Joe has been taking notes all morning, spellbound, as the resea rchers led h i m through a laboratory tour, and now he’s peppering them with additional queries. “I’m just another person out there, just full of questions,” he says. Joe shakes his head, marveling at the high-tech toys that make up the lab, a true creative proving ground for cancer-research innovation. “It’s such important work,” he says. “I don’t know anyone who doesn’t have a parent or a friend who doesn’t have cancer. It’s a plague. It’s not a matter of if you’ll get it but when.” Joe’s father died of cancer. What’s so unique about the Geoffrey Beene Cancer Research Center, as Joe learned, is that researchers here are given targeted funding for in itia l-stage, out-of-the-box approaches—ideas that are literally the first of their kind. Such novel approaches are unlikely to receive funding through traditional sources, but Geoffrey Beene researchers can expect funds within a few weeks, once a request is approved. “Everything costs money. You can’t do it for free,” says Dr. Larr y Norton. 2 012 PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT “You need support, and the Geoffrey Beene Foundation lets us do what we do best, which is use science to get rid of cancer.” Lest you think the grant ideas cooked up here are mere medical pipe dreams, consider this: Since 2007, for every dollar of direct support from the Center, grant awardees have re- ceived an additional $1.64 in followup funding on early-stage research, leading to breakthrough insights on all matter of scientific inquiry, from the importance of cellular mutations to the cancer-fighting potential of our immune systems.
