News of the Vinoy Club A Private Member’s Country Club Directory From the Membership Director Club Office By Lance D. Moyer – Membership Director Monday–Friday Saturday Sunday Membership Director 727-824-8041 Member Services Coordinator 727-824-8028 Club Accountant/Member Billing 727-824-8006 Member Services 727-824-8015 How it all Began: The Walter Hagen Story Health Club Lance Moyer As the Florida land boom was approaching its apex in 1923, two men were brought together in St. Petersburg by the irrepressible real estate promoter, Gene Elliott. Walter Hagen was golf’s greatest showman. His legacy as the most colorful character the game had ever seen often overshadowed what a supreme player he was. He is generally considered the greatest match player of all Walter Hagen time. He once won 22 straight 36-hole matches in the PGA. Between 1914 and 1929, he won the PGA Championship five times; the British Open four times and the U.S. Open twice. He also won the Western Open five times between 1916 and 1931. Aymer Vinoy Laughner came to St. Petersburg with a vision of what Florida was to become. Youth, wealth and the ambition to help forward the progress he felt was inevitable, were the powers that brought him success as a producer of oil and gas in his home state of Pennsylvania. As a citizen of St. Petersburg, he built for himself an enviable reputation as being always on the side of progress and civic advancement. The Laughner Enterprises owned more than 2,000 acres of valuable property within the City limits. These men were among those gathered on the lawn of Laughner’s Beach Drive home one evening in 1923. A bet ensued and Hagen hit golf ball after golf ball off the face of Laughner’s pocket watch without breaking the crystal. As the golf balls arched and landed on the property across the street, Elliott commented that it would be a beautiful site for a luxury hotel and Laughner should build it and call it the “Vinoy” because it is such a beautiful name. 894-1000, ext. 2857 6:00am – 10:00pm 6:00am – 8:00pm Tracy Decker Victoria Chadsey Monday–Saturday Sunday Recreation Manager Health Club/Pool Supervisor Salon and Day Spa Salon & Spa Manager Tennis Center Monday-Sunday Director of Tennis Tennis Pros Touring Pro Golf Shop-G Monday–Sunday Director of Golf Golf Pro Teaching Pro Clubhouse-C Monday, Tuesday Wednesday, Thursday, Friday Saturday Sunday Restaurant Manager Supervisor Take Out Fred’s Steakhouse-F Sunday – Thursday Friday, Saturday Restaurant Manager Alfresco-A Daily Breakfast: Sunday Chef Restaurant Manager Restaurant Supervisor 2 727-896-8000 6:30am – 5:00pm Randy Mosley John Hanlon Kurt Lang 727-824-8045 11:00am – 5:00 pm 11:00 am – 8:30 pm 6:00am – 8:30pm 8:00am – 8:30pm Michael Gordon David Myers 727-824-8045 727-894-1000, ext. 2117 Closed 6:00 –10:00pm Mark Jenkins 727-894-1000, ext. 2144 11:00am – 9:00pm 9:00 – 11:00am Kimberly Long Michael Gordon Steven Mackenzie Marchand’s-M 727-824-8072 www.marchandsbarandgrill.com Breakfast: Monday – Saturday 6:30 – 11:30am Lunch: Monday – Saturday 11:30am – 2:30pm Sunday Brunch 10:00am – 2:00pm Dinner: Daily 5:00 – 10:00pm Sr. Mngr. Kendall Almerico Crowdfunding is one of the hottest topics in business today. To most folks when they think of crowdfunding they imagine many people making small donations to support a creative endeavor – a new album by an indie artist, or a documentary by a passionate filmmaker. However, Crowdfunding is being utilized more and more to support traditional businesses. This brings up legal questions; are the supporters by their donations “purchasing equity” in the endeavor? Robyn Winters To learn the answer to this and many more legal questions, as well as gain an overall better understanding of Crowdfunding, the VBA welcomes Kendall Almerico. Kendall Almerico is one of America’s leading legal experts on the subject of Crownfunding. He was recently ranked 17th on the list of 800 “Most Influential Leaders in the Crowdfunding Industry” by VentureBeat. Mr. Almerico and his crowdfunding sites have appeared in USA Today, the Washington Post, Forbes, the Washington Times, Huffington Post, the New York Daily News, Business Insider, Fox Business Network and hundreds of newspaper, blog, radio and television interviews including CNN, CBS, ABC, NBC, and FOX. Joshua Seth Joshua has performed at over 2,000 events in over 30 countries. He is an award winning performer at Hollywood's famed Magic Castle; and has starred in four of his own primetime TV specials in Japan and South Korea. Tennis Center Hours Monday – Friday 7:00 am - 8:00 pm MONDAY 9:00-10:30 am 9:00-10:30 am 9:00-10:30 am VINOY vs COLLEGE TENNIS In March, our Vinoy men played Saint Olaf College of Minnesota. An old college team mate of mine (haven’t seen in 35 years, ouch) is their men’s coach so he arranged a match with 6 of his doubles teams to compete against us on their spring break. Ashley and I along with members Jeff Winkler and Ed Reese were able to take the wins while members Mike Reilly and Paul Haggar lost a close 3rd set tiebreaker. The teams of Brian Cesare/Dan Quarles, Lance Shook/Don Howe, Tim Harrington/Erick Matheney, all put up very competitive matches but the younger men prevailed! Summer Time Tuning The summer is a great time to finally dial in that drop shot you don’t own or that pesky lob that always sails long. Whether through lessons or clinics, now is the time(when most leagues are idle) to get out of your comfort zone and push your game to the next level. Ashley, Fabiana, Sheen, Victor and myself are all available for private lessons and clinics. Sometimes when talking with your friends, you discover that they may have the same issues and together you could form your own specialized clinic. So give us a call in the Tennis Center and we are happy to answer any questions you may have or book you an appointment! 6:00 pm-7:00 pm TUESDAY 10:30-12:00 noon 9:00 am 4:00-5:30 pm WEDNESDAY 9:00-10:30 am 6:00-7:30 pm Court reservations and guest policy: Our courts are reserved 48 hours in advance. When booking courts you are allowed to book only one court at a time and you are asked who you will be playing with. This is done to avoid someone else in your party calling to also book a court and now 2 courts are blocked but really only 1 will be used. We understand at the time of booking you may not always know who you’re playing with and that is fine. Though for us to provide the best possible service it would be nice to let us know when you determine it. We have over 20 different leagues that compete here at the Vinoy so we always have requests for particular courts and groupings and we certainly do our best to accommodate when we can. If you know you will not be using your court, it is expected that you are courteous to your fellow members and call to cancel that court as soon as possible. Many times we have a waiting list during prime time(8:30-10:30am,5:30-7:30pm). So please let us know so we can contact those waiting. When bringing a guest it is expected that you would check them into the Tennis Center. The guest fee is $10/person and should be taken care of by you or your guest prior to play. Again, to provide the highest service for you and to give your membership the most value it is important that we all abide by these rules. Thank you for your assistance! Fitness Tips With Sheen Hydrate! O.K. tennis players, it's getting hot out there and as most of you know it's even hotter on the court itself. When it's warm your body perspires to try to stay cool but in our environment of extreme heat and humidity you have to make hydration as much of a priority as your big first serve. Do not wait to become thirsty; you should be drinking fluids before, during, and after tennis to keep your muscles as fresh as possible in order to outlast your opponent. Water or Sports Drinks? Most experts can give you a list of pros and cons for water versus sports drinks but they both serve a purpose. Water will hit you immediately and is most beneficial for cooling and water loss. Sports drinks contain sugar which can benefit for an energy boost but won't give you the immediate hydration that you are looking for. Also, be aware that a sugar high ends with a crash of fatigue. The choice is yours, but I recommend hydrating with water before your matches and drinking a watered-down sports drink or a water containing electrolytes during tennis. After the match, be smart and safe when choosing the right beverage. Then prepare to celebrate your victory. Roles of a Tennis Parent from Fabiana Tennis is one of the greatest gifts you can give your child. Tennis provides many opportunities for kids to learn and develop character by playing by the rules, making their own line calls, respecting officials and opponents, and learning to win humbly and lose graciously . These are all the teachable moments, and parents should take these opportunities to teach character at the highest level. Parents can play a very important role in selecting a program and a coach. Once those decisions have been made, the parent should concentrate on being a supportive and encouraging role model and leave the teaching to the coaches. Let them be responsible for teaching the physical and mental skills necessary for winning. Parents should concentrate on developing those life skills that develop character such as respect, effort, self-control, dedication, overcoming mistakes and adapting to the conditions it will carry over into what your child becomes as an adult. 11 THURSDAY 9:00-11:00 am 10:30-12:00 noon 4:00-5:30 pm Open Clinic – Fabiana Senior Group (reservations required) Ladies 3.0-3.5 Round Robin (reservations required) Men’s Clinic – Victor Open Clinic – Victor Suncoast / Satellite Leagues After School Program (reservations required) Open Clinic – Hans Hans’ Heros (some of the area’s best playing doubles) (spectators welcome) PADL League (spectators welcome) Open Clinc – Victor After School Program (reservations required) FRIDAY 9:00-10:30 am 9:00-10:30 am Open Clinic – Sheen Senior Group SATURDAY 9:00-10:00 am 10:00-11:00 am Men’s Clinic – Victor Women’s Clinic – Victor SUNDAY 10:00-11:00 am Open Clinic – Victor Please make a reservation for all clinics.
