A Glasgow Gang Observed
By James Patrick
In the 1960's a 26-year-old schoolmaster at a Scottish reformatory
(List D) School, under the alias of James Patrick, went undercover
with the help of one of his pupils to study the often violent
behaviour of the teenagers in a gang in Glasgow. He managed to conceal
his identity and motives and during the course of a four-month
assignation in 1966 he observed closely the gang members and concluded
that the boys were 'afraid of fighting other gangs but more afraid of
not fighting them.' Ultimately it was 'the struggle between
identification with the boys and abhorrence of their violence that
forced me to quit.'<BR><BR>This book became one of the first published
observations of a Glasgow gang and as such has stood the test of time
as a number of factors that Patrick identified as contributing to the
growth of gang culture still remain in existence today, most crucially
poverty, grim housing conditions and unemployment. This is a portrait
of gang culture before the drug barons moved in and created another
level of violence and as such it deserves its cult status.

Confusion To Our Enemies
Selected Journalism of Arnold Kemp (1939-2002)
Arnold Kemp
From the Foreword by Professor Tom Devine: Arnold Kemp, one of the
greatest of Scottish journalists and editors of the 20th century, died
prematurely at the age of 63 in 2002. He edited The Herald with
memorable elan and panache between 1981 and 1994 and his prolific
writings also regularly graced the pages of the Scotsman, the Guardian
and the Observer in a career which spanned more than four decades
from the year he began his first job in journalism in 1959 as a
sub-editor on the Scotsman, fresh out of Edinburgh
University.<BR><BR>Kemp left behind him a rich personal but
un-catalogued archive of newspaper articles, chapters in books and
opinion pieces. These have now been expertly harvested and selected by
his daughter, Jackie. Reading them, it is clear that her father was a
master of his trade, and that his published work provides a perceptive
and illuminating guide to the key historical events of his lifetime
in Scotland. This book encompasses the early rise of nationalism, the
traumatic de-industrialisation and then transformation of the economy
in the 1980s, the impact of the Thatcher governments on Scotland, the
halting progress toward devolution and then the successful
establishment of the Scottish Parliament in the last decade of the
century. These events and others are all recorded here, not in the
arid descriptive prose of the chronicler, but with the eloquence,
punch and insight for which Kemp was noted. As a result the recent
Scottish past is brought alive in an engaging and highly readable
fashion.<BR><BR>The immediacy of the reportage, the sense of a writer
who, because of his journalistic and editorial eminence knew all the
principal actors involved and was close to the unfolding of great
events, are all plainly evident to the reader. But Kemp also scorns
mediocrity, incompetence, humbug and hypocrisy in the political and
cultural life of the nation and several of the excerpts are also fair
and balanced judgements, perhaps most notably in the evaluation of the
impact of Margaret Thatcher on Scotland. There is a liveliness and
breadth in the writing, redolent of Kemp's own personal wide
international horizons, his travels in America and Europe, love of
conviviality and the craic. The passion for life shines through. This
is an important text for anyone wishing to come to a fuller
understanding of how Scotland developed from the dark days of the
Second World War to the current debates over independence. It is also
a hugely enjoyable read which many will savour with interest and
delight for its own sake.

Cummoangetaff!
15 of 102
By Allan Morrison
These adventures of Big Aggie MacDonald, the Glasgow tramcar clippie
with the caustic wisecracking tongue, will take you back to the golden
age of the tram.<BR><BR>These adventures of Big Aggie MacDonald, the
Glasgow tramcar clippie with the caustic wisecracking tongue, will
take you back to the golden age of the tram. Her rich, biting patter,
indiscriminately targeted at all and sundry, is the stuff for which
streetwise Glaswegians have become renowned. In Aggie’s day a hurl on
a tramcar wasn’t just another journey down to the shops – it was also
a jaunt in an atmosphere of a constantly changing patois emanating
from the likes of Big Aggie.<BR><BR>In the realm of the tramcar, Big
Aggie was queen and she did not suffer fools, tram inspectors and
blue-rinse maidens from Milngavie lightly. They were all targets and
always came away from a verbal confrontation with Big Aggie worse off
but wiser.

Encounters In The American Mountain West
A Sinner Amongst the Latter-Day Saints
Ian R Mitchell
Over the past 14 years Boardman-Tasker award-winner Ian R Mitchell has
been a frequent visitor to the wilds of Utah and the surrounding US
Mountain States. His motive has been not only to learn about the area
he calls almost a ‘black hole for Americans and foreigners alike’ but
also to get to know the people who live there and the wilderness many
of them know little about. <BR><BR>This book comprises 10 essays
covering his visits to the grounds of the ancient Anasazi
civilization, to mountains such as Timpanagos and Tukhunikivatz, to
the mining country of Carbon County and to the various sites
associated with the Mormon pioneers who settled Utah 150 years ago
revealing that the land of the Latter-Day Saints has much to reward
those who are curious enough to venture there.<BR><BR>In the course of
his travels Ian ventures along a series of trails that take him al
over the remoter and almost wholly ignored parts of area known as the
'American Mountain West'. These trails are based on either cultural or
geographic themes allowing Ian to venture in the hope of either
gaining insight and knowledge of the region, or to experience the
wilderness areas of some of America's most beautiful landscapes ... or

both.<BR><BR>After opening with The Road to Zion, Ian ventures out
first with an essay that conjoins Scotland and Utah through a chance
meeting with a Utah mountaineer then deals with his experiences along
the Cactus Ed Trail, which looks at Edward Abbey, author of Desert
Solitaire. The essays that follow this are: The Mormon Trail, The
Brigadoon Trail, The Trail of The Ancient Ones, The Cowboy Trail, The
Indian Trail, The Hanksville Trail, The Trail of the Mountain Men, The
Miners' Trail and finally 11 maps of the author's journeys. 24 pages
of colour images accompany the text.

Great Glen, The
From Columba to Telford
By Catriona Fforde
This book provides a picture of the Great Glen, stretching from Fort
William to Inverness, from AD550 to 1850. It begins with a description
of the glen as it is today and an account of its geological
development. This is followed by eleven chapters describing major
characters or events in the glen. These are: St. Columba, King Brude,
Macbeth, Alasdair Carrach (an early chief of the Keppoch MacDonalds),
the Battle of the Shirts, the 1st Marquis of Montrose, Sir Ewen
Cameron of Lochiel, Viscount (Bonnie) Dundee, the building of the
Military Roads, the 1745 Jacobite Rising and its aftermath and the
building of the Caledonian Canal. <BR><BR> There is a short final
chapter which makes some reference to the poets and musicians of the
glen. Brief passages throughout on political and social developments
serve to link the chapters together. <BR><BR> The book is academic to
some degree but perfectly comprehensible to the general reader with
any interest in history. It will be particularly welcome to the
hundreds of people who walk the Great Glen Way each year.

Labour Of Love
The Story of Robert Smillie
By Torquil Cowan
This is the story of Robert Smiliie,MP and trailblazing trade
unionist who was born into poverty in Belfast in 1857. He moved to
Scotland when he was 15 to join his brother James and became a miner
at 17 in Larkhall. This opened his eyes to the way miners were treated
by the mine owners and he realised that strong unions and the creation
of a political party to represent the working classes was desperately
needed. He became secretary of the Larkhall Miners and helped form the
Lanarkshire Miners' Association. He became friends with Keir Hardie
and together they rose through the ranks of the Labour movement.
<BR><BR>A year after Hardie became an MP, Smillie, along with men like
Tom Mann, Ben Tillett and Philip Snowden helped to create the
Independent Labour Party. In 1894 Smillie became President of the
Scottish Miners' Federation and played a major role in the formation
of the Scottish Trades Union Congress and a member of the Larkhall
School Board. He was then elected to the Miners' Federation of Great
Britain and was involved in the Royal Commission of Mines. He
persuaded the MFGB to affiliate to the Labour Party and in 1912 he
became President of the MFGB.<BR><BR>He was a pacifist and formed the
National Council Against Conscription which became, in 1917, the
National Council for Civil Liberties. He then worked to create the
Triple Industrial Alliance (mining, railways and transport workers)
but Lloyd George saw him as dangerous and in order to 'keep him
closer' he offered him a position in his wartime cabinet which Smillie
rejected. However, the miners who remained working during the war
enjoyed better terms and conditions as the Government had taken over
the running of them.<BR><BR>In 1919 Smillie called for the
nationalisation of the mining industry and Lloyd George set up the
Sankey Commission in response and despite the majority of the members
agreeing to nationalisation, Lloyd George refused to do this and the
30 of 102
mines returned to private ownership.<BR><BR>Smillie was furious and in
1920 the mine owners decided to reduce miners' wages. A national
strike was called by the Industrial Triple Alliance but before it was
started, the railway and transport unions pulled out leaving the
miners to go it alone. Thye strike failed and Smillie was devastated,
resigning his presidency of the MFGB.<BR><BR>He turned to politics and
became MP for Morpeth in 1923 and turned down a cabinet position under
Ramsay MacDonald but became Chairman of the Parliamentary Labour Party
instead. He was widely respected in North America and Europe and was
also appointed to the Committee of Honour of Save the Children. Due to
his intense workload his health failed and in 1929 he resigned as an
MP. He then suffered from a degenerative mental illness and spent much
time convalescing in the Crichton Royal Hospital in Dumfries where he
died in 1940.<BR><BR>Presented as a story seen through the eyes of a
local journalist who interviews Smillie as he lies dying in Dumfries,
this 'factional' narrative reveals the full life story of this major
figure in Britain's trade union and Labour movement.<BR><BR>

The Hollow Drum
Scotland Since The War
Arnold Kemp
‘SINCE THE WAR SCOTLAND HAS been profoundly altered. Its native
tradition of entrepreneurial capitalism has disappeared. Its heavy
industries have rapidly declined. It has become a branch economy
soliciting international investment. Its crowded old cities have
spread themselves into the country dormitories. The grip of the Kirk
has been much weakened. The Conservatives have slumped from a historic
high-water mark in 1955 to their present low ebb. The Nationalists
come and go but Labour's strength seems geological. <BR><BR> For a
hundred years and more Scotland has agitated for some form of home
rule. The cycle has repeated itself at intervals. It elicits promises
and placatory responses from governments. It has produced a steady
increase in administrative devolution. The Grand Committee has been
tarted up more times than Mae West. But still a Scottish parliament
eludes us.’ <BR><BR> <BR><BR>The above paragraphs appeared in 1993 on
the jacket of a book written by one of Scotland’s greatest newspaper
editors, the late Arnold Kemp. The Hollow Drum was his personal
history of the postwar period. He used his experiences as an editor
and journalist as a starting point for discussing themes which he
considered both in their historical context and their modern
implications, in a style that was at once anecdotal and analytical.
<BR><BR> He also attempted to listen more closely to the insistent
beat of the Scottish drum. He suggested that Scotland, which so often
seemed confused and divided and could not muster any collective
political will, had in fact been articulating a reasonable set of
expectations which were well within the gift of the British
state.<BR><BR> This Ebook edition of The Hollow Drum, published some
11 years after Kemp’s premature death allows the reader to reflect on
the state of Scotland prior to the ‘Yes’ vote in 1997 for the
re-convening of the Scottish Parliament and will inform those who seek
more clarity on the issues surrounding Scotland’s referendum vote on
independence in 2014 as to how the nation has changed during that
period. Had Arnold Kemp lived, there is no doubt that he would have
47 of 102
been at the forefront of the debate at this most important of times in
the nation’s history.<BR><BR>

History

Cummoangetaff!

They were all targets and
always came away from a verbal confrontation with Big Aggie worse off
but wiser.

Journalism

Travel and The Great Outdoors
Across Country From Thonon To Trent
By Douglas W Freshfield
This is a true ‘Boys’ Own’ adventure story of how three English
schoolboys spent the summer of 1863 trekking through the Swiss and
Italian Alps before conquering Mont Blanc. It is an utterly unique
journal written by one of that party who would go on to become one of
the great mountain and travel writers of the Victorian era and make a
huge contribution to the Royal Geographical Society and the Alpine
Club. His name was Douglas William Freshfield.<BR><BR>This volume,
which he arranged to have printed privately in 1865, was his first
work of the eight he would eventually write and it is also his rarest
because few know of its existence. As it was privately printed its
circulation was small and it is not listed in any published
bibliography of his known works. Essentially this is Freshfield’s
‘lost’ work.<BR><BR>In the narrative of this unique journal can be
found the beginnings of the style and observational genius that would
serve Freshfield well over the course of his writing career. The
reader is engaged at once with the three young men as they begin their
adventure and is bowled along as an unseen travelling companion
through the high routes and passes, the valleys and gorges and is with
them as they summit on Mont Blanc.<BR><BR>FROM THONON TO TRENT is not
only an engaging and informative record of how privileged young
Englishmen once spent their leisure time but also a rare memoir of a
lifestyle long since gone but still worthy of reminiscence.<BR><BR>

24 pages
of colour images accompany the text.<BR><BR>

Bad Whisky

Enduring Legacy Of Dewars, The
A Company History
By Ian Buxton
The rags to riches story of John Dewar & Sons is probably the most
colourful of any whisky company, largely owing to the remarkable
talents of John Dewar’s two sons, John Alexander Dewar (who finished
as Lord Forteviot) and his brother Thomas (who was created Lord Dewar
of Homestall) – and as such provides a fascinating insight into the
Scotch whisky industry during its formative and most colourful era.
