Senate Bill Would Put Brakes On
TxDOT’s Toll Road Promoting
AUSTIN—The Texas House tentatively approved HB 2142, legislation to prevent the Texas
Department of Transportation from promoting toll
roads.
Now the bill, by Rep. Ruth
Jones McClendon, D-San Antonio, moves to the Senate for
consideration.
An identical bill, SB 384
by Sen. John Carona, R-Dallas,
gained Senate approval and
has moved to the House for
consideration.
Either bill, if passed,
would put a clamp on TxDOT’s

practice of using various means
to influence public opinion in favor of toll road
construction.
Under the legislation, TxDOT no longer would
be authorized to engage in marketing, advertising,
or other activities for the purpose of influencing
public opinion about the use of toll roads or the
use of tolls as a financial mechanism.
“TxDOT needs to be committed to the goals of
the public, not just promoting its own goals,” McClendon said.
TxDOT would continue to have the authority to
conduct marketing and advertising activities to
inform the public in regard to the status of pending
and ongoing toll projects.

Scout badge and the Tyler
County Historical Commission’s Sandra Hargrove had
just the project. Magnolia
Cemetery in Woodville
had been hit hard by recent
storms, so Nick organized
a team to take care of
the cleanup. According to
Hargrove though, the guys
went way beyond just a
cleanup.
They repaired things that
were broken, righted headstones that had fallen over,
cleaned headstones and
cleared out overgrown areas in the oldest part of the
Cemetery.
The cemetery holds a lot
of Tyler County History.

Lovelady Downs Chester
The Chester Yellow Jackets traveled to Hudson, Texas in
their continuing quest for a baseball state title. This night
they would face the Lions of Lovelady in the beginning
of a best of 3 series. The winner is one step closer to a
state title and the loser goes home till next season.
For the baseball purist the weekend’s games would
prove to be a nightmare. However, for those who enjoy
a game filled with lots of scoring then Hudson, Texas
was the place to be.

Dream Ends in Central
Tuesday May 19, 2009
On the road again is not only a popular Willie Nelson tune but the saga of the Warren Ladies softball
team. Dubbed the “Road Warriors”, they traveled
first to Willis High School this past week and
dispatched Centerville High School from the state
softball tournament. Led by strong pitching, steady
fielding and two RBI each from Brandi Burns and
Chelsea Walters, Warren moved on to the regional
semifinal series with a 4-2 victory while Elysian
Fields their next opponent was sending Kildare
home by a count of 6-0.

Colmesneil Lions Health Fair
The Colmesneil Lions Club has rescheduled its
Health Fair to Saturday, May 30. The event will be
held in the RB Moffett Gym from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m.
Free Health Screening and $20 lab testing will be
offered, a substantial saving over the normal cost.

Team Roping Benefit May 30
A Team Roping Benefit will be held Saturday, May
30, at 6 p.m. at Riley Ranch, CR 1096, in Woodville
to benefit the Tyler County 4-H One Act Play State
Competition. Team Roping, Round Robin, 15 Headers,
15 Heelers, $150 per man. There will be a concession

Summer Reading Program June 10
Tyler County children are invited to the Summer Reading Program which starts June 10 at 2 p.m. and will
be held every Wednesday until July 1. The program is
one hour long each Wednesday and will feature guest

New Mail Scam targeting Senior Citizens

Recently I was compelled to talk to the readers about
the latest Mail Scam that is circulating in our area. Most
of you have had the constant problems of the getting all
of the (Junk) mail from these Sweepstakes Entries. You
know the drill, (“Congratulations you have won 2 Million
Dollars”) All you have to do is send in a few hundred
dollars to take care of the taxes and processing.
Unfortunately this scam has come close to home for a
lot of our readers. These Sweepstakes Scams have been
doing this for years. Some will even send you a check in
the mail to pay for all those taxes and processing. Then
they will tell you to deposit that check in your checking
or saving account, then send them a Cashiers Check or
Money Order for that requested amount. Of course, what
happens when your bank contacts you days later and tells
you that the check you deposited into your account was
a Counterfeit or Fake. There goes your money forever!
Well, now these people are changing their tactics a little,
probably because of the economy, who knows! But they
are constantly after your hard earned money. They mail
you these notices and they use several different names.
Unclaimed Prizes Unlimited, Award Prizes, Clearing
House Publishers, you know, you have seen them for
years. Now they are just asking you for a little money,
amounts such as, $21.99, $24.99, $20.00 etc.
Their scheme now is to mail you several different Prize
Notifications from several different states and or addresses,
advising you that you have won lots of money. Then asking
you to pay the small processing fee and then your rich!
This is where it happens; You send them a CHECK for
the 20 or so dollars, and they got you! They have just
obtained your banking information and look out! Most

A two year old boy who wandered away from his mother
and fell into the water on the far side of Lake Tejas in
Colmesneil Saturday is doing fine now, thanks to the quick
response of a number of individuals at the facility.
According to manager Tracy Powell, someone noticed
what looked like a shirt floating on the water, which turned
out the child. Two year old Colton Blake fell into the water
on the lake opposite the swimming area (swimming is not
allowed on that side of the lake). When they realized it
was a child, things got hectic as several people headed
for the spot.
Fifteen year old Glenna Prather was first to the scene and
went into the water after the child. And then handed him
out to Powell, who started CPR and her husband, who
had already called 911. An unidentified EMT and a nurse
who happened to be there assisted until the Emergency
Medical Technicians who had been called arrived at the
scene and took over.
Colton was life flighted to Herman Hospital in Houston
who said the quick response and CPR saved the child’s
life.
Powell said she was thankful the incident had a happy
ending. “It was the combined efforts of a number of people
that day that prevented this from becoming a tragedy,”
Powell said.
Lake Tejas is a popular summer destination for Tyler
County residents.
House Pig—If you’ve noticed a very small pig on a leash around town lately,
it’s not hallucinations from too much coffee! Connie Tillery who owns Pearly
brought her by the Booster office for a photo session last week. She is a miniature pot belly pig specially bred as a house pet. She will reach a maximum
weight of around 50 pounds. Too cute!

Jack D. Enloe departed this life
May 19, 2009.
Jack was born the 9th of May,
1929, in Houston, Texas. He
grew up in Chester where he attended public schools and upon
graduation went on to Baylor
University where he earned a
Bachelor’s Degree in Business.
He served in the U. S. Army
two years and then entered the
business world of banking being
associated with banks in Dallas
and Houston. He graduated
Chester High School, received a
BBA at Baylor University , 19461950; served in the U.S. Army
1951-1953; and he graduated
from the Southwestern Graduate School of Banking – SMU
in 1970.
Jack accepted Christ at an early
age and was baptized in Russell
Creek in Chester. He attended
South Main Baptist Church,

No, I’m not from Missouri, nor do
I think of myself as a skeptic. However, I guess I do have a smidgen
of the Doubting Thomas attitude
about me. Any time you want to tell
me something new and different,
I’d rather see a demonstration. If
I can’t see one, I’m likely to try it
myself!
Take shingle splitting for example.
When we moved here in 1994, splitting shingles was an established part
of the Heritage Village demonstration tour. Ewel Wood was doing it,
but a couple years after we arrived,
he died. Somebody asked me if I
would consider filling in for him.
And even though I had never split
a shingle, nor even seen it done, I
agreed to give it a shot.
The closest I had come to this disappearing art was a Little Orphan
Annie comic strip, from somewhere
along the ‘30’s. Annie had occasion
to split shingles for her patron,
Daddy Warbucks, and she introduced me to the froe, the special
tool used for the job. Figuring that
if the little redhead could do it, it
couldn’t be that impossible, I tried
it. As it turned out, it wasn’t. The
hard part, I discovered, was to fill
up a fifteen-minute demonstration
slot! Splitting a shingle takes all of
fifteen seconds, and when you’ve
seen one you’ve seen them all.
Over the years I was able to fill in
the gaps with chatter about different
kinds of wood, what we mean by the
“grain” of wood, how the shingles
are finished and put together on a
roof, and why hand-split shingle
roofs are actually better in some
ways. I built a shingle-horse to hold
the work in place while I smoothed
it down with a drawknife. I even
made a model to show how shingles
go together to make a roof.
Of late I’ve tried to keep the focus
of my spiel on a unique feature of
Village demonstrations: going from
raw material to finished product
right before their eyes. It occurred
to me that very few kids of today
ever get to see such a thing. They
don’t even seem to wonder where
things come from; or just take it for
granted that the artifacts they use
will magically appear in WalMart
or wherever. They have some notion that fruit and vegetables are
products from the soil, and that
animals have to be slaughtered for
meat. But very few of the pre-highschoolers seem to connect sheep,
cotton plants, and/or petroleum with
the clothing they wear, or iron ore
with implements, - - or trees with
shingles.
It is little wonder that they are
amazed at such revelations. I confess
to a renewed astonishment myself,
any time I see the ladies spinning
thread, or the weavers making
cloth. Candle-making
is a bit easier
to grasp, but
blacksmithing and rope
making have
to be seen to
be believed.

in awe at those who have mastered it.
When I think of the old-time smiths
who made fine rifles and swords by
hand, I have to marvel.
We don’t do rope-making or potthrowing demos any more. But they
are not as simple as they seem. Jim
Boone’s rope-making show used
to be a prime feature of the school
tours. He had a gift for drawing the
kids into the action, and always gave
each group a sample of the rope they
had helped to make. But few of the
kids ever grasped that twisting rope
together so that it stays twisted is not
a self-evident process. You have to
twist each strand as you go, then let
them “unwind” as they are twisted
together in the opposite direction.
We have sometimes had bodger
demos at the various festivals. These
specialists showed us how cylindrical wooden articles were made using
pole lathes. In these, a lathe frame
holds the workpiece between two
pivots. A cord is wrapped around the
workpiece. One end of the cord is
attached to a spring pole above the
lathe, the other end to a foot pedal.
The cuts can only be made on the
down stroke, but very fine work can
be done. I once made a pole lathe,
and tried it out a few times. But I’m
not ready to go into production!
It is a comforting thought to me
that the pioneers were not able or
required to master every one of the
various arts we demonstrate. Neighbors depended on one another back
then. One may have been a skilled
blacksmith, another a weaver,
leather worker, or well driller. They
were able to give or receive help as
needed. And what’s the matter with
that?

At a lot of home games, my son can be
found sitting in the front row as close to
the on deck circle as he can get.
Occasionally, Riley peers around the
corner into the dugout to catch a glimpse
of number eleven.
The first step in this process was to
have two Braeden Riley replica jersey’s
made for my son. This was followed
by Riley throwing out the first pitch
to number eleven, meeting Braeden’s
parents, winning
Braeden’s undershirt in a drawing,
driving to A&M to watch his favorite
player and finally meeting Braeden.
The ordinary fan would not know that
Braeden pitched in High School, once
wore number thirteen and is
currently number one in the nation in
hits. Riley’s favorite web site is now
NCAA.com because it allows him to
keep track of his favorite player.
Thank you Braeden Riley for being an
athlete and a person my son can look up
to. Mr. and Mrs. Riley, I say job well
done. I hope my son grows up as well
rounded as yours.
Oh, and the best part, Riley has two
more years to watch his hero!

Couple Wed—Melissa Jill Edwards and Jarrod Glen Conner exchanged vows in a double ring ceremony at River Oaks in Lafayette,
La on April 11, 2009 at 5:30 p.m. Reverend John Vice officiated
the ceremony.
The bride is the daughter of Neill and Phyllis Deary Edwards of
Opelousas. The groom is the son of Glen and Joan Moore Conner
of Woodville, TX.
She was given in marriage by her father. The bride’s gown was
designed by Maggie Sottero and was in Diamond White. The gown
was a one piece, strapless, slim A-line gown with a corset closure
and sweetheart neckline. Lace embellished with Swarovski crystals
descend into a tulle skirt and accented with a Diamond White ribbon
sash.
Maid of Honor was Caitlyn Scott, and Matron of Honor was
Stephanie Booth Edwards. Bridesmaids were Angela Ford, Zoe
Edwards, Lauren Kersten Conner, Teri Byrum, Kelsey Faulk, and
Laura Shelton.
Best Man was Kyle Newsom. Groomsmen were Joseph Conner,
Jess Conner, Cullen Williams, Barry Whisenhant, Kyle Dorociak,
Craig Roberson, and Vijay Nijjar.
Flower girls were Madison Edwards and Mallory Edwards. Ring
bearer was Jacob Edwards. Ushers were Justin Edwards, Jeremy
Edwards, and Matt Cooper.
A reception was held at River Oaks. After returning from a honeymoon in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, the couple will reside in
Houston, Texas.
Conner Graduates—Jess Adam Conner graduated Cum Laude
from Sam Houston State University on May 15, 2009. He received
a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies and a minor in
Mathematics. While in Huntsville, Jess was on the President’s
Honor Roll and was very active in intramural sports. Jess was also
a baseball player on the 2005 State Champion Team and a 2005
graduate of Woodville High School. He is the son of Glen and Joan
Conner of Woodville. Proud grandparents are Carrol and Frances
Conner of Warren, and Travis and Oma Moore of Chester.

‘Intercessors for Children’developing
prayer teams for East Texas Schools
Gloria Russell Children’s Ministry (GRCM) is launching “Intercessors For Children” in East Texas. The goal of this group will
be to encourage the Church to pray for children, and to develop a
prayer team for each school campus in East Texas. A captain for
each team will be appointed who will serve on a roundtable with
the other captains, sharing specific prayer needs for each school.
Prayer teams from all over East Texas will meet on site Saturday,
August 22 at their chosen schools to pray for the campus, teachers
and students.
If you are interested in serving on a prayer team for an East Texas
school or are interested in being a team captain, contact GRCM at

blessing in my life along with
my husband and my church” said
Virginia Baker, of her “Gleaners”
Sunday School Class at First
Baptist Church in Colmesneil.
Nominated as “Teacher of the
Month” by one of her students,
Jewel Taylor, Virginia says she
was called by God into this ministry.
“I wouldn’t be teaching if God
hadn’t called,” she says.
In fact, her student Jewel, “Has
talked Virginia’s into” giving her
the actual notes she dutifully
prepares before for each class.
Jewel wanted them to review for
her own weekly study.
Virginia says, “Sunday School
is the core of the church.”

which is made up of about 1520 senior ladies in the church,

Virginia started her teaching
vocation when she was 18 in
Corpus Christi for a young class
of boys at Bethel Baptist Church.
She’s been involved ever since...
all my life changing to adult
teaching when she was asked by
FBC Comesneil’s Pastor David
Miller in 2001, who asked her
“to pray about” the change from
children’s to adult teaching.
She said “Yes” to God’s call for
her.
The Gleaner’s Class gets it’s
name from the Bible in Deuteronomy 24:19 --“When you reap
your harvest in your field and
forget a sheaf in the field, you
shall not go back to get it; it
shall be left for the migrant, the
orphan and the widow, so that the
Lord your God may bless you in
all your undertakings.”
In ancient, biblical times,
gleaning meant to look for some
left-over or missed produce.
Landowners were mandated
by law to ensure that sufficient
un-harvested food was left, to
enable the poor, the migrant and
the orphaned to survive.
According to Pastor Terry
Stockman when asked what
Virginia’s “value” to the Church
was “in-a-word”, he said without
hesitating “invaluable.”
Virginia is also the FBC Colmesneil Church secretary. for some
17 years.
She is married to Harry Baker,
“the love of her life” and met
him singing in the choir together
at North End Baptist Church in
Port Arthur. The couple moved to
Colmesneil in 1984 after Harry
retired from Texaco. The couple
was lovingly referred to as “Roy
and Dale Evans” for their singing
together in the choir.
“Harry is gifted as an “ intercessory prayer man” and works in
prison ministry and closely with
the heart of First Baptist Church
in Colmesneil.
The couple is carrying out the
purpose of FBC Colmesneil in
“Loving God, Loving others and
Serving the world.”
VBS at Bethel Baptist
will be a ‘Croc Rock’
It’s almost time for Vacation Bible School and at Bethel Baptist
Church in Warren, things will be rocking at “Crocodile Dock”!
The excitement begins at 6 p.m. each Monday through Friday,
June 15-19. But like all fun things, it has to end… and it will at
8:45 each of those nights.
There will be amazing Bible adventures, cool crafts, great games,
awesome music and snacks you can sink your teeth into!
Kids will experience new thrills as Chadder Chipmonk leads them
to the Kokeybad-kokey Swamp in search of story on the legend
of the Monster Croc for his school paper. But it is really just a
legend? Or is there a real, live Monster Croc? They’ll find out as
they journey with Chadder and his buddy Fraider through the lazy,
hazy waters off Crocodile Dock.
During the nightly Bible story time, they’ll experience “God
Sightings” that will bring the stories to life and they’ll get Bible
Memory Buddies to help keep the story alive.
VBS is only three weeks away, so we wanted all children from the
3 year olds to kids up to grade six to start getting ready for unique
adventure with Jacques le Crock and Chadder Chipmonk… June
15 through the 19th at Bethel Baptist Church in Warren.
Jesus tells us in John 15 “This
is my commandment, that you
love one another as I have loved
you.”
In Barnabas Lindar’s commentary on John, he writes “John has
certainly grasped the point that
the internal life of the church
and its mission to the world are
inseparable.”
What that means is that if we
cannot even demonstrate unqualified love for our friends
and neighbors, who can we be
effective in taking the Gospel
out into the larger world?
This failure to love one another
has been going on in the church
since the very beginning. If you
study scripture, you can find
evidence in Paul’s letters, in the
Acts of the Apostles, and in the
letters of John, James and Peter.
Furthermore, if you read church
history, the pages are full of
people disappointing the Lord
Jesus and not really loving one
another—thus making a poor
witness of Christ’s love for the
world.
In our day, I think about the
televangelist scandals where
it comes to light that some TV
pastor has enriched himself at
the expense of the poor who support him by mailed in checks—a
fleecing of the flock, so to
speak.
I believe this inability to love
one another, and thus accede
to the Lord’s commandment to
us, can be traced to that part of
human nature that makes it hard
for us to submit to anyone else. If
you think about it, the only way
to fully live the Christian life is
to unreservedly and completely
submit to the Lord Jesus—for
him to become the actual center
of our life. Where that becomes
dicey for most of us, is that we
really would like to keep just a
little piece of ourselves on the
throne.
If we push Jesus off the throne
and put ourselves in the middle,
he will accept that as our free
choice, but it will grieve him,
nonetheless.
How we love one another is a

In the reading from 1 John for
last Sunday (1 John 5:1-6), we
get this:”for the love of God is
this:that we obey his commandments.” He doesn’t say it is an
option or a suggestion that we
truly have love for one another, it
is a commandment. This means
even for someone we don’t like
or who does something we don’t
like.
It would be foolish to believe
we are ever going to agree on
everything, but I do believe
that trying harder to love one
another meets the Grace of God
to empower us, that we will be
more effective Christians in this
world which is so desperate for
some Good News.

The 10 & Under Tyler County All Star Tantrum softball team

38 Fastpitch Championship Tournament in Nacogdoches on

Tyler County 10’s take third in 38
The Tyler County Tantrum, a 10 & Under All-Star team, traveled
to Nacogdoches this past weekend and finished third in a 12-team
bracket at the 2009 Texas ASA District 38 Championship Tournament. Their finish marked the fourth straight year a Tyler County
team has finished in the top three places in the annual event.
The Tantrum roster was composed of girls selected from the local
league’s six 10 & Under teams and making the trip were Karlea
Belsey, Haleigh Belt, Haley Briers, Emily Cloud, Sabryn Costellow,

The Tantrum won a pool or practice game late Saturday morning
before taking on the Nacogdoches Vibe in their first bracket contest.
The team won the opener and cruised through their next games with
wins over the Hudson Lady Outlaws and the Brookeland Burnt
Orange on Sunday.
The win over Brookeland put the team up against the experienced
Huntington Heartbreakers and the Heartbreakers prevailed, sending
the Tantrum to the loser’s bracket for the first time in the double
elimination format.
With only one loss, the Tantrum faced the Nacogdoches Fury
another one-loss team that had gone down to the Heartbreakers as
well. Down early, the Tantrum rallied late but ran out of time and
the Fury advanced to the championship game.
“Overall, I’m proud of the girls, they played hard and really did a
great job against some very strong teams,” said coach Chris Hammons. “This was a new experience for almost our entire team and
they handled it well. Finishing with back to back losses hurts some
but they all have lots of reasons to hold their heads high, finishing
third in district is pretty special.”
Playing in their first ever
post-season competition, the
Xtreme (Tyler County’s 8 &
Under All-Stars) were impressive, winning two games in the
double elimination event before
falling to the eventual champion
of the 2009 Texas ASA District
38 championship softball tournament in Nacogdoches last
weekend.
“I’m sure the girls would
have liked to advance further
but they played well against
some strong competition,” said
Xtreme coach Brett Smith. “We
were one of fifteen teams and
there were quite a few that had
tournament experience. Taking
everything into consideration,
we did well and I’m proud of the
girls for representing our communities the way they did.”
The Xtreme roster was comprised of Desiree Hallo, Kayla
Merchant, Kaitlyn Odom, Sidney Smith, Lainey Spradlin,
Riley Vaughn, Abby Villa, Leah
White, Shannon Whitehead,
Eveona Williams, and Shayla
Williams. Assisting Smith were
coaches Trevor Odom and Andrew Hallo.
The Xtreme lost their tournament opener on Saturday to the
Lufkin Crush, who would later
face the Hudson Stingers in the
championship game on Sunday.
Forced to play late on Saturday
in their next game, the Xtreme
rallied to stay alive with a win
over the Short Hops.
Advancing to Sunday action,
the Xtreme came out swinging
and defeated Zavalla with a 15-0
run-rule win after 3 innings.
In their next game, they faced
the Stingers and the Hudson
team proved to be strong and
experienced as they handed the
Xtreme their second loss.
“This was a good experience
for all our girls,” added Smith.
“We played well enough to get
to Sunday when a lot of teams
didn’t and I hope that they are
as proud of what they did as I
am.”
Basketball camp set
for June 22-25
The annual Little Eagles Basketball Camp will be held this
year from June 22-25 at the
Woodville Summit. The camp
will hold two sessions each
day – one for boys and girls in
grades 1-4 and one for boys and
girls in grades 5-8.
Although the camp is being
held in Woodville, it is open to
any Tyler County student wishing to participate.
The grade 1-4 camp will run
from 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM
while the grade 5-8 camp will
start at 12:00 PM and end at 2:30
PM each day. Campers will be
requested to check in 15 minutes
early each day.
Camp instruction will cover
dribbling, passing, shooting
and defense in both individual
and team drills with a focus on
teamwork and fundamentals.
The camp staff includes all
Woodville Eagle basketball
coaches.
The cost of the camp is $35
with a $5 discount for each additional sibling attending. For

The Chester Yellow Jackets
traveled to Hudson, Texas in their
continuing quest for a baseball
state title. This night they would
face the Lions of Lovelady in the
beginning of a best of 3 series.
The winner is one step closer to
a state title and the loser goes
home till next season.
For the baseball purist the weekend’s games would prove to be a
nightmare. However, for those
who enjoy a game filled with lots
of scoring then Hudson, Texas
was the place to be. “Pitching”,
as assistant coach Josh Meeker
described it as, “what kept us
in the game. We committed
too many errors but fortunately
our bats came through for us
tonight.”
Paced by a 16 hit attack, the
Yellowjackets prevailed with a
9-8 victory and a 1-0 lead in the
series.
Friday May 22, 2009
The slugfest continued on Friday night only this time Lady
Luck wasn’t on Chester’s side.
They had no answer for the ferocious pounding of Lovelady.
The Lions pounced early and
often and so did the hot bats of
Chester, both teams dealing in
double digit runs, but this time it
was Lovelady evening the series
at one game apiece with a 15 -10
victory.
In the rubber match of the series,
Lovelady simply continued to
hit Chester pitching until it dealt
their season a knockout blow
with a 22-8 victory. It was a
season of fantastic baseball for
the Yellowjackets considering
the work and effort that has
taken a team who could barely
win a game two seasons ago to
a team of district champions and
regional semifinalists.
Although the team will lose a
number of seniors, it has a solid
group of returning diamond stars,
and the future looks bright for
another run next season.

On the road again is not only a popular Willie Nelson tune but the saga
of the Warren Ladies softball team.
Dubbed the “Road Warriors”, they
traveled first to Willis High School
this past week and dispatched Centerville High School from the state
softball tournament. Led by strong
pitching, steady fielding and two
RBI each from Brandi Burns and
Chelsea Walters, Warren moved on
to the regional semifinal series with
a 4-2 victory while Elysian Fields,
their next opponent, was sending
Kildare home by a count of 6-0.
Friday May 22, 2009
Great weather, a gentle breeze and a
packed stadium welcomed the first
pitch at 6:27PM between the Elysian
FieldsYellow Jackets and the “Road
Warriors” of Warren. Elysian Fields
(30-9) came into the game averaging
6.6 runs per game in their last 19 appearances while allowing only 1 run
per game. Warren fell behind early
thanks in large part to poor fielding
however they kept their heads up and
in the fourth Brandi Burns singled
and two batters later Hayley Unruh
delivered a 2 out RBI single to put
Warren on the board.They added another in the seventh when Madalyn
Fry reached on a fielding error and
senior Kat Sisk doubled her home
but it was too little too late. Warren
fell 5-2 in game one.
Saturday May 23, 2009
This game became the game everyone from Warren was expecting on
Friday night. In fact were it not for
the miscues on Friday, Warren very
well could have been up one game
to none instead of down. The Warriors rebounded from Friday’s loss
and showed the heart and soul of
a champion taking Elysian Fields
into extra innings before losing 3-2.
Without a home field to either practice on or call their own this group
of young ladies behind the strength
of their seniors Chelsea Walters and
“Kat” Sisk rose to heights that no one
dreamed possible. Coach Kehtel
and Coach Brown, though they
refuse the credit were the glue that
kept the team together. Another fine
season in a long tradition of success,
District 23-AAchampions and 2009
regional semifinalists.
Just three short seasons ago, Braeden Riley played baseball for
the Woodville Eagles. A 3 time All-District and All State selection,
Braeden parlayed a stellar high school career into an invitation to
become part of a baseball winning tradition at Sam Houston State
University.
Since his arrival in Huntsville, Braeden has become a consistent
asset to the BearKats team. As a true freshman, he hit just .244 in
34 games however whenever you talk about a top flight athlete,
the subject of their work ethic is sure to come up and Braeden
Riley is no exception. Head Coach Mark Johnson says that one of
the biggest differences in Braeden’s improvement this season was
his willingness to get in the weight room and work hard in the off
season. The 25 extra pounds of muscle Braeden now displays has
been part of the reason for his improved consistency both in the
field and at the plate. On the field Riley has become a top notch
pivot man on the double play and his fielding percentage of .979
leaves little room for error. As a switch hitter, Braeden gives the
BearKats some much needed flexibility at the top of the lineup.
He has started all 58 games this season posting a .390 batting
average, good for second best on the team. He, also, ranks second
in total bases with 133, multi-hit games with 36 and third with a
slugging percentage of .480. He boasts a team best 16 game hit
streak as well. In conference play, his numbers get even better. A
batting average of .404, an on base percentage of .428 and a slugging percentage of .457 put him solidly among the team leaders.
His passion for the game according to his coaches is contagious
among his teammates and as Sam Houston State moves into the
meat of their conference schedule, the slick fielding, dependable
hitting of Braeden Riley will be instrumental in their success.
With head coach Mark Johnson, the 17th winningest coach in
NCAA Div 1 history (989 victories and counting)at the helm and
Braeden Riley manning the second base bag, Sam Houston State’s
reign as defending Southland Conference Tournament Champions
may continue for a very long time. In fact, since Coach Johnson
arrived on campus three seasons ago, the BearKats have won the
Southland Conference tournament for three consecutive seasons
causing some to joke that it should be renamed the “Coach Mark
Johnson Post-season Invitational. This week Braeden Riley who
led the nation in hits for the majority of 2009 enroute to setting a
new Sam Houston State record and becoming the all time single
season hit king with 108 for the SouthLand Conference was named
a 1st Team All-Southland Conference member.
Who knows in the not too distant future we may be seeing Braeden
Riley following in the paths of former Sam Houston State standouts
Glenn Wilson(Houston Astros), Fred Beene (New York Yankees)
and Ken Boswell(New York Mets)as a major league ballplayer.
How cool would that be?

Texas Academy of Science, and holds a student membership to
the Geological Society of America. Burnes spent the last two
field seasons doing research in Utahís Uinta Basin searching
for Eocene micro-mammal fossils. He also spent a month in
Belize doing Maya archaeology fieldwork with the University
of Texas. He has co-authored an abstract on the results of his
Uinta field work and currently teaches a historical geology
lab at Lamar. His interests are wide-ranging and include
paleontology, geology, biology, archaeology, and the history
of science. When not studying, teaching, or doing research,
Burnes likes to read and to spend time with his grandfather and
family on the farm.
