Inaugural First Mondays Connecticut Recap
April 9, 2012
First Mondays held its first Connecticut gathering on April
2nd at the Douro Restaurant in Greenwich.
Approximately 25 people attended the event where they
enjoyed wonderful hors d’oeuvres and drinks, as well as
met new people and old friends. Paula Darlington, who
organized the event gave a short description of the I Can
Still Do That Foundation’s mission, which is to help put
America back to work by creating new, sustainable jobs.
Most of the time, however, was devoted to networking.
Among the Foundation Advisors in attendance were: Paula
Darlington, Ric Zivic, Jeff Peterson, Ron Dobey, and Aaron
Beaudette. Jeff Peterson brought the most guests,
including some fellow Vassar College alumni. A good time
was had by all.
Future events will include guest speakers from the
Fairfield County area. The next event will be held mid
summer in the Greenwich area as well. More details on this
will follow in the upcoming months.
We look forward to seeing all our attendees as well as new
ones in the future. Anyone who is interested in being a

New Exhibition & Artists ReceptionIn Celebration of Our

In mezzotint engravings of typewriters, sewing machines,
electric fans, vintage textiles, old mining equipment,
movie cameras and other mundane items. Carol Wax
examines how perceptions of objects change from stateof-the-art to artifact to art. Using the mezzotint medium's
dramatic lighting effects, wax transforms the ordinary into
extraordinary and animates the inanimate.
In addition to her masterful prints is a display of plates,
state proofs and tools with a detailed description of this
intriguing and meticulous process.
Carol Wax, author of The Mezzotint: History and Technique
(Abrams, 1990, 1996) is one of the world’s leading
authorities of this centuries old engraving technique. Her
award winning prints are in numerous museum collections,
including the Smithsonian, Philadelphia and Metropolitan
Museums of Art.

Karl Berger’s Improvisers Orchestra debuted Tuesday,
March 20th as a New York Times Critics Choice at The Jazz
Gallery, 290 Hudson Street, New York, NY. Following a
critically-acclaimed eight-month run at The Stone in 2011,
Karl Berger's Orchestra of 18+ professional string, horn,
and percussion soloists continues to turn improvisational
ideas developed in the 7:30 pm workshop/rehearsal into a
fully formed 9:00 pm performance.
Using his “Music Mind” concept, Karl introduces a new
approach and experience of harmonizing improvised
sound. “The suite-like performances have a warm,
buoyant vibe issuing from brief folkloric-like motifs and
the low-key, common-sense guidance Karl offers his
players” said music critic Howard Mandel. Conducted in
Karl’s inimitable style, developed at the legendary
Creative Music Studio, this orchestra of extraordinary
improvisers explores original themes, melodies from the
world’s folk traditions and compositions written by the
likes of Don Cherry or Ornette Coleman, as well as musical
ideas that arise spontaneously. One of the orchestra's
trademarks is Ingrid Sertso’s uncanny vocalization and
poetry. “I love the atmosphere that Karl and Ingrid
create. For me it’s an oasis in the middle of all these
stressful energies that the city brings.” said composer

The rotating cast of soloists, with a solid core of regulars,

it will feature a film that both the Woodstock FIlm Festival
and Hudson Valley Film Commission were very involved
with.
Join host Stephen Hays of 120dB Films for a very special
presentation of PEACE, LOVE, & MISUNDERSTANDING —
which was produced by BCDF Pictures, and shot with help
from the Hudson Valley Film Commission during the
summer of 2010.
The comedy directed by Bruce Beresford (Breaker Morant,
Tender Mercies, Driving Miss Daisy) boasts a star-studded
cast including Jane Fonda, Elizabeth Olsen, Katherine

the Woodstock Film Festival and Hudson Valley Film

because it broke new ground about female sexuality and
genital anatomy.

people realize their full sexual potential. It integrates
Sheri's Wholistic Sexuality™ model into a practical, fun,
usable guide that will help anyone become the whole,

Sheri's writing the book for another reason, too. It's her

Hello Dear Friends,
It feels like Spring. And a busy time it is. Mission of
Mermaids, Susan Rockefeller's new film, just launched.
We've started working with a new documentary which
uniquely exploits Gwen's long-time presence in Madrid.
We taught our first workshop. And Angela just put
together our first event through Tugg, a brand-new
crowdfunding website for screening: the Dallas premiere
of Crazy Wisdom.

Philly & NYC
That's where Gwen was in March. We had workshops
scheduled in both places, thanks to the efforts of PIFVA
(Philadelphia Independent Film & Video Association) and
the I Can Still Do That Foundation (New York). The
workshop in Philly went very well, and even included
Angela via Skype on a big screen! We were inspired to
work with a group of talented, enthusiastic, thoughtful
filmmakers whose diversity of projects presented gave us
a rush of ideas to share with them. We all agreed that
four hours may not have been enough time. Thanks a
bunch to PIFVA for sponsoring the event, and hosting
Gwen.
In New York, we learned that location, location,
location is everything. Had we given ourselves a bit more
lead time, and asked a few more questions, we would
have secured a venue that NYC filmmakers feel more
comfortable about. Our workshop became a private
consultation, but that worked out fine: nothing beats
one-to-one face time. And we made some new
connections and renewed old. Special thanks to
Fernanda Rossi, the Documentary Doctor, and
distribution expert Peter Broderick for their advice!
We're definitely interested in teaching more workshops
in the future, on community engagement, grant writing,
social media. So if you know of a good venue or an
organization who might like to invite us, let us know!

Here is a pictures from my recent trip to Myanmar
(Burma)...i flew in the day following their first
Democratic election in over 50 years, where they have
been under a military dictatorship for over half a
century. The #1 Buddhist shrine in the world there is one
my favorite spots on the planet i have visited over 20
times-the Shwedagon Pagoda has existed for more than
2,500 years, making it the oldest historical pagoda in
Burma and the world. According to tradition, two
merchant brothers, Taphussa and Bhallika, from the land
of Ramanya, met the Lord Gautama Buddha during his
lifetime and received eight of the Buddha's hairs and it is
located in the nation's capital, Rangoon, also known as
Yangon. I was able to secure them their first world
championship sports competition in 1995, so have had
close relations there for many years. truly remarkable
place...like frozen in time, but the Shwedagon Pagoda is
unlike any place on the planet.

The initial/virtual meeting of the Music Committee took
place on 4/9/12. Nine advisors attended. Discussions were
held about potential mission for the Committee and initial
projects. Ideas included a directory of resources and
advisors, educational industry panels (mentor/mentee);
live music events possibly tied to recorded music
compilation website or project (example
is www.woodstocklive.com); cross promotions/marketing
educational panels, and information sharing. People are

Lot of recent news from March and April: We had a great
kickoff for "Women Who Lunch/Philly". Kudos to advisor
Dr. Jody Whitehouse and her team in Philly on 3.25 (see:
www.womenmentorwomen.org for photos). Similarly,
advisors Paula Darlington, Jeff Peterson and the Greenwich
team, launched "First Mondays/CT" to a nice crowd on 4/2
(see photos at www.firstmondays.com). Our kickoff of our
new screenplay reading series, www.thetableread.org, was
likewise a smash hit on 3.26 in Los Angeles, where many
local advisors were involved, lead by advisors Mike Baez
(writer/director), Jonisha Rios (female lead), Denise
Grayson (Narrator), Davi Santos, Sita Young, and Lisa Gold
(casting director). Our next Table Read will be in NYC on
6.11, produced by NY advisor Tony Wilkes (details to
follow).
As part of the process of casting the Table Read/LA, we
welcomed new LA advisors Tony Adler and Rebecca
Rivera. Please watch Rebecca's upcoming "Hallmark" TV
movie , FIRELIGHT, on ABC Family on Sunday , 4.22 with
Cuba Goodman, Jr. (see: abc.go.com/shows/firelight).
Early April also saw the kickoff of our Music Committee.
Led by Chairman Barry Heyman, the committee took flight
(virtually) on 4.9 and had over 9 advisors in attendance on
the conference call. Discussions included a mission for the
committee and some initial projects (including future
concerts, compilations, educational panels and a directory
of services and resources). Please be in touch with Barry or
myself if you would like to join the committee.
Looking down the turnpike, we have lots of cool events
planned for the next month. In addition to the 6.11 The
Table Read/NY, we have a First Mondays/NYC planned for
5.7 at the Parlour Uptown (250 West 86th Street). As a
special treat we will be screening 2 short films by young
advisors which have been invited to Cannes later this May.
One film is by young advisor, Davi Santos, and the other by
young advisor Ramfis Myrthil. Davi stars in his film and also
produced it. Ramfis produced his film. Its great to see our
young advisors moving up.

([email protected]). Meaningful summer jobs are still
very hard to find and are key to future success for a young
person. Give the gift of knowledge. Help retrain Americans
and put America back to work, one job at a time.
