The city lies at the border of two geographical regions: the Vistula Lowlands and the Elbl g Height. It is here that the travel along the unique Elbl g Canal starts. The canal is equipped in a system of locks and inclined planes powered by water. Tourists, for whom visiting merely Elbl g city is not enough, should take a trip to Frombork, Gda!sk, Malbork, or one of the Tower of St. Nicholas Cathedral in Elbl g many smaller surrounding towns (see Chapter 3, p. 33). From the south, we can get to Elbl g by the ...historically European route E77 (named “seven” by the Poles) and Elbl g is one of the oldest Polish cities. Excavations in Elbl g Old Town in Elbl g is one of the largest in Europe, in terms of surface area covered by exhaustive excavations. Due to a huge amount of excavated monuments, the oldest of which date back to the thirteenth century, we can learn what the daily life of Elbl g inhabitants looked like, how they lived, worked, played, dressed or what they were eating. Among the hundreds of thousands of objects found on the site, there are musical instruments, plates, toys, weapons and glassware. Little tourists at Targowa Gate then that the manufacturing establishments were set up, including a brewery, a cigar factory, railway locomotive factory and car factory. The shipyard founded by Ferdinand Schichau was of a special importance: it produced torpedo boats, submarines and ... railway locomotives. In 1945 Elbl g was back within the Polish borders. As a result of war operations, however, about 65% of the city had been destroyed, including the historic tenements in its oldest part. The majority of the former city residents left Elbl g, and the reconstruction works were managed by displaced people. ...sportily Elbl g is a city with Europe’s largest outdoor swimming pool. It also has two sports halls and an indoor swimming pool. Winter sports enthusiasts can use two ski-lifts and an ice rink in the winter season. On a cloudy day you may go to a gym or fitness club. Tourists looking for more original forms of entertainment are recommended to visit Elbl g Flying Club’s airport (skydiving possible), a diving club or a motor-boating club. The city also offers attractions for devoted but passive sports fans. They can go for a football, volleyball or basketball league match. The city also organizes Grand Prix Cup tournaments in badminton, orienteering races, table tennis, chess and checkers as well as the "Baltic Cup" International Dancing Festival. photo : Bartosz Rybaczewski In the fourteenth century Elbl g became an important harbour; the city was a member of the Hanseatic League and its inhabitants were wealthy, as evidenced by archaeological research conducted in the Old Town. Excavations are also a proof of the existence of trade relations between former Elbl g residents and Germany, Scandinavia, Italy, England and the Netherlands. Since the fifteenth century, the city relations with the Polish Kingdom became closer. After the Battle of Grunwald in 1410, Elbl g citizens paid homage to king W#adys#aw Jagie##o and offered him a conquered castle taken away from Teutonic Knights. In 1440 they joined the Prussian Union, an organisation uniting the cities reluctant towards the Teutonic Order. Elbl g joined the Crown only after the Second Peace of Thorn in 1466. Unfortunately, the period of Elbl g’s belonging to the Republic was a time of wars, plagues and plunder. After the First Partition of Poland in 1772, Elbl g was incorporated into the Prussian state. The city’s misfortunes came to an end only in the nineteenth century, with the beginning of the Elbl g Canal construction, followed by building railway network. Several important monuments had not been destroyed during the war. Visitors interested in history should certainly explore a few most important of them. MONUMENTS OF SACRED ARCHITECTURE photo : Joanna Pruszy!ska The Cathedral of the Elbl g Diocese, with its steep tower of 97 metres, became an Evangelical church after 1525 but returned under the Catholic Church management after 1945. Its origins go back to mid thirteenth century. The building was destroyed several times (fire was one of the reasons) and then rebuilt over again. Today you can admire its version from the year 1965, with some recent renovations (from 2009 to 2010). Inside the majestic Cathedral there is a fourteenth-century Gothic baptistry, the Apostles’ figures, St. Nicholas sculpture and late Gothic altars. photo : Joanna Pruszy!ska St. Nicholas Cathedral in Elbl g 17 1 2 Centres of the Land of Elbl g Canal photo : Joanna Pruszy!ska St. Adalbert Church in Elbl g The first Catholic church located on the outskirts of the city in the district incorporated into Elbl g during the interwar period. The construction of the church (1901–2002) was financed by Catholics from the Warmia region. The temple represents neo-Gothic style and there are three altars inside. photo : Joanna Pruszy!ska Corpus Christi Church in Elbl g A beautiful fifteenth-century church named so in the honour of the Blessed Sacrament. It replaced a chapel which had burnt in the fire. The church used to be a seat of “Pegaz” Community Centre in the years 1976–1982. In 1981, the building regained its proper function, and today the Diocesan Priesthood Center and the Center for Christian Culture have their seats there. photo : Joanna Pruszy!ska St. Anthony Church in Elbl g A single-nave, medieval church in the district of Elbl g, now belonging to a group of daughter churches of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish in $"cz. During its restoration in the early 20th century, it regained its antient paintings and had its tower rebuilt. The oldest element of the church is the fourteenth-century stoup. Another interesting object is the late-Gothic and Baroque epitaph of Col. Wangenheim. People are summoned to masses by a sixteenth-century bell. photo : Joanna Pruszy!ska The Blessed Dorothy of M towy Church in Elbl g One of the most precious Baroque monuments in the Lowlands region. A unique and extremely beautiful church with a panel-wall façade, built in Kaczynos near Elbl g between 1705–1959. In the 80’s of the twentieth century it was transferred to Elbl g and consecrated. Next to the temple there is one of the few mansions of the Lowlands region, dating back to the eighteenth century. MONUMENTS OF SECULAR ARCHITECTURE photo : Joanna Pruszy!ska Targowa Gate in Elbl g 18 The residue of the ancient city walls, now within the area of the Old Town. The Gate has been overlooking Elbl g for 700 years. In the year 2000 it was rquipped with a clock. The legend connected with the Gate has it that a young baker saved the city from theTeutonic Knights’ invasion by cuting the rope which was holding city gate doors open. Centres of the Land of Elbl g Canal Built in the early nineteenth century in the green forest park of the Elbl g Ba%antarnia, it was originally meant to be a luxurious inn. Several decades later, the Elbl g City Council bought it and made recreation area available for the city dwelles. Both in the past and today the park surroundinng the Palace offers Elbl g citizens peace and relaxation close to nature. The former Palace is now the seat of the Elbl g Forest Inspectorate. photo : Joanna Pruszy!ska August Abbeg’s Palace in Elbl g ARCHAEOLOGICAL MONUMENTS Truso settlement photo : Joanna Pruszy!ska A Baltic port and trading town near Vistula River estuary, visited and described in the ninth century by an Anglo-Saxon explorer – Wulfstan. The remains of the settlement were discovered in 1982 and excavation works lasted for 10 years. Truso had a very convenient location – it was situated by the sea, in an area bordering over Slavic and Prussian lands. In addition to a habour district, it also had a craft and merchant districts, where exchanging and selling goods flourished. The settlement occupied 10 hectares of land, so its size was comparable to such medieval trade centers as Hedeby, Birka and Wolin. It constituted the most important long-distance trade center on the Prussian lands. Truso buildings and the objects found during excavations (such as goldsmith hammers, anvils, styles, fragments of melting pots and moulds as well as semi-finished products, defective products and prodution waste material) indicate that the settlement was inhabited mostly by the local population of the West Prussia and the Scandinavians but the Slavs and possibly Frisians lived there as well. Truso residents built their houses (usually consisting of three rooms) of wood and plaited tree branches, supplemented by clay. The settlement functioned since the end of the 8th century till the beginning of the 10th century, when its trading function declined due to fires and wars. With time, Truso’s functions were taken over by Gda!sk, founded in the 2nd half of the 10th century. The model of the Truso village, a replica of the Truso hut and some archaeological findings are part of the exhibition at the Museum of Archaeology and History in Elbl g. ... culturally Being in Elbl g, you can participate in a whole range of events organized by the city authorities and other institutions, such as, e.g. Paschalia Elbingensia – the Elbl g Easter, the Elbl g Junket, Art Fair, the Elbl g Bread Day, Days of Elbl g, International Dance Festival BALTIC CUP, Elbl g Rocks Europe – a festival of alternative music.
