Lindsay Hospital Foundation KOCO Day Held In Lindsay-Appoints Two New Members
& Where!
The Lindsay Municipal
Swimming Pool hours are
Tuesday through Saturday, 1 p.m.
to 7 p.m. and Sunday, 1:30p.m.
to 5:30 p.m. It will be closed on
Monday. Prices are $2 for 16 and
over and $1.50 for 15 and under.
Season passes will be available.
Rates for passes will $35 for one
child, $50 for two children, and
$75 for family pass (immediate
family only). The pool will also
be available for rent after hours. A
two hour party will be $65. Water
aerobics will again be offered on
Tuesdays and Thursdays from
7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Each session
will cost $2. A new offering this
summer will be scuba lessons
taught by Dr. Stephen Hale. If
interested contact the pool. The
first session of swim lessons will
start June 9 through June 20, June
23-July 3, and July 7-July 18.
Children must be 5 years of age
in order to enroll for lessons. A
class for 3 and 4 year olds will be
July 21-25. For more information

H.O.P.E. (Healing Our
Personal Emotions) support
group is being offered by Valley
Hospice and Pauls Valley General
Hospital for the community that
is dealing with loss. This program
is offered to help individuals
recognize their loss, learn how to
cope, and learn how to live again.
This is a program designed for
anyone who is suffering a loss.
The meetings will be Mondays
from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at
the Pauls Valley General Hospital
in the Loftin Conference Room.

The Lindsay Hospital
Foundation recently appointed
two new board members, Pat
Mashburn and Danny Seibel.
Mrs. Mashburn represents the
Hospital Board and Mr. Seibel
replaces long time member,
Kohen Tabor.
Officers are: Claudean
Harrison, president; Leona Price,
secretary; and Terry Thomas,
treasurer. Other members of the
Foundation Board are Dr. Mike
Boeckman, Kris Cummins,
Mark Hall, Steve Hall, and
Bobbye Treadwell.
Danny Seibel
The Foundation is accepting
contributions that will fund
medical equipment for the hospital
and emergency medical service
and ambulances. Lindsay citizens
and surrounding communities are
able to utilize these much needed
services. An x-ray processor and
bi-pap machine for respiratory
needs were recent purchases for
the hospital.

Susan Paddack Named
Legislator Of The Year
The Oklahoma Academy
of Family Physicians (OAFP)
has named Senator Susan
Paddack as this year ’s
Legislator of the Year. Paddack was chosen by the
OAFP Board of Directors
for her strong voice for good
medicine, her tireless efforts at
the Capitol and her continued
outstanding commitment to
the betterment of the health of
the people of Oklahoma.
“Promoting excellence
and wider access to health
care are basic to our overall

Foster Grandparent Volunteers Recognized
The Area III Foster
Grandparent Program held its
annual recognition reception June
27, 2008 at the Senior Citizens
Community Building in Paoli.
Foster Grandparent
volunteers from 10 counties were
honored for their participation
in the program and recognized
for the many hours of service
they provide to children in their
respective communities.

were in attendance and spoke to
the group thanking them for their
hours of service and assisting with
the presentation of certificates to

impetus for violence when
one of our Bradley boys took
umbrage at being hit in a gourd
fight. As I told my grandson,
Walker, about my memories of
Johnny Gourds, I held one in
my hand and threw it at a fence
post. The old velocity was not
there, and, besides, I missed.
As we drove through the
gate at the ranch, there was a
small patch of sunflowers in the
corner of the corral. I thought
about how many sunflowers
there were around Bradley.
The bar ditches were filled with
tall sunflowers. Creek banks
blossomed with sunflowers.
Now it seems that there are
fewer sunflowers. Perhaps
weed killers have been partly
responsible for their decline.
But I recall dusty roads, hot
days, sunflowers growing close
to the road, and far away days
of my boyhood.
As I work in my yard each
week, I appreciate the absence
of weeds. But I also miss the
naturalness of the weeds I
remember from my boyhood.
The weeds grew in profusion.
We did not see them as unsightly.
They were a part of our world.

a program on planting and
gardening in summer heat. A
misconception about planting
is that you should never plant
in summer. Basically this only
applies to transplanting. If you try
to move a plant in summer heat
the shock can be fatal. Only plant
in a partly shady location and on
a cloudy day or early evening
and always water thoroughly. It
only takes a little extra time and
a few simple techniques to keep
summer planting alive.
The meeting was adjourned

winner of the door prize.
Avery Competes In Pageant
Ashley Avery, 16 year
old daughter, of Richard and
Terry Avery of Lindsay, was
named Scholastic Record
Award Winner at the Miss
Teen Oklahoma Scholarship
and Recognition Pageant,
which was held July 18-20, at
the University of Oklahoma in
Norman. Twenty-three select
teenaged girls from across the
state participated in the event
which culminated with the
naming of the new Miss Teen
of Oklahoma State Titleholder,
Kim Tuttle, of Guymon, OK.

Oklahoma Program is not a
beauty pageant. Rather, each
candidate is scored in five areas
of competition: Scholastic
Record, Achievement and
Service to School and
C o m m u n i t y, P e r s o n a l
Development of Talents and
Skills, Personality Projection
in Formal Wear, and Judge’s
Interview. The young woman
selected as Miss Teen of
Oklahoma receives a $1,000
cash scholarship, and a $1,000
educational bond. She will
also have the opportunity to
compete for the National Title
of Miss Teen of America and
vie for scholarships, awards,
and prizes valued at $20,000.
Special guest at the event
was Miss Teen of Oklahoma
2007/2008, Samantha Ali of
Fairview. National Director,
Patrick Liestman, stated,
“Samantha Ali has done an
excellent job representing all
of the accomplished young
women of Oklahoma. She
will be an excellent mentor
for Miss Teen of Oklahoma
2008 as well as all of the 2008
candidates.

The Friendship Club met in
the home of Fannie Stansbury for
their July meeting. The meeting
was called to order by President
Joy Everett. Emma Cantrell led
the song “You Are My Sunshine”
and Helen Cox led the Creed.
The flag salute was led by Betty
White.
Roll call was answered by

A devotional was given by
Betty White taken from the
magazine “Turning Point”,
on “Keeping Score” by David
Jeremiah.
The human race has the
scorekeeping disease, especially
numbers that have to do with
progress, and self esteem, such
as school grades. I.Q. scores,
athletic contests, credit scores,
income levels, stocks, and other
possessions.
We keep score for a lot of
good reasons, but some are bad.
When Jesus began to preach
the values of the kingdom of
God, scorekeeping wasn’t one of
them. In fact, there was a problem
with scorekeeping. People were
keeping score on things that

Tall Tales

Roger Kahn, in his novel, The
Boys of Summer, tells of the last
nostalgic days of the Brooklyn
Dodgers in the 1950’s before they
moved out west.
The title of the novel reminds
me of another group of people
I’ve been blessed to able to work
with over the past several years.
Believe it or not, it really is
about the busiest time of year for
us in the central office. Our fiscal year ends June 30, so during
the month of June we are busily
trying to close out one fiscal year,
while getting ready for another
one. We at Lindsay Schools are
blessed to have a group of ladies
who rarely get any credit, but who
are the solid rocks upon which
this house is built.
Fortunately, we have Theresa Bevers and Serina Zurline,
two ladies who know how to get
things done. When I mess up,
they gently lead me back in the
right direction before I get in too
much trouble. They blow my
mind with their efficiency. Not
only are they extremely competent, but they know how to get
along with people.
Melanie Newby is the smiling, cheerful face you will see
first when you walk into the
central office during the school
year. Although she doesn’t work
for part of the summer, she gets
right down to business on August
1, and “Marquee Mel”, or “Lola
Hall, the Weathergirl,” as she is
otherwise known, blends in nicely
with Serina and Theresa.
But what about the principals?
They surely don’t do anything in
the summer, do they? After all,
there is no discipline to be meted
out, no assemblies to oversee, no
teachers to evaluate, no bus or
parking problems to monitor!
Before you take them out to
the edge of town and hang them
from the highest tree, please realize that yes, indeed, they do show
up for work in the summertime.
Scheduling for next year’s classes, reviewing applications for
employment, working to improve
the facilities, interviewing, helping supervise the summer work
crews, evaluating test scores and
working to improve overall student achievement, are just a few
of their daily chores. But, alas,
just as the thankful superintendent, they would be hard-pressed
to be successful without the ladies who man their offices.
Take Lori Holcomb, for example. Let’s face it, Tom Inman
is a great guy, and a hard worker.
But where would Tom be without
Lori looking out for him? She’s
always there, through thick and
thin, making sure Tom knows
where he’s supposed to be, (even
though he may be somewhere else
at the time.) With his natural instinct to be where the students are,
she occasionally has to reel him
back to the office to sign some
paperwork. You may remember
Radar in “Mash.” He was tutored
by Lori.
Then there’s Debi Mottinger
at the middle school. Bob Ashley
has been around a long time, and
has been a faithful and dependable
employee. Like the true veteran
educator he is, he will be the first

be in a heap of trouble. She is a
model of efficiency, sitting right
in the middle of the mix, working
on the computer, while stretching
out to answer the phone with her
free hand. (Ever hear of Rosemary Wood?)
Travel over to the elementary
school, where Toni Sanders, the
newest member of the secretarial
staff, does a wonderful job, quietly going through her to-do list.
We’re thankful that Toni has the
ever-reliable,
always-dependable Cindy Lee to help during
the school year, because there is
not only Dan Chapman to keep
straight, but part-time assistant
principal Rick Smith as well.
There are many components
that have to come together to make
a great school. I have nothing but
respect and admiration for our
principals, custodians, and transportation guys who work so hard
in the summer getting ready for a
new school year. But quite possibly the most easily overlooked
group of ladies who help hold this
place together are unmistakably
“The Girls of Summer.” Thank
you ladies, for all you do.

Children from households whose income is at or below
the levels shown are eligible for free or reduced-price meals.
Application forms are being sent to all homes with a letter to
parents or guardians. To apply for free or reduced-price meals
households should fill out the application and return it to the
school. Additional copies are available at the principal’s office
in each school. The information provided on the application is
confidential and will be used for the purpose of determining
eligibility and may be verified at any time during the school
year by school or other program officials. Applications may
be submitted at any time during the year. For SFA officials
to determine eligibility, h ouseholds receiving food stamps,
Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF), or Food
Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR) must list
a food stamp, TANF, or FDPIR case number, and the signature
of an adult household member. IF YOU DO NOT LIST A
FOOD STAMP, TANK, OR FDPIR CASE NUMBER, then
the applicaton must have the children’s names, total household
members, the amount of income each member received last
month, the signature of an adult household member, and that
adult’s social security number or the mark the box if he or she
does not have on. In certain cases, foster children are eligible for
free or reduced-price meals or free milk regardless of the child’s
income. If you have foster children living with you and wish to
apply for such meals or milk for them, please contact us.
Under the provisions of the policy, the Food Service Director
will review applications and determine eligiblity.
Parents or guardians wihsing to make a formal appeal
may make a request either orally or in writing to: Mr. Doyle
Greteman, Superintendent of Schools, 800 W. Creek, Lindsay,
OK 73052 for a hearing to appeal the decision. The school’s
policy statement contains an outline of the hearing procedure.
DIRECT CERTIFICATION SFAS ONLY The houshold of a
child currently certified to receive food stamp, TANF, or FDPIR
benefits will be notified of the child’s eligibility and that the child
will be provvided free beneftis unless the household notifies the
SFA that it chooses to decline benefits. If food stamp, TANF,
and FDPIR households are not notified by of their eligibility,
they will need to submit an application.
In accordance with federal law and United States Department
of Agriculutre (USDA) policy, this institution is prohibited from
discriminating on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex,
age, or disability.

Harry Bennett Bland
1922-2008
OK and many other family and
friends.
Preceding him in death were
his father, M.E. Bland, in July,
1962; his mother, Alice Bland in
October, 1974; a brother, Dale
Bland in March, 1984 and a sister,
Marie Freeman in May, 1983. Funeral services for Harry
Bland were Monday, July 28,
2008 at 2 p.m. at the Sharon
Baptist Church officiated by
Reverend Denver McGuire and
Reverend Kris Ramber. Burial
will follow at Odessa Cemetery
under the direction of People’s
Co-operative Funeral Home.

Homer is preceded in
death by his parents, Samuel
and Elsie Mckenzie, and his
brothers Malcomb and Samuel
Jr. Mckenzie.
Funeral services were held at
11 am, Saturday, July 19, 2008,
at Matthews Funeral Home in

May 21, 1922 in Cumberland,
Homer L. McKenzie, 88,
OK to Alice Adron Heffington
Bland and Marvin (M.E.) Bland died July 16, 2008 at his home
and passed away Thursday, July in Edmond, OK. He was born
24, 2008 at Elkview General July 9, 1920 in Lindsay, OK to
Hospital in Hobart, OK at the Samuel and Elsie McKenzie,
age of 86 years, two months and where he lived until graduating
high school.

his pet Bluejay and his dogs, Brit Homer was an avid golfer and
remained active in the oil and gas
and Scooter.
Mr. Bland was in the U.S. business until his death.
Homer is survived by his

James (Jim) Newberry aka
Shawn Barreye, 65, passed away
July 26, 2008 at an Oklahoma
City hospital after a short illness.
He was born October 2, 1942
at Paoli, OK to Hazel Roberts.
He was raised in the Hughes
community by his grandparents,
I.C. and Ophelia Newberry.
Shawn is survived by his
loving Aunt Jawanna Newberry
Arnold of Lindsay, OK; two
brothers, Sammy McCurley and
wife Bonnie of Norman, OK, and
Hugh McCurley of California;
and four sisters, Shirley and
husband Tommy Staggs, Linda
and husband Stan Wells, Margaret
and husband Bobby Lane, and
Marion Wallace all of Edmond,
OK.
He is also survived by the
children and grandchildren of his
siblings.
Shawn’s other survivors
include his cousins and their
families: Bob Arnold of Post,
TX; Betty Auld of Rush Springs,
OK; Ophelia O’Neal of Pauls
Valley, OK; Julie Roebuck of
Shawnee, OK; Willis Newberry
of San Antonio, TX; Johnny Ray
Newberry of San Antonio, TX;
and Teresa Moore of Kingsland,
TX. Shawn also leaves behind
a host of other relatives and
friends.
Shawn was preceded in death
by: his mother, Hazel Roberts,
his grandparents, I.C. and
Ophelia Newberry uncles, John
Newberry, Aaron Newberry, and
Harry Newberry; and aunt Violet
Binyon, niece, Angela Lane, and
cousins, Ira Belle Atchley, and
Lola Lee Weatherford.
Shawn’s biggest passion in
lif was horses. He will be missed

Butch was born in Lindsay, OK
February 25, 1952 to Sidney
Wilson Morgan and Cora (Lee)
Morgan. Butch married Carolyn
Pledger in Lindsay, OK.
Butch lived in Lindsay all
of his life and was a graduate of
Lindsay High School. He worked
in the oil industry as a roustabout.
Butch loved motorcycles,
traveling and spending time
with family and friends, and he
attended Fellowship Of Living
Faith in Lindsay.
