Jim Henry, Music Ph. D., twice International Champion bass , and Director of
Past International Champs, Ambassadors of Harmony, wrote an article concerning
the musical roots of barbershop harmony. It was part of Dr. Henry’s doctoral dissertation, “The Origins of Barbershop Harmony.”
Henry quoted non-Barbershopper, Lynn Abbott’s Fall 1992 American Music article, “Play ‘That Barber Shop Chord’: A Case for the African -American Origin of Barbershop Harmony,” which used quotes from musicians like Jelly Roll Morton, Louis
Armstrong, W.C. Handy, and an early 20th Century commentator who called himself
“Tom the Tattler.” Abbott referred to the African-American quartet on the cover of
Irving Berlin’s 1912 composition, “When Johnson’s Quartet Harmonize,” as well as
Geoffrey O’Hara’s transcription of what he had heard sung by early African American barbershop quartets. O’Hara’s work resulted in the publication of “The
Old Songs,” our Society’s theme which he used to proceed “Massa’s in de Cold, Cold
Ground.”
Abbott’s found that the earliest white recordings were full of minstrel show
conventions which included Negro dialect and other parodies of the African American culture, indicating a strong association with the music style.
Many have thought the song, “Play That Barber Shop Chord,” which has been
performed by many recent Society quartets, as the earliest reference to the term
“barbershop.” It tells of a black piano player, “Mr. Jefferson Lord,” who was given the
plea by “a kinky –haired lady they called Chocolate Sadie.” It’s an obvious connection of barbershop harmony with the African-American culture.
ED. NOTE: Most of this column is a simple restating of Jim Henry’s fine article…and, there’s more to come.
