July | August 2015
From the Desk of...
R. Bradley Barden
General Manager, Chief Opera ng Officer
De
M
r,
Here we are in the middle of summer with
many great events ahead of us. Hopefully, you have
enjoyed all of the special events that June had to
offer and that you can join us for Independence Day
on Saturday, July the 4th for our biggest single event
of the year with over 700 members and guests in
attendance. Check out the rest of the Club Chronicle
for details about activities in golf, tennis and the
clubhouse for the balance of the summer. We are
still planning to have fireworks again on Labor Day
Sunday, so remember to plan to end your summer
with a bang!
I would like to take this opportunity to
welcome all of our newest members and their
families who have joined the Boonsboro family since
the beginning of spring. You have given the club a
lot of new energy and spirit and we hope this is the
beginning of a long and lasting relationship. Please
be sure to let us know if there is anything we can do
to make your membership experience more
memorable. In addition, I would like to thank our
members for helping bring new families to our Club,
we cannot grow our membership without you!
Did you know that every Thursday night,
starting at 4:00 p.m., the clubhouse offers happy hour
for your favorite beverages? We combine a special
promotion every Thursday night to align itself with
happy hour for the entire evening. During the
summer, we feature Burger Night and the rest of the
year the food may vary, but happy hour stays in
place. We offer $2.00 drafts on domestic beer, $2.00
off bottled/craft beer, $2.00 off house wines and
2
Boonsboro Country Club
$2.00 off any mixed beverage all year long. These
specials are available anywhere in the clubhouse and
front lawn.
Did you know that you, as a member, may
sponsor a guest, business or charity to host a party or
special event at the Club? When you hear your
friends discussing having a retirement dinner or
wedding or anniversary let them know that you
would be happy to assist them with selecting
Boonsboro as their venue. Just give us a call to let us
know you are willing to sponsor them and we will
take care of the rest of the details to ensure your
guests have a great experience. You can even
sponsor someone to play golf, tennis or just have a
special dinner, and you do not have to join them in
person, just set it up in advance. Of course all
applicable charges must be put on your account
number and payment arrangements must be
discussed, too.
On a note from your Board of Directors, they
will be having their annual Strategic Planning
Retreat on Tuesday, August 18th at the clubhouse.
The purpose of this meeting is to establish a working
strategic plan for club operations and decision
making going forward. When you work in a
business environment like we have faced over the
past 6 years, it is imperative that proper planning
leads the way towards prioritizing the challenges we
face to make our Club be the best it can be. Our
ultimate goal is to exceed member expectations. I
hope you enjoy the rest of your summer.
Best Regards,
Brad Barden, CCM
The left picture is of us taken at Boonsboro Country Club on the first Easter
Sunday following the year we were married on May 22, 1965. We just celebrated
our 50th Wedding Anniversary on May 22, 2015 and hosted our visiting family
members for Sunday dinner at BCC on May 24th. While we have many happy
club memories, several really stand out: Don, a member of BCC for over 50
years, joined the Club shortly before we married in 1965 and his BCC friends, all of
whom worked at Babcock and Wilcox Company at the time, hosted his bachelor
party on the front lawn. Our son Edward and daughter Margaret "grew up" at
Boonsboro and always enjoy coming back for a visit as our guests for the July 4th
celebration, swimming and lunch by the pool when in town. And now the 3rd
generation, our two granddaughters, 12 and 14, also love visiting the club for
brunch on Easter Sunday. Boonsboro is a great club and we are thankful for the
many wonderful memories held by our family over these past 50 years.

Congratulations to the Blue Marlins on an awesome first swim meet against the Wildwood Stingrays.
It was a hard fought battle with the score remaining tight throughout the meet. Unfortunately, the Stingrays claimed the win by a very small margin finishing with a final score of 330-319. We are very proud of all
of our swimmers. Many “A” times were achieved and spirits were high. Overall, it was a great start to what
will surely be a fantastic season! Keep up the great work Blue Marlins!
Congratulations also to Stella Cook and Charlie McVeigh, our first “swimmers of the week” for the
Dual Meet season.

Cookouts and fireworks are two big parts of
Boonsboro’s golf and social events for July. The golf
fireworks are in the form of our annual Member
Member Golf Tournament on July 11 and 12. This
is the most popular and well supported golf event of
the year. The weekend kicks off with a two man
team Alternate Shot on Friday evening, July 10, and
the tournament officially begins Saturday, July
11. The event includes a great Saturday night party
with food and drink you and a Sunday lunch to top
off the weekend. Details are included within the
Chronicle and registration is available through the
website and in the golf shop. The other popular
event is our Adult Youth Golf on July 4
afternoon. This fun family event is a great way to
spend July 4 afternoon with the family before the
big cookout and fireworks show. The tee time is
2:30 and you can play as many as 18 holes or as few
as 3, depending on the age and ability of your
children.
August is championship month as the
Juniors, Senior Men’s and Women’s Championships
are all contested in the month of August. The
Junior Club Championship will be played July 31
and August 1. On the evening of Saturday, August
1 evening we will have the junior skills challenge
for competitors of all ages. The 15th and 16th of
August will see our Women’s and Senior
Championships conducted. This event will conclude
with a celebratory lunch on Sunday afternoon for all
participants and their spouses.
Summer heat can be dangerous. I think we
are all aware of the dangers of heat exhaustion and
heat stroke. Please make sure you take care of
yourself and others by staying well hydrated and
staying in the shade as much as possible when
playing in the heat of July and August.

Men’s Member-Member
Saturday - Sunday, July 11th-12th
Always the most popular event of the year and a “don’t miss” event. A great weekend of fellowship,
golf and good times. The weekend kicks off with the Member-Member Foursomes (Alternate Shot) detailed
below and is followed by 18 holes of golf Saturday and Sunday. Anticipate tee times for each day as the popularity of this event prevents the tournament using a shotgun start. Saturday night is one of the summer’s
highlight as the club will be at its finest for an evening of food and fellowship with food stations throughout
the clubhouse beginning at 7:00 pm (Bar service from 7:00 pm until 10:00 pm with three varieties of frozen
daiquiris available) and Sunday, following golf, there will be a buffet lunch and scoring party for the contestants and their spouses.
The format is better ball of two, net. There will be one flight for gross scores. Teams will be preflighted by the combined handicap of the team. Teams will not be permitted to have more than a 10 stroke
differential between the handicaps of the two teammates. If a team wants to play and has a greater handicap
spread than 10, the higher handicap will be lowered to conform to the 10 stroke rule and the team will be
flighted accordingly. The tournament will have an open division for all players under the age of 55 and a
senior division comprised of players age 55 and over. To compete in the senior division, both players on the
team must be over age 55. The open division will play from the blue or green tees dependent on flight and
the senior division will play from the white tees. Pairing request will be honored for the first round and play
will be off the first tee with tee times for the first round. The tournament will have a split tee start, #1 and
#10, and there will be morning and afternoon “waves” of tee times. Tee times will be from approximately
8:00am until 9:20am and 12:00pm and after. Please indicate your preferred starting time and pairing request on the sign up sheet or the online registration. The entry fee is $220.00 per player and includes golf
carts, on course beverages, including keg beer, and dining events Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon for
players and spouses.
Member-Member Foursomes
Friday, July 10th
This event on Friday, July 10th is Foursomes (Alternate Shot) followed by a dinner and “social hour”.
This is a separate event from the Member-Member and is not included in the Member-Member entry fee.
Anyone can play in the Alternate Shot, you do not have to be entered in the Member-Member, or you can
play with a different partner. Friday’s event will begin at 5:00 pm and the cost will be $55.00 per person including carts and dinner. Adult beverages will be served and charged to member’s tickets

Boonsboro Country Club
Senior and Women’s Club Championships
Saturday - Sunday, August 15th-16th
The field will be divided into three divisions. The Men’s Open Division is for any player age 55 and
over and will compete from the green tees. The Men’s Senior Club Champion will come from the Open Division. The Men’s Super Senior Division will be all players who choose to play from the white tees and are
over the age of 60. The Women’s division will play from the silver tees. All divisions will have flights and
details are available on the website and on the signup form. There will be prize for first and second low
gross in each flight as well as low net within each flight of each division. Tee times will be used on
Saturday, August 15 and play will begin with a shotgun start at 9:00 am on Sunday, August 16. There will
be an awards party on the front lawn and food and beverages for the participants and their spouses
beginning at 1:00pm. The entry fee is $40.00.
Twilight Dinner League
6:15pm shotgun start
Each Wednesday through Labor Day
This is a two person 8 hole dinner league devoted to having fun, meeting new people, and enjoying a nice
evening out. Singles are welcome to sign up individually and we will pair them to play together!
Varied formats each week ranging from alternate shot, best ball, and scramble. There will be a special light
fare menu provided so you can preorder your meal before you play. We will provide each player with one
drink ticket to redeem for any beverage you choose from the grille or Tavern Bar.
$25 per couple: Golf, snacks, and your favorite drink
$50 per couple: Golf, snacks, drinks, and dinner
July 4th Adult Youth Golf Event
Celebrate the July 4th holiday by taking your son or daughter to the golf course to play in this ninehole event that begins at 2:30 pm. The format of play will be alternate shot (Pinehurst Scotch) for 3-6 or 9
or 18 holes depending on the age and skill level of the child. Tees will be set by divisions. Medals will be
awarded to the winners in each division.

Racquet Round Up
Drew Robinson
USPTA Professional, Director of Tennis
I hope you are having a great summer and want to
encourage you to sign up for our weekly email blast. This is
the best way to stay informed on all club tennis events and
activities. If you would like to be added, please email me so I
can add you. Other outlets we use to communicate events are
the calendar on our club website, bulletin board and flyers
around the club. As always, if you have an idea of a tennis
event you would like to see happen, please email me your ideas
with specific details. We are always looking at ways to make
these events more enjoyable and we hope to bring some of
these new ideas to the line up in fall 2015 and 2016.
exceptions being food for kids with special dietary needs or
allergies.
We had a great turnout for the Boys and Girls Club
Charity Tournament in May with 20 teams! The Sara K.
Buckley Pink Invitational featured 32 teams! The tournament
generated over $15,000 for the Pearson Cancer Center.
You can register online for all classes, clinics and programs
24/7 at your convenience.
Congratulations to the USTA 7.0 Mixed Doubles
Team captained by Camp Sommardahl who reached the
District tournament and to all of our adult league champions
listed below. We have first place represented in 6 out of 7
U.S.T.A. leagues in the 18 and over format.
I have several important reminders for all of the
membership.:
1) TRX
4) Online Court and Program Reservations are Easy
We encourage you to familiarize yourself with the online court
reservations system. Currently, ball machines may be booked
online one day in advance after 5:00pm. The outdoor ball
machine has limitations on evening usage. Reservations of the
main courts are now online for booking three or less days in
advance via telephone.
5) Unsupervised Children and Court Etiquette
We encourage the supervision and control of young children
around the tennis courts, indoor tennis, tennis shop and
viewing areas. There have been some requests by our tennis
players for this action.
Please remember to use a moderate volume level when people
are playing around you.
Cell phones should be kept on vibrate and phone conversation
taken off the courts!
6) Lesson Bookings
TRX is an evolving program at BCC and we will continue to
offer mornings under the direction of Iron and Grace. TRX is
a great way to help you gain strength, flexibility, balance and
core stability which will help your tennis, golf or pickleball
game! Register for Classes by calling the tennis desk or at the
club website!
2) Do you play Pickleball?
We currently have a small group of players that play Monday
at 10:30am and Thursday at 12:00 noon. We have been
approached by others regarding this popular growing sport
and we will be hosting the Commonwealth Pickleball
tournament in August.
3) Bringing in Outside Food or Beverage
Since the Club has a food and beverage operation that is
provided for the membership it is important for the
membership to be aware that you are not allowed to bring in
food, beverages or alcohol from the outside with the following

To improving everyone’s game any way we can. You can
contact us directly to set up a lesson.
We do understand things come up suddenly but please be sure
to cancel any lessons early so we can use the time!
Thanks to everyone who cheered us on at the CVITT.
It was a great feeling having that support. I hope everyone
will take advantage of the great tennis weather and come out
for an event in July or August! 4th of July activities and winter
contract information are available on the following pages and
the 16th Annual Pro-Am is coming up in September.

Behind the Greens
Steve Vessells
Greens Superintendent
July usually signals a few transitions on the
golf course. In the spring, we are consumed with
trying to groom and keep the grass cut on our
greens. In July and August we are consumed with
trying to keep our greens alive.
The higher temperatures and higher
humidity put a lot of stress on our greens. With the
mixture of Poa Annua and bentgrass on our 85 year
old greens, we have to stay on top of disease and
water management. Anthracnose has been our
major disease issue over the last 10 years. It really
only effects the poa population on our greens, but it
can be very tough to control once it appears.
were killed by the cold temperatures and lack of
snow cover. The places that had some snow cover
seemed to have not experienced nearly as much
damage as the courses that were open during some
of the cold spells. It has been a long time since we
have seen this much winter damage and we were
lucky to have the cover of snow when it did get
really cold.
Of course September will be here before we
know it and that will mean greens aerification and
topdressing along with our annual over-seeding.
Summers can get crazy with vacations and sports
activities, but don’t forget to make time for golf. You
have a beautiful golf course and practice facilities
that is accessible to all our members with clinics,
camps and events happening most of the summer.
Remember to read your e-mail blasts and pay
attention to all that Boonsboro has to offer.
Hope to see you on the course!
Steve Vessells
Summer also means that our fairways and
tees will transition from ryegrass to bermudagrass.
Hopefully we will not even notice the change. At
this point of the season we are optimistic that there
is little or no winter-kill of our bermudagrass base.
Courses below Danville are seeing some
major problems with fairways and tees. Large areas
