He later married Patty Loveless and went to work for Bill Lowery’s powerhouse publishing company (Lowery’s company was instrumental in a great many Beach music records). and in a 1989 release by Sammy O’Banion. (Note they each say Promotional - Not for Sale on the left side of the label). Sammy O’Banion remembers Billy Scott for a one-time distribution deal. Later that year, Sammy O’Banion recorded his first record on Delphi 0012 with the Features--”Mistaken Identity” b/w “Something Gotta Be Wrong.” Maybe I should say it was recorded by the Features ++ . Sammy assembled Billy and Barbara Scott and Billy Walker who later joined the Prophets for a few months in 1968, Bob Cline bass, Roy Smith on piano and who also wrote sides A & B, Freddie Williamson, Jimmy Campbell, Tommy Leonard, and John Wilson on guitars, Sammy on vocals, and Emory Gordy Jr. as producer. Both sessions were done in one day at Master Sound Studios following recording sessions with Billy Jo Royal and the Tams. The Features’ record was released in the spring of ‘68 after which Sammy was back in the studio to record Delphi 015, “Laugh it Off,” b/w “Cause It Hurts.” Sammy went on to describe the Prophets’ evolution, “When they got tied up with the big boys they got real strings on their records.” According to Sammy, “Being a The Corbett family owned a cannery in Tabor City featuring Lady Tabor Yams both before and during his entry into the Beach Music business. His wife, Betty Ann Seagers of the prominent Seagers farming family in the South Carolina midlands, was roomates with Shag Hall of Famer Dottie Driver at Converse College, maybe that influenced his journey. He ran the Beach Clubs, two at a time--a block and a half apart--for three years, and started Beach Club Booking in the fall of 1968, and Kaleidoscope productions. Cecil’s business strategy was to buy two weekends and a week from a national recording act/group at a flat rate and then resell them. Thus, the Beach Club could get their bands cheaply. For example, Cecil might pay $5000 for Kenny Rogers and put him at Furman, Chapel Hill, Winthrop and Clemson, each for $1250 a night. Then he’d book Kenny and the First Edition at the Beach Club on the weekends, three nights in a row for $0. Or he might fly a band into Charlotte, play night Larry Presley’s Cellar, then play a college, followed by two nights at the Beach Club, then another college and back to Charlotte. Cecil allowed smaller regional bands to accompany national recording acts. According to Sammy O’Banion, the Prophets were the only band without horns who could generate as much or more excitement than the horn bands. “Jimmy Campbell could play octaves and harmonics on guitar. If you closed your eyes you’d swear they had horns on that stage. That was how real sounding they could make the music with two guitars, bass and drums,” Sammy went on. “Jimmy Campbell’s rhythm guitar playing, to this day, 49 years later, is still the damnedest thing I ever heard. “That’s where their musical magic was. Forsyth street was where Billy and Barbara lived, and the group rehearsed there in the beginning, Jimmy Campbell’s daddy sang on cruise ships as he was growing up, which must have influenced his musical inclinations. It also contributed to their beautiful home in Augusta. In the good years the Prophets rehearsed at Jimmy’s daddy’s house. As time passed, though, some quirky personality traits surfaced, hot hot and Billy was a smooth dancer, great performer, and great singer. When he and Barbara came out on stage together it was absolutely sensuous.” “It’s sad but true, Billy Scott should have been a national star, he was that good. He was one of those guys who just fell through the cracks. It should have happened, it just didn’t.” “He had the talent, body, looks, charisma. Every accolade he’s ever received he deserved.” Thinking back over his career, Sammy added, “Until I was 35 I used to listen to two records before I went on stage. I’d listen and imagine how Jackie Wilson performed ‘Since You Showed Me How to Be Happy’ and how Billy Scott performed ‘I Got the Fever.’ By the time I finished I felt like I’d taken drugs, gotten pumped, like a hit of speed.” “Tommy had a big inferiority com- the drummer just played his ass off.
