Tuesday 19 May SP Assembly - Grade 5W 07h25
InterHouse Girls’ Cross Country
Dear Parents, Staff and Pupils
This week we start with first of our reports from different sections of our school
with a comprehensive review of Sport in the Prep School from Miss Shellard.
News from our Sports department
We have some exciting new developments on the extramural front which will
prove to be of huge benefit to both the College and our children. A ‘Dainfern
College Sports Strategy’ is being implemented with the intention of creating
uniformity and consistency between the Prep and High School in the various
sporting codes offered, as well as in terms of the various coaching strategies
and skills applied. By executing this ‘whole school’ Sports Strategy, our vision
is to be a school recognised for sporting excellence.
The College Sports Strategy incorporates the following positions:
College Head of a sports code:
 Responsible for drawing up the whole school strategy for the particular
sports code.
 Drives and promotes the sport at all times.
 Ensures consistent coaching strategies between the Prep and the High.
 Sets up effective channels of communication.
Currently the following staff have been appointed to these roles:
 Ross Greeff: Golf
 Clinton Flynn: Cricket
 Julian Hykes: Hockey
Head of a sport in the Prep or High School:
 Manages the particular code of sport in the respective part of the school.
 Implements approved coaching strategies.
 Ensures effective communication takes place on a daily basis.

Synopsis of last term’s results
I am delighted to report that we had a most successful first term on the
extramural front, with a significant number of children participating in
extramurals. I thank the pupils for their enthusiasm, commitment and
dedication demonstrated towards school activities, they have contributed
positively towards their school.
Our A Swimming Team won all of their League Galas, our B Team won all but
one gala, finishing 2nd and our C Team participated most enthusiastically. We
narrowly missed winning the Prestige Gala, finishing 2 nd by just a few points.
Our Cricket sides generally had a really good season with our U10 A side
being unbeaten in the season! The remainder of our teams won 90% of their
matches. A highlight was our Open A Team who played in the semi-finals of
the Montrose Night Series. Well done on a good season, boys!
Our Chess Team did us proud, winning all their games. There is an excitement
around Chess in the Prep School and our numbers are increasing rapidly.
Our Softball numbers were down this term, which led to mixed results. Both
the Junior and Senior girls thoroughly enjoyed their season, playing with
passion and purpose, and won about half of their games.
New happenings in PE
We are in process of reviewing our entire Physical Education programme to
ensure we focus on the key elements of health and fitness in a fun yet
challenging environment. One initiative is to implement mini tennis with our
resident professional tennis coach, Werner Knuppe, during specific Grade 1, 2
and 3 PE classes. This means that all our JP children will have the opportunity
to play tennis.
On the cards for later during the term are some hockey skills, together with
soccer skills run by Supersport United Soccer and PhysiFun – focusing on
having fun through movement.
We would like to thank our whole
community for your overwhelming
response and contribution to the '67
Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day'
initiative. We very proudly handed over
more than 40 blankets to the '67
Blankets' organisation this week, which
were most gratefully received. These will
be part of the presentation they plan to
make at the Union Buildings on 21 April,
where the aim is to hand over 21 000
blankets from Issue
across the
1 country to
celebrate South Africa's 21 years of
16 April
democracy. After
this, 2014
these blankets
will be returned to us so that we can
distribute them to our Outreach partners.
This is not the end of this Outreach
initiative
for
Dainfern
College,
however! We will continue to knit and
crochet squares for the needy right up to
Mandela Day on 18 July this year. All of
these squares will be used to make
blankets for our own Outreach partners the pensioners supported by Meals on
Wheels, the two Cosmo City crèches
and the schools that we support in
Diepsloot.
Please keep the squares rolling in!
These can be handed in at our Main
Reception and we will sew them into
blankets during Outreach and on
Mandela Day. A reminder that the
squares should be made with 5mm
needles and double knit wool - 25
stitches and 40 rows.
The outpouring of generosity and
support for this initiative has been truly
overwhelming - thank you!

Golf
We are currently investigating a programme for our Grade 1-3 players. At this
stage we have Intro Golf for Grade 0s and a very active programme for our
Senior Prep children. This will be part of our whole school strategy for Golf.
Rugby
For the first time ever, rugby will be an extramural in the Prep School and Prep
Rugby sides will be represented in the League. We are most excited about
this! The format will be full contact, seven-a-side Rugby, with no lineouts or
scrums, and will be played on a quarter field. The official season commences
on 22 June. Pre-season practices start next week, Tuesday 19 May. A letter
has been forwarded to those parents whose children showed interest. Should
you require further information, please contact Nick Watson.
Update on our AstroTurf
There has been a delay on the construction of our AstroTurf due to a critical
need to do additional compaction testing on the bottom right hand field, to
ensure that our field has a stable base. Once this has been completed and all
parties are satisfied, the building of the AstroTurf will commence (hopefully) in
June and will (hopefully) be completed by October.
We are really blessed to have the most incredible sporting facilities at Dainfern
College and I look forward to taking advantage of these facilities and working
with our truly dedicated teachers and coaches to ensure that we do become a
school recognised for sporting excellence!

SA Mathematics Challenge 2015
Our Senior Preparatory Mathematics Department has registered for the South
African Mathematics Challenge this year and pupils are busy with their first
round paper. The Grade 4 classes have already completed their first round and
we are very excited about those who made it to the final round.
The final round takes place on 29 July 2015 and invitation letters will be
extended to the pupils who qualified for this round. I wish all our budding
mathematicians the best of luck: I know they are going to do us proud.

Values Award
This week’s values Award goes to Simone Killops for Self-discipline: For
putting her heart and mind into reading and completing all the Bookworm tasks.
She has also shown exceptional diligence in her learning across the curriculum.
Kidi’s Korner
Last week’s question: Joseph builds 3-legged stools and 4-legged tables.
Last month he used 72 legs to build 3 more stools than tables. How many
stools and how many tables did he build?
Last week’s answer: 12 stools and 9 tables.
This week’s question: Laura has cats and birds as pets. The pets have a total
of 10 heads and 28 legs. How many cats does she have?

We have had a wonderful start to our
winter term!
After the second round of the National
Eisteddfod
Young

Competition, 104 music students made
it through to the Quarter Finals out of
20 000 candidates who entered the
National Eisteddfod. Of the 104, the
following
Dainfern

Prep
pupils got through:
Grade 2: Fadzai Ndou and Sophie

Extramurals
Our Netball season commenced last week with Dainfern College playing against
St Mary’s, one of our strongest oppositions. The Soccer Season ‘kicked off’ this
week with matches against Bryanston Primary. We are looking forward to an
enjoyable and successful sports season.
Pre-season training
In preparation for the season, we are introducing ‘pre-season field / outdoor
hockey and rugby training. Practice sessions will be kept low key as we are
aware that our children are extremely busy on the extramural front as it is.
Unfortunately practices are scheduled for fairly late in the afternoons so as to
avoid children having to choose between sports while also taking field
availability into account. Rugby preseason training will start next week, from
Tuesday 19 May. Hockey will start on 8 June. Details will be uploaded to the
website and children will be notified accordingly.
Logistics
A reminder that each child is expected to participate in at least one extramural
per term. If two practice sessions are indicated on the timetable, SP children
must attend both sessions and JP children are strongly encouraged to do the
same. Should a child be participating in a fixture / match, the fixture / match
takes preference to the practice; however, the onus is on the child to personally
excuse themselves with the relevant coach. Parents may also excuse their child
via email prior to the practice.
Captains
Congratulations to the following players who have been elected as captains for
this season’s sports codes. It is a privilege and an honour to represent your
code and we are proud of your achievement! Good luck for the season ahead!
Cross Country: Girls’ Captain: Jenna Kimber; Boys’ Captain: Michael GaitSmith

Cross Country
Our first race of the season was held on Monday at Marks Park, hosted by De
La Salle. We experienced some typically British weather as our runners battled
through the unseasonable rain. Congratulations to the following runners who
achieved top 10 positions:




U10: Teagan Bouchier 5th, Jaimie Piguet 9th; Michael Mulcahy, 8th
U11: Trennon Bettany 8th, Ben Baumhardt 9th
U12: Gaby Gait-Smith 1st, Kaylyn Fuller 8th; Joshua Bergin 3rd
Open: Jenna Smart 1st, Jenna Kimber 3rd, Skyla-Rae Fuller 4th, Bianca Pitt
5th; Michael Gait-Smith 1st, Marcio dos Santos 3rd
Grade 3: Nicole du Plessis
Grade 4: Jaimee Piguet and Erin Ryan
Grade 5: Kelly Liu
Grade 8: Tina Giannopoulos and Joel
Riffel
Grade 10: Nadine Pace and Mark Pettitt
Grade 11: Lloyd Morgan
Of these, Fadzai, Nicole, Jaimee and
Tina got through to the semi-finals (out
of a total of 38 chosen), and then finally
Fadzai was chosen as a finalist. She will
be performing on Saturday at the
Roodepoort Theatre and we wish her
good luck. We are so proud of all our
amazing pupils.
This week we had our first SP Music
assembly of the term, where the Choir
and
a
number
of
individual
pupils performed. We also had our first
JP Music Assembly of the term today.
Again, I was so proud of all the pupils,
as we have only been back one week!
This term is a very busy one, what with
Trinity College, Rock School and Royal
Schools theory and practical exams, as
well as the JP Major Production, the SP
Choir performance at the Linder
Auditorium, the Dainfern College
Interschools Junior Choir Festival, our
SP Talent Show, Founders’ Day and the
High School ‘Dainfern Has Talent’, as
well as a number of soirées, matinées
and other performances! How wonderful
it is to see our remarkable College go
from strength to strength, particularly
here in our Music Centre.
Patti van der Ploeg
Director of Music
Well done to everyone that ran this week. Our next race is on Monday at
Beaulieu Bird Sanctuary.
Ross Greeff
Golf
St John’s hosted us to a wonderful afternoon of nine-hole golf at Royal
Johannesburg Golf Course on Tuesday, 12 May. Emerson Bam played medal
in the A-League and he stroked 35 which is an outstanding score. James
Reeder and Tyrone Bertholdt played in a B-League Betterball Tournament
and they beat their St John’s opponents by three points. Shaun McClatchie,
Alex Utterson and Charles Rose-Innes played in C-League teams and they
won by one point.
Congratulations to our golfers who are passionate and committed to their
sport and school.
Hockey tour
Congratulations to both our Open Girls’ and Boys’ Hockey teams who
participated in the Oakhill Festival in Knysna last weekend. They played good
hockey, had an exceptional tour and kept the Dainfern College flag flying high!
Well done to all!
Special congratulations to both Emma Mulcahy and Sean Fitzsimmons on
their selection by external coaches as Dainfern College’s ‘Most Valued
Players’ throughout the Festival. This is tremendous! Sean was also named
as the ‘Goalkeeper of the Festival, which was so well deserved: Sean was
totally awesome in those goals!
The Girls’ Team were awarded a certificate for ‘Grit and Determination’ and
the Boys’ Team recognised for ‘Fair Play’.
Results: Girls: Won 2 games, drew 1 game, lost 3 games; Boys: Drew 1
game, lost 5 games.
