The formation of the College:The study of political science as a scientific department and a
specialized field was founded first, at the College of Arts, at Baghdad
University in 1959. In 1963, it was transfered to a new college named
the College of Economics and Political Science. During the process of
the reorganization of Baghdad University in 1969, the Department had
become part of the College of Law and Political Science. In 1987, the
Department has become an independent new college under the name of
the College of Political Science.
The Departments of the College:The College consists of three scientific departments and one
Unit of Researches. These are:1. Department of International Studies:-
It includes (27) teaching staff members. (4) of them are full professors,
(6) are assistant professors, and (14) are Instructors, and (3)are
assistant Instructors .
2. Department of Political Thought:-
It includes (30) teaching staff members. (3) of them are full professors,
(8) are assistant professors, (8) are Instructors, and (11) are assistant
Instructors.

3. Department of Political Systems and the Third world:-
It includes (23) teaching staff members. (5) of them are full professors,
(9) are assistant professors, (5) are Instructors and (4) is assistant
Instructor.
Teaching system:The college grants three scientific degrees, a Bachelor, a Master and a
Ph.D. in Political Science.
First:- The Bachelor degree:- morning and evening classes:
The duration of this degree is four academic years. At the fourth
year, the student will be granted an academic adopts the annual
system. specialized degree in Political science.The college The teaching
language is Arabic except for one academic subject, is taught in English
for each of the four years.
The Teaching curriculum of the B.A. Program:The students are taught the following courses:
First year (freshman): Constitutional law and comparative Political
systems- The principles of Political science. History of international
relations- Introduction to Political science (in English) –Human Rights
and Public liberties– Economics -Introduction to the study of law –
Arabic language- Computer course.
Second year (sophomore) :- International Relations-International
Organizations (in English)-Local Governments –Political Sociology-
Ancient and medieval Political thought – public international law-Political
Problems in Asia, Africa, and Latin America- Contemporary political
developments in Iraq.

Third year (Junior):-International Organizations- Strategy –Political
parties –Modern western political thought – Arab and Islamic Political
thought-Arab political systims- International Economic RelationsContemporary Political systems(in English).
Fourth year (senior):- Diplomacy – Foreign policy- Political systems of
Turkey and Iran-Contemporary western Political thought- Contemporary
Islamic Political thought- International policy (in English)-the Palestine
issue-Public opinion- Political researches.
Second:- The postgraduate Program. It includes the study of the
Master and Ph.D. Programs.
The Master program: Teaching this level has started at the
Department of political science, College of law and politics, since the
academic year 1974-1975.
The Ph.D. program: It has started since the academic year 1986-
1987. Prior to the academic year 1998-1999, the college used to grant
degrees in Political science in general. Since then and until the present
time, the college has been granting specialized degree in accordance
with the specialization of each department of the college.
The teaching of the postgraduate program includes a preparatory
year, which the student is required to pass successfully in order to be
qualified for the comprehensive exam. Passing successfully this exam is
a must. in order for the student, to start writing thesis and defend it in
front of a specialized committee.

The preparatory year of the postgraduate program includes highly
specialized scientific courses within the three scientific fields
(International Relations- Political Thought and Political Systems). In
addition, there are specialized seminars and pro-seminars. One of the
specialized courses taught at the two programs must be in the English
language.
Third : The college library ; It contains around 26481 books.14365 of
them are in Arabic.12116 are in foreign languages, mostly English.
Also, the library contains 5282 periodicals, 461 of them are in Arabic,
and 4821 in different foreign languages.

Vision, mission and objectives
of the Faculty of Political Science / University of Baghdad
First : The Vision:
To intensify the teaching of scientific political mechanism required
for the management of public affairs (government) in both Iraq and other
various states.
This is done at both theoretical and practical political levels. The
expected result is to qualify specialists through scholarly programs with
high level of political learning to serve our country.
Second: Message:
To provide the students of political science a comprehensive
understanding of political science,together with rules of political action at
official and popular levels.
The graduates will be qualified with political knowledge,and the ability to
a manage state affairs at local,national and International levels.
Third: Objectives:
• The preparation of qualified people with an in-depth political study
equipped with scientific thinking and the ability for academic research
and investigation,seeking the truth in the fields of Political Thought,
Political Systems and the Third World,and International Studies.
•To prepare professionals to work in the Foreign Ministry, universities
and international and regional organizations and jobs related to
information, public relations and teaching human rights and democracy.
• To encourage scientific research in the fields of political studies.
• To provide scientific consultations to ministries andrelated government
departments,and relevant international and regional organizations,and
civil society institutions.

Theses and dissertationsof Graduate Studies
The college Issued in September 1999 (A Guide of theses written
in Political Science for the period 1974-1998) (Part I), where
information of postgraduate studies in political science at Baghdad
University,database, titles of theses and dissertations theses are
mentioned . It includes names of researchers,supervisors and year of
graduation Both M.A.theses and ph.D.dissertations are listed till the end
of 1998.
The guide also contains titles of theses that were completed at
the Center for International Studies (previously Institute of Asian and
African Studies) in the period (1988-1990).The center became
administratively and scientifically,part of the Faculty of Political Science
from 1987, Till 1995 . Since then it was officially subordinate,as a
separate center, to the administration of Baghdad Universty.
The college issued part II of the guide (which covered the period
from jan-1999 till july 2001.
It was published in the first issue of the newly published "the early
journal of political science".
The number of dissertations that have passed through vivd(1974-2010)
is (400)dissertations.
The number of vivas.(1987-2010) is (160) theses.

Journal of College :
The College issues a bi-annual specialized Journal of Political
Science.
The college has already issued 42 issues of the Journal till July 2010.
The Journal is credited by Iraqi universities for scientific promotion and
nourishment of the researches..
