Ages Six to Twelve

Location: Lawrence House Centre for the Arts
Please provide your child with a lunch, morning and
afternoon snack. NOTE: NO NUTS PLEASE! Depending
on the weather conditions, there will be a break
outdoors, within the grounds of the Lawrence House,
so it is important that your child dress accordingly. We
recommend that the artists wear older clothing or bring
a cover up. Each week will include a variety of materials
and techniques with fun projects designed to stimulate
your child’s creativity and build confidence in their
artistic abilities.
Storytime Art - Some of our favourite stories and
characters will inspire the artwork for Storytime Art with
classics like Charlotte’s Web, The Velveteen Rabbit and
Winnie the Pooh along with the comical tales of Robert
Munsch and Dr. Seuss.
Date: July 4 to 8
Weird and Wonderful Creatures - The world is full of
amazing animals, birds, insects and plants. This week
we’ll create artwork based on real life creatures that look
like they belong in your imagination

Outside of the Box - Be ready to create “outside the box”
using non-traditional materials and unique methods. Be
ready to expect the unexpected.

Time Travellers - Climb into our time machine as we
“travel” back to cave man time, Ancient Egypt, pirates on
the high seas or fast forward to the future. Each day we’ll
“travel” to a different time period to create our art.

Adventures in Space - Welcome space cadets!
Everything to do with space - astronauts, rockets, space
shuttles, planets or extraterrestrials – will be part of our
art projects.

Colour Crazy - No black & white for this week, only
fabulous colour! We’ll look at how famous artists have
used colour and we’ll experiment colour to paint, draw
and sculpt our own masterpieces.

Dance Camp – Have fun at this action packed three day
camp. Each day will include a craft, snack and dance.
Children will be introduced to a variety of movement
styles and will have the opportunity to explore their own
interpretations of music.

Geocaching 101 - In cooperation with the St. Clair Region
Conservation Authority, the City of Sarnia Parks and
Recreation Dept. presents Geocaching 101. Geocaching
is a real-world treasure hunting game where players try
to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, using GPS
devices. Instructed by Sharon Nethercott, this session
will introduce participants to the game of geocaching
through hands-on activities, and include an informative
PowerPoint presentation.

Art Explosion - In cooperation with Harmony Centre, the
City of Sarnia Parks and Recreation Department presents
Art Explosion! A four-week, two session program, Art
Explosion invites participants to explore a variety of
artistic mediums that are used to discover the intricate
art of dance, music, theatre, painting, drawing and
singing. Each two week session will conclude with an
exciting and explosive show for parents and friends.

We are proud to offer the Red Cross Pre-school and
Swim Kids lessons. The swim lesson program focuses
on swimming, fitness and skill and water safety for

Information
Membership: Members enjoy savings of 15 percent or
more on programs and events! Membership is available
to anyone fifty or over. You do not need to be a member
to participate in programs and events. Anyone twenty or
over can participate in programs and events.

Strangway Centre Café: Open to the public with
reasonable prices! Serving soup, sandwiches, desserts
and daily specials prepared by Centre volunteers.

pm The Hobby Shop is staffed by Strangway Volunteer

Minor Woodworking Repairs: If you are in need of
a minor woodworking repair our volunteers in the
Woodshop can probably fix it! Bring your item in to be
inspected. There is a small fee for this service.
Volunteering:
The Strangway Centre is a great place to volunteer your
time. No matter your skill, or desire to learn a new skill,

Build Your Bones: Exercise works by placing stress on
the bones which results in increased bone mass. This is
especially true for weight bearing and weight training
type exercises. The added benefit is a reduced risk of
heart disease, weight management, an d the prevention

Stretch and Soft Yoga: If you suffer from arthritis, back

yoga, a program that is modified to help people with
injuries and illness. Regular practice of this program can
benefit range of specific conditions while helping you
bring flexibility, fluid movement and relieve the stress
in your whole body. You don’t need any previous yoga
experience, but you must be able to get down onto the
floor. You will need a rubber yoga mat for this class.

Yin Like Yoga: A practice devoted to healing and

Summer Music Series: Canatara
(June to August, 2016)
The Bandshell at Canatara Park has quickly become
a favourite destination for families and friends to
gather nightly and enjoy a variety of community music.
Featuring over thirty nights of entertainment, the
Canatara Opening Night will be Tuesday, June 7, with
Closing Ceremonies taking place on Wednesday, August
24. All shows begin at 7 pm and are free to the public.

place at the Seaway Kiwanis Pavilion. A donation box is

21st Annual KIDS FUNFEST

Since 1996, Kids Funfest has built a reputation as
one of the must-attend events in our community by
delivering fun, FREE and quality educational and
interactive experiences for the whole family. The Parks
and Recreation Department along with the Kids Funfest
Committee is dedicated to the development of fun,
creative and interactive learning opportunities geared
toward children aged one to twelve. Kids Funfest will be
located at the Outdoor Grounds by Clearwater Arena.
Packed with activities, entertainment and interactive
education zones and more, Kids Funfest is the spot
to be! Thanks to the generous support of our funding
partners, friends, sponsors and community volunteers,
admission remains absolutely free.

This one day festival has grown in its diversity each
year. Hobbyfest continues to give local groups and

Running throughout Canatara Park, festivities will
include multi-cultural entertainment, ethnic food
booths, arts and crafts, inflatables, demonstrations, face
painting and train rides.
Beginning at 4 pm, all entertainment and activities
will then move to the Sarnia Waterfront and Bayshore
parking lot at Centennial Park. The Canada Day
Fireworks display will cap off the day’s events starting
at dusk, set off from the Sarnia Point Lands. Various
bands and other entertainment are set to perform
prior to the fireworks. Art/craft, concessions, parade
and band applicants can complete the appropriate
application form available for download at www.sarnia.
ca. All completed forms can be returned to the Parks and
Recreation Office, third Floor, Sarnia City Hall.

Beaches in Sarnia
Canatara Beach
Lifeguards will be on duty to patrol a designated area
of Canatara Beach beginning June 25 to August 28,
2016. They will be available 7 days per week from
11 am to 6 pm.
•Beach Volleyball Courts are available for public use.
Nets and balls can be signed out at the Lifeguard
Shack during regular lifeguard duty hours.
•Accessible Beach Chair. The City has an accessible
beach wheelchair that can be used for beach
participants that would like to roll over the sand to the
water’s edge with ease at Canatara Beach. The beach
chair is available for public use and free of charge
during regular lifeguard duty hours.
The beach wheelchair was made possible through a
donation form the Shannon Ladies Memorial Volleyball
Tournament several years ago.
•Beach Matting. The City has purchased fifty feet of
beach matting that is designed to make beaches
accessible for people who use wheelchairs or walkers
as well as parents with children in strollers. The five
foot wide beach matting will be used at Canatara
Beach this summer and is located at the sidewalk that
extends out to the beach.
•Lifejackets are available free of use and please visit
the lifeguard shack for proper size and sign out during
regular lifeguard duty hours.
•City of Sarnia has once again applied for Blue Flag
Status. Blue Flag is a highly respected eco certification
program that awards beaches that meet international
standards and more. In order to attain Blue Flag award,
our beach will have to meet 27 criteria categories under
the Environment Education and Information, water
quality, beach management, safety and services.
