Convention 2008
Convention 2008 “All your children shall be taught by the Lord, and great shall be the peace of your children.” —Isaiah 54:13 CHAP CHAP Convention Program Discipling Our Families 22nd Annual CHAP Homeschool Convention May 9 – 10, 2008 Friday, 9:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.; Saturday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. The vendor hall will not be open for shopping during the pre-convention session, Friday, 8:30–9:30 a.m. About CHAP—Serving Homeschoolers in Pennsylvania Since 1986. CHAP Statement of Faith The Bible is the inspired and infallible Word of God and constitutes His completed and final revelation to man. The Bible, in its original autographs, is without error in whole and in part. God has existed from all eternity in three persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Jesus Christ was God in human flesh being fully God and fully man, except without sin. All men are in violation of God’s righteous requirements and His holy character both by nature and act, and are therefore under His wrath and just condemnation. The central purpose of the coming of Jesus Christ was to pay the penalty for man’s sin through His substitutionary atoning death on the cross, the successful accomplishment of which was attested to by His subsequent visible, bodily resurrection so that we can enter into an intimate, personal relationship with Him and know the love, forgiveness, and mercy of God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Salvation is offered as a gift, free to the sinner. This gift must be responded to by individual faith, not trusting in any personal works whatsoever, but in the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ alone. CHAP Mission Statement CHAP, the Christian Homeschool Association of Pennsylvania, exists to support and encourage home educators. It is a distinctly Christian organization with a statement of faith. CHAP seeks to nurture education that is Christian, and supports education that is in harmony with Judeo-Christian principles. CHAP Goals • To foster homeschooling by educating political leaders on the local, state, and federal levels. • To inform and educate the general public on the benefits of homeschooling. • To foster homeschooling in local churches. • To strengthen and equip home educators. • To inform current and potential homeschoolers of regulations which affect them. • To strengthen and equip support groups and their leaders. CHAP Foundation For some years now, members of the Christian Homeschool Association of Pennsylvania (CHAP) board have felt a desire to have an outreach to home educators in times of need. This desire was brought into sharper focus when the Home School Legal Defense Association established the Homeschool Foundation as a charitable arm of the HSLDA. In order to facilitate such an outreach by CHAP, the board has established a sister organization called the CHAP Foundation. It is incorporated in Pennsylvania as a not-for-profit corporation. The Foundation received its IRS certification as a 501 c3 corporation allowing us to issue tax deductible receipts to donors. If you would like to partner with CHAP in helping other homeschoolers who are in a time of need, you can send your tax-deductible donation to the CHAP Foundation: CHAP Foundation 231 North Chestnut Street Palmyra, PA 17078 CHAP 231 North Chestnut Street Palmyra, PA 17078 717-838-0980 www.CHAPonline.com Membership in CHAP If you choose to join CHAP as a member, several important things happen. The most important is that you will be partnering with other Pennsylvania homeschoolers to advance the cause of homeschooling. You will also receive several financial benefits. The membership fee is $25/yr. This membership fee will give you at least the following benefits: •O ne year subscription to CHAP Magazine, a quarterly publication. • $10 discount on your family’s admission to the convention. • $20 discount on the cost of HSLDA membership. • Other benefits as they become available. Frequently Asked Questions 1. What is a CHAP member versus a CHAP affiliate? A CHAP member is a family who has paid the $25 membership fee, receives the CHAP membership card, and receives the benefits listed below. A CHAP affiliate is a family who is in our database due to having attended the convention or simply contacted our office for information and shared their contact information with us. Check our website for a current list of member benefits. CHAP members are affiliates as well, and both receive the following benefits throughout the year: • CHAP Chatter, a periodic newsletter with updates on important home education issues and an interesting article or two. • Convention registration postcard reminder. • Monthly e-newsletter (email based). • E-Alerts regarding political issues related to homeschooling that may need action (email based). • Periodic CHAP announcements (email based). • CHAP bookstore membership that gives CHAP members and affiliates the same discount (except CHAP members who are also HSLDA members get even more—see details below). 2. What are the CHAP member benefits? In addition to the affiliate benefits, CHAP members receive the following benefits for a year: • $10 off the admission fee of the first attendee registered for the annual CHAP Convention. • Subscription to the CHAP Magazine, a full-color publication with helpful and interesting articles, issued four times in the year. • Use of the membership card for a homeschooling discount at Borders bookstore (10% off all purchases related to items used in one’s homeschool). • $4 discount off a year’s subscription to Homeschooling Today. • $20 discount off an HSLDA membership. • The opportunity to be more politically involved. CHAP members are more able to influence our state in the political realm. 501C4 groups that have membership are allowed to support and work for given candidates with individuals on their member list. Hopefully this will make us a more effective advocate for issues important to Christian homeschoolers. • The opportunity to partner with other Pennsylvania homeschoolers in advancing the cause of homeschooling in general. • Unknown benefits that will arise during the year. 3. How do I sign up to be a CHAP member? A family can sign up at any time of the year with one of the following procedures. Send a note requesting CHAP membership and the $25 membership fee to the CHAP office. Currently, the membership will need to be renewed by contacting the CHAP office on the anniversary date one year from joining. A family will get all the benefits, including the discount on the next convention. Once registration for the upcoming convention begins in late January or early February, a family can sign up or renew their CHAP membership when they register for the convention. The membership will become active the first day of the upcoming convention and last a whole year through the day before the next convention. One membership card per family will be picked up at the convention with the wristbands. 4. How does membership relate to the new CHAP online bookstore? One of our goals is to support our vendors, so we encourage you to chat with them this weekend, and give them the honor due by purchasing your products from them since they have served you with their expertise. There are many excellent reasons to purchase at the convention: you can handle and see what you are buying, ask the “experts” for their advice regarding curriculum and homeschooling issues, avoid shipping costs, take your items home with you, make it worth the vendors’ time and effort to offer their services at the convention, and enable CHAP to afford the expense of bringing the convention to central Pennsylvania. Table of Contents 1 About CHAP.............................................................1 If you are unable to find what you want at the convention and for needs throughout the year, take a look at our new bookstore. Many of our vendors do, or will eventually, take part in it as well, so when they have returned home, you can help them by purchasing after the convention season. Workshop Speakers.................................................4 Table of Contents For after-convention shopping, using our bookstore also assists home education across the nation. CHAP, similar organizations in other states, the National Alliance for Christian Home Education Leadership, and HSLDA, all receive a small percentage of the sales generated with the goal of growing homeschooling in our nation and world. After a year delay, we finally have a CHAP bookstore, in conjunction with GPA and HSLDA. The prices are competitive with other online bookstores for any non-member shopper and even better discounts are available for CHAP bookstore members (see below) and HSLDA members. Last year our plan was that CHAP members would receive a greater discount in the bookstore than CHAP affiliates, and we stated that this would be a CHAP membership benefit. Due to many unforeseen circumstances and development delays, the bookstore establishment took much longer than we anticipated. As you may recall, we issued a coupon in one of our magazines for members to receive a CD of their choice at the convention to help compensate for this delay. (The actual coupon must be presented and it is redeemable at the convention only.) However, the benefits of current and past CHAP membership is valued at much more than the membership fee, as you can see above. The cost of the magazine and the HSLDA membership alone is worth at least $25, other benefits not withstanding. Convention Information..........................................2 Convention Ins and Outs.........................................3 Special Guest Speakers............................................4 Speakers’ Contact Information..............................7 Workshops Descriptions..........................................8 Teen Track..............................................................15 Farm Show Map.....................................................17 Vendor Hall Map....................................................18 Vendor Listings: By Booth Assignment..........................................20 By Category.........................................................21 Alphabetical With Booth Assignment...............23 Alphabetical With Contact Information...........24 New at CHAP..........................................................32 Audio Recording Order Form..............................32 Convention Survey.................................................35 Workshop Schedule...............................Back Cover Since this is so, and CHAP members were and are still gaining more benefits than affiliates, we decided to open the bookstore to a wider market. As we worked out the final details for the bookstore, it became apparent that everyone involved would benefit more if the bookstore had it’s own membership and that it be as inclusive as possible. Even a non-affiliate person may purchase from the bookstore, but with a less discount. Thus, membership for the bookstore is different than the CHAP membership. All CHAP affiliates (which includes CHAP members) as defined above are automatically considered members of the CHAP bookstore and are eligible for the discount. Check it out at www.gpasmartstore.com. 5. How Is Membership in CHAP Related to the HSLDA Discount? Membership is for individuals; affiliation is for support groups, co-ops, or non-members associated with CHAP. Non-CHAP members are referred to as affiliates. Membership is $25. Support group affiliation is free and requires the support group leader registering the support group or co-op. The support group or co-op leader can do this online. A person can qualify for the HSLDA discount as a member of an affiliated support group or co-op with CHAP. There are now two ways to get the HSLDA discount. You can qualify for the HSLDA discount by being a member of CHAP or by being a member of a CHAP affiliated support group or co-op. Plan Ahead... The 2009 CHAP Convention registration will open January 31. New For 2009 • No registration brochures will be mailed unless requested. • A postcard reminder will be mailed to those in the database. • In 2008 over 75% of the preregistrations were done online. • We can save $10,000 by not mailing the registration brochure and that will help to waylay the cost increases that we have found in all areas. 2 What’s New This Year? Exposing A Trojan Horse Convention Information Tracks In an effort to help homeschool families, CHAP has formulated several tracks in the workshop schedule which focus on special areas: The Getting Started Track is especially geared toward new homeschoolers even though some of the topics may be of interest to experienced homeschoolers, too. In this track you can learn about how to comply with Pennsylvania’s homeschool law, keeping lesson plans that help you, learning styles so you can help your child learn, teaching reading, and how to homeschool with toddlers under foot. The Homeschooling Thru Graduation Track is designed to help homeschool parents guide right up to the child’s graduation. Topics will cover preparing transcripts, courses to prepare for college, advance placement courses, preparing for the marketplace, preparing for the home, what happens after high school, and one homeschool graduate’s view of what worked. For homeschool leaders, there is the yearly Support Group Leaders’ Town Hall Meeting where leaders can share ideas. We ask that support group leaders stop at the CHAP booth (109–110) to pre-register for this meeting, as light refreshments will be served. New this year, following the town hall meeting, there are two workshop sessions geared toward the needs of homeschool leaders: tips and “tipfalls” of leadership and creating a homeschool co-op. New Room We do not have the EH1 room this year and are using the Equine Barn instead. Lunch in the Cafeteria Don’t forget! The cafeteria is closer this year, in the Equine Barn. Vendor Drawings Several vendors have agreed to do prize drawings at their booths. If you sign up for one of these, you will hear an announcement at some point during the convention, but only when there are no workshops in progress. Vendors set their own drawing time and bring a paper to the speaker booth with the name of their booth and the winner of the prize. The speaker booth volunteer will announce the winner as soon as it is possible. Discipling Our Families “All your children shall be taught by the Lord, and great shall be the peace of your children.” —Isaiah 54:13 The National Alliance of Christian Home Education Leadership is announcing the release of the DVD Exposing a Trojan Horse, which is an exposé of governmentfunded, public-school-at-home programs recruiting home educators in many states. Encouraged by the overwhelming support of those Alliance members in attendance at the conference in Glorieta, New Mexico, the Alliance board authorized the production of this DVD. As you know, public-school-at-home and government-funded programs for homeschoolers often target home educators to try to “bring them back” into the government system. The DVD explores the implications of participation in government-funded homeschool programs and their impact on both families’ lives and the homeschool movement in general. Exposing a Trojan Horse presents families with thought provoking interviews with Christian home educators. This 30-minute documentary can be used at support group leadership training events, support group meetings, and with individual families. Copies are on sale for $10.00 at the CHAP booth or may be ordered through our website: www.CHAPonline.com. Mailorder cost is $10.00 plus $2.50 shipping. Take some time during the convention to watch this most interesting and informative DVD, in the Equine Arena during lunch at 1:00 p.m. on Friday or 12:00 noon on Saturday. You can also see a continuous loop of the DVD at the CHAP booth. Recycling Program CHAP would like to thank you for bringing your old ink cartridges in for collection. Please place the cartridges in the cardboard collection box labeled ink toner and we’ll take it from there. CHAP has discontinued the current recycling program to raise funds that support the work of the CHAP Foundation. We will update our associates of any change in this area as we seek to find a program that more closely matches CHAP’s fundraising needs. CHAP Needs You Next Year! The CHAP Convention needs you to volunteer. We require many volunteers to run the convention. We desire and need your help to make the convention a success. The benefits of volunteering include: • An opportunity to serve fellow homeschoolers. • Tuition rebate equal to the tuition of each volunteer. • Early bird shopping, 8:00 – 9:30 a.m. on Friday. (Imagine a chance to shop with only three hundred other people.) • Online orientation, so no early morning orientation meeting to attend. In order to volunteer, you must go to our website: www.CHAPonline.com. Volunteering can only take place online. Do not mail in the registration if you are volunteering. You must register online. After filling out the registration form, you will be given a choice of volunteer jobs from which to choose. You will know immediately if you received your choice. We do online volunteer orientation as well, so we can expand the actual convention time for everyone. His life goal is to grow and love the Lord with all his heart, soul, mind, and strength, and to share through speaking, mentorship, and example. Douglas Rothgaber has been happily married to his wife, Nada, for almost thirty-five years. God really changed their lives when their son came along twenty-four years ago. Both were trained and worked as professional educators and look what God did! Together they home educated their now graduated son, Joshua, in rural Grantville, Pennsylvania. Doug is a graduate of Penn State University, where he had the privilege of playing football under the legendary JoePa and was instrumental in starting the first ever Penn State Ice Hockey Club, which to this day continues to be a formidable force in national collegiate club ice hockey programs. Since coming onto the CHAP board fourteen years ago, Doug has served as the past coordinator of the convention registration, as the past treasurer, and has spent numerous work vacation days on Capitol Hill on behalf of homeschoolers. Doug and Nada have always had a passion for education outside the box of the public school system. They have a heart for the homeschool family which is discipling their children as God directs. When Doug and Nada Rothgaber first heard about homeschooling, they thought it would never work. Nada had been educated in both private and public schools and did both her undergraduate and graduate work at Penn State University. Before “coming home” to care for and homeschool their son, Nada taught for thirteen years in both the public schools and at the college level. The Rothgabers have one son, Joshua, a homeschool graduate. He is now twenty-four years old. Doug and Nada have served on the board of the Christian Homeschool Association of Pennsylvania (CHAP) for fourteen years. Nada served as the CHAP board secretary for many years and as the CHAP Convention speaker chairman. Many times, Nada has felt like the Biblical Aaron as she serves with her husband in the legislative realm, which is living proof that God can use an unwilling servant in areas they don’t like and feel unqualified! Doug and Nada have always had a passion for education outside the box of the public school system. They have a heart for the homeschool family which is discipling their children as God directs. Nada’s many topics include ones on educating children who don’t learn in the typical school methods, the future of home education and the forces going to battle with home education, how to be an influence in your legislature, and how to home educate just one child. As a mother of eleven children (including one with special needs), Mary Sayre has a total of eighty-nine child-years of homeschooling experience. Needless to say, she has a wealth of practical information to share! Before becoming a stay-at-home mom with the birth of her first child, she worked as a registered nurse. This session will explore ways we can implement these practical tools in our homes. Friday, 10:00 – 10:45 a.m. Bill Jack Jack Theist Meets Dr. Secular: The Friend With the Secular Mind (Colossians 2:8) Equine Arena Train your students to discern worldviews and to understand their impact on every aspect of our culture. We will analyze the impact of worldviews on our culture through interviews with those who hold opposing worldviews. Great opportunity to learn practical tools to learn how to reach non-Christians and to confront the culture with the Truth. Julie Hiramine Setting a Paradigm for Purity Equine Barn A Biblical, age-appropriate approach to sex education for homeschoolers. In this workshop parents of elementary and middle school children will learn what to talk about with their kids at every stage of development. This workshop includes information on how to set the paradigm for purity and courtship beginning in preschool. We will also discuss media discernment, how to give “the talk,” and how parents can begin now to open up the lines of communication with their children to pave the way for honesty and openness during adolescence. Diane Kummer Homeschooling Thru High School: Turning the Impossible Trek Into an Enjoyable Journey H EH2 Home School Legal Defense Association’s Homeschooling Thru High School program was born out of a desire to help parents continue homeschooling throughout the high school years. The high school section on HSLDA’s website provides tons of valuable information for those who are just thinking about high school or who are already immersed in the high school years. We’ll take you on a tour of the web pages and give you an overview of the “You Can Do It,” “Before High School,” “During High School,” and “After High School” sections. HSLDA is with you from the first days of homeschooling right through graduation day! Karen Stobaugh Elementary Foundations For a Lifetime of Learning EH3 Often too much dependency on curriculum in the early years fills our children up with knowledge that is most often forgotten later. Understanding how the brain functions, and how to build a solid foundation for a lifetime of learning is the goal of this workshop. Carol Barnier Help! I Fell off My Lesson Plan! _ EH4 When things don’t go as planned, when no one can seem to focus on their spelling, when the kids (and you) need an off day, what can you do? A day away from the lesson plan doesn’t have to mean learning is over. Come learn lots of ideas for an atypical day that are fun, memorable, and packed with learning. Friday, 11:00 – 11:45 a.m. Voddie Baucham How to Disciple Your Child Equine Arena The book of 2 Timothy is a masterpiece that traces the mentor/protégé relationship. These principles offer insight into the discipleship relationship that God has established for us and our children. Chris Hogan Becoming Somebody or Containing Someone Equine Barn This presentation reveals the three pitfalls every parent encounters on the road to becoming somebody: (1) demanding, (2) judging, and (3) controlling. Identify and escape these pitfalls by taking a journey to the heart. You will discover the four types of parents and which ones children consider credible and are willing to follow. Chris points you to the three priorities a parent cannot fail to do or all other efforts in raising a Godly generation will be rendered inconsequential. Chris’s next three workshops build on these three priorities. Donnie Rosie Three Pillars That Give Freedom and Direction in Guy-Girl Relationships H EH2 Ideas for guiding young adult relationships abound, but this session will focus on the simple truths presented in scripture. It is Donnie’s desire that you will walk away refreshed and strengthened by a clear and simple presentation of Truth. This will be a down-to-earth, personal, and practical session that he hopes you will enjoy. This is a must attend for parents and their young adults presented by Donnie Rosie, aged twenty-six, staff member at Miracle Mountain Ranch and assistant to Dr. Lew Sterrett. Todd Wilson Help! I’m Married to a Homeschooling Mom EH3 It’s a fact! The only thing tougher than being a homeschooling mom is...being married to a homeschooling mom! Dad, your wife needs your help. Come join Todd as we discuss how to support and assist our wives in the homeschooling journey. We’ll also do a lot of laughing, as he encourages men to be encouragers of their homeschooling wives. Bruce Eagleson You Can Do It! (Getting Started Homeschooling) _ EH4 Dr. Eagleson draws on his twenty-two years of homeschooling and twelve years on the CHAP board to introduce the topic of getting started in homeschooling. A summary of the research into home education is presented. Curriculum, schedules, and record keeping will be covered. Dr. Eagleson will take questions from the floor, both during and after the presentation. H Homeschooling Thru Graduation Track _ Getting Started Track F Especially for Support Group Leaders 9 Friday, 12:00 noon – 12:45 p.m. Identifying If Your Child Has a Learning Glitch Equine Arena This is for your “puzzling child.” A child may be a reluctant learner for several reasons: (1) maturity, (2) information processing block (visual, auditory, writing), (3) attention/focusing issues, and (4) a right brain learner using a left brain curriculum. If you knew what the problem was, you would know how to help this child. It is not difficult. There are only four “learning gates.” When all four of these gates are working well, then learning is easy. When one or more of them is blocked, learning is much more work. This workshop will help you find out why your smart child is having to work so hard to learn. It doesn’t have to be so hard! Brain Ray The Power of Homeschool Research: What It Tells Us and How to Use It Equine Barn Dr. Ray provides a brief summary of homeschool research to date and explains current projects and trends. He explains that scholarly writing and research are powerful tools used by both friends and foes of parent-led education, that they should be guided by clear goals and theory that are based on sound values, and suggests where they should be headed. Diane Kummer Developing a Plan for High School: Sample Four-Year Plans H EH2 How do you plan a program for your high school homeschooler? What subjects do you teach and when? Do you follow a basic high school plan, a general college preparation plan, or a rigorous college preparation plan? How do you evaluate credits or determine grades for a course? What about creating a transcript and diploma? If you are just beginning to think about homeschooling during the high school years, this seminar will help you organize your thoughts and begin laying the groundwork for a viable four-year plan. Jim Stobaugh Teaching Composition to the Elementary and High School Student EH3 To whatever our children are called for such a time as this, they need to know how to write. Writing is the quintessential skill for young people preparing to be twenty-first century apologists. This workshop is an overview of the goals and objectives of writing from pre-k to college. The participant will hear that Dr. Stobaugh believes that the nurture of the heart is as important as the teaching of writing skills. Nada Rothgaber The Nitty Gritty of Homeschooling in PA _ EH4 Journey down the path of answering “what I must do when” or otherwise known as meeting the requirements of homeschooling in Pennsylvania. Nada will also give hints and tips on types of curriculum, keeping records, organizing the home and the day, educational field trips, and more! Friday, 2:00 – 2:45 p.m. Bill Jack Simple Tools for Brain Surgery (2 Corinthians 10:5) Equine Arena Non-Christians seem to have the advantage in our culture. We, as Christians, are sometimes intimidated by or even afraid to talk with many atheists, new-agers, evolutionists, and other wizards. Too often, we fear we won’t have answers to their tough questions. Be encouraged. Learn four killer questions that will help to destroy the wizards’ secular thinking that is encasing the minds of friends, relatives, and others. Learn to destroy the wizards’ sloppy, secular arguments without destroying the person. Chris Hogan Becoming a Credible Messenger Equine Barn The first priority that a parent cannot fail to do is become a credible messenger who is person-centered in Christ Jesus. A parent’s goal is to be able to say as Jesus did, “I have finished the work which Thou gavest Me to do...I have manifested Thy name unto the men [family] which thou gavest Me” (John 17:4, 6). You will learn how to teach children the practical skills of hearing God’s voice through the Scriptures. You will discover how to credibly answer one of a child’s core questions, “Does God delight in me?” by affirming God’s answer through a spoken blessing. Diane Kummer Avoiding Transcript Trauma: Triage for High School Records and Documentation H EH2 Why is documentation of high school coursework important? Keeping good records does not need to be time-consuming or burdensome; it will actually save you time and effort when creating your child’s transcript. Learn about the resources that are available to you as you track your student’s progress through high school. Brian Ray When a Free Lunch Isn’t Free: Public School Homeschool Programs EH3 Lures abound to sidetrack homeschooling parents. One is the fast-growing, nationwide promise of “free,” state-run, “home” school programs to “help” you educate your children. Dr. Ray will challenge you to consider the paramount importance of who should be in authority over what is taught to the minds and hearts of children. Related to tax-funded programs, there are: (1) subtle and negative, practical consequences of enrolling your children in them, (2) serious problems from the perspective of a liberty-loving republic such as the United States, and (3) contradictions to a Biblical worldview that demands parents and private associations be the main educators of children. Dr. Ray is convinced this is one of the most urgent issues that homeschoolers should grapple with during the next several years. Carol Barnier What Are You Thinking? Learning Styles and Beyond _ EH4 This talk is big on the beyond. So often, learning style materials pour all their time and energy into finding the right label for your child’s learning style. (“Yes, I now know he’s a right brained, global, sub-dominant, argyle-wearing, rational wombat...but...how do I teach him to spell?”) And while there are many different tools for assessment, too often these same materials are light on just what you should do after the label. How do you teach history so it sticks? What if she can’t understand fractions? What if he loves language but hates to write? This workshop will be all about “What do we do now?” Come away with lots of ideas you can use Monday morning. H Homeschooling Thru Graduation Track _ Getting Started Track F Especially for Support Group Leaders Friday Workshop Descriptions Dianne Craft 10 Friday Workshop Descriptions Friday, 3:00 – 3:45 p.m. Voddie Baucham Training Our Children Equine Arena Ephesians 6 offers a tremendous overview of the child training process. This session will teach you the three basic phases of child training/discipleship as we prepare our children to know and serve God. Julie Hiramine Keeping Your Teens on the Road to Purity Equine Barn In this workshop we will equip parents on how to instruct and mentor their teens to wage the battle against the explicit content that bombards us in today’s world. This workshop is excellent for parents whose teens are entering adolescence. God’s call on this generation of youth is to raise a banner of purity to counter the explosive rise of inappropriate, sexual content in our culture today. In this workshop we will equip parents to wage the battle against sexual promiscuity that we face everyday. Topics discussed will include courtship versus dating, media discernment, and enhancing communication with your teen. Donnie Rosie How Teens and Their Parents Should Approach Modesty and Media H EH2 In this session we will set forth clear principles for discerning God’s will on the issues of modesty and media. This message, coming from a youthful speaker, will add current applications to age-old principles. Teens and their parents are invited. Dewitt Black Why We Need the Parental Rights Amendment EH3 Hear how the Supreme Court and our nation’s lower courts are failing to hold parental rights to the same legal standard as fundamental rights like speech and press, and how European court decisions on children’s rights are influencing our United States judicial system. Dee Black describes three threats to parental rights that involve the political right, political left, and international law, and proposes a solution that will be the battle of the century for homeschoolers and other pro-family forces. Betsy Ray On Your Toes—Homeschooling With Toddlers Under Foot _ EH4 Watch your step! Those wee ones are learning from everything you do. Betsy will offer encouragement and ideas for mothers of toddlers, especially those balancing their older and younger children’s education. Friday, 4:00 – 4:45 p.m. Dianne Craft Smart Kids Who Hate to Write Equine Arena There are children who can tell a wonderful story orally, but when it comes to writing their thoughts down, they only write a few sentences. Sometimes these children reverse letters, or have difficulty writing cursive, or just have very sloppy handwriting. They write many of their letters from the “bottom to top.” These children often can spell a word correctly orally, but leave out a letter when trying to write it in a test. When they copy from a book, they leave words out, or even spell them incorrectly. The spacing on a math paper is very erratic, leading to math errors in problems they know how to do. These children may be “mixed dominant,” being left eye dominant, but right handed. They are truly experiencing a “glitch” between their head and their hand. Learn how to identify the child who has a true “writing glitch” (that is correctable), or a child who is just not motivated to write. This workshop answers these and many other questions that have puzzled you about your children. The exercise you will learn will take the stress out of their writing systems and make the whole process so much easier. Older children go from writing only a few paragraphs, to four–six-page papers after doing this easy exercise daily for four–six months! This exercise is used throughout the United States by athletes. Brian Ray Are You About to Be Co-opted? Separating School and State Equine Barn It is of paramount importance for everyone to consider who should be in authority over what is taught to the minds and hearts of children. Both the concept of a democratic republic such as the United States and a Judeo-Christian worldview demand that parents and private associations be the only educators. Dr. Ray will challenge you to think through this issue and provide you with information and insight that will help you promote the concept of the separation of school and state. This has emerged as one of the most important issues with which homeschoolers must grapple during the early 2000s: “Hi, we are the local government school district and we are here to help you, to give you a free education for your children at home.” Does this positively grab you and comfort you that now all your money and self-doubt worries are over? Or does it send shivers up your spine with visions of Big Brother? Becky Cooke Course Options to Diversify Your High School Program H EH2 Once a child reaches the high school years, a myriad of course options becomes available: parent-taught classes, co-op classes, private tutors, community college courses, online courses, and correspondence schools. Each option is viable, yet which should you pursue for your child? Jim and Karen Stobaugh But We Had Hoped...The Homeschooled Prodigal EH3 We all like the happy stories, but what about the stories that do not have happy endings? After faithful homeschooling all of their lives, what if all our best efforts seem to fail...what if our child(ren) choose not to walk with God? We will look at the life of Absalom and the story of the Prodigal Son and share stories and encourage one another. This workshop is presented by Jim and Karen Stobaugh. As they share their struggles with their oldest daughter, they invite honest sharing and honest questions. Carol Barnier Teaching Your Child to Read...Made Easy _ EH4 Relax. It’s easier than you think. This workshop will walk you step-by-step through a simple and easy-to-use method based on phonics and fun combined in a simple game that kids will ask for day after day. The game is learned in one minute but will grow with your child through years of learning. All the materials for this method will cost you less than two dollars. Friday, 4:45 – 6:00 p.m. HSLDA’s Twenty-Fifth Anniversary Celebration Reception Equine Barn If you haven’t already registered to attend, stop by the HSLDA booth to sign up or just come. You are welcome to bring a friend. H Homeschooling Thru Graduation Track _ Getting Started Track F Especially for Support Group Leaders Creation–Evolution—What’s the Big Deal? I Just Want to Tell People About Jesus Equine Arena (Colossians 2:8) “Who cares whether it was six days or six million years!?” “Isn’t this discussion unnecessarily divisive to the Christian community?” “Are we not losing credibility with the scientific community and hurting the cause of Christ among non-Christians by insisting on a literal interpretation of Genesis 1-3?” Learn to respond Biblically to such charges so that “no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception.” Old-earthers, progressive creationists, and other wizards, come try and stump the wild-eyed, fanatical, six-day creationist. Chris Hogan Developing a Safe, Joyful Home Equine Barn The second priority of a parent is to develop a safe and joyful home that is principle governed. Learn how to provide a safe place for your children that fosters righteousness, peace, and joy. You will discover the practical skills of having a courageous conversation so the most pressing issues in your family’s lives can be resolved according to Biblical principles and your family can be of one heart, of one mind, and of one accord. Learning these skills will help you answer another core question, “Do you delight in me?” When you understand the heart, you will win the heart. Becky Cooke Homeschooling the College Bound: Successfully Navigating the Road to Admission H EH2 If your child’s post-high school plans include college, you’ll want to carefully plan out his high school years. This seminar will provide you with tips and resources to help you better understand how you can prepare your high schooler for the challenges of college, as well as aid you in helping him select and apply to colleges as a homeschooled student. You’ll receive information on making the most of a college visit, interacting with college admissions officers, and gathering the information needed for the college application. Karen Stobaugh When Our Memory Fades EH3 Perhaps no cognitive act exemplifies the wonder of God’s creation than the act of spelling. This workshop looks both at spelling and spelling rules, and it also examines the physical aspects of spelling. Mrs. Stobaugh, a learning disability therapist, shows parents and teachers how to make spelling a thinking, rather than merely a memorization, process. Mrs. Stobaugh also answers these questions: “Why do some very bright students spell poorly?” and “What can we do to improve their spelling skills?” Julie Hiramine A Girl’s High Calling EH4 The intricacies of raising girls in this generation are never ending. Challenges abound with girls: emotions run wild, trying to be modest in a world full of indecency, battles between sisters and girlfriends, how to act with the opposite sex. Join Julie Hiramine as she gives practical wisdom and advice on how to raise a generation of Godly daughters. God’s call on this generation of young women is key to their upbringing, and the world challenges us at every step of the way. Establish a renewed vision of why our daughters are so special to the Lord and His plan for this generation. For moms and daughters aged twelve and order. Saturday, 10:00–10:45 a.m. Voddie Baucham The Father’s Role in the Home Equine Arena Ephesians 5 shows us how the husband/wife relationship paints a portrait of the relationship between Christ and His church. This session will focus on the father’s role in this drama and the importance of the Biblical model. The Truth Project, Session One Equine Barn Do you really believe, that what you believe, is really real? This is the core question that we are seeking to answer in the Focus on the Family® The Truth Project. As you may already know, God is using this project to help Christians look at life from a Biblical perspective in a fresh, new, and powerful way. Each lesson discusses in great detail the relevance and importance of living the Christian worldview in daily life. People just like yourself are being used as hosts, inviting other believers to experience transformation right in the comfort of your home. Focus on the Family is pleased to partner with CHAP to provide a The Truth Project host training opportunity in Pennsylvania (three sessions on Saturday). Focus on the Family required that folks preregister for these sessions by April 30 so they could ship pre-training materials to each registrant. You can read more information on The Truth Project on Focus on the Family’s website: www.family.org. Join Todd as he discusses the issues, examines the effects, and offers practical advice for taming the technological beasts that have invaded our families’ lives. Bruce Eagleson A Critique of the Theory of Special Spontaneous Generation (Evolution) _ EH4 Dr. Eagleson presents a reasoned critique of the idea that life caused itself. He looks at several scientific reasons against this theory and presents an argument for why creation is much more plausible. This discussion is unique in that it is not based on Scripture but on scientific grounds. If you have more than one child, you likely have a right brain learner in your midst. These wonderful children learn in a different manner than their left brain siblings. They don’t learn as easily in an auditory manner (like many curriculum methods), but rather store information in their long-term memory by using pictures, color, story or emotion attached to the facts they need to learn. In this workshop you will learn how to identify the right brain child and learn many simple teaching techniques, such as visual spelling which causes the words to “stick instead of slip.” Watch your children become good spellers with very little effort! You’ll learn how to put “velcro” on math facts, and how to help your right brain children easily remember vocabulary words. You will help them get in touch with the “smart part of themselves” and really shine, using these right brain strategies. Their faces will light up when they find that they can retrieve information so easily. If you have right brain children who are struggling to retain information, or left or right brain children with auditory processing problems, you will love these techniques! Put them into practice the next day! The Truth Project, Session Two Equine Barn Do you really believe, that what you believe, is really real? Noble planning is a tool you can use throughout a child’s life to help them be wise and consider their latter end. (See Deuteronomy 32:29.) Find out how to maneuver through the entire college admissions process, from narrowing down the selection of colleges to filling out college applications, applying for financial aid, and asking the right questions that will help you discern whether your child is spiritually, academically, and emotionally prepared for college. Dick Karman Christian Leadership: Tips and Tipfalls F EH3 With twenty-four years of homeschool leadership experience, twenty years of managing a Christian business, many years of Christian lobbying and over thirty years of marriage (to the same wonderful woman), Mr. Karman shares tips that every Christian leader should know. If it is small church politics, a Boy Scout troop, a homeschool support group, or a national organization, these principles apply to all leaders and those who aspire to leadership. Mary Ann Eagleson Homeschooling: One of God’s Greatest Tools to Shape Us Into His Image _ EH4 When the laundry backs up, and the children’s books are missing, and there is conflict in the Co-op, the call to prayer seems so much more urgent. Mary Ann will candidly and sometimes humorously, share some of the ways these normal homeschooling moments and homeschooling at large has helped mold the character of Christ in the Eagleson family. Saturday, 2:00 – 2:45 p.m. Voddie Baucham Education and Worldview Formation Equine Arena Whoever educates a child shapes that child’s worldview. Parents considering home education need to know that more than just the three Rs are at stake. Moreover, homeschool families need to make sure they aren’t just public schooling at home. Brian Ray Home Educated and Now Adults: Were the Criticisms True or False? Equine Barn Dr. Ray’s major new study examines the lives of 7,306 adults from across the United States who were homeschooled. This research, a long time in the making, focuses on these adults’ general demographics, attitudes toward their own home-education experience, and success in life. Success was evaluated with respect to civic, social, educational, employment, and worldview traits. In many ways, they are very “normal.” On the other hand, they are remarkably different than the general U.S. population. Generally speaking, the findings defuse many of the long-held negative criticisms of those who doubted homeschooling’s benefits, whether practiced in the United States or in other nations. And the findings will likely be a great encouragement to those parents and advocates of home-based education over the past two decades. Camden Spiller Transitioning Into Life After High School H EH2 Homeschool graduates enter adulthood with a unique set of opportunities, challenges, and perspectives. Camden Spiller, founder of Homeschool ALUMNI, discusses these and how graduates, parents, and siblings can support each other in life’s transitions. Carol Barnier Creation of a Homeschool Co-op F EH3 Follow the ups and downs, the mistakes, and the rewards of the first two years of a now-thriving homeschool co-op. Learn how to start, what questions to ask, what costs you can expect, what policies you need up front, and what surprising things human behavior will add to the equation. Nada Rothgaber The New Generation of Home Educators _ EH4 Join Nada in this lively session as she looks at the history of homeschooling and takes a guess at the future of homeschooling. Homeschoolers who went before us traveled many roads and those who come behind us will have different roads to travel. As current homeschoolers, what do we need to do for our grandchildren and great grandchildren? Will the future find us faithful? How can each of us itty-bitty homeschoolers have an influence for the future of homeschooling? Don’t Miss It! Exposing a Trogan Horse Make sure you see Exposing the Trojan Horse in the Equine Arena during the lunch break, at 1:00 p.m. on Friday or 12:00 noon on Saturday. Tom cries in frustration over minor matters. Susie has mood swings. Joey is nicknamed “Eeyore” because of his negative attitude towards things. A three-year-old gets so angry that his rages are almost scary. Carol acts “spacey” and forgets the things she knew the day before. Harold lies awake a long time each night before he can fall asleep. Could all of these behaviors be caused by an upset “gut ecology”? Could they be related to multiple antibiotic use when the child was young, or other factors that affected the child’s intestinal health? Could common physical symptoms such as athlete’s foot, rashes, canker sores, sinus problems, and stomach aches, be related to these children’s behavior and learning issues? The answer is a resounding, “yes”! Find out what other parents have been learning: that there is a direct connection between the physical well-being and learning ability and behavior of a child. This fascinating workshop provides you with clues to your child’s internal learning environment and how to change that environment for the better. It is easy to correct these conditions at home and dramatically affect your child’s learning day. The testimonies received from parents across the United States who are using these simple remedies with their children, are amazing! The Truth Project, Session Three Equine Barn Do you really believe, that what you believe, is really real? This is the core question that we are seeking to answer in the Focus on the Family® The Truth Project. As you may already know, God is using this project to help Christians look at life from a Biblical perspective in a fresh, new, and powerful way. Each lesson discusses in great detail the relevance and importance of living the Christian worldview in daily life. People just like yourself are being used as hosts, inviting other believers to experience transformation right in the comfort of your home. Focus on the Family is please to partner with CHAP to provide a The Truth Project host training opportunity in Pennsylvania (three sessions on Saturday). Focus on the Family required that folks preregister for these sessions by April 30 so they could ship pre-training materials to each registrant. You can read more information on The Truth Project on Focus on the Family’s website: www.family.org. Becky Cooke Wind for Your Sails: Encouragement for Teaching High School H EH2 Scripture says to refresh the weary with a word. Homeschooling is a tough job but God’s Word is overflowing with refreshing words that will help you put all things—even algebra lessons!—in proper perspective. Homeschool moms are not teaching merely academic lessons, we are teaching eternal truths. Come and be reminded of the Lord’s interaction and involvement with you as you homeschool your high schooler. Mary Sayre At What Cost? Maintaining a Life of Balance EH3 There’s an old adage that says, “If you need to get something done, find the busiest person you know and ask them to do the job.” Do you feel like that person? Do you feel pressed on all sides? Does every day on your calendar have something penciled in for you or your children to do? How do you maintain balance while homeschooling your children? Learn the secret of prioritization and the avoidance of schedule overload. Betsy Ray What Do You Do All Day, Dear? _ EH4 This is for all the other moms who have been futilely asking for a maid every year for Christmas. How do you do more than is humanly possible (which most of us are trying to do) or justify not doing it (which is an easily-acquired skill!)? You will be challenged to determine priorities as you seek to organize your time. The Truth Project CHAP is excited to facilitate a partnership with Focus on the Family® to equip members to reach their families and communities with Biblical Truth. Attendance required preregistration to allow Focus on the Family to mail attendees preparatory materials and a special pass to the sessions. The Truth Project curriculum is a systematic and comprehensive Biblical worldview study that looks at all of life. This conference track will equip you to make a Christ-centered difference in our culture by applying God’s principles to daily life. Highlights include: • Understanding and living the Christian worldview in daily life. • Knowing the nature and character of God. • God’s design for all of life: work, science, family, government, art, ethics, and more. • How to thrive in a hostile culture. • Participants will receive the complete DVD set of twelve lessons. (These professionally produced DVDs are only available by attending Focus on the Family’s The Truth Project training or a small group.) • Access to our password protected, learning support site that features lesson outlines, bonus multimedia content, discussion forums, worldview articles, and more. For more information about The Truth Project, visit www.thetruthproject.org. H Homeschooling Thru Graduation Track _ Getting Started Track F Especially for Support Group Leaders In our society, the most criticized area of the Bible is the first twelve chapters of Genesis. These chapters contain information on the whole “creation model,” which explains far more than just the origins of objects (like planets, trees, animals, etc.). In these chapters we also learn of the “fall of man” and its implications; the catastrophe of the flood and its aftermath; the origins of languages, cultures, and racial groups; and the special covenant between God and Abraham that has specific implications for us today. It is a vitally important part of the Scriptures. Unfortunately, many teens fall away from the faith when they leave home because of the united, concentrated, and specific attacks upon this area of the Bible that they encounter (especially in secular colleges) which then cause doubts about the rest of God’s Word. These sessions are designed to help teens understand the importance of the issue and help bolster their faith in God’s Word through very easy-to-understand concepts. These sessions cover a wide range of topics related to origins and help to answer key questions, such as: • Does it really matter where I came from? • Is there scientific evidence for evolution? • Did man descend from ape-like creatures? If so, what is the evidence? • Where did the water for a world-wide flood come from and where did it go? • Is there “proof” that God created? •D oes the Bible provide answers to the questions about dinosaurs? • Is the earth billions of years old? There is a separate line on the registration form for teens registering for the Mission Imperative track due to the additional costs associated with having a teen program. Teens taking part in the Mission Imperative program cannot also register to be volunteers. The Mission Imperative registrants will receive a different color wristband that they will need to wear in order to be admitted to the Mission Imperative program area. A parent must be registered for the convention and on the premises in order for a teen to register and attend the Mission Imperative program. Friday 10:00 – 10:45 a.m. The Horror of the Flood 11:00 – 11:45 a.m. The Mystery of the Dinosaurs Could you explain where the water for a world-wide flood would have come from, and perhaps more importantly, where did it all go!? Many Christians can’t. Understanding the flood (the purpose, the causes, the aftermath, and the evidence) is very important to everyone’s understanding of a Biblically sound creation model. This session covers all the basics about this event and also includes a video and PowerPoint presentation on the “hydroplate theory” of the flood. This theory is a Biblically accurate and scientifically feasible portrayal of the flood event. This session provides a Biblical alternative to the standard explanation for these creatures and answers the basic questions everyone has on the subject: What were dinosaurs? When did they live? What really happened to them? Does the Bible talk about them?, etc. This is one of our most requested sessions. 12:00 noon – 2:00 p.m. Lunch and Shopping With Parents 2:00 – 2:45 p.m. The Pillars of Evolution 3:00 – 3:45 p.m. Aunt Lucy 3:45 – 6:00 p.m. Shopping With Parents In this session we define “science,” and illustrate the scientific method of problem solving. In the light of true science, the three main concepts that the theory of evolution is based upon are examined and shown to be faith-based rather than science-based. The purpose of this session is not only to show that science does not support evolutionary theory, but also to give Christians some “tools” with which to combat the theory in their own community. What evidence is there that humans evolved from ape-like creatures? As it turns out, not much! In fact, the “evidence” is stunningly sparse, being limited to a few fossilized bones. However, many of these are either fakes, or greatly misinterpreted and exaggerated. This session uses humor as it exposes much of this. Saturday 9:00 – 9:45 a.m. The Hunters and the Hunted, Part 1 10:00 – 10:45 a.m. The Hunters and the Hunted, Part 2 (Based on Romans 1:20.) Using puppets and other visual illustrations, we show how life only shows design, order, and beauty—not random accidents and chance. Issues such as the size of creatures in nature and instinct are briefly examined in this session and shown to be a powerful argument against evolution. This is a fascinating PowerPoint slide program showing incredible animals from around the world and how they “hide” and deceive each other. It continues the main theme of part 1. 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Lunch and Shopping With Parents 2:00 – 2:45 p.m. Spiders 3:00 – 3:45 p.m. Lost Secrets of the Ancient Civilizations 3:45 – 5:00 p.m. Shopping With Parents Repulsive beasts, right? Perhaps, but spiders have incredible abilities. They are marvels of design and very beneficial to mankind. This session takes a fun and fascinating look at these creatures in a new light. (Will you hesitate to squish the ones you see in your house after seeing this session? No, probably not!) This session normally closes the seminars. With fascinating illustrations, it contrasts the evolution model with the creation model from a historic standpoint through a look at what many ancient cultures were able to accomplish. It contrasts some of these civilizations to our own. Booth 1031 Hungry? A Closer, Temporary Cafeteria Has Been Set Up in the Equine Barn! Worms are also called nature’s plow. Worms twist and turn going throughout the soil. This creates tunnels. Air flows into the tunnels so the worm can breath. Water and moist air travels through the tunnels, because the worm needs moist air around it’s body, and the plant needs water to grow. There are vinyl decals, tee-shirts, and tote bags for sale at the CHAP booth. We have purchased removable die-cut, vinyl decals, in an effort to spread the exciting word about homeschooling, raise a small amount of money for CHAP and other state and international organizations, and raise a smaller amount of money for the National Alliance of Christian Home Education Leadership (NACHEL, referred to as the Alliance). The latter group is designed to assist organizations like CHAP. The website noted on the decals, tee-shirts, and tote bags, is sponsored by the Alliance. When individuals look up beginning homeschooling on the web, they often find this site. It has a map of the United States and if one clicks on a given state, he is linked to the statewide, Christian homeschooling organization(s) in that state. All these organizations are affiliated with the Alliance and abide by a solid Christian statement of faith. The Alliance has voted to support this campaign and all its affiliated state organizations have been invited to take part in this. Prayers for this endeavor would be greatly appreciated, as the Lord brings it to mind. As you travel around this year, keep your eyes open for It Works decals—they are spreading all over the nation and beyond. Sponsored by: Audio Recording Order Form Instructions Once again we are doing a supermarket-style, self-serve model at the convention. You have several options. You can pre-pay for the CDs you want. We will mark your form with the number of CDs you pick up, and a paid mark and signature by our staff will be placed on your form. Later on either day or at the conclusion of the convention, you can come back to our cafeteriastyle CD service line, walk through and gather your remaining CDs. Show a staff member your order form noting the number of CDs you needed to still receive, along with those CDs and be free of the long pay-at-the-end line. You may also fill out the order form and leave it with us to be filled after the convention. The shipping cost of this service is $1 per CD shipped, with an $8 maximum shipping fee on any number of CDs over 8. There are several packages we are offering this year: • Buy 5 CDs and get one free. • Save over 40% when you purchase a whole set of convention workshop CDs for $180. • Save almost 60% when you order a whole set of the convention workshops on an MP3 CD for $125. Plan Ahead... The 2009 CHAP Convention registration will open January 31. Decals are $2.00 each at the convention. If mailordered from www.CHAPonline.com, they are two for $5.00 and four for $9.00. Additional options are available for larger quantities. Tee-shirts and tote bags are $10.00 each (see website for shipping if mailordered). Coming Soon!
