The lovely summer and early harvest in 2013 provided fruit on the edge of ripeness. The cooler temperatures and rain that that began in late September created more balanced and finesse-driven wines. The percentage of fruit from Vitae Springs Vineyard decreased in 2013 because of crop failures due to frost and rain during bloom. Almost half of the Villages Cuvée came from mature plantings at our estate, Zenith Vineyard. This is the first time Shea and Temperance Hill wines were included giving it a broader and more layered profile. It has a nose with nuanced red cherry, berry and cola with, ground spices, menthol, anise, and fresh cut flower notes. It is layered in the mouth with tart cherry, cranberry, wild berry flavors with dark spices, earth, and hints of coffee, cedar, and sassafras. The Villages Cuvée will benefit from being opened and decanted for 1-2 hours. Its balanced and layered flavor profile makes it a great match for a wide variety of fish, wild bird, pork and other medium-bodied preparations. Bottled in September '14, it is approachable now and can be aged up to 5 years to gain complexity. Nautilus Sauvignon Blanc | Retail by the Bottle 16.99 | Glass 8.00 The 2015 Nautilus Sauvignon Blanc displays intense aromas of passionfruit skin, elderflower, and hints of honeydew melon. The palate introduces a delightful lime/citrus based mouth-watering intensity and finishes with a strong textural component. Queens Peak Cabernet Sauvignon | Retail by the Bottle 16.99 | Glass 8.00 Our 2013 Queens Peak Cabernet Sauvignon opens with enticing aromas of toasted coconut, rich blackberry fruit and notes of dried dill and vanilla. Beautifully-crafted and complex, showing flavors of dark chocolate covered cherries, fresh-brewed coffee and coconut cream pie. The 100% American Oak driven wine gains depth and nuance alongside dusty tannins, vibrant dark berry fruit and a robust, long finish. Well-balanced and graceful, the subtle notes of earth and herbs make this wine a perfect partner for foodpairing. Try with small dishes like porcini mushroom phyllo cups or crostini of countrystyle pâté with fig compote. For heartier fare, try pairing with dishes like espresso braised beef with marble potatoes or roasted duck breast with a cherry reduction. Domain Sorin Rose |Retail by the Bottle 14.59 | Glass 7.50 A blend of 40% Grenache, 40% Cinsault, 10% Syrah and 10%Mouvedre. A classic example of theProvence Rose, the wine is very dry but has flavors of cherry, watermelon, andcranberry. It's great on its own on awarm day, but has enough depth to pair with foods such as fish and vegetabledishes. 4 Boonsboro Country Club Mother’s Day Buffet Sunday, May 8th | 11:30 AM - 2:00 PM Roasted Red Pepper and Tomato Bisque Citrus Lump Crab and Jumbo Shrimp Salad Smoked Salmon Tar Tar and Smoked Whitefish Spread Chilled Asparagus with Deviled Eggs Green Beans and Ham Au Gratin Yukon Gold Potatoes Eggs Benedict with Spinach, Ham, Tomato and Hollandaise Petite Filet Mignon Oscar with Asparagus, Crabmeat and Tarragon Cream Sauce Golden Fried Scallops and Calabash Shrimp Almond Crusted Chicken and Sauce Supreme Chocolate Lover’s Dessert Bar Adults: $24.95 | Children 6-11: $9.95 | Children 5 & Under: $4.95 Father’s Day on the Lawn Sunday, June 21st | 5:30 PM - 8:30 PM Featuring entertainment from Amy Andrews Chicken Tortilla Soup Mango Habanero Glazed Wings Jalapeno Poppers Black Bean Spring Rolls 3-Cheese Tomato Flatbread Minted Watermelon Salad Strawberries with Vanilla Yogurt Grilled Pineapple with Coconut Cream Lemon Blueberry Jell-O Grapefruit Supreme with Balsamic Mandarin Orange Ambrosia Short Ribs of Beef, Green Chile, and Cheese on Jalapeno Corn Bread Open Faced Turkey, Salsa, Jack Cheese and Avocado on Focaccia Bread BBQ Chicken Bacon and Cheese Sliders Chicken Quesadillas Molten Brownie Pie with Vanilla Ice Cream Adults: $21.95 | Children 6-11: $9.95 | Children 5 & Under: $4.95 Club Chronicle May | June 2016 5 INDEPENDENCE th JULY Monday, July 4th 5:30 PM - 9:30 PM Live Entertainment by the Daniel Kepel Young Band Pulled Pork BBQ | BBQ Pork Spareribs | Golden Friend Chicken Burgers and Dogs | Fireworks | Kid’s Activities & More! *Please make your reservations by July 1st!* Adults: $24.95 6 Boonsboro Country Club Children 6-11: $9.95 Children 5 & Under: $4.95 Calling all BST swimmers! Club Chronicle May | June 2016 9 Chip Shots John Comninaki PGA Professional, Director of Golf May and June are just the best months to be out on the golf course and the golf schedule reflects that fact. The next two months will be extremely active and the golf shop staff will do its very best to make sure everyone is informed of what is happening on the golf course. This summer will be the season of our Triple Crown. But instead of The Derby, The Preakness and The Belmont Stakes, it will be The Member Guest, The Club Championship and The Member Member. It will be a great deal of golf in a short period of time; the Member Guest, June 3-4, the Club Championship, June 24-25-26, and the Member Member, July 8-9. Interest should be high, the golf course will be great and everyone will be in mid-season form. Get the details inside the “Club Chronicle”. Besides our “major” events we have Mens Summer League beginning in May, a great spring lunar golf event,” Nine in the Light, Nine at Night” in May, and our always popular “Twilite Zone” par 3 golf tournament near the Summer Solstice in June. All these are great events and fun to play. Junior Golf and programs for new and returning women golfers kick into a higher gear in May and June. Team formation and practice will begin in May for our PGA Junior League golf team and David Phillips and Dylan Wright work to help get our ladies into the swing of things with sessions on Monday mornings and Thursday afternoons. I would like to introduce Joseph Bailey as a new addition to our staff. Joseph is from WinstonSalem, NC and a graduate of the Professional Golfers Career College in Hilton Head, SC. Joseph formerly worked at Country Club of Ashville and most recently at Poplar Forest Golf Course. Joseph has a proven record of improving junior golf programs and we will be excited to see his skills develop at Boonsboro Country Club. John Comninaki Weeks of preparation and research heading in to The Bourbon and Branchwater draft payed off as Billy McBratney of the Bourbons captained his team to the victory over Norman Darden of the Branchwaters with a score of 8.5-3. Let this be a lesson to all future captains, research before you draft! 10 Boonsboro Country Club Golf Course Announcements and First Tee Closings The golf shop will open at 7:30 on weekdays and 7:00am on the weekends and holidays. LEAGUE FORMATION: We hope that sign up will create a need for multiple leagues. Each League will consist of a maximum of 10 two-man teams. This would require that a team would play a total of 9 matches versus each team in your league. Based on sign-up, if there are fewer than 10 teams in a league, fewer matches will be played to complete league play in the round robin format. Teams will be placed into leagues based on the total handicap of each team. DATES: May 19th, 26th, June 9th, 16th, 23rd, 30th, July 7th, 14th TEAM FORMATION: This is a member’s only league. There will be an 18 stroke maximum on individual handicaps a maximum differential of 10 strokes between team members. If a team has a larger difference, the higher handicap will be reduced so that the spread equals 10. This rule prohibits a player from receiving more than one stroke on a hole in a match. TEES: Matches are to be played from the BLUE TEES. Players over the age of 60 and a handicap of 18 or higher will play the GREEN TEES. All players age 65 and older will play from the GREEN TEES. All players age 65 and over with a handicap of 18 or higher will play the WHITE TEES. All players 70 and older will play from the WHITE TEES. Players must play from the same set of tees for the entire season and playoffs. Handicap stroke allocation will be adjusted for all play from the forward tee markers. HANDICAPS: Revised handicaps on the 1st & 15th of each month will be used in all league competition. There will be a list of members requesting to be on a “sub list” (who is not competing in your league) provided to each player. Contact info – cell phone # and email address of “subs” will be provided at the beginning of each season. Create a team of 3-4 players who can rotate in and out of the matches throughout the season so you don’t have to commit to playing in all rounds! ENTRY FEE: $100.00 per team FORMAT: Formats will change week to week; betterball of two, alternate shot, shamble, etc. A 10 point system will be used in league matches. Each hole will be worth one point. A win earns one point, a tie earns 1/2 a point, and a loss earns zero points. In addition, a point will be awarded to the team that wins the match. In the event of a tie, that point will be split. Remember, this is modified match play over the entire 9 holes. All matches will be played entirely on either the front or back sides. A few snows and some cold temperatures, a little rain and a lot of unseasonably warm temperatures. I can’t remember a March as warm as this one. The temperatures enabled us to work on and complete nearly all of the projects and routine maintenance that we had hoped to. Our Greens drainage project went very smoothly. XGD Systems brought a crew of six men and they were able to complete the installation of sub-surface drainage on our 1st and 5th green, on time and on budget. This company does excellent work and most golfers won’t even be able to tell the work has been done by the time they read this. Our all-weather tee line was installed in February and March as well. A competent contractor and a high quality supplier came together to give us what we were looking for and more. The TurfHound Company’s Tee line has been very well received and we have enjoyed lots of positive feedback. This added amenity should provide a durable tee line to practice from as well as enable us to provide a much better natural turf teeing ground during the season. Our upgraded tree maintenance program has also enjoyed a great first quarter. Bartlett Tree Experts have worked on over twelve key trees on the golf course and club house grounds. The work that has been done this year is work that could be done without the leaves on the trees. As the spring and summer move on, additional trees will be worked on. In the clubhouse front lawn, the large white oak and the three smaller Shumard oaks were pruned to 30 Boonsboro Country Club promote safety and proper structure. Bartlett also used what is called an air spade to perform root invigoration on those four trees. This process loosens up the soil around the base of a tree and removes excess soil and mulch from the root flare. We discovered a lot of roots in that area around the Shumard Oaks, that left alone, would have strangled the tree. These roots were removed. Next we incorporated compost into the disturbed area and mulched lightly. This should help there tree for a long time. Along with our stepped up tree program, we are also using Bartlett to help us with our boxwoods around the club. It’s hard to believe that we have over 175 boxwoods on our property. Many different English, American and Korean boxwoods have been planted here over the years. We are stepping up our maintenance program to include fertilization and pest management. Having been overlooked for some time, it will take a season or two to see improvements in the health and vitality of these plants. We are confident that we are on the right path to improving the long-term health and value of Boonsboro’s boxwoods. Our golf schedule really picks up in May and June. Please be sure to check with the pro-shop for the many member events that we have going on. The Fox Puss, the Men’s Member-Guest and Club Championship and Senior Inter-club are on the Men’s side. The BWGA 4-Ball Invitational, One-day Member-Guest Tournaments for 18 and 9 holes, along with the Member -Member make up the Women’s side.
