This book traces its rich and interesting development from humble beginnings in Trinidad in the Caribbean in the 1940’s to the present. Today, steel bands are popular throughout the Caribbean, Europe, Asia and the Americas. The Caribbean people played drums long before Columbus and the Spanish arrived. When Africans were brought to the islands to work on plantations, they also brought their knowledge of drums. The plantation owners, however, feared the powerful sound of the drums in the hands of the workers, and banned them. Undeterred, the workers used bamboo to beat out a rhythm when they needed musical entertainment. Eventually, they discovered the versatile sounds they could get from metal objects, including tins. ‘Pounding the pan’ developed and the steel pan with various notes came into being. Includes a CD of Sterling’s Angels (children’s steel band led by Pan Maestro Sterling Betancourt) playing a range of music.
