A LOOK BACK
TORONTO PAN AM GAMES
Norm Perry, the legendary Galloping Ghost of Canadian
football, is best remembered as the fleet-footed halfback
who led the Sarnia Imperials to a stunning Grey Cup victory.
Born in Sarnia on June 1, 1904, Perry worked for Imperial
Oil all his adult life. He came to national prominence in the
1930’s as the leader of the Imperials football club. Noted for
his blinding speed and smooth catching hands, Perry led the
Imperials to a Grey Cup win over the Regina Roughriders in
1934. He hung up his cleats shortly after that and ran for
city council, winning an aldermanic seat in the 1936 election.
Three years later, at the age of 34, he was acclaimed one of
the youngest mayors in the city’s history. He was as brilliant
with the gavel as he had been with a pigskin, playing an
important role in leading the city out of the Great
Depression. Despite the ruined economy, Mayor Perry pushed ahead with
several projects and had a successful term. Welfare rolls dropped, new home
construction soared to a 10-year high, there was a slight municipal budget
surplus and Christina Street was resurfaced.
Despite his successes, he was defeated when he ran for re-election in 1940. At
the time, there was speculation that voters turned on him because he had
originally said he wouldn’t seek a second term.*
Norm Perry was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1963 and
into the Canada's Sports Hall of Fame in 1975. Here in Sarnia, our own Norm
Perry Park was named in honour of this football legend.

OLDER HOME ENERGY RETROFIT
The first step of an energy retrofit is
getting an energy assessment of your
home. This can serve as a blueprint of
what needs to be addressed to make
your home more comfortable, healthy,
and energy efficient. Energy auditors
may use tools such as infrared
cameras that can reveal energy or
heat loss problems in a home and to
identify air leaks. Depending upon the
size of the house, the present energy
losses and the retrofit option(s)
chosen, retrofit could save you
between 15% and 40% of energy cost.

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT
Since 1993, NeighbourLink has been
helping our neighbours in various
practical ways. NeighbourLink SarniaLambton is a network of Christian
churches and volunteers who assist
our community through education,
advocacy and love in action. We
recognize those living on limited
income and/or with limited support
m a y n e e d so m e n e ig h bo u r l y
assistance from time to time. One of
the ways NeighbourLink helps our
neighbours is with the community’s
assistance. NeighbourLink accept
donations of gently used beds
(mattress/box spring), bedding,
major appliances, basic furniture
items, medical equipment and baby
items all year round. We then GIVE
your gently used donation to
someone in our community who is
currently looking for that item.
Linking donations to families in need
within our own community helps
meet the very real and practical
needs of many of our low income
neighbours.
