Time to Achieve
Campaign for UTC
brings success for
Chattanooga’s
University in UT’s
Campaign for
Tennessee
With two years remaining in UTC’s Time to Achieve Campaign,
more than $57 million has been given by friends, businesses, and alumni
supporters of Chattanooga’s university. Campaign Chair Brenda Lawson
and the team of Ruth Holmberg, Scott L. Probasco, Lewis Card, Jr., and
Robert F. (Fred) Decosimo continue to lead efforts to meet and exceed the
$65 million goal. While several priority goals have been achieved, including
growth of scholarship endowments and planned gifts, notable and visionary
goals across the campus remain to be addressed:
• Undergraduate scholarships
• Graduate assistantships
• Faculty professorships and chairs to recognize
exceptional research and teaching and to build
disciplinary expertise
• Endowments for visiting writers, artists, and
teaching scholars
• Founding of the Honors College to augment the
Brock Scholars and University Honors Program
and to attract additional exceptional students
• Support for international study
• Laboratories and equipment upgrades
• Library collections to support specific disciplines
• Refurbishing of the Patten Chapel organ
• Establishment of a professional development and
placement center for the College of Business
• New technology and modern equipment for the
School of Nursing
• Additional clinical faculty to allow for larger
nursing classes
• Graduate assistantship support for Athletic Training
to maintain a nationally competitive program
• Collaborative creation of a new literacy center
through which Teacher Preparation Academy
students can support community literacy needs
while fine-tuning their teaching skills
• Support for mentorship of new teachers or teachers
with alternative certifications
• Completion support for the Player Development
Complex to provide dedicated facilities for women’s
and men’s golf
• Endowments for permanent support of coaching
positions
• Life skills center to address leadership, personal and
professional skills development for student-athletes.
• Endowed athletic scholarships
• Development of a Center for Engineering, Materials,
and Manufacturing
• Funding support for national student competitions
in engineering
• Applied research laboratories
• And much more…
For information on the campaign or making a personal
commitment, contact the UTC Office of Development
at 423-425-4232, or by mail at 615 McCallie Avenue,
Dept. 6806, Chattanooga, TN 37403.

UTC enrollment reached a major milestone
this fall with 10,526 students—more than a 7
percent increase over fall 2008.
This growth continues a five-year trend of record enrollment for the campus. Freshman enrollment—at
2,209—reached a record number, as did Graduate
School enrollment.
“We are thrilled that more and more students and their
families are making UTC their choice for higher education,” said UTC Chancellor Roger Brown.
Data collected from ACT indicate that more students
are selecting UTC as a top choice institution. This
fall’s freshman class also represents the best prepared
group of new UTC students, with an average high
school grade point average of 3.26 and an average
ACT score of 22.7.
4
Specific programs looking strong continue to be many
of the pre-professional programs along with science
programs: engineering, business, education, healthcare, graphic design, communication, biology, chemistry, and environmental science. ROTC numbers are
surpassing projections for enrollment—increasing 200
percent in the past two years.
Efforts to improve retention of students appear to be
bearing fruit this semester as well. Freshman retention
rate jumped to 66 percent this fall, up from 60 percent
in fall 2008. This marks the highest retention rate realized in five years. Additionally, the UTC six-year
graduation rate rose three points to 42 percent.
In fall 2009, there were 145 students participating in
the Regional Tuition Rate program, available for undergraduate students with more than 60 hours of
credit in the Georgia counties of Catoosa, Dade, Fan-
“We are thrilled that
more and more students
and their families are
making UTC their
choice for higher
education,” said UTC
Chancellor Roger Brown.
nin, Murray, Walker, and Whitfield, and Jackson
County, Alabama.
Graduate students in these same counties in Georgia
and Alabama now qualify for a regional tuition rate
for graduate classes beginning spring semester 2010,
January 6.
Eligible students pay a tuition rate equal to in-house
fees plus 25 percent of out of state tuition. Currently,
these out-of-state students pay $3,004 per three hour
credit course; beginning spring semester 2010, that
same three hour credit course will cost $1,591.
“Thanks to a decision by the UT Board of
Trustees, we can serve a large population
in North Georgia and Jackson County,
Alabama, that did not have access to affordable, advanced degrees,” said UTC
Provost Philip Oldham. “This reduced tuition rate
helps our institution to fulfill its metropolitan mission.”
Master’s and doctoral degrees, certificates and specialist programs are included in the regional tuition rate.
Once again, UTC was ranked in the top tier of the
Top Public Master’s Universities in the South in the
U.S. News & World Report 2010 America’s Best Colleges, placing it in the top tier of Southern universities.
Early projections for fall 2010 indicate UTC’s growth
trend continuing. “UTC has become the fastest
growing public university in Tennessee,” said
Brown. “And it’s easy to see why. Of course,
this growth brings challenges—we need
housing, and more classroom space. But
these are good challenges to have.”

Challenging minds
Through its “Partners in Education”
program, Volkswagen Group of
America, Chattanooga Operations,
provided $1 million in financial
assistance to establish UTC’s
Volkswagen Competitive Challenge
Fund for students’ team projects and
faculty research, travel, recruitment
and outreach. Funding benefits
engineering, international studies, and computer and
environmental science.
“Our corporate philosophy demands that it is not
enough to merely have an interest in education.
We have an obligation to turn
interest into action;” said Dr.
Horst Neumann, member
of the Board of Management Volkswagen AG
for Human Resources
and Organization. “If
we’re going to create
first-rate minds, we have
to create first-rate
schools.”

Investing in the future
“When the State was forced to cut
funding for all Governor’s Schools several few years ago, the UC Foundation
and other internal funding sources
provided the support needed to continue this program,” said Dr. Valerie
Rutledge, UC Foundation Professor
and head of the Teacher Preparation
Academy. “UTC was the only institution to offer its
program in the face of difficult economic times. Not
only does that demonstrate the commitment of our
institution to this
opportunity, it also
underscores the value
and importance of this
program as it helps
future teachers learn
about college life,
about their future
profession, and about
their own talents.”

A stroke above
Lewis Card Jr is the strongest single
fundraising volunteer for UTC Golf,
spending hours each week building
support for The Player Development
Complex, a joint venture between the
University of Chattanooga Foundation, The First Tee of Chattanooga,
and the City of Chattanooga. The $2 million comprehensive practice facility will benefit men’s and
women’s golf programs at the University. Card’s inspiration: to honor the memory of close friend and
former captain of the UTC golf team, Tommy (T.R.)
McAfee Jr. “I asked Coach Mark Guhne what it
would take to be a national contender and he said
‘We’ve got to have our own practice facility.’ ”

Breaking the cycle
Joni McNeill Murray wants to educate
UTC students about the prevention of
domestic violence and violence
against women. With her vision and
leadership, she is creating an endowment to fund an annual lecture
through the UTC Women’s Center
so that students can learn how to live
in a violence-free world. “As a court
advocate for abused
women, I have met
college-aged victims of
domestic violence. Young
men must also hear the
message, as there is a
significant number of men
who are victims of domestic abuse. All victims need
to learn how to protect
themselves; no one can do
it for them.”

Global opportunities
When an international delegation of engineers
wanted to study road construction and paving
techniques, they reached out to Dr. Ignatius
Fomunung, Associate Professor of Civil Engineering,
who organized a meeting with UTC experts,
government representatives and industry officials.
Fomunung, whose research has received UC
Foundation support, explained, “By becoming aware
of our resources and the strong interaction between
the University and local industry and
agencies, I foresee some of the decision makers in this delegation sending
students from their countries to UTC
for further studies, which will promote
further exchange and opportunities for
our students.”

Superior results
“The chemistry and
psychology of the
male and female brain
are different, so I
think it is necessary to
create a trading
school that thinks
and teaches outside
the box so female
students can be just as successful in the world of
finance and business as men are. The finance center
will focus on teaching trading from a right brain perspective, incorporating the best of motional intelligence and IQ, so that all portfolio
managers have the skill set to produce
superior returns.”

Politics of networking
“The best part about working for
Rep. Susan Lynn was that she
allowed me to ask questions, and
she included me in meetings
and in discussions. I was able to
witness the dedication that
Rep. Lynn has for her constituents and to be a part of the
process!” said Matthew Kimsey,
a spring 2009 Tennessee
Legislative intern and recipient
of the Tennessee Lobbyists
Association Scholarship.
According to Dr. Christopher
Horne, UC Foundation Assistant Professor of Political
Science and overseer of the
intern program for UTC, the
legislative internship provides
an invaluable learning experience for students.
“Not only do students earn credit and become more
competitive for law or graduate school, but our
students also learn firsthand about public policy and
political processes. They make valuable contacts and
often get jobs in state politics directly because of
their internship experience.”

Devotion to service
“I am deeply appreciative to the UTC College of
Business for the confidence placed in me when I was
chosen as a Wright Bentley Scholar. I accepted the
award with pride and a sense of humility, for
achievement is often paired with increased responsibility. This honor has increased my desire to devote
myself unswervingly to the
needs of the Chattanooga
community. The guidance
of others has made this
recognition possible and I
hope to spend a lifetime
serving the people that have
assisted me in becoming an
ordinary man living extraordinary circumstances.”

Wow!
Art brings meaning to life, and the John and Diane
Marek Visiting Artists Series offers a unique way for
many to interpret this experience. Now in its fourth
year, the program brings artists from across the nation to Chattanooga for brief but intense interaction
with the campus and community. “When we met
with UTC representatives, they listened to our
vision for the series: an exhibition of art, a public
lecture, and activities in the community and with
the students over four
days each semester. We
bring the artists here and
we ‘wow’ them and they
‘wow’ Chattanooga,”
Diane Marek said.

Solid foundation
LaShunda Hill’s experience in the University
Honors Program (UHON) “empowered me to reach
for the stars as I venture out into the world. I could
not have gotten the many internship and work
opportunities that I had without the academic
foundation from the Honors Program,” Hill said.
Hill was awarded the prestigious Harry S. Truman
Scholarship, a national
achievement. She interned for
the Tennessee Legislature and
for Constituency for Africa,
helping to promote sustainable
development. Hill volunteered

Challenging Connections
“The Mary B. Jackson Graduate Professorship has
been instrumental in validating my move from fulltime clinical practice to academia. Prior to 2007, I
did not have any teaching experience. I had become
far enough removed from intense academic engagement that I was apprehensive about being able to
provide anything more than anecdotal information.
Effectively connecting the clinical experience I had
attained with the science based information that the
student registered nurse anesthetist requires is what
I saw as one of my biggest challenges. This professorship acknowledges that, on some level, I have been
able to meet that challenge.”
