July 23, 1965, Marietta Daily Journal, Marietta, GA Just to set the record straight, we’re going to revisit the Billy Scott story in the November 1979 It Will Stand magazine, written by the late Jerry McElveen. Both IWS and Greg Sammy O’Banion remembers Billy Scott Hayne’s 2006 Heeey Baby Days of Beach Music stated that McElveen was the manager of the Beach Club at Myrtle Beach. Our information from the man who managed the Coachman and IV Club from 19671970 then ran the Beach Club from 1970 to 1971 is that Mr. McElveen never managed the Beach Club, but was indirectly connected with it. McElveen came from Bomar Productions out of Eastern North Carolina and became a senior booking agent at Beach Club Booking along May’s drugstore. Howard Eaton’s wife was the secretary. (More about Ward May and Howard Eaton in future issues). Wilson ran the Coachman 1967-68-69-70 (his mother lived across the street from the Crows in McColl, SC who owned the Coachman). Holly Singletary, Sammy O’Banion, Linda Little Howard graduated from UNC Pembroke in May 1970 and moved After the summer of ‘71 the Beach Club booking office moved to Lydia, SC between Hartsville and Bishopville. After Cecil Corbett’s house was completed in Bishopville, they moved their office to Camden. Following a September 1986 bankruptcy, Wilson became part of Cellar Door Productions which included Kathy Moore in Virginia Beach. Wilson ran the Cellar Door office our of Columbia for a time, eventually Cellar Door was acquired by Clear Channel Entertainment Productions. ------------------Jerry McElveen moved to FloThis 1969 flyer shows Jerry McElveen as an entertainment-sales agent of Bowmar Productions. We double checked all this with Wilson Howard who followed Bunky Odom at the Coachman & IV Club in 1967 after Bunky departed Laurinburg and formed Norca Talent Inc. in Burlington on top of Ward quickly to take over the reins for Cecil and Charlie Corbett in Myrtle Beach. Howard ran the Beach Club for the next 14 months, then it was leased to Dallas Sowell June 1, 1971. That same year Beach Club Promotions incorporated as a concert promotion company. rence, SC when the Beach Club was leased to Sowell where McElveen later managed the Fox’s Tail and the Thunderbird, handling all their entertainment needs. McElveen stated that a producer at a studio in Columbia, SC who was using Billy and Barbara Pendleton (later Scott) for backup vocals invited his friend Tommy Witcher to come in and hear them in June 1965. Volume 1 No. 30 3 Sammy O’Banion remembers Billy Scott Another important player in the Billy Scott saga. According to this August 15, 1965 story in the Augusta Chronicle-Herald, college student Roy Smith was on his way. The twenty-two year old musician had just Georgia Prophets 1965 signed a five year contracdt with a recording company in Nashville. Roy said he’d stumbled into music with a drumset and started his first group at 13 (1956), but he couldn’t remember their name. His mother bought him a guitar at 16. Roy had been singing for six years and recording for four, although only one song, “Love You So Much,” had been distributed nationally. At the time, “Devil or Angel” was Roy’s favorite song, but he claimed Soul music as his favorite kind of music, listing Chuck Jackson, Jackie Wilson, Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, the Righteous Brothers, Dionne Warwick, Timi Yuro and Barbara Streisand (hey! I’m just telling what the story said). The story goes on the state that roy is accompanied by the “Blues Boys,” Tommy Witcher on bass and David Benson on drums. At the time he was calling the whole group the Cardinals. Roy was born in Lynchburg, Virginia April 12, 1943. He liked sports, swimming, and dancing. *** 4 Dancing On the Edge News Walter Stanley Peter Pendleton Barbara Pendleton Freddie Williamson Jimmy Campbell Tommy Witcher Sammy O’Banion remembers Billy Scott According to McElveen they uly and play ed started played star ted rrehearsing ehearsing in JJuly their first gig as the Scottsmen for $75 at the Augusta Medical College of G Gee o r g i a . Sammy O’Banion’s first record Delphi records was a co-op between Tommy Witcher and Roy Smith. Its name was a combination of Tommy’s daughter’s Del, Dell, or Dale and the Phi perhaps represented one of Roy’s children. It was put together by a Jewish fellow from New York who sometimes acted as Roy’s manager. A west coast group called California Earthquake called on Roy Smith to do the vocals. It was on a national label, but no marketing. At first they were known as the Square Root of 49. Northern Soul collectors pay more for this Delphi record than any other. 6 Dancing On the Edge News Volume 1 No. 30 7 Sammy O’Banion remembers Billy Scott August 25, 1967 -- WKYB Hemingway, SC was serious about competing with Tiger Radio when it came to Beach Music. This is the FIRST survey we’ve found so far with a Prophets’ song listed, # 33 “Don’t You Think It’s Time.” In addition, note Brenton Wood’s “Gimme Little Sign” at 3, Robert Knight’s “Everlasting Love” at 6, the Swinging Medallions at #9, the Platters’ super hit “Washed Ashore” at 14, the Tams at 15, Temptations at 17, Jay and the Techniques at 18, Clifford Curry at 21, Jackie Wilson at 25, Booker T. & the M.G.s at 26, Martha & the Vandellas at 31, the Tempests from Charlotte at 34, Jimmy Jones version of the Showmen’s “39-21-40 Shape (the accurate title given to the song by General Johnson)” at 35, and Chris Bartley at # 37. Although the Prophets made the WKYB Hemingway charts in August 1967, they were too late and too little known to make that season’s Coachman and IV itinerary which was loaded with Burlington and Columbia bands. 8 Dancing On the Edge News Sammy O’Banion remembers Billy Scott November 12, 1967, Augusta Chronicle Herald ent story -- that Tommy found Billy and Barbara performing with an organist at a black bowling alley on Georgia Prophets 1967 Billy Scott Barbara Scott Freddie Hutchinson (it says Hutchinson in the picture above, but it’s got to be Williamson) Walter Stanley Jimmy Campbell Tommy Witcher East Gwinnet Street in the East Boundary area down by the old fairgrounds. A followup story on November 12th stated a teenager was overheard to say, “it’s not whether the Prophets are good enough to play with the Augusta symphony, it’s whether the symphony is good enough to play with the Prophets.” A November 19th story described Billy as a vocalist and dancer for the Prophets! These stories referred to the Prophets as playing ‘rhythm and blues’ or ‘soul’ music. Volume 1 No. 30 9 Sammy O’Banion remembers Billy Scott “if you’ll learn these songs you’ll probably be able to perform these for the rest of your life.” Some of the songs included: Jerry Butler “Lost” “Only the Strong Survive” “Never Gonna Give You Up” “Dream Merchant” “Moody Woman” Jackie Wilson“ “I Get the Sweetest Feeling” “Higher and Higher” “Lonely Teardrops” “Since You Showed Me (How to Be Happy)” “For Once In My Life” “Kidnapper” “Ain’t No Big Thing” Sammy knew them all except “Lost.” Tommy insisted he learn the song. The Prophets recorded “Talk Don’t Bother Me” on Delphi in the spring of 1966 which was subsequently picked up by Jubilee, a much larger national record label (at November 19, 1967 the Prophets prepare for a Youth concert--their first full-page ad least, it had national distribution).
