From the President . . .
H

fellow
LMTs across
the great state
of Iowa. I hope
this newsletter finds each of you
enjoying the beauty of an Iowa
summer. This is the first
newsletter the AMTA Iowa
Chapter has distributed to ALL
Iowa Licensed Massage
Therapists. In 2006, based on
feedback from our members, the
AMTA Iowa Chapter Board voted
to make this investment one time a
year (Fall issue) to reach all Iowa
licensees. It is our hope that
therapists will see what a dynamic
group our chapter is and join the
fun by becoming a member and/or
attending one of our chapter
conventions!
In 1994, after graduation
from massage therapy school, I
was faced with the decision to join
a professional association. Not
knowing what direction to go, I
G
reetings Fellow AMTA
Members.
We will be featuring Meir
(pronounced My-ear) Schneider
as our presenter. He has presented
at many other State’s AMTA
conventions and had great
reviews. I have had the pleasure
of meeting Meir and have read his
joined the AMTA solely based on
the recommendation of my
educators. Boy, I am glad I did! I
have met so many terrific people,
participated in many massage
awareness events to promote our
profession, and I have received
training in incredible massage
techniques. Each Chapter
Convention features national
presenters educating the group on
state-of-the-art massage techniques
and also includes a Chapter Board
meeting sharing the business of the
Chapter. There is just something
magical about sharing a weekend
with over 150 massage therapists.
The AMTA Iowa Chapter
is committed to keeping members
informed regarding the Iowa laws
and rules. Our 2nd VP, Tricia
Neilssen, is in attendance at every
Iowa Board of Massage Therapy
meeting to report to our members
the actions and proposed actions of
the Board. We utilize our website,
www.amtaiowa.org, to
communicate all noteworthy
information to all massage
therapists. Be sure to check the site
out!
I look forward to
September in Davenport when we
can all share another memorable
weekend of fun and education. Our
featured presenter is Meir
Schneider. The feedback I have
received from many therapists who
have attended educational sessions
with Meir is that is it unlike
anything you have ever learned
before and truly inspirational. I
very much look forward to seeing
Meir again, as I was honored to
meet him two years ago at an
AMTA National Convention.
As the Chapter President,
my fondest duty is to be available
and readily accessible to each
member of the Iowa Chapter.
Please do not hesitate to contact
me if I can be of service. I am here
to serve you, the members.
Yours in Health and Happiness,

Legislation Update . . .
H
ello
everybody.
I hope your
summer is going
well. The
following report
comes from The
State Board
meeting of June 5th, 2007. I will start
with the small items, and then go on
to the more important issues.
First off, the Health Freedom
Act has failed once again in the
Legislation this year. This is not the
first time this Act has failed. Please
keep an eye on if it comes up again so
we can keep it from passing.
Iowa is the first State to join
the Federation of State Massage
Therapy Boards. This is the
organization that is trying to get all
the States to join to create a National
Massage test. The result of this test
would be that, no matter where you
might relocate after school, you could
work as an entry level Therapist. The
Federation has not defined what that
means yet, but the implication is that
by taking a test that is not as difficult
as the current state-approved test, they
feel more students will pass and be
able to work as soon as they get the
results of their testing.
There will be a pilot test from
July 24th to Aug 7th. This test will
cost $125.00 and any student can take
it in lieu of the current test. However,
due to this being a pilot test, it could
take up to 3 months to receive your
license. The results must be reviewed
and then the State of Iowa must
approve it. There is NO guarantee the
State will approve this test. However
right now they do not foresee any
reason that it would not be
approved. So, for now this is not an
accepted test for the State of Iowa.
However, if it is approved, the student
can save money by taking this test.
Massage schools will now
need to renew their licenses every 2
years with the State to continue to be
an approved school of massage. Up
until now a school could be approved,
then stop teaching massage, without
the state's knowledge. This new
procedure will help the state keep
track of all the massage schools in the
state.
There are new proposed
changes to 132.1 rules. I’ve listed
below some of the changes they are
proposing, and you will find them on
our website at www.amtaiowa.org.
PLEASE look them over so you are
aware of the proposals:
First, requirements for
instructors -- this change would
eliminate all the requirements for
being an instructor in a massage
therapy school in the State of
Iowa. Currently the law requires
instructors to have professional
training and two years experience in
the coursework they teach. Anatomy
and Physiology instructors currently
must have eight semester hours of
college level course work before they
can teach A&P.
Second, to remove the
curriculum hour requirement for all
areas of the coursework -- with this
change, there would be no minimum
level of education requirements a
student must achieve before entering
into a clinical practicum. In essence,
this would allow a school to have
students enter the clinical practicum
with little to no training. Currently the
law states that students must have
completed 200 hours of coursework
before entering into clinical
practicum. This will also open the
door to online massage therapy
schools for Iowa.
Third, to not allow massage
schools to let students receive money
for massages during clinical -- if you
have attended a school and made
money while in clinical, and the extra
money was something that helped you
greatly, as well as helping you learn
how to run a business, you will
understand why this is something we
would not like to see the State take
away from the student.
From what I understood at
this meeting, the Board feels it is not
their job to regulate massage schools.
This is not a final proposal. We had
until July 24th to write to the Board to
air our feelings on these changes. We
have until the Sept 4th's meeting to
voice it at the meeting. I do
recommend if you have strong
feelings towards this that you come to
that meeting. If you need the location
or directions please contact me.
There are other changes
proposed as well that I have not
mentioned. Again PLEASE read up
on what the changes are going to be
and how they will affect the future of
massage in our STATE.
Thank you for your time and
for allowing me to serve you.

Precision Neuromuscular Therapy Research Symposium 2007
On February 17-18, 2007, NMT MidWest sponsored the first PNMT Research Symposium in Lake Geneva,
WI. Forty therapists from around the country came to listen and learn from each other, sharing ideas
generated from current and past research and
pondering ideas for future research studies.
As an organization, NMT MidWest is
deeply committed to clinical research. In the
opening address, PNMT founder Douglas
Nelson illuminated the early foundations of
the principles of scientific thinking. These
principles of investigation can be
implemented today by therapists, instead of
abdicating research to scientists with PhD’s
and lots of funding. Applying critical thinking
to soft tissue therapy only deepens
understanding of the basic underlying
physiological processes and possible
interventions.
To this end, therapists studying PNMT
collaborated in both observational and
interventional research studies. A few
presentations were case studies, pilot programs to refine the investigation into a viable research endeavor.
Therapists learned how to think critically about soft-tissue work, work and learn collaboratively with
colleagues, and mostly learned that constant questioning of assumptions is a wonderful way to invigorate
your practice.
Some of the research studies presented in the Symposium were:

Frozen Shoulder: A Randomized Clinical Study Using PNMT

Musician Injuries: Correlating Injuries with Instruments

Soft Tissue Intervention in Restricted Neck Rotation: An Ongoing Interventional Study

Migraine Headache: An Interventional Study

TMJ Restriction: Muscular Components

Massage for Anxiety and Depression: Can It Help?

The Relationship of Scapular Position and Neck Pain

Psoas Release and Spinal Compression:

Handedness and Shoulder Problems: Is There a Connection?

Anterior Inclination of the Pelvis: Discerning Muscular Involvement
A couple of the aforementioned studies are still ongoing; numerous other studies are underway. NMT
MidWest is going to consider either an annual conference, one day of which will be devoted to research, or a
biannual two day Research Symposium. That announcement will be made via the www.nmtmidwest.com
website over the next few months.
