th AMTNYS 65 Annual Fall Conference November 12 -14, 2015 Rochester Riverside Convention Center Rochester Hyatt Regency Hotel Featured Speakers Keynote: Dan Meyer …Worker, Learner, Go-Getter, Writer, Speaker As seen on CNN, Good Morning America, Everyday With Rachel Ray, and over 2,000,000 times on TED Talks, Dan Meyer taught high school math and studied math education at Stanford University. He speaks internationally and works with textbook publishers, helping them move from education's print past to its digital future. He was named one of Tech & Learning's 30 Leaders of the Future and an Apple Distinguished Educator. Dan proposes that today’s math curriculum is teaching students to expect — and excel at — paint-by-numbers classwork, robbing kids of a skill more important than solving problems: formulating them. He shows classroom-tested math exercises that prompt students to stop and think. Dan’s TED Talk can be viewed here: http://www.ted.com/talks/dan_meyer_math_curriculum_makeover Keynote: Beyond Relevance & Real World: Stronger Strategies for Student Engagement Friday, November 13 Math Curriculum Makeover Friday, November 13 (This will be a 2-hour, 15-minute mini-course.) Banquet Address: Margaret (Peg) Smith Peg is a Professor in the School of Education and a Senior Scientist at the Learning Research and Development Center, both at the University of Pittsburgh. Peg has authored or coauthored over 75 books and peer-reviewed articles. Her most recent book, 5 Practices for Orchestrating Productive Mathematical Discussion (coauthored with Mary Kay Stein), has been the bestselling book at NCTM since its release in 2011. She is currently the principle investigator for a project that is creating materials intended to develop teachers’ knowledge related to reasoning and proof and their ability to support students’ engagement in these mathematical practices. Peg is currently a member of the Board of Directors of Teachers Development Group. In 2009, Peg received the award for Excellence in Teaching in Mathematics Teacher Education from the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMTE). In 2010 she received the Susan Loucks-Horsley Award from the National Staff Development Council for her work promoting professional learning in mathematics. She just completed her term as founding editor of the Mathematics Teacher Educator, a journal co-published by NCTM and AMTE. Banquet: Teaching Practices that Support Student Understanding and Learning Mathematics Friday, November 13 (Banquet ticket required.) Orchestrating Productive Discussions in Math Class: Moving Beyond Showing and Telling Saturday, November 14 (This will be a 2-hour, 15-minute mini-course.) NYSED New York State Education Department (NYSED) representatives will present updates on the implementation of the Commons Core Learning Standards for Mathematics (CCLSM). Updates will include module enhancements and guides, 3-8 and Regents Assessment results, Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST), and NYSED plans post-Race to the Top. Because this is the first year of implementation of CC Algebra 2, special attention will be given to this course. The panelists will also respond to your pre-submitted questions as well as questions submitted during the presentation. In attendance from NYSED will be Craig Blowers, CC Algebra 2 Program Coordinator; Mary Cahill, Director of Curriculum and Instruction; and John Svendsen, Mathematics Associate in Instructional Services.
