May 2010:Layout 1 6/9/10 11:00 AM Page 1 The summer season brings warmer weather and more relaxed family schedules. This time of year inevitably leads to more passengers riding on the open road with professional drivers. On any road trip, a passenger can make the ride more enjoyable, however, Tango has some guidelines that must be followed for safety reasons. Important Notes: ✐Passengers are limited to a driver’s spouse or signifi- cant other that is at least 18 years or older and they cannot possess a CDL-A. ✐Due to prenatal concerns, a passenger authorization will not be issued if the passenger is beyond her third month of pregnancy. ✐A passenger is to remain in designated areas and must avoid loading/unloading areas. ✐No passenger is approved to perform job related duties (operating vehicle, loading, maintenance) of a driver or crewmember. If you answer yes to these questions, a passenger may be eligible to ride with you. Have you been Tango Transport certified driver in continuous service for at least 30 days? ✔ Have you avoided being involved in a preventable DOT accident during the previous 12 months? ✔ Are you free of convictions of a serious moving traffic violation during the previous 12 months? ✔ Are you free of out of service roadside inspections for Driver’s Hours of Service violations? ✔ Are your logs up-to-date? ✔ What must be provided to Tango IN ADVANCE before a rider is approved: Release Form: Both the driver and passenger must sign a release that holds Tango Transport and affiliates harmless for any injuries, deaths or losses arising out of participation in the passenger program. Call Nancy Wilson at 1-800-368-0599 x 6623 to get the form. (continued on page 3) May 2010:Layout 1 6/9/10 11:00 AM Page 2 a message from the Gormans It’s hard to believe that the official start of summer isn’t until June 21st with the temperatures topping the high nineties throughout May and June. With the coming of the vacation season, we should be mindful about the increased risks that our drivers face every day on the road. A driver’s life is not always easy. They have to manage their loads, strict deadlines, the stress of traffic and road construction -- all the while managing their home life and family while out on the road. It takes a special person to be able to juggle all of these responsibilities with a positive attitude, but amazingly we have a vast majority of those at Tango. We would like to extend our personal gratitude to those drivers and their families for going above and beyond to make our customers happy. You really make a difference. We have been awarded a large amount of new business from both existing and new customers. This is not only a testament to the new sales team, but also to the people in the offices, shops, warehouses, on the road and at home. We are looking to you for input on how we are doing. We will soon launch a Tango Transport Facebook page where we can all share ideas, thoughts and the blessings in our lives. As always, we thank the Lord for His continued blessings, our team members for their loyalty and our customers for their trust. Robert E. The premium of $24.00 a month (subject to change) for this coverage will be billed to the applicable tractor via paycheck deduction. Driver’s License: A copy of the passenger’s drivers license must be provided. This is simplified summary. Please refer to the Driver Manual for more details. If these guidelines are not followed, passenger privileges could be revoked or a driver could face termination.■ Tango Topics took a few minutes to talk to the newest member of the sales team – Vice President of National Accounts Barry Shumate. Tips on being a good passenger Be additional eyes and ears when the driver is pulling out onto a highway or making a turn. Turn your head and lean back out of the way if the driver’s trying to see past you. Don’t backseat drive, even if you’re in the front seat. Some passengers point every little mistake out, and it adds to the driver’s stress level instead of easing it. Lower your voice. Yelling, gasping or exclaiming is a huge distraction that pulls the driver away from concentrating. 1985, so have spent 25 years in some form of Transportation. About 17 of those years have been in the Truck Load and Logistics arena working with M.S. Carriers until being acquired by Swift Transportation. TT: What led you to join the Tango Transport team? Barry: I have seen many ups and downs in the economy over the years, but have never seen an economy as difficult as we have experienced through 2009. Everyone at Tango should be very confident and excited that our leadership guided the company through one of the worst recessions in recent history. Some TT: How did you come to work in the Transportation Industry? Barry: I attended Auburn University, and after graduating, have been involved in Transportation and Logistics ever since. Barry: I believe that we are positioned to experience rapid growth over the next few years, and am confident that we are going to become known in the industry as the premier service carrier. My goal is to help Tango successfully meet all of the goals that we set, and to continue to build a company that will be known for our commitment to Safety, Service, Sustainability, our Customers and our Team Members.
