Hightlights & ideas for the LGBT punter...
Among the many
delights of the
Edinburgh International
Festival is William
Forsythe’s hilarious, end
of the world spectacular,
Impressing the Czar,
performed by the Royal
Ballet of Flanders at the
Alan
Cumming
Edinburgh Festival
Theatre - see image over
the page for details.
Another highlight is
Euripides’ The Bacchae in a new version
of the piece by David Greig at the King’s
Theatre. This stars Alan Cumming, who
will be familiar to many. Catch it from
11th-18th Aug at 8pm at the King’s
Theatre
Optical Identity is for those who
want a fresh way of looking. This is
music to be seen, not just listened to.
Scottish based Theatre Cryptic and the
T’ang Quartet from Singapore combine
interactive technologies and visuals to
create a sound and vision experience see image over the page for details.
The Simon Bolivar
Orchestra of Venezuela
with their energetic
young conductor,
Gustave Dudamel should
be a stand-out item,
performing
Shostakovitch’s 10th and
Bernstein’s Dances from
West Side Story. 17th
Aug at 8pm at the Usher
Hall.
The famously
bisexual Leonard Bernstein‘s comic
opera “Candide“ is the opening event on
10th Aug at the Usher Hall.
A FREE outdoor display called
Jardins Publics is something to watch
out for - a vivid experience in the city
centre from 10th Aug. You’ll find it!
A production of the first full opera,
Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo, -11th-14th Aug at
the Edinburgh Festival Theatre -is paired
with a modern, multi-media Orpheus by
the American Repertory Company on
25th-29th Aug at the Royal Lyceum
Theatre.

Much of this Scene Edition of ScotsGay
is dedicated to previewing items of
interest at the Edinburgh Festivals.
Within these pages you’ll read
about the Main Festival, the Book
Festival and the Fringe Festival. We
simply don’t have room for the TV
Festival, the Jazz Festival and
everything else that is going on. But we
hope that we’ve picked out some
highlights for you, the L, G, B, or T
punter.
Mind you, Edinburgh in Aug is not
for everybody. You may also want to
turn to John Murphy’s piece on page 12
for an antidote to it all.
Below are some mugshots of us ScotsGay’s team of reviewers. Please be
kind if you catch up with us out and
about! Some of us are charged with
reviewing up to eight shows a day.

know about - tell us! Get in touch with

This piece uses dance to reflect
on dance itself.
The action focuses – with a great
sense of humour – on nothing
less than the history of Western
civilization.

Stephen K Amos - More of Me
at the Pleasance Courtyard
The splendid Mr Amos had the best stand up show on
the Fringe in 2006, which included a wonderful
coming out story to boot. This year he promises to be
even more revealing.

Stephen de Martin is the good-looking
one from 4 Poofs & a Piano. - you know,
the four gay guys on the Jonathan Ross
show. Here he performs solo. Intimate
musical naughtiness is promised...
2nd-26th Aug at 4.05pm
Seriously: Pet Shop Boys
Reinterpreted
at Rocket @ Demarco
After selling-out and winning rave
reviews in Australia, Seriously:
Pet Shop Boys. Reinterpreted, is to get
its European premiere.
Five dynamite singers. A grand
piano. A string quartet. Profound
lyrics. Sumptuous melodies. Love.
Hate. Gay. Straight; this intimate
musical strips back the hi-energy
songs of Neil Tennant and Chris
Lowe to simple raw emotion... with
dazzling results.

Pieter is a drag artist who, on the night
the Berlin Wall went up. was
performing his cabaret show in the
West, while his sister Anna was trapped
in the East with her fiancee Karl, a
member of the East German secret
police. What happens next?
With the various homophobic attacks
on Pride events and the gay community
in places like Russia, Poland and Latvia,
this company, Imaginary Forces, feel this
story has a particular relevance today.

Pop Idol winner and
our very own Scottish

stars in this pre-West

‘The greatest story

?
Heelz on Wheels
at the Theatre Workshop
Through a joyous melange of script and songs,
this show takes a wry look at disability,
sexuality, families, politics and consumerism.

Luke Wright’s Poetry Party
at Dr Roberts’ Magic Bus
Luke Wright is one of the UK’s
best stand-up poets. His show
Poet Laureate debuted at
Edinburgh last year to a host
of four and five star reviews.
Former member of Aisle:16,
he is a talent that ScotsGay has
been raving about for years.
In 2007 he is re-united with
the A:16 boys - with a host of
others - for a two day poetry
party.
The full poetic line up is:
Luke Wright, Ross Sutherland,
Joel Stickley, Chris Hicks,
John Hegley, Lemn Sissay,
Murrray Lachlan Young, Tim
Turnbull, Francesca Beard,
Martin Newell, Kat Francois,
Clare Pollard, Roddy
Lumsden, Tim Wells, Polar

Exhilaration, imagination,
inspiration - it is amazing what one
green garden can contain. The
Edinburgh International Book Festival
at Charlotte Square Gardens has
something different.
The poet Jackie Kay is a good start.
There is always a warm smile in her
voice it seems, although this year she
will be focusing on the anniversary of
the abolition of black slavery.
11th Aug at 5pm
On the same day is Edmund White,
the big daddy of American gay fiction.
His new novel, Hotel de Dream, focuses
on the life of the American writer
Stephen Crane.
11th Aug at 8.30pm
Andrew O’Hagan will have more to
say about his subtle novel about an
inhibited gay priest, Be Near Me.
12th Aug at 8.30pm
Ali Smith, an Aberdonian, is very
keen on Tove Jansson, the Finnish
creator of the Finn Family
Moomimtroll, whom I remember from
my childhood. Jansson’s last novel, Fair
Play, has just been published in
English. Jansson is a gently brilliant
writer who opens the door to a quiet
liberation, wholly unpressured.
18th Aug at11am
Neil Barlett is a gay novelist and
playwright, and his new novel, Skin
Lane, is a “tale of erotic obsession.”
18th Aug at 7pm
Julian Clary has written a comic
satire on celebrity and the crime genre,
Murder Most Fab.
19th Aug at 6.30pm
Col Toibin is a fine Irish gay writer,
short listed for the Booker for his novel,
The Master. He will be talking about his
new story collection, Mothers and Sons.
21st Aug at 7pm
Val McDermid is the doyenne of
Scottish crime writers, and she will be
talking about her fiercely intelligent,
engrossing work.
14th Aug at 6.30pm
Musselburgh born Rhona Cameron
is sure to provide much entertainment.
Cameron is also a Patron of LGBT Youth
Scotland - Scotland's national agency for

SUPPORT PETER TATCHELL
Peter Tatchell has been at the forefront of gay rights and human
rights activism for almost 40 years. He has shone a light on many
forms of discrimination which, without his help, would have gone
largely unnoticed and unchallenged.
The Peter Tatchell Human Rights Fund (PTHRF) was established in 2002
to help finance Peter’s numerous campaigns. He is unpaid, with no
income, staff or office. He works 16 hours a day, 7 days a week.
This is putting him under intolerable strain and causing him constant
ill-health. Peter desperately needs paid staff to help with his campaigns.
HOW YOU CAN HELP…
As little as £5 a month can make a big difference.

Comedy Gala
at the Festival Theatre
Waverley Care, Scotland’s HIV charity, is to benefit from the proceeds of a
star-studded comedy gala. Hosted by television’s hottest new star,
Alan Carr, the gala offers Fringe-goers three hours of the very
best in comedy. Comedians announced to date include:
Phill Jupitus, Rich Hall, Jimmy Carr, Simon Amstell, Russell
Howard, Brendon Burns, Michael McIntyre, Shappi Khorsandi,
Barry Castagnola (of Cyderdelic) and Jon Richardson.
Star of Channel 4’s Friday Night Project, Alan Carr said: “I’m really
excited to be involved in the Comedy Gala as it’s always a fantastic night,
and for a great cause. I appeared as a guest in 2005, this year I’m hosting
it – next year I’ll probably be selling the ice cream.”
David Johnson, Director of Waverley Care said: “The money this will
raise is significant for a charity of our size, helping us to continue
making a real impact on people’s lives, as well as raising awareness amongst the Fringegoing public. HIV is still very much a live issue here in Scotland and Waverley Care is at the
forefront of providing the support that people need. We are deeply indebted to Alan Carr
and all the other comedians for giving so generously of their time.”

Menno wants to ‘butch-up’, he’s
fed-up being referred to as ‘another
camp gay guy’. This becomes even
more important when he falls head
over high heels for a closeted, ultramasculine, black, straight-acting

effeminate or even slightly ‘gay’.

This is a new production of Terrence
McNally's gay passion play that
caused all that uproar in New York
City ten years ago.
Seemed that the Catholic League
wasn't all that thrilled about Jesus
being portrayed as a gay man and,
among other things, they called in
bomb threats to the theatre delaying
the opening for two weeks.
Perhaps the most shocking fact about
this production is the lack of protests:
not a single threat, picket sign, or
mere grumble.
See for yourself the power this show
has to offer and “Challenge
Everything You Believe.”

On a hot summer night in
1969 an incident took place
in downtown Manhattan
that would change the face
of modern sexuality forever.
Stonewall is a darkly
humorous and frequently
poignant celebration of the
events leading up to that
explosive night - set to a
soundtrack of swinging
sixties girl groups. Adapted
from Rikki’s original
screenplay for Nigel Finch’s
award-winning movie of the
same name, Stonewall is the
story of sexual intrigue,
innocent romance and just
plain old fashioned bad
behavior that sparked the
most glamorous night of
civil disobedience in history.

Just a wee rant to start with, most of the
people who come round the bars holding
clipboards are volunteers. Would a little
manners be so much to ask? Whether you
support the organisation or not isn’t the
point, showing off to your cronies by
dismissively waving your hand by being
down right rude is really not that cleaver.
I would also like to take this
opportunity to thank all the venues who do
support the work done by community
groups. Gay Men’s Health is holding some
‘Groundbreakers’ in the near future to plan
the future of the organisation. If you do
have any ideas of what you would like to see
please get in touch. Proposals so far range
from a drama group, as if we don’t have
enough of that in the bloody LGBT Centre,
through to a boy drummer group.
Del’s is closing for a bit. It is going to be
refurnished with the minimum of fuss. Let’s
not forget that both the Court and the
Waterloo have had work done, the latter even
has a new owner! Delmonica’s will reap the
benefits of a higher ceiling and some nice
new sofas. Management have some new
ideas beyond karaoke and a quiz to entertain
you all. I’m not promising go-go boys in
cages - this is Glasgow after all - not
Edinburgh! (where in Edinburgh do you get boys
in cages apart from Saughton? – Ed) I’m sure
you will love what they do with it! Its still
one of our busier bars and I think it will out
live many others!
Those brave souls at The Lounge are
having a beach party on Sun 29th Jul,
Speedos and inflatables as far as the eye can
see! I hope the weather gets a wee bit better;
maybe they will have sun lamps! The
Merchant Pride now has the wonderful
Robert and May Miller on both Thu and Sun
night. You would be hard pressed to find a
better night out! Robert is gifted – last time
I missed most of the show from laughing!
Your jaws will be sore! May’s voice is quite
beautiful - she is a performer that really
involves the audience.

Ah the good old Edinburgh
Festival – don’t you just
love it? Theatre, Opera, Art
and Comedy from all over
the world descending on
our capital city for a month
of hedonistic pleasure!! For
the whole of Aug cultural
eyes gaze upon Edinburgh
in envy meanwhile its rival
city, Glasgow, huffs and
puffs with indignation – or
does it?
Put the Festival (or
Fringe) into perspective for a
moment. For all the wonders
of it there is so, so much to
drive you to distraction. The
inability to get served a drink
anywhere in the city without
a half hour wait at the bar.
The queues to get into even
the most mediocre
restaurant. The fight to walk
down any of the streets
without middle class English
students in tacky fancy dress
thrusting a flier for their
“must see” productions into
your unwilling hands! The
perpetual hunt to find a taxi
(oh wait a minute it’s
Edinburgh, that happens all
year round!). Yes, this is the
reality of Edinburgh during
the festival and believe me
this is not sour grapes from a
jealous Glaswegian! For years
I endured all this and more
(oh God, what tortuous
shows I’ve both seen and
acted in!) till I reached
boiling point and vowed
never to return! So if you’ve
had enough and fancy a
break from it all why not nip
down the M8 and visit
Glasgow – Edinburgh’s larger
and more happening sister
city??
Unlike our capital,
Glasgow is a year round
festival city. Not for us a
hectic schedule packed into
one month. Oh no, we have
festivals all year round to suit
every taste. Celtic Connections,
Jazz, Comedy and The West End
Festival are just a few things
on offer. We are also home to
Glasgay!, the UK’s largest gay
and lesbian festival but in the
spirit of good will for which
Glasgow is renowned we’ve
decided to have a break from
them in Aug and let
Edinburgh have its moment
in the sun – or more likely its
moment in the haar which
frequently rolls in from the
North Sea. We just sit back in
Aug and let you sample our
multitude of attractions.
If it’s the gay scene your

Edinburgh Gold. The monthly meet of Lesbian and
Gay Real Ale Drinkers is a week later than usual this
month: Mon 13th Aug in the Regent from 8pm(ish).
BearScots are having their annual summer BBQ
on Sat 11th Aug in South Queensferry. As usual, the
event is graciously organised by Scott and John who
are taking care of the food, but you’ll have to bring
your own drinks. Basically, bring whatever you’d like
to drink for the event. South Queensferry is having
their annual Fair on the same day, so car traffic will
be restricted. For details visit www.bearscots.org.uk
or Tel: 0131-600 0170. Arrangements for
Bearscotfest 2007, which runs Fri 5th-Sun 7th Oct,
are now finalised and can be perused at
www.bearscots.org.uk/documents/bs_bearscotfest_2
007.pdf - organisers say that there has been lots of
interest in the event this year and that booking is
pretty essential. The Bears have also decamped from
No 18 and are now meeting at 2pm on the 1st Sat of
each month in Steamworks Sauna. Does this mean
that all the Twinks are now going to No. 18? Maybe I
should go and see!
The Luvvies Night Out are holding a Grease
themed talent contest – think the X-Factor but with
more sparkle. All acts will be competing for the ‘Gayrease Lightnin’ Trophy (don’t get excited) on Thu
2nd Aug upstairs at the Meadow Bar from 8-11pm.
Audience tickets are £4 and are available in advance
from [email protected] - with a
limited amount available on the door!
Trashed along with Taste and Trendy Wendy are
pleased to present an exclusive one off event on Sat

Mingin’ is on hold for the moment. Alan Joy
tells me that he doesn’t currently have a venue lined
up but hopes that the one nighter will return later in
the year. And apologies to anybody who turned up
for Utter Gutter in Jul. Both Glasgow and Edinburgh
Gutters have dried up for the summer. They’ll be
back in Sep.
The LGBT Centre for Health and Well Being (or,
as I call it, the Wealthy Liver Centre) is having an
Open Day on Sat 28th Jul. The doors are open to all
from Noon-4pm – so if you’re in town pop along
and see them. If you’ve ever wondered what goes on
at the Centre, now is your chance to find out...
whether you want to know more about volunteering,
groups, how to get involved with running activities,
or have other ideas on things you’d like to see
happening there, come along! This autumn will see
the Centre hosting an innovative programme of
events and workshops for LGBT people who have an
interest in their emotional and mental health. Events
include workshops on Mental Health and
Relationships, Talking About Recovery, Talking
About Self Harm and Suicide. There will also be
sessions covering managing conflict and stressful
situations, crisis planning, ageing and identity, Food
& Mood, Safer Sex, and spiritual needs in a mental
health context. Other events will include the new
Living Life to the Full programme facilitate by
Depression Alliance Scotland and an eight week
course on Transition, goal setting and change for
Transwomen. The programme will be officially
launched during the Open Day at 2pm. Visit
www.lgbtmindmatters.org.uk for more information.
Finally, I see that the Glenn and Michael
Cavalcade has moved through to Glasgow.
Nevertheless, although Debs tells me that the
erstwhile Destination - now Priscilla’s - in Leith Walk
is under new ownership and management, the silvertongued Glenn Anderson remains the licencee until
the next Board meeting! Glasgow is certainly in for
some interesting times from the dynamic duo.
During August, the Edinburgh Festivals fill the City. Apart from the planeloads of fresh totty arriving every day, we also have the advantage of greatly liberalised licencing hours, so most of the pubs and clubs will be open until much later than the
regular hours shown below in our listings. If the closing time is important to you: please phone the venue direct.

Jodie Fleming will be back next month.
Pics by Jessica Nicolson and Martin Walker, taken at Planet Out, CC Blooms & The New Town Bar
Jodie is on holiday, so it’s up to the Troll to tell
all from Edinburgh this month.
A new Lesbian Social Group launches in the
Regent on Wed 15th Aug at 8pm. Can you get a bit
wearied by the Scene? Do you long to meet likeminded women for friendship, support, stimulating
conversation? Would you like to make new gay
friends to go to the movies, theatre, pub, dancing etc
with? Well, now you know where to go! Thereafter,
it will take place at the Regent on the 3rd Wed of
each month. E-mail: [email protected] or Tel:
0131-523 1007 to get contact details, or just turn up.
Girlie Night Velvet is celebrating with a Birthday
Party in Studio 24 on Fri 24th Aug (rather than the
usual Sat). There will be a Festival licence to 5am.
Whilst numbers haven’t quite returned to the level
that Jean was getting at Mariners, regulars certainly
seem to enjoy themselves and I’m surprised that
more dykes don’t make their way down to this
centrally located and homely venue.
Farewell to Ray and Andy at Twist - after some
17 or so years, the popular publicans have hung up
their pintpots. And then there was Chapps before
that - it seems like yesterday, but that was 20 plus
years ago although still sadly missed by many!
Jimmy Quinn, who a few of you may recall
owned QT’s - another Edinburgh boozer lost in the
mists of time - has now acquired the lease for the
Dublin Street establishment. He’s reverting the
name to the New Town Bar and is running it as a
straight-friendly LGBT place. However, he’s leaving
the day to day management to Alan Emerson
(previously assistant manager at the Laughing Duck).
He told me, “I’m going to be taking a back seat maybe buying my friends the odd pint or so”.
Downstairs is going to be very much a male oriented
space (apart from the monthly incursion of FurBurger).
Beer News: A big change at Sala - out goes the
Deuchars IPA to be replaced by Stewart Brewing’s
VIBE
eGo, 14 Picardy Place. Tel: 0131478 7434. Tue 11pm-3am. All the
normal madness from DJ Spyke,

ABERDEEN
40 Years since the Sexual
Offences Act
In 1967 the Sexual Offences Act was
passed, decriminalising homosexual acts in
private in England and Wales although
similar law reform didn’t happen here in
Scotland until 1980. As a large industrial
and fishing dependent city, Aberdeen had its
fair share of so called “friendly” venues
where gay men could go and feel safe with
their sexuality. “Jean’s Bar”, “Silver Slipper”,
“Dizzy’s” and “The North British” were all
places frequented in the 60’s. As part of the
G Zone site, I am hoping to include photos
and memories of the various venues across
Aberdeen throughout the years, it would be
good to have something from the 60’s right
to the present day. If you have anything you
want to contribute drop me and e-mail at
the usual address.

What’s gender equality got to do with
them??
Aberdeen City Council has a long
history of working with and supporting the
LGBT community in the city. Remember
that Aberdeen City Council was the first
Council in Scotland to publish a LGBT
Action Plan, back in 2001? Well now the
Council has included the views of LGBT
people in its recently published Gender
Equality Scheme – together with a
commitment to further actions to promote
equality.
You can find the Gender Equality
Scheme on the Council’s website at
www.aberdeencity.gov.uk also don’t forget –
Pride in Aberdeen is the LGBT community
forum for the city. (Yes, Pride does more
than organise the wonderful annual Pride
event.) Pride engages with the Council and
other public bodies to improve services in
the city for LGBT people. You can get
involved in Pride too – contact Pride in three
