Moon Cakes and Memories, Family and Friends
Strolling along the Avenida Dr. Sun Yat-Sen, which takes in the Peninsula’s
coastal areas, is always a breezy, uplifting experience. Come sundown,
the shorefront promenade walk takes on an almost magical allure,
particularly in September. Crowds this year will gather for the weekly
weekend spectacle of the 27th Macau International Fireworks Display
Contest. Not to mention the myriad activities surrounding the Mid-Autumn
Festival and World Tourism Day on 27th September such as watching the
moon from various high vantage points, traditional activities, catching up
with the flash mobs, and getting together with family and friends over a
meal or drink in the many restaurants, bars and hotels. Enjoying moon
cakes and a cup of Chinese tea under the full moon while fireworks
cascade from the sky is also a great way to experience the very special

atmosphere of the Mid-Autumn Festival in Macau.
In the daytime, start your stroll from Macau Fisherman’s Wharf, with
its harbour-front hotels, restaurants and bars modelled on traditional
European architecture, and pop in to see periodic exhibitions or
performances. Walk on a little further to the Macau Science Centre
designed by world-renowned Chinese-born American architect Leoh
Ming Pei, with its distinctive, asymmetrical Centre comprising an
exhibition centre, planetarium and convention centre. Four main theme
areas revolve around children’s interests, technology, environmental
science and living, emphasising interactive exhibits that encourage an
appreciation of the world we live in.
Just across the road, Macau Cultural Centre regularly hosts mega
events such as the Macau International Music Festival in October
and the Macau City Fringe Festival in November, Broadway musicals
and world famous soloists, orchestras, bands and theatrical dramas
– check out this month’s programmes in these pages! Nearby, the
five-storey Macau Museum of Art features five different types of
exhibition area. The Centre also frequently invites experts from home
and abroad to discuss various exhibition themes. Drop by the gift shop
to pick up some very unique exhibition-themed souvenirs.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Institute for
Tourism Studies (IFT), renowned local photographers
Ao Peng, Carlos Dias, Tam Kai Hon, Ao Chi Keung
and Kong Iu Lam seek in this exhibition to look into
the future, while recalling memories of the past. The
precious photographs selected for this exhibition were
taken from 1960 to 1990 by the photographers as they
wandered the hotchpotch of streets and lanes of Macau, capturing not only the historical
changes of the buildings but the wonderful cultural landscapes of people’s lives.
