SharePoint, an existing IT platform within the company, was selected to offer connectivity among employees and effective reporting of environmental data. The system is real-time based displaying the latest updates in reported data as well as respective changes in environmental KPIs. A network of data input files were designed and uploaded per site and linked to a master sheet in which all data are collated and automatically processed towards its respective aspect, i.e. emission inventory, gas flaring analysis, waste inventory, etc. Results of data analysis were linked to two main output files: Site HSE HQ HSE Environmental Master File Dashboard HSE Data Input File Safety Master File Report Template 1- Performance reports for each operating site highlight monthly and year-to-date performance; 2- Environmental Dashboard displaying performance gauges and graphical interpretations of data, such as KPIs and emissions break down by source. The tool was launched for user testing and training in mid 2010 in order to familiarize reporting parties with the new tool. Feedback from users and results from testing of the automated data analysis were incorporated in December 2010. The online tool has officially replaced the old manual reporting system in January 2011. Health Master File Excel Work Book Excel Sheeet within a Work Book The main realized advantages of the system include: • • • • Reduced typos/errors, Regular tracking of operational events, Utilizing trending tools with fixed dashboard, Performance Dashboard that is updated on a monthly basis for operating sites and Company Management. The application is planned to incorporate the remaining elements of HSE, namely Health and Safety, to minimize the data entry effort from source and facilitate data analysis and reporting by the HSE Department. To enhance the management and reporting of corporate environmental performance, an online reporting tool was developed in-house in 2010. The developed tool has cost-effectively eliminated any unnecessary cost in purchasing reporting software by using ZADCO's existing IT infrastructure (SharePoint Intranet Portal). 19 HSE Focus FOOD POISONING Food borne illness results from eating food contaminated with bacteria (or their toxins or other pathogens such as parasites or viruses). Bacteria may be present on foods at purchasing. It may also grow on certain foods if they are not handled, or stored properly. Additionally, raw meat and poultry may become contaminated during harvesting through processing. Severity of food poisoning depends on the type of contaminant and the amount eaten. Symptoms can develop rapidly within 30 minutes and can range from mild to serious and include abdominal pain, cramps, nausea, diarrhea, fever, and dehydration. However, food poisoning can be especially dangerous for babies, children, the elderly, pregnant women, and those in poor health. SELF CARE AT HOME Short episodes of vomiting and small amounts of diarrhea lasting less than 24 hours can usually be cared for at home. Do not eat solid food while nauseous or vomiting but drink plenty of fluids. Small frequent sips of clear liquids (those you can see as clear water and apple juice) are the best way to stay hydrated. Avoid alcoholic, caffeinated, or sugar drinks. if possible, over-the counter rehydration products made for children are good to use if available. After successfully tolerating fluids, eating should begin slowly when nausea and vomiting have stopped.Consider eating rice, wheat, breads, potatoes, cereals (low sugar cereals). Lean meat and chicken (not fried) to start in small amounts. PREVENTING FOOD POISONING GOOD HYGIENE AT HOME There are four main things to remember for good food hygiene, we have called them the 4c's. CLEANING It is important to wash your hands regularly, especially: Zadco MAY - JUNE 2011 - After visiting the toilet. - After handling raw foods. - Before touching ready-to-eat foods. and remember .... - Do not handle food when you are ill with stomach problems, such as diarrhea or vomiting. COOKING Proper cooking kills food poisoning bacteria. It is important to cook food thoroughly, especially meat. Make sure that food is cooked right and throughly. When reheating food make sure it is very hot all the way through and do not reheat it more than once. CHILLING It is very important to keep certain foods at the right temperature to prevent bacteria growing or toxins forming. If food that needs to be chilled is left standing at room temperature, food poisoning bacteria can grow and multiply to dangerous levels. CROSS-CONTAMINATION Cross-contamination is the transfer of bacteria from foods (usually raw) to other foods. The Bacteria can be transferred directly when one food touches (or drips onto another, or indirectly, for example from hands, equipment, work surfaces, or knives and on the utensils. Cross-contamination is one of the major causes of food poisoning. To prevent cross-contamination: - Always wash your hands thoroughly after touching raw food. - Keep raw and ready-to-eat foods separate. - Store raw meat in sealable containers at the bottom of the fridges, so it cannot drip onto other food. - Use different chopping boards/work surfaces for raw food and ready to eat food. - Clean knives and other utensils thoroughly after use with raw food. 20
