An easy drive from Nashville
on the Natchez Trace Parkway,
venture into Hohenwald at a much
slower pace. Enjoy the Buffalo
River, streams and waterfalls, and
beautiful forests easily visible from
this National Scenic Byway. Step
back in time at sites exploring the
rich history of the area, such as
the grave of explorer Meriwether
Lewis, Captain of the Lewis and
Clark Expedition and for whom
Lewis County was named. Walk
in the footsteps of Andrew Jackson,
Meriwether Lewis by Charles Aaron Burr, Thomas Lincoln and
Willson Peale, from life, 1807. countless other early Americans

the lush Tennessee countryside.
The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee was founded in 1995, and
has become the nation’s largest natural-habitat refuge developed
specifically to meet the needs of endangered elephants. Located
on 2700 acres in rural Lewis County, The Elephant Sanctuary
is not open to the public, but their Welcome Center located at
27 E. Main St., in downtown Hohenwald is open for visitors.

Few other locales have such a diverse mix of sites, such as here
in Lewis County,—an Amish and Mennonite settlement and
general store, award-winning wineries, working farms, a 1960’s
commune, a natural history museum, an art gallery, antique
shops, golfing, racing, picnicking, junking, canoeing, fishing,
camping, and numerous hiking trails. When you get hungry,
there are several unique restaurants ready to attend your needs,
and numerous accommodations for your sleepy head. Get
away from it all and back to your roots, just an easy drive from
Nashville, Memphis or Birmingham.

us home. They are both located just off US Hwy. 412 East. 2 mi. east of
the Natchez Trace Parkway, turn left onto Ridgetop Rd. Wine tasting

Back to US Hwy 412, turn left and 6 mi brings you
to the blueberry patch at Highland Berries, 4411
Hampshire Pike. After your visit to the wineries stop
by & pick up some tasty farm fresh local produce.

Adventures along the Natchez Trace Parkway
Devil’s Backbone State Natural Area is at
milepost 394. This hiking trail is a moderately
strenuous loop that is about 3 miles long. 22
Milepost 391.9 is
Fall Hollow. You
can hike the moderately strenuous trail to
the waterfall. Take a dip in the cool waters.

At milepost
385.9 is the Meriwether Lewis
Monument and Gravesite. Meriwether
Lewis, Captain of the Lewis and Clark
Expedition is buried here beneath the
monument at Pioneer Cemetery. Take
time to stroll along the various trails, visit
the information station located in a 1930s
cabin. 23
From here, you can exit the Parkway onto TN
Hwy. 20 (aka Summertown Hwy.), turn left
(east) and visit the Amish and Mennonite community. Yoder’s Homestead Market, 3555
Summertown Hwy, is family owned and operated selling home-style sandwiches, cheese, and
deli meats, home-baked bread and pastries, spices, nuts, pastas, cookbooks

Tennessee National Raceway, 316 Race Track
Rd.,(3 miles west of town just off Hwy. 412 W.) is a huge attraction
for our area. The 1/3 mile dirt track hosts
some of the best races in the state of Tennessee.

Canoeing and fishing along the Buffalo
River is another popular pastime in our
area. Public access Natchez Trace Parkway

Disc golf (or frisbee golf) can be played at The
Farm Disc Golf Course, 136 Poplar Lane
in The Farm Community off TN Hwy 20 E.

Take a picnic to Wilhelm Tell Platz and relax
in the cool grass or under the bandstand. Located
on S. Maple St. in the downtown area. 30

The City of Hohenwald operates the Hohenwald
Municipal Golf Course, 829 Columbia Hwy. It is
a beautiful 9-hole course that lies on 58 acres, open
