A gravel drive affords access to the house and is flanked by the parkland rail fenced field to the North and woodland to the South, leading to the lawn which surrounds the house to the South and West. A beautifully maintained walled garden with potting shed and traditional wooden lean-to greenhouse facing south, overlooking the central formal lawn, which is surrounded by gravel paths. Elegantly planted mixed flowering borders and kitchen garden complement this quintessential English garden. The extensive lawn to the South and West abutting the fenced grazing enjoys wonderful views across the Stour Valley. The 48 acres of undulating grazing have been stock fenced and have water available. To the Western boundary, there is a free flowing stream watering the boundary to the village side of the land. There is mature woodland and secondary field gate onto Cemetery Lane. Closer to the house is an area of ancient woodland with many specimen trees, some of which clearly predate the house. There is an interesting raised embankment which suggests considerably earlier settlements on the site. 5 6 SUFFOLK – EAST BERGHOLT Ackworth House stands in an elevated position on the edge of the village of East Bergholt, considered to be one of the most important villages in this part of East Anglia on the Suffolk Essex border. East Bergholt is located on the northern side of the beautiful and historic Stour Valley, where Constable lived and painted many of his finest works.
