LAVEEN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL November 2015 Students S.O.A.R.ing to Success Principal’s Message I can’t believe we are already halfway through the second quarter. As we look back, I feel we have had a lot of success. We are celebrating student achievement once a month, our community partners are active mentors on our campus, and we are preparing for a wonderful leadership day in the spring. In addition, I want to take this opportunity to remind parents we are offering several opportunities for our students to be successful. If you log in ParentVue and find your son or daughter is failing please contact your child’s teacher and ask about the following: After School Tutoring: We offer tutoring in ELA and Math at least once a week in First through Eighth Grade. Saturday School: Saturday school is designated for 7th and 8th grade students that need a little extratime to complete their homework. Students designated for Saturday School attend school from 8:00 am - 12:00 pm most Saturdays. Mentoring: Our community partners have become very involved with mentoring. If you believe your son or daughter would benefit from bi-monthly mentoring seasons please contact J.P. Ketcham at 602-237-9110. Little Hawks Preschool recently held 2 successful family events! There was a great turnout for the 8th Annual “Preschool Pumpkin Patch” held October 28th at Laveen Elementary. Preschool families were able to pick and weigh their pumpkin, decorate or carve it, then have their family photo taken with the finished pumpkin! The Little Hawks also had the opportunity to play with pumpkin scented play dough, participate in various crafts, and explore water and seeds in the sensory table. Little Hawks and families gathered at Tolmachoff Farm in Glendale on November 7th for a preschool family field trip to support the classroom November “Farm” theme. The Little Hawks were able to get hands on with farm animals and plants. They had the opportunity to pet and feed farm animals, climb a hay pyramid, and take a ride on a farm “cow” train. A favorite activity for all included a walk through the field to pick vegetables. Children and adults also experienced a “classroom in the corn” lesson that included learning about different kinds of corn and the many products we use everyday that are made from corn. Everyone made it safely through the corn maze! The next Preschool family event will be held on Tuesday, November 24th; the 9th Annual “Give Thanks for Pizza” at 10:45 (AM class) and 2:15 (PM class). This event will be held in the Laveen School gymnasium. English Language Learner Update October seems to have gone by so quickly and November doesn't seem to slowing down. The English Language Development department has been very busy at Laveen Elementary. Our Instructional Associate has begun the intervention schedules and is working hard to provide the ELL students with as much intervention as possible. The students are working to get ready for the Arizona English Language Learner Assessment (AZELLA) that is given in early February through late March. If you have any questions about the ELD program, please email Staci Snow at [email protected].
