THE BAREFOOT COACHING GAMEPLAN from servant hearts…sharing hope www.SamaritansFeet.org THE BAREFOOT COACHING GAMEPLAN Honorary Chairman Coach Dale Brown 1 Corinthians 13:13 tells us, “ There are in the end three things that last: faith, hope and love, and the greatest of these is love.” Here is an opportunity to display that love by joining the Barefoot Coaching Council Movement that is doing it’s very best to provide 300 million children in the work who wake up every day without any shoes to wear. Coach Brown with Samaritan’s Feet Founder & President Manny Ohonme Honorary Chairman Coach Homer Drew “What a privilege to be able to help young people around the world. To touch a life is very fulfilling!” Barefoot Coaching Council Chairman Coach Ron Hunter “I could win every game we play, every conference championship and every naKonal championship and it will never equal the look on a child’s face when we wash their feet, give them a pair of socks and put a pair of shoes on their feet. 2013 Barefoot Coach of the Year Coach John Calipari Receiving Barefoot Coach of the Year award at the Legends of the Hardwood Event “I want to have an impact 10 years, 20 years, 30 years from now,” Coach Cal said. “Many of the players I’m going to coach are going to come across fame and fortune. What do you do with it? Do you make your life about yourself and how much you can grab, or do you make your life about everybody else?” Coach Calipari Head Men’s Basketball Coach at University of Kentucky, on working with Samaritan’s Feet in the Bahamas with his team Barefoot Coach Coach Rob Huber of Mount St. Joseph University “I was truly moved by the manner in which these football players from the All-‐HCAC team sat and washed the feet of the children and slipped on a new pair of shoes and socks. They encouraged the youngsters to be posiKve, stay in school, and dream big dreams. I leZ the event knowing the football players, coaches, and Samaritan’s Feet made a difference in the lives of the 170 children served in Indianapolis.” Coach Huber with Manny Ohonme THE BAREFOOT COACHING GAMEPLAN the barefoot coaching WHAT IS movement? Provide a voice for the voice-‐less. These kids need coaches to tell their story of impoverished living condiKons and not being able to meet basic needs…food and clothing. By uKlizing their plaaorms to provide a voice for the 300,000,000 million children who wake every day in their bare feet. Most likely these figures are much higher as the average pair of shoes cost $10.00, and the majority of families in third-‐world naKons live on less than $2.50 per day. Having no shoes is a way of life because the choice simply does not exist; as well, millions of children die as a result of foot-‐borne illnesses because they have no choice. Therefore, coaches, students, execuKves and others can change lives by simply shedding their shoes. Many of these children will never know the comfort of owning a pair of shoes, let alone play sports. By coaching a game in their bare feet, these coaches will forever impact the lives of thousands of children, most of which they will never meet. Create awareness to Samaritan’s Feet. In 2007, we were mainly a North and South Carolina charity. As a result, our organizaKonal challenge was to create naKonal awareness to the global issue of barefoot children. More people heard of us internaKonally, than here in the US. The media outlets have the power of transferring the fan’s experience and passion for sports into a desire to give back to children in need. This iniKaKve would become bigger than the games for the fans to get involved. We needed a naKonal plaaorm to tell our story. We needed a spokesperson who would be willing and courageous enough to help Samaritan's Feet tell our story. Those children needed a voice, one that would be able to persuade people to do something about this global crisis. By sharing the plight of the children, consumers, fans, alumni and others will be compelled to give. www.SamaritansFeet.org THE BAREFOOT COACHING GAMEPLAN WHAT IS the barefoot coaching movement? Raise money and provide shoes to impoverished children, both domes>cally and interna>onally. Engage people to help spread the excitement and the Barefoot for Bare Feet movement through on-‐campus fund raising efforts. Most people aren’t aware of the poverty level in the US and around the world. As a result, we want our ambassadors to be moved to share their stories through their interacKons. Most of these students and alumni will never know what it feels like to play basketball at a high level, but they can have their own “One Shining Moment”. A partnership between Samaritan’s Feet and students will flourish if they are able to help Samaritan’s Feet create fund raising acKviKes on campus, like personalized online fund raising pages, barefoot walks, barefoot dodge ball games, collect money at the door during athleKc events, barefoot graduaKons, etc. Ideally, these fundraising efforts would benefit impoverished children in the university community and/or internaKonally. Then they would have the opportunity to distribute the shoes personally and engage others on campus to join the efforts. By gekng personally involved in a cause bigger than them and acKvaKng their excitement for the game beyond the court, will forever impact their lives. The goal is not to take away the passion for sports, rather enhance it and make it mean more to them because of the difference it made in the lives of others. This will last longer than memories of championships or difficult defeats. Let’s create a buzz in the sport that will forever leave a lasKng footprint in a million children’s lives. Enhance the image of coaches, schools, the NCAA, its member schools and its student athletes. By aligning with sports, we will build on the excitement and deliver thousands of pairs of shoes to impoverished children throughout the world. Our goal is to spread the excitement and extend the avidity of the fan across the ocean to many children who only know despair and poverty. By uKlizing the exciKng, contagious and powerful imagery of sports, many of these families will experience hope at a new level. This hope will be shared through a new pair of shoes and delivered by coaches, athletes, fans and many more. This will enhance the barefoot movement, while creaKng good-‐will ambassadors of coaches, who are oZen maligned in the media. Engage people in a life of service. Provide opportuniKes for coaches and student athletes to experience servant leadership through serving impoverished children at Samaritan’s Feet shoe distribuKons, both domesKcally and internaKonally. This will create long-‐term service minded individuals, which will ulKmately make their community a bener place to live. Through these efforts, coaches, athletes and fans will deliver a powerful message of leadership and servant-‐hood to its communiKes across the country. The university, high school or youth league will be sending a message of its commitment to making a difference in the lives of young people. www.SamaritansFeet.org THE BAREFOOT COACHING GAMEPLAN once joining the barefoot team… WHAT’S MY GAMEPLAN? ANNOUNCEMENT SUGGESTIONS 1 Samaritan’s Feet is a 501©3 organizaKon that was founded in 2003 by Manny Ohonme (pronounced “Oh-‐ho-‐may”) and his wife, Tracie. The headquarters is located in Charlone, NC. Manny is originally from Nigeria and received his first pair of shoes at age 9 from a missionary from Wisconsin named Dave. 2 Manny came to the US to play basketball at the University of ND – Lake Region. He received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees and went on to a successful career in markeKng and logisKcs. His wife, Tracie, is originally from ND. They are the parents of 4 children. 3 Samaritan’s Feet was started as a way to “pay it forward” for that first pair of shoes that Manny received as a young boy. The goal of Samaritan’s Feet is to provide 10 million pairs of shoes for 10 million less fortunate people in 10 years. Samaritan’s Feet has done shoe distribuKons all of the US and in over 60 countries around the world. 4 Over 50 percent of the world’s children will never be able to afford a new pair of shoes. Over 10 million people die each from foot borne illnesses that could be prevented if they had a pair of shoes! ANNOUNCEMENT SUGGESTIONS 5 Barefoot Coaching was started in 2007 when Manny asked Ron Hunter, now the Head Men’s BB Coach at Georgia State, formerly of IUPUI, to coach a game in his bare feet to draw anenKon to the plight of the over 300 million people who go without shoes every day. Now, thousands of coaches at all divisions of college athleKcs and in the high school ranks join forces every year. 6 Coach Hunter set a goal to raise 40,000 pairs of shoes to honor Dr. MarKn Luther King, Jr, on the 40th anniversary of his death. More than 100,000 pairs of shoes were raised within 6 weeks of that game! Isn’t it amazing what can happen when we choose to say “YES!” 7 In 2009, Samaritan’s Feet first partnered with the NCAA and the NaKonal AssociaKon of basketball Coaches (NABC) to by asking coaches from around the country to go barefoot to bring awareness to the cause. 8 Samaritan’s Feet only distributes NEW SHOES. While they will always accept donaKons of new shoes, that make it hard to adjust to supply and demand, thus, it is much more efficient to make a cash donaKon to support a pair of shoes Barefoot Coach Scon Nagy-‐ South Dakota State University Head Men’s Basketball Coach www.SamaritansFeet.org THE BAREFOOT COACHING GAMEPLAN post-season FROM THE COURT TO THE FIELD Georgia Tech University Football Team Coaching Barefoot is a great example of servant leadership for your team and community, while having your team serve at a local shoe distribuEon or travel internaEonally with Samaritan’s Feet can provide unforgenable life lessons for everyone involved.
