Physical Therapy, often abbreviated as PT, is a type of treatment you may need when when health problems make it hard to move about or for different body systems to work properly. PT can help you move better, relieve pain, improve balance as well as restore your physical function and fitness level. The goal of PT is to help you progress towards a better quality of life. What does a physical therapist do? Your physical therapist will examine you and make an individualized treatment plan. Depending on your health problem, he or she will help you with flexibility, strength, endurance, coordination, and/or balance. What should you look for in a therapist? You'll want a therapist who has experience with your specific and personal health problems. Some therapists are board-certified in areas such as orthopaedics, geriatrics, and neurology, and may offer even more specialized care. Occupational Therapy What is Occupational Therapy? Occupational Therapy, often abbreviated as OT, is a treatment of any physical or mental problem that interferes with your ability to perform daily living activities. OT gives you the "skills for the job of living" necessary for an independent and satisfying life. The primary goal of OT is to enable you to work with or around your limitations either alone, with limited help, or with the use of devices. What does an occupational therapist do? Your occupational therapist will complete a comprehensive evaluation of the following: range of motion, strength, sensation, coordination, skin and/or wound condition, pain, swelling and functional postures and body mechanics. He or she will design a treatment plan to fit your personal needs. Treatment will also include education about the cause and anatomy of your injury and often a home program to maintain your progress. Speech Therapy What is Speech Therapy? A speech therapist (speech-language pathologist) assesses, diagnoses and provides therapeutic interventions for individuals experiencing speech, language, cognitive, communication, voice or swallowing difficulties. The goal is to help you communicate more effectively and ensure safe eating and drinking. What does a speech therapist do? Speech therapists seek to reduce the effects of communication and/or swallowing difficulties. They will create an individualized treatment plan to help you meet your goals.
