His debut solo album, Symphony of Ghosts(October 2014) incorporates themes, characters, imagery, and language from David Adams Richards’ books, and was produced by Jason Michael MacIsaac. Dan’s expressive and original guitar playing is a strong compliment to his unique approach to songwriting. Hailed as “one of the finest new songwriters in Canada,” (Tom Power, CBC) ECMA and Music Nova Scotia Awardnominated songwriter Gabrielle Papillon sings stories real and imagined. Words, melancholy melodies, and lush harmonies are her currency. Papillon’s fifth offering, ‘The Tempest of Old’ is big and dark, orchestral and defiant. 8:45 PM - 9:15 PM Kim Harris 11:45 PM - 12:15 AM Christina Martin Piano and acoustic guitar driven melodies with elements of pop, folk and soul, delivered by lush instrumentation and powerful, dynamic vocals. With her fifth album ‘It’ll Be Alright’ and live show the artist has reached a place where the ghosts of her musical heroes freely mingle with pop-rock’s modern architects. A powerful album, a killer band – for Christina Martin, things are shaping up to be a lot more than alright. 9:30 PM - 10:00 PM Ryan Cook THIS ARTIST PRESENTED BY Ryan Cook, a former heavy metal singer turned folk songwriter combines modern satire with vintage western music in a hybrid of ballads and up beat novelty songs. Not so much a follower of the blues “lifestyle,” Garrett is a vibrant and talented guitar player with the makings of a long career ahead of him. Market Overview Doing Business in Germany Rodd Grand Hotel Yarmouth - Yarmouth/ Shelburne Rooms 1:00 PM - 1:50 PM This session requires pre-registration. Type: Presentation Track: Export Training Presenter: Claudia Seeber - Trade Commissioner, Embassy of Canada (Berlin) Germany is one of the most attractive business locations in the world. It is Europe’s biggest economy and largest market. As the third largest music market in the world, Germany holds a wealth of opportunity for musicians. In 2013, the country made 1,023.9m ($1,361.1m) in recorded music revenue and grew 1.1%, according to IFPI figures. While the recorded music market is still pretty profitable (73% of Germany’s recorded music revenues last year came from the physical market and 21% from digital), the live market is even bigger. Germany has 80 cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants and 13 metropolitan areas with more than 500.000 people. Known for its diversity, international acts have a decent chance of gaining traction in the country. And there are no radio quotas that say stations must play a certain amount of German artists. Stars — and the industry power brokers who make their fortunes — have learned to prioritize sexual attractiveness over talent as they fight a crowded field for movie deals, magazine covers, and fashion lines, let alone record deals. This focus on the female pop star’s body as her core asset has resigned many women to being “short term brands,” positioned to earn as much money as possible before burning out or aging ungracefully. Lieb explores the sociological forces that drive women into these tired representations, and the ramifications on the greater social world. Why is rock generally assumed to be created and performed by men? Marion Leonard explores different representations of masculinity offered by, and performed through, rock music, and examines how female rock performers negotiate this gendering of rock as masculine. A major concern of the presentation is not specifically with men or with women performing rock, but with how notions of gender affect the everyday experiences of all rock musicians within the context of the music industry.
