria Mon at 2:30; Tue at 2:00, 4:45, 7:30 (1950) dir Joseph Mankiewicz w/Bette Davis, Anne Baxter, George Sanders, Celeste Holm, Gary Merrill, Hugh Marlowe, Marilyn Monroe [138 min] “Fasten your seat belts, it’s going to be a bumpy night!” The ultimate backstage backstabbing bitchfest with Bette Davis as aging Broadway star Margo Channing who takes in Eve (Baxter), an aspiring actress, who schemes to worm her way into every corner of Margo’s life. The dialogue (including Bette’s oft quoted line above) flies fast and furious in this quintessential melodrama. Monday, July 21 & Tuesday, July 22 Three on a Match Double Feature! Mon at 2:00; Tue at 4:30, 7:30 (1932) dir Mervyn LeRoy w/Davis, Anne Dvorak, Joan Blondell [63 min] Three schoolyard friends are reunited after having grown up and apart. The three light their cigarettes off of the same match (superstition says this is bad luck) and bring each other up to speed on their lives. Mary (Blondell) is an entertainer. Ruth (Davis) is a secretary. Vivian (Dvorak) is married to a rich man and has a son. Although Vivian has made a cushy life for herself, she is dissatisfied and bored so she runs off with a gambler. Diving into a life of hedonism, Vivian abandons her husband but takes her son with her. The boy is rescued but Vivian and her boyfriend have racked up a debt whose payment puts all of their lives in danger. Not available on video Bureau of Missing Persons Mon at 3:30; Tue at 3:00, 6:00, 9:00 (1933) dir Roy Del Ruth w/Davis, Pat O'Brien, Lewis Stone [73 min] Bette plays a proto-femme fatale in this pseudo-film noir from the last days of the racy Pre-Code era. Detective Butch Saunders has been transferred to the “kindergarten” of missing persons because his police tactics are a little too brutal for homicide. No sooner does he land his post than he is approached by Norma (Davis), a mysterious woman claiming to be missing her husband. Saunders finds himself in the middle of a mystery that takes all his ham-fisted talent to solve. Not available on DVD Monday, July 28 & Tuesday, July 29 Jezebel Mon at 3:15; Tue at 3:15, 7:15 (1938) dir William Wyler w/Davis, Henry Fonda, George Brent, Margaret Lindsay [103 min] Bette won her second Oscar for her lead role in this drama set in the high society of 19th century New Orleans. She stars as Julie, a headstrong Southern belle who can’t help but act out, alienating her loving fiancé (Ford) and labeling herself a Jezebel. Despite her desire for independence, Julie comes into her own when a deadly outbreak of Yellow Fever occurs and she has the opportunity to redeem herself. Bette proves herself as well, bringing depth to a role that could have been a scene-chewing disaster. Dangerous Friday, July 25 – Monday, July 28 Tribute To John Phillip Law! 40th Anniversaries! DANGER: DIABOLIK Double Feature! BARBARELLA at 3:15, 7:30 (No 3:15 show on 7/28) This rarely screened super-thief flick features B-movie fave John Phillip Law in a starring role as Diabolik, an international man of mystery who steals from the rich to… well… keep it for himself. Yes, Diabolik is a thief, pure-and-simple, but he is perhaps one of the hippest robbers ever committed to celluloid. Sort of like To Catch A Thief on steroids, DANGER: DIABOLIK features great locations, beautiful women, fabulous riches, and a cop who will stop at nothing to catch his man. Directed by the immortal Italian schlock master Mario Bava and featuring a devilishly charming performance by Law, this movie is a colorful, mod confection not to be missed on the big screen. at 5:30, 9:45 (+ Sat & Sun at 1:15) (1968) dir Roger Vadim w/Jane Fonda, John Phillip Law, Anita Pallenberg, and Milo O’Shea [98 min] Jane Fonda became an icon after starring in this farce about the sexual misadventures of an “astronautical aviatrix” in the 41st century but the film also features a great performance from the handsome, shirtless John Phillip Law who plays Barbarella’s guardian angel (literally). When the scientist Duran-Duran vanishes with the galaxy’s most dangerous weapon, it’s up to Barbarella to find him and save the universe from destruction. BARBARELLA is at the top of the camp classic heap. Celebrating Casablanca Restaurant’s 30th Birthday! Casablanca For Casablanca! CASABLANCA Fri & Sat at 2:45, 7:15; Sun at 3:15, 7:15; Mon at 7:15 only (1942) dir Michael Curtiz w/Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, Claude Rains, Sidney Greenstreet, Paul Henreid, Peter Lorre, Dooley Wilson [102 min] One of the most indelible legacies of the Brattle’s legendary Bogart series of the Fifties and Sixties is the bar and restaurant Casablanca, which sprang from the popularity of frequent screenings of this classic film. In celebration of the restaurant’s 30th birthday, we present these showings of CASABLANCA and offer a little something extra for those who attend. The film’s story is, by now the stuff of legend… thorny ex-pat Rick (Bogart) meets an old flame (Bergman) in his bar in WWII Casablanca. But she is now the companion of a valued resistance fighter (Henreid) looking for passage to America. The drama that plays out is certainly compelling, but most of the joys of this film come from the colorful cast of supporting characters (Greenstreet, Lorre, Wilson and, especially, Rains) and the supremely accomplished script. A special $15 ticket will be available that includes a dessert or drink at Casablanca Restaurant before or after the screening. Regular ticket prices also are available. Double Feature! at 5:00, 9:30 (1941) dir John Huston w/Humphrey Bogart, Mary Astor, Sidney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre [101 min] Bogart’s other most iconic role is as the cynical and smart private eye Sam Spade in this, one of the greatest of the great film noirs. THE MALTESE FALCON weaves an intricate tale of obsession and desire around a carved bird statue that is said to be worth a fortune. The people who hunt it flock to Spade when a man carrying a mysterious bundle dies on his doorstep and they use every method from guile to force to charm to get him on their side. Spade, being too smart by half for any of them, beautifully plays everyone against each other while pursuing a goal all his own. Sunday, Aug 3 & Monday, Aug 4 Co-feature PLAY IT AGAIN, SAM Double Feature! Sun at 1:15, 5:30, 9:30; Mon at 5:30, 9:30 (1972) dir Herbert Ross w/Woody Allen, Diane Keaton, Tony Roberts, Jerry Lacy, Susan Anspach, Viva [85 min] One of the more unlikely inspirees of Bogart’s inimitable charms is Woody Allen who penned and stars in this comedy about a man who is counseled in life and love by Bogie’s ghost. Allen plays Allan, a movie critic whose wife has just dumped him. His unsuccessful attempts to get back in the dating scene are guided, not only by Bogie, but also by his friends Dick (Roberts) and Linda (Keaton). Filled with references to and recreations of famous Bogart scenes and with Allen’s trademark blend of slapstick and verbal comedy, PLAY IT AGAIN, SAM is a hilarious, loving homage to one of the great Hollywood personas. Friday, August 8 – Monday, August 11 Also, Friday, August 8 – Sunday, August 10 Area Premiere Reissue! Charlie Chaplin’s NEW VERDOUX 35MM MONSIEUR - Sun at 2:30, 5:00, 7:30 (+ Sun at Noon); Mon at 7:15, 9:45 PRINT! Fri (1947) dir Charlie Chaplin w/Chaplin, Martha Raye, Mady Correll, Allison Roddan [124 min] Film maudit turned cult classic, Charlie Chaplin’s MONSIEUR VERDOUX is now widely considered one of his best works, and his most political. Chaplin immodestly proclaimed it “the cleverest, most brilliant film of my career.” Nominated for the 1948 Academy Award for Best Screenplay, and originating from a true story, this self-described “comedy of murders” was based on an idea by Orson Welles, which Chaplin reportedly bought for five thousand dollars in a refusal to be directed by anyone but himself. VERDOUX stars Chaplin as the moustachioed bluebeard in beret and cravat whose charming manners and good looks cloak a deep-seated, murderous hatred, festering since the loss of his longstanding job as a bank clerk. The film includes such unforgettable moments as Verdoux snipping roses in his garden while an incinerator rages behind him, and his infamous preguillotine salvo, an indictment of humanity’s cyclical follies. Plagued with censorship problems early on, and temporarily pulled from distribution in the US at the height of the Cold War Hollywood witch-hunts, VERDOUX was initially vilified for its risqué societal critique. “Now it shapes up as Chaplin’s most startling, most invigorating movie; its icy temperature is positively bracing after the hot syrup of his earlier work.” (Time Out). A mordant satire that exemplifies the fine line between comedy and tragedy, VERDOUX transcends the borders of genre, and deserves to be seen multiple times, especially in this new 35mm print. It “has a Brechtian toughness and wit, but the style is soft, seductive, elegiac” (Dave Kehr). Quite simply, “you shouldn’t miss Monsieur Verdoux” (The New York Times). – Andréa Picard, Cinematheque Ontario Special Event! Doctor Who on the big screen! HOOKED ON WHO! at 10:00pm Inspired by the success of the newest incarnation of the legendary BBC sci-fi show DOCTOR WHO, the Brattle is offering up a selection of some of our favorite WHO stories on the big screen. For the uninitiated, DOCTOR WHO is the longest running sci-fi TV show on the planet, since 1963 it has been delighting audiences with a blend of campy effects, excellent scripts, and charismatic characters – not the least of which being The Doctor himself, a ‘timelord’ who travels through time and space in a blue police telephone box protecting the universe from all kinds of dangers. For this celebration we will be featuring two full storylines from the most well known Doctor, Tom Baker, plus a selection of episodes from the recent resurrection of the show starring Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant. Friday, August 8: GENESIS OF THE DALEKS starring Tom Baker, script by Terry Nation [142 min] Saturday, August 9: THE LONG GAME starring Christopher Eccleston and Simon Pegg; BLINK and SCHOOL REUNION starring David Tennant [45 min each] “It is a masterpiece. Friday, August 15 GREASE at 4:15, 7:00, 9:45 (1978) dir Randal Kleiser w/Olivia Newton John, John Travolta, Stockard Channing, Jeff Conaway [110] Everyone knows that ‘Grease’ is the word. This quintessential high school musical has been oft imitated but never duplicated (take that Grease 2). A summertime romance between bad boy Danny (Travolta) and candy-coated Sandy (Newton-John) ends in disaster as the two are reunited at Rydell High, only to be separated once again by the disparaging social classes of high school. Will the two ever get back together? Is Rizzo really pregnant? And just how old is Frankie Avalon? Saturday, August 16 MOULIN ROUGE! at 5:00, 7:30, 10:00 (2001) dir Baz Luhrmann w/Nicole Kidman, Ewan McGregor, John Leguizamo, Richard Roxburgh, Jim Broadbent [127 min] Set in hedonistic 1900’s Paris, MOULIN ROUGE uses lush graphics, a surprisingly in-tune Nicole Kidman and the always endearing Ewan McGregor to work songs from Elton John, Madonna and David Bowie (among others) seamlessly into this tale of love, lust, and jealousy. Optimistic but penniless writer Christian (McGregor) falls for the beautiful courtesan Satine (Kidman) at the Moulin Rouge. Unfortunately there is competition for her love, from the villainous Duke (Roxburgh), who will stop at nothing to make Satine his and his alone. As the Duke attempts to woo Satine by turning the Moulin Rouge into a “real theatre”, she begins a love affair with Christian. Their dangerous love triangle persists, but little do they know the deadly secret that is hidden to them all, even Satine. Double Feature! Mon at 1:30; Tue at 5:30, 9:30 (1935) dir Alfred E. THE MUPPET MOVIE at 1:00, 3:00 (1979) dir James Frawley w/Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie, Gonzo and The Muppets, Charles Durning, Austin Pendleton [95 min] Kermit’s reaching for the stars! A Hollywood agent persuades Kermit and his merry band of muppets to head west to Hollywood to become a star. Unfortunately there are road bumps along the way, mainly the rascally Doc Hopper who has plans for Kermit that don’t include the bright lights of the walk of fame. Keep an eye peeled for guest stars like Richard Pryor, Steve Martin and Orson Welles. Sunday, August 17 SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN at 5:00 7:15, 9:30 (1952) dirs Stanley Donen, Gene Kelly w/Kelly, Donald O’Connor, Debbie Reynolds [103 min] One of the most classic musicals of all time, SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN tells the story of Don (Kelly) and Lina (Hagen), a famous on-screen romantic duo. However, their on-screen love is mistaken by Lina for the real thing, she attempts to woo Don who struggles to spurn her advances left and right. When their latest film is turned into a “talkie”, and not only that, a musical, it comes out that Lina’s voice is, well, terrible. Obviously something must be done. Luckily, Don meets chorus girl Kathy (Reynolds), who has a voice sweet enough to carry the role, and also Don’s heart. Kathy is hired to dub Lina’s voice, and she and Don fall in love despite Lina’s objections. The film is a hit, and as the public clamors for a live performance the truth about threatens to come out. Friday, August 22 – Monday, August 25 Area Premiere! THE GIRL WHO LEAPT THROUGH TIME Fri - Sun at 3:30, 5:30, 7:30, 9:30 (+ Sat & Sun at 1:30; Mon at 7:30, 9:30 (2006) dir Mamoru Hosada w/Riisa Naka [98 min] Inspired by the much beloved novel by Yasutaka Tsutsui, which has been filmed several times, this wonderful animated fantasy from Japan tells the story of Makoto, a typical teenage girl who suddenly discovers that she has the power to skip back and forth in time or “time-leap.” She accomplishes this by comically running, tumbling and, literally, leaping through the air. The power first manifests itself when she escapes an accident at a train crossing and Makoto uses her newfound power for a number of frivolous activities before she realizes the affects and scope of her ability. A surprise hit in Japan, it’s popularity grew to conquer even the latest release from Hayao Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli, THE GIRL WHO LEAPT THROUGH TIME is getting a limited Stateside release thanks to venerable anime dealer Bandai. We hesitate to use the term ‘anime’ when referring to this film, however, since it contains no giant robots, no ridiculous action, and very few of the goofball theatrics that anime is sometimes burdened with. Instead, this film is a charming and beautifully wrought piece of filmmaking that maintains a hazy, relaxed summer vibe throughout and has more of a kinship with last year’s treasured Linda Linda Linda or the work of Miyazaki than with Akira or Cowboy Bebop. Monday, August 18 HAIRSPRAY at 7:15, 9:45 (2007) dir Adam Shankman w/John Travolta, Michelle Pfeiffer, Zac Efron, Nikki Blonsky, Christopher Walken, Queen Latifah, James Marsden [117 min] Adorably plump Tracey Turnblad (Blonsky) has one dream, to be a dancer on the Corny Collins Show. Unfortunately, local teen queen Amber and her mother (Pfeiffer) have other ideas that don’t include plus sizes, big hair, or integration. With the help of her friends and newly invigorated mother (played, almost too well, by John Travolta), Tracey works to integrate the show, win the heart of local heartthrob Link Larkin (Efron), and keep her place as the biggest hair hopper in the county. The songs, modified from the Broadway production of John Waters’ original film, are infectious and will remain in your head for weeks. Be warned, the sight of Travolta in drag probably will too. Warm up your pipes and join the Brattle for this weekend celebrating the sheer enjoyment of belting out a song along with some of your favorite stars and films. You are encouraged to dress as your fave characters from the films. Expect surprises for many of these screenings! GREASE and HAIRSPRAY are SING-A-LONG prints that include lyrics on-screen for the songs. MOULIN ROUGE, THE MUPPET MOVIE and SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN will have either lyric sheets or projected lyrics for the audience to sing along with. Mon at 3:30; Tue at 3:30, 7:30 (1940) dir William Wyler w/Davis, Herbert Marshall, James Stephenson [95 min There has been a murder. Jeff Hammond is dead and Leslie Crosby (Davis) has confessed, blaming it on self-defense. Leslie’s husband (Marshall) sends for his lawyer, who is suspicious of Leslie, even more so when a damning letter shows up, proving that there was a previous relationship between Hammond and Leslie. The letter is in the possession of Hammond’s widow, who is willing to part with it for $10,000, which Leslie quickly submits from her unknowing husband’s account. Little does Leslie know that her freedom may end up costing her more than she initially bargained for. This excellent early noir features Davis at her boldest and best. Marked Woman Double Feature! Mon at 1:30; Tue at 1:30, 5:30, 9:30 (1936) dir Lloyd Bacon w/Davis, Humphrey Bogart [83 min] This breezy B-movie shows Bette’s power both on and off screen. She appears as Mary a street-smart ‘hostess’ at a ruthless gangster’s club. She is pressured by a crusading D.A. (Bogart) to give up the goods on her boss but she refuses, until her naïve sister is murdered and her boss’s thugs rough her up to keep her quiet. Even as a young star, Bette made her voice heard – when her makeup seemed too unrealistic, she took matters into her own hands and had her own doctor apply bandages as if she had been severely beaten. Monday, August 11 & Tuesday, August 12 Now, Voyager Mon at 2:30; Tue at 2:30, 7:15 (1942) dir Irving Rapper w/Davis, Paul Henreid, Claude Rains, Gladys Cooper [117 min] Charlotte (Davis), a tightly wound Boston spinster, finds independence from her domineering mother after a breakdown lands her in the care of a psychiatrist (Rains). Freed from her mother’s influence she falls for Jerry (Henreid), an unhappily married man, on a South American cruise but the star-crossed lovers must part at its end. Back in Boston, Charlotte takes in Jerry’s troubled daughter and they meet again, but can they find happiness in a society that frowns on their relationship? This pinnacle of melodrama has often been imitated (and spoofed) but its poignant romanticism has not diminished over the years. Dark Victory Double Feature! Mon at 5:00; Tue at 5:00, 9:45 (1939) dir Edmund Goulding w/Davis, George Brent, Humphrey Bogart, Ronald Reagan [104 min] Socialite and wild child Judith (Davis) has been diagnosed with a brain tumor by the dashing Dr. Steele (Brent). An operation is performed, after which Judith and Dr. Steele fall in love. However, unbeknownst to Judith, the operation is not a success; she has mere months to live, with death being signaled by rapidly failing eyesight. Thinking he is protecting her, Steele chooses not to tell her the truth. Unfortunately, Judith stumbles across her files and leaves Steele, returning to her wild ways. Will Judith and her love reunite before everything fades to black? Monday, August 18 & Tuesday, August 19 What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? Double Feature! Mon at 2:00; Tue at 2:00, 7:00 (1962) dir Robert Aldrich w/Davis, Joan Crawford [134 min] Jane (Davis) was a renowned child actress whose star, sadly, faded as she aged. Her civilian sister Blanche (Crawford), alternately, has developed into a beautiful and talented actress. However, at the height of her career Blanche is involved in a crippling car accident, which sends her into a life of seclusion with the now alcoholic and jealousy-ridden Jane. The two descend into madness, battling their separate but, in the end, all too similar demons with horrific and deadly results. A legendary, scene-gobbling masterpiece of gothic drama from two of Hollywood’s most enduring stars. Hush... Hush, Sweet Charlotte Mon at 4:30; Tue at 4:30, 9:30 (1964) dir Robert Aldrich w/Davis, Olivia de Havilland, Joseph Cotton, Ages Moorehead, Bruce Dern [133 min] Wealthy spinster Charlotte (Davis) has never gotten over the death of her married lover 37 years earlier, and neither has the town in which she lives. The townsfolk believe Charlotte is to blame, forcing her into seclusion in her mansion with her loyal housekeeper Velma (Moorehead). Highway construction threatens to force Charlotte from her home, causing her to call her cousin Miriam (Havilland) for help. However, Miriam seems to have other motives as she and her lover attempt to claim Charlotte’s fortune by their own terrifying means. Monday, August 25 & Tuesday, August 26 The Whales of August Mon at 5:30; Tue at 3:00, 7:15 (1987) dir Lindsay Anderson w/Davis, Lillian Gish, Vincent Price, Ann Sothern, Mary Steenburgen [90 min] The last great role for several screen legends, THE WHALES OF AUGUST is a rarely screened and subtly composed gem. It is the simplest of stories, two aging sisters, long at odds, gather at their family’s house in Maine for perhaps one last summer. There is a possible romance and the failing health of one sister, but this is an elegiac, modest film. Anderson’s casting of so many aging stars allows the audience to palpably share the nostalgia of the film’s characters. A Stolen Life Double Feature! Mon at 3:15; Tue at 5:00, 9:15 (1946) dir Curtis Bernhardt w/Davis, Glenn Ford, Dane Clark [109 min] Kate (Davis) and her twin sister Patricia (also played by Davis) both fall for the charming Bill Emerson (Ford) while on a boat trip home to New England. Patricia steals Bill away from her sister, sending Kate into a deep depression. While Bill is away on a trip, Kate and Patricia are involved in a sailing accident. Patricia is drowned, but Kate washes ashore alive. She is mistaken for Patricia, which allows her to steal back the man of her dreams. Not available on DVD The story remains the same throughout all versions however, Harrison Ford stars as Deckard, a futuristic detective who specializes in a chasing down ‘replicants’ – lifelike androids designed to live for a brief period of time and then ‘die’ so as not to rival their human masters. Deckard is hired to track down a particularly dangerous group of replicants who are searching for their inventor in order to get what everyone wants: “more life!” BLADE RUNNER is, to this day, one of the most influential science-fiction films of all time, blending film-noir and high-tech in a prototype for ‘cyberpunk,’ and one of the most authentic seeming visions of the future in all of film. “One of the greatest American films of the Eighties has just gotten even better.” – The New York Film Festival WEDNESDAYS THURSDAYS DISTURBED SUBURBS Wednesday, July 16 INVASION OF THE BODYSNATCHERS Thursday, July 17 The Fifth Annual Trailer Treats at 3:30, 5:30, 7:30 (1956) dir Don Siegel w/Kevin McCarthy, Dana Wynter [80 min] The undeniable height of paranoid filmmaking in the US, the 1950s also saw the start of a telling shift in the population – out of the major cities and into the suburbs. BODYSNATCHERS is typically read as a thinly veiled commentary on the threat of Communism but it can also be seen as a telling exposé of the conformity that threatened to choke individuality out of suburbia. By now, the plot is part of American myth – mysterious pods from outer space create perfect, complacent clones of their human ‘hosts’ while a human doctor pieces together the threat and vainly tries to warn the populace. CineMental Presents! GENDER REDESIGNER at 9:30pm (2007) dir Johnny Bergman w/fAe Gibson [72 min] Follow fAe over the course of 5 years as she begins to question her gender and decides to surgically modify her body. This intimate fun filled adventure makes you wonder how fAe can handle beginning hormone treatment, having his breasts removed, and drag kinging – all in the middle of rural Western Pennsylvania. While transitioning from female to male, fAe makes a startling discovery about the balance between his masculine and feminine sides. Can she succeed living as a man in the middle of farm country? Tickets for CineMental are $10. PLUS Trailer Smackdown 2008 Doors at 7:00pm The Brattle’s annual celebration of summer is back! Thursday, July 24 VOLVER at 2:15, 7:00 (2006) dir Pedro Almodovar w/Penelope Cruz, Carmen Maura, Lola Duenas, Yohana Cobo [121 min] The latest award-winning film from the fantastic Spanish director, Pedro Alodovar, continues his present trend of downplaying the comedy and sex of his earlier films and playing the melodrama straight – well, almost straight. In this film, Cruz plays Raimunda, a woman trying to support her wayward husband and teenage daughter, who gets some unexpected assistance from the playful ghost of her dead mother. An extremely charming paean to female power and the strength of family. Wednesday, July 23 Free Screening! AMERICAN TEEN Preview at 7:30 Screening! (2008) dir Nanette Burstein [95 min] AMERICAN TEEN is the touching and hilarious Sundance hit that follows the lives of four teenagers - the jock, the popular girl, the artsy girl and the geek - in one small town in Indiana through their senior year of high school. We see the insecurities, the cliques, the jealousies, the first loves and heartbreaks, and the struggle to make profound decisions about the future. Don’t miss your chance to be the first see this great documentary. Ticket buyers for the 6pm show of THE BREAKFAST CLUB get priority seating for this special free screening. THE BREAKFAST CLUB at 3:30, 5:30, 9:30 (1985) dir John Hughes w/Emilio Estevez, Anthony Michael Hall, Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald, Ally Sheedy, Paul Gleason [95 Min] As we jump from the 50s to the 80s, we join a suburban program already in progress – the conformity of 50s America has spread to a third generation but they have fractured into almost archetypes at this point. 80s teen flick king, Hughes, takes these archetypes (the nerd, jock, derelict, etc) and puts them in the Petri dish of Saturday detention at a suburban high school. The teens find something with each other that they have been trained not to expect – common ground and a nascent sense of community that, hopefully, they will carry into the rest of their lives. Along the way, THE BREAKFAST CLUB manages something remarkable itself: it manages to be utterly sentimental while at the same time entirely true to life. TALK TO HER Double Feature! at 4:45, 9:30 (2002) dir Almodovar w/Javier Camara, Dario Grandinetti, Leonor Watling, Rosario Flores, Geraldine Chaplin [112 min] TALK TO HER explores themes of hope, faith, friendship and unexpected love from the perspective of two men who meet in a hospital where their lovers lie in comas. Marco is a reporter whose bullfighting girlfriend has recently been gored by a bull. Benigno is a nurse whose only patient is a young ballerina who has been in a coma for four years. He is in love with her but they have never met. Almodovar is not blind to the slightly kinky nature of these relationships, but he also knows about the unpredictability of love and life. Thursday, July 31 BAD EDUCATION at 3:00, 5:00, 7:00 (1968) dir Frank Perry w/Burt Lancaster [95 min] This underrated allegory of 1960s suburban dissatisfaction features Burt Lancaster in one of his most interesting roles. He plays Neddy Merrill, an apparently happy and successful suburbanite who, one evening, startles his friends by declaring his intention to “swim home.” He has noticed that all of the houses in his neighborhood have pools and he decides that he will swim in each one until he reaches his own. THE SWIMMER is a sad, strange film about loneliness among those who seem to have everything. at 2:45, 5:00, 7:15 (2004) dir Almodovar w/Gael Garcia Bernal, Fele Martinez, Daniel Gimenez Cacho [106 min] “A delirious, headlong immersion and re-invention of film noir, a style that has lured countless film makers onto its treacherous shoals. Mr. Almodovar, unlike other filmmakers who lose their bearings, fully understands the degree to which the genre is synonymous with fantasy and a primal longing for the forbidden. The coup de grace of BAD EDUCATION, which ricochets back and forth between 1964 and 1980, with a finale set mostly in 1977, is that here the femme fatale is a predatory transsexual named Ignacio. Once a beautiful boy soprano, he/she was abused by a priest, the principal in his Catholic boys school. As the film deepens and the characters' mistaken and multiple identities accumulate, the priest returns from the past in a new, desperate guise. BAD EDUCATION contemplates the wonder of storytelling itself and the human instinct to embroider reality to make the tales we tell more real and conclusive, if less strictly factual. It insists that stories, the stories within stories, and the fantasies they crystallize, are the best (and maybe the only) tools at our disposal for making sense of it all.” – Stephen Holden, The New York Times Special Screening! Special Screening! Wednesday, July 30 THE SWIMMER BOSTON FILM RACE 2008 at 9:00pm The Boston Film Race will be challenging local filmmakers to create an original short film (4 minutes max) in just 24 hours from Friday, July 25th to Saturday, July 26th. Wednesday, August 6 THE ICE STORM at 2:30, 5:00, 7:30, 10:00 (1997) dir Ang Lee w/Kevin Kline, Joan Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Tobey Maguire, Christina Ricci, Elijah Wood, Katie Holmes [112 min] Ang Lee’s spectacular and note-perfect reproduction of 1970s suburbia features a powerhouse cast portraying two intersecting families. Husbands and wives drift apart, teenagers drift towards the city, and the rest just sort of drift – slipping on moral thin ice until the real ice storm arrives and they are all shocked back to reality. Beautiful, touching and thoughtful, THE ICE STORM is truly a film to be savored on the big screen. Wednesday, August 13 HALLOWEEN at 5:30, 7:30, 9:30 (1978) dir John Carpenter w/Jamie Lee Curtis, Donald Pleasance, P.J. Soles [91 min] Beginning with John Carpenter’s HALLOWEEN, the exaggerated underbelly of suburban teen life came to life in the alternate reality of the slasher film. These films painted a world where adults were either absent or ineffectual or, occasionally, the ultimate the cause of their children’s terror. The slasher film craze reached its apex in the 80s with multiple sequels and imitators, but HALLOWEEN remains in a class all its own. It’s Halloween night and Laurie (Curtis) is babysitting. Everything seems quiet and peaceful, despite her having seen a strange man during the day, until escaped mental patient Michael Myers turns up and starts terrorizing Laurie and her friends. Wednesday, August 20 ALL THAT HEAVEN ALLOWS at 3:30, 5:30, 7:30 Douglas Sirk, the legendary purveyor of mid-century melodrama, directs this story of a middle-aged widow (Wyman) with two grown children who falls for Rock Hudson’s younger man (who wouldn’t). The only problem is that Jane is a member of the country club set and Rock is a gardener. Despite their differences, the two start a romance but will upper class suburban morals get in the way of them finding happiness. Many of Sirk’s films were belittled at their release but over time they have aged into perfectly preserved pockets of ‘50s social norms and their consequences. CineMental Presents TRANS ENTITIES: THE NASTY LOVE OF PAPI’ AND WIL at 9:30pm (2007) dir Morty Diamond [58 min] TRANS ENTITIES is a unique, sexy, thought provoking and above all touching portrait of a real transgender couple, Papi’ and Wil, who open themselves up to the camera like you have never seen before. They are a perverted, loving, polyamorous couple who identify as Trans Entities, a word they have coined to describe their gender identity. This film is 4 parts BDSM, polyamory, sexuality and gender documentary and 3 parts hot sex scenes. They discuss their gender expression, the perils and joy of poly love, and you see them negotiating a role play scene. The film gives the viewer an engagingly raw look into Papi and Wil's uninhibited, joyous and exploratory life. This film contains explicit sexual images. No one under 18 will be allowed. Tickets for CineMental are $10. Wednesday, August 27 JUNO at 3:30, 5:30, 7:30, 9:30 (2007) dir Jason Reitman w/Ellen Page, Michael Cera, Jennifer Garner, Jason Bateman, Allison Janney, J.K. Simmons [96 min] Quirky 16-year-old Juno (Page) finds herself pregnant after a onetime encounter with her best friend Paulie Bleeker (Cera). After initially choosing to have an abortion, Juno changes her mind and instead finds a wanting family in the Pennysaver to whom to give her unborn child to. Vanessa (Garner) and Mark (Bateman) Loring are the picture of normal, Vanessa especially contrasting with Juno’s sharp wit and pragmatic personality. As her belly grows so do her relationships with Paulie and the Lorings, revealing that things in suburbia are not always the way that they seem. Forget the Oscar hype and the backlash, this cleverly written film featuring one of our favorite young actresses and a great supporting cast (especially Simmons and Janney as Juno’s parents) is a well-crafted gem. BOSTON FILM RACE 2008 at 9:30pm See Wednesday, July 30 for description. Thursday, August 7 ALL ABOUT MY MOTHER at 3:00, 5:00, 7:00 (1999) dir Almodovar w/Cecilia Roth, Marisa Paredes, Penelope Cruz, Antonia San Juan [101 min] This brilliant film was the deserving winner of the Best Foreign Film award at the 2000 Academy Awards. It tells the story of a woman’s transformation after the death of her son, of her journey back in time to face the ghosts of her past, and her search for outlets for her mothering instincts. ALL ABOUT MY MOTHER is the first of Almodovar’s recent films to really exhibit his refinement as a director. So distinct from his earlier films that it clearly signifies a new era in his directing and writing. Special Brattle Benefit! BRATTLE TRIVIA NIGHT Brattle at 9:00pm Benefit! Thursday, August 14 WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN at 5:30, 7:30, 9:30 (1988) dir Almodovar w/Carmen Maura, Antonio Banderas, Julietta Serrano [90 min] The breakthrough, international hit that truly launched Almodovar into the spotlight, WOMEN ON THE VERGE is a terrific farce about love, loss, secrets and the adverse affects of a big batch of spiked gazpacho. Thursday, August 21 LIVE FLESH at 2:45, 7:15 (1997) dir Almodovar w/Javier Bardem, Francesca Neri, Liberto Rabal, Angela Molina, Jose Sencho, Penelope Cruz [103 min] When he is sent to prison, Victor (Rabal) unknowingly becomes a catalyst for a young cop (Bardem), the seasoned partner, his philandering wife, and the diplomat’s daughter who put him there. Years later he emerges, still young, to discover their lives transformed while his has grown stagnant. Haunted by anger, Victor seeks revenge. A typically tragic-comic tale of revenge, redemption, hope and the ways of fate from Almodovar. Double Feature! FLOWER OF MY SECRET at 5:00, 9:30 (1995) dir Almodovar w/Marisa Paredes, Joaquin Cortes [103 min] Paredes is terrific in this portrait of a successful romance writer on the verge of a breakdown. With a mostly absent military-man husband and a stagnant career weighing on her back, she’ll try anything to change her life. Prime Douglas Sirk tribute by the modern master of melodrama. Thursday, August 28 LAW OF DESIRE at 3:00, 7:30 (1987) dir Pedro Almodovar w/Eusebio Poncela, Carmen Maura, Antonio Banderas [102 min] Almodovar’s early formula has always been pretty obvious: take the melodrama of Douglas Sirk, pump up the camp, sex and comedy and come up with some of the freshest filmmaking of the past quarter century. The Almodovar formula is in full force as this tale of the life and loves of Pablo, a successful film director, which swings from crime thriller to romance to X-rated soap opera. Considered by many to be the pinnacle of early Almodovar, don’t miss this rare screening! Double Feature! MATADOR at 5:15; 9:45 (1986) dir Almodovar w/Antonio Banderas, Nacho Martinez, Assumpta Serna [110 min] A young and hunky Antonio Banderas co-stars in this insistently raffish, blackly humorous, surrealist sex comedy about the impossibility of love between two people obsessed with killing – and the innocent man stuck in the middle. In essence, Fellini – with a great deal of help from his cast and his erstwhile collaborator Nina Rota – dared to simplify, and to create a film with the power of a fairy tale. 3:30, 5:30, 7:30, 9:30 FLYER PRODUCTION: Ned Hinkle, Layout; Ned Hinkle & Andrea O’Meara, Flyer Descriptions.
