Home-Based Business Success...
Chamber Members Share Insights Into
Building Practical and Rewarding Home Offices
Fortune 500 corporations such as Mary Kay Cosmetics, Ford Motor Company, Hershey’s and
even Apple Computer all trace their successes back to home-based business beginnings. In fact,
according to the U.S. Small Business Administration more than half of all American businesses are
based out of an owner’s home.
Have you recently started contemplating working in the same place that you live? Have you
picked out the space where your new “career” will be located? Are you realizing that start-up (or
relocation) costs might not be exactly what you had planned? Regardless of whether or not you’ve
started asking yourself these questions or similar, the fact is working from home is becoming
increasingly more practical and affording more economic successes for area businesspeople!
But is working from home right for you? Below read contributions from fellow Chamber members
who’ve already answered some of these questions and addressed other factors that sometimes
arise when starting a home-based business.
TRAVENTOURS EVENTS & EXCURSIONS, INC.
ANNE ALFORd, CMP, PRESIDENT
As a home-based business owner/operator,
what are the most common challenges that
you address?
Not having a store front makes it more difficult
to meet with clients when they want to come
to us; however, we try to use other local small
business eating establishments as a meeting
location to help promote their businesses. As
a tour and travel company being “home-based”
tends to give the impression that we are parttime agents rather than making the decision
to run our business from home. We also find
we are never really “closed” and it’s harder to
disconnect on traditional off times.
What advantages do you experience as a
home-based business owner/operator?
The disadvantage of never being truly closed is
also an advantage in the respect that we can do
business during non-traditional hours because
we are available when people call or email.
Working from home has saved us a tremendous amount of time and money commuting
as well as overhead expenses of operating a
store front. We can forward the phones and be
fully operational when we travel or go to events
so we always are available because our shop isn’t
“closed.’
What are main factors that come into play for
businesspeople who’re contemplating beginning
(or perhaps expanding) their own home-based
business?
Making sure that you have space and time to truly
separate the business from your home-life. It
requires a certain amount of structure to plan your
day so that you are truly working and not spinning
your wheels. Having a good CPA to give direction
on dividing home and business expenses is a must
at the beginning. Having a plan in place before you
make the move will make the difference in success
or failure.

DAVE KEMP, DIRECTOR OF SALES &
MARKETING
As a home-based business owner/operator,
what are the most common challenges that
you address?
The challenges we face are the same as any
business when you consider sales, marketing, and product(s). The difference for a home
based business is the environment in which
all that business takes place. There are unique
issues and distractions throughout the day
that cannot be avoided. However the more
you separate the business from the “home”
the less those influences affect the business.
Most common are interruptions to the flow of
product development and thought. Interruptions
that remove the course of the work environment often lead to repeated steps, time wasted
starting and stopping again and again, and loss
of focus. There are also issues of space and
adaptations that make up the work environment.
Sometimes the work space itself is a distraction. The advantage of a home based business
being flexible to address “home” issues is also
a disadvantage in being productive. Then there
is the issue of employees and what to do to
accommodate them.

(Continued from Page 3)
What advantages do you experience as a home-based
business owner/operator?
One of the best features of a home based business is the
commute. Falling out of bed and landing in the office can
literally mean making the most of the time you have. Then
there is the overhead of maintaining an outside office that is
avoided. Working before or after hours is easily accommodated. The obvious benefit is the flexibility to let the dog
out, feed the baby, and let the repairman in without getting
too far away from the business. Even though time is lost
it is easier to catch up when everything is close at hand.
Nothing beats “family time” rather than “drive time.”
What are main factors that come into play for businesspeople who’re contemplating beginning (or perhaps
expanding) their own home-based business?
Besides watching out for all the pitfalls of starting a business out of your home, businesspeople must first have a
product people will need or want. It must be of a quality
worthy of you. You must be passionate about what you are
doing and be prepared for a long haul. Do not under capitalize your efforts. In today’s market my friend Tom Reagin
says it better than me, “If there is one thing this ragged,
slogging economy has revealed to me, it’s that business
(development), survival, and growth now depend on grass
roots, micro-level relationship marketing. Connecting at the
ground level is more essential than ever for businesses of
all sizes. Asking valid questions, acknowledging needs, exemplifying integrity and earning trust one person at a time
are critical.” That’s why we belong to the Greater Brandon
Chamber of Commerce.

As a home-based business owner/operator, what are the most common
challenges that you address?
Maintaining a balance between home and business. Creating and adhering to an
acceptable work schedule. Because you are always at the office, the tendency is to
work all the time. It is difficult for family members to know when you are working
and not working. Another challenge are the physical limitations of the home itself.
The home is not designed to be a business. There are no set areas for employee
meetings, supply storage, vehicles, multiple work stations etc.
The port of tampa

Members of the Government & Economic Advisory
Council recently visited The Port of Tampa and
received a detailed briefing and boat tour from The
Tampa Port Authority in order to better understand
the workings of The Port and how expansion plans
could add jobs and opportunities to The Greater
Brandon Area.
The Port’s success is based largely on its handling

Years with Company: 2 yrs.
Years in Greater Brandon area: 20 years
What is unique or special about your business and
the products and services you offer?
Hippocampus Marketing is part marketing and part
education. The primary function of my company is to
help others succeed in the online world of business.
If you need someone to design a web site, we do it.
If you need to learn about Social networks and how
they work, I do that! If you want to learn about how to
do this on your own, I do that.
What markets do you serve?
The internet in my playroom, but I enjoy working with
business right here in the Greater Brandon area.
What are your business challenges and successes?
One of the greatest challenges is setting up my
seminars in such a way that everyone comes away
from them with good solid knowledge of where they
want to go with their online efforts.
What is your involvement with the Chamber and/or
other organizations?
I have been a chamber member now for a year with
this business, but have been a member with other
businesses over the last seven years.

& Professionals
Our advisory board has strong roots in our local
community. Our officers are also well connected
in the area and are uniquely able to assist clients’
needs beyond banking.
We are especially qualified to serve the unique needs

How did you get started in your current career?
I have been working in computer graphics for nearly
23 years and got into the internet side in 1996.
What advice would you give to someone starting
out in your field?
Get a good source of current information about how
the internet is working and where it’s going. When I
started in this field there were no degrees, but now
there are several good schools to learn from as well
as websites dedicated to giving away the information
for you to learn from. I am currently completing my

helped to be successful over the past 13 years.
How long have you been a Chamber Ambassador? What do
you enjoy most from serving as an Ambassador and why?
I became an Ambassador when we moved our business from
Lakeland to Brandon the 1st of this year. So far, it has been an
amazing experience for me, a great way for me to meet other
Brandon business owners and start building relationships.
Who is the most influential person in your life and why?
Besides my husband, mother-in-law, children and God – I would
say that I have two: Dave Ramsey – reading his books and
watching his videos has helped us to build our business on solid
footings and has helped our business to be debt free. The other
one would be Seth Godin. Reading all his books broadens our
thinking on how to help our business and others on how to best
market their business for success.
What are your interests and hobbies?
My passion is supporting our military servicemen/women and
their families. Mike and I have “adopted” whole units & battalions
of soldiers and sent them care packages throughout their
deployment since 1996. Last package we sent was over 900 lbs
of home-baked cookies – or 2,200 DOZEN cookies. Hobbies:
Fishing. While sitting in my umbrella’ed rocking chair, I catch the
“bait fish” while Mike does the hard stuff, like take the fish off my
hook, and use my bounty to catch our dinner – or at least, that’s
the way it’s supposed to work! I also enjoy doing just about
anything “arts and crafty.” Whether it’s scrapbooking, sewing
or cross-stitching – it doesn’t matter, as long as I can use that
creative side of my brain.
What is your favorite quote?

“When we ask where a customer has found us, the answer is
always ‘in the phone book.’ This year we decided to expand
our presence and place larger ads. We received a call almost
immediately after the phone book was released, again this
year from a group who never would have found us. When we
asked how they found us, once again, it was ‘the Chamber
phone book.’ For anyone who thinks that everyone uses the
internet instead, we are proof positive that is not the case.”
