--Celebrating 35 Years of Fantastic Shakers--
THE FANTASTIC SHAKERS ~
KHP records and Little Peddler Productions have pulled out all the stops
in celebration of the Fantastic Shakers 35th Year (and Bo Schronce’s 50th
as an entertainer).
To celebrate, a new 3-CD set with
several very hard to find Shakers’
tunes as well as a brand new book
(pictured on the front cover of this
issue of Dancing On the Edge News).
The CD is great for those songs
you may have missed, and the book
will certainly introduce to a great
deal you never knew about Bo’s or
any of the Fantastic Shakers’ histories. They’re both bound to be the
talk of Beach Music for months to
come.
There have already been a few
kick-off parties, and the momentum
is still mounting.
The next super Fantastic Shakers
event will be September 16th, Fun
Monday at North Myrtle Beach with
a book signing starring the Fantastic
Shakers (after they perform in the
Street Festival that afternoon).
There’ll be an additional book
signing on Friday, September 20th
at the Spanish Galleon, followed by
a good, old-fashioned celebrity roast.
To keep up with all the special
events already planned and those
that will be added in coming weeks,

This summer was my first encounter
with Big Ron at a street dance in
downtown Winston Salem. He’s fun,
he’s funny, writes a lot of his own
originals, and can throw down a
shuffle blues to satisfy the most
amped-up dancers, (Oh, you ‘all

That was this summer.)
The fellow sitting right behind me
had travelled up from Ft. Mill, SC
just to see Ron. He and some friends
are planning to hire him for a big
party this fall and he wanted a preview.
Everyone loves what appears to be
his signature song, “For Yourself (Going for Myself ).”
The King Bees took the stage,
along with their long-time friend,
saxophonist Mike Kincaid. As usual,
they threw down that King Bees
sound, along with some new tunes
year.
This year started
with a deluge 30 minutes before showtime.
The only other
shower was about two
and a half hours into
the concert.
I was delighted to
see Big Ron Hunter
opening the show.

Rather than looking for someone to book them,
Gtown Sound likes to create their own events. Although they get bookings, they like to do their
bigger events themselves because they have
a business model in which they can use
three groups and still create an amazingly reasonable ticket price.
Last club they played had
700 seats and they sold them
all in advance. All their
events have been sold out.
Gtown Sound is looking
for other bands and entertainers from the area that
would like to participate
and join with them for a
concert in their community.
Ron Ownby’s original
vision has become a movement, a Rhythm and Blues
Revival. ***

Christine can also be heard on Modern Rock 98.7 FM
as co-host of the morning show all over Eastern North
Carolina as well as half the duet with Guy Phillips playing several venues in and out of Southport.
She’s also part of a quartet with Albert. ***
Albert Rogers took his bass to The Clubhouse studio
in Rhinebeck, NY where other noteworthies record such
as George Clinton, Dr. John, Hall and Oates, Joan Jett,
Amy Fairchild, Al DiMeola, Marshall Crenshaw, Bootsy
Collins, Linda Ronstadt, Natalie Merchant, and the
Brian Setzer Orchestra, to name a few.
If you’ve ever attended a Coastline Band show and
wished you could hear more of Albert, this is the place
to fulfill your fantasy.
Until you get here, let me titillate you with some of
the selections: there are two Taj Mahals, a John Fogerty,
Van Morrison, Michael McDonald, Wilson Pickett, Gary
Nicholson and Vince Gill, and Bill Withers. Panoramic
range, like the view from Albert’s Southport looking to
where the fishing boats head out to sea.
Albert’s band includes Jim Weider and Randy
Ciarlante from The Band and the Levon Helm Band,
Dan McKinney formerly with the Honky Tonk Gurus,
and Coastline’s Casey Meyer.
Remember Robbie Dupree with “Steal Away” in
1980. He shows another side of his talents on harmonica
on the two Taj Mahal tunes here.
Glen Tippet’s got sax on “I’m Not Tired” and “Tupelo Honey,” Andy King vocalizes on “Sweet Thang,”
providing trumpet on “I’m Not Tired” and “He Drinks
Tequila.”
Speaking of which, Albert is joined by foxy-soundin’
singer, Christine Martinez on this tune. They have as
rollickin’ a good time as Sammy Kershaw and Lorrie
Morgan had the first time around with “....Tequila.”
Good News, we can all stop asking, ‘when is the Band
of Oz putting out another CD?’
Good News # 2: this one is comprised of at least
90% inspiration. Live By Request includes many of their
live performance favorites.
“The Righteous Brothers Medley” may top that list
for many. Others will love the “Chairmen of the Board
Medley,” still others will be glad to find “Hold Back the
Night,” “Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel,” “Back That
Thang Up,” “Rhythm,” and I could just go ahead and
list them all.
There are two others I must mention: “In Between
Disasters” was barely out by Uncle Kracker when the Oz
boys jumped on it, and rightly so.
I think the BOOz and Jerry West must have been
inspired when they laid down the track for “Your Place
or Mine” I certainly loved the original in the early 90s
but Jerry and the fellas have far exceeded that version
with their extended live treatment of a that great dance
song.
Ok, Ok, they were also brilliant for putting “Don’t
Stop Believing” on this CD. That song just seems to be
getting stronger every year. ***

Rick Strickland’s new CD, Lucky, is packed with
smooth steppers, ballads, and an uptempo stomper or
two like never before.
Although Rick doesn’t appear to be an awards chaser
(he’s always been so humble at the Carolina Beach Music Awards when he wins), but I wonder if he’s considered how many awards this single CD could garner?
This year Rick and his band are once again offering a
special concert for their fans at the Avista hotel at North
Myrtle Beach on Saturday September 14th from 6 to 9
pm, free admission.
There are some very welcome surprises here:
New tunes from:
Craig Woolard, Terri Gore, Danny & the Juniors, Susan Trexler, the Legends of Beach, Jay Proctor, Russell
Thompkins Jr., and the Legendary Dukes.
Jackie Gore and the Original Members returned to
the studio to bring “I Love Beach Music” up to date.
The Royal Drifters most recent chart topper is here as is
Jackie Gore and the Original Members’ “My Love Is Your
Love.”
This CD represents our first encounter with Mitty
and the Followers and the bonus track from the Legendary Dukes. Like it’s namesake, this CD should be
around for quite some time. ***
KHP Music has kicked out another collection destined to make inroads into the charts and on the dance
floors for months to come.
They’ve remixed Angel Rissoff ’s “Fine Wine” -- it’s
hotter and more fun to dance to.
The 4 Jacks’ “Bobcat Woman” is certain to make it
onto any dance floor it encounters. There’s new music
from Rhonda McDaniel, Gary Lowder, the Entertainers, a remix of Danny Woods’ latest, the Martin Davis
Band, Classic Soul, Paul Craver, and Roy C.
Hey, Ron Moody’s back with another R&B tune from
Richmond.
Look for Earl Dawkins and the Entertainers and Gary
Lowder’s “Hold On,” one of my favorite old Santana
tunes. ***
