23 We positioned our Radio Shack
Sound Level Meter 10 feet from the
exhaust tips to take our readings. At
idle, we measured 71 dB in quiet mode
and 77 dB open. At approximately 3000
rpm, the quiet mode measured 92
dB. A 1969 Ram Air III GTO with NOS
mufflers measured 77 and 82 decibels,
respectively. Keep in mind that this is a
logarithmic scale: an increase in 10 dB
is double the sound volume. n
