Continuing its tradition as the region’s most spectacular bridal event, the Central Washington Bridal Show is adding a Cake Dive competition to the entertainment lineup of its 30th annual expo held Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013, at the Yakima Convention Center. The show, which features a New York style fashion show and more than 80 vendors, is the longest running bridal show in the state. “This is the only place in Yakima or Ellensburg where you are able to plan your entire wedding under one roof,” says bridal show association president Darin Clark. Visitors will be able to interview multiple DJs, sample cakes, sit inside a limousine and more. New to the show this year is the Cake Dive, slated for 1 p.m. Six brides selected by Townsquare Media radio stations will dig into an 4-by-8-foot cake in search of hidden rings representing three prize packages worth more than $4,000. (Special thanks to the generous vendors who donated prizes for this event; see sidebar for more details.) The bridal show also features two New York style fashion shows, at 3 p.m. and again at 4 p.m., promising to be “the most electric and technologically advanced fashion show we have ever produced.” Staged in the south ballroom, each show will seat 500 guests. The fashion shows will feature gowns and formalwear, hair, makeup, flowers and jewelry. Organizers of this 30th annual event are proud of the Central Washington Bridal Show’s strong tradition of offering the area’s largest collection of quality wedding professionals. The show requires its exhibitors to be licensed and local — no hobbyists allowed. January 2013 The show dates to 1982 when eight exhibitors held the area’s first bridal show at a local hotel. Disc jockey Joe Hiner of Sound Shows recalls hand building lighting structures for that first fashion show because nobody in Yakima had the appropriate equipment. “So many people showed up, we had to put on two fashion shows,” Hiner recalls. Over the years, the show has continued to build and adapt. Held for a number of years at the Yakima SunDome, the bridal show moved back to the Yakima Convention Center in 2012. Organizers received rave reviews about the remodeled show’s improved atmosphere and new runway show. The show’s bridal guide, Bliss, is loaded with ideas and resources designed especially for couples planning a Central Washington wedding. Readers will find a list of vendors featured at the show in the back of this publication. Happy planning, and thank you for attending the 2013 Central Washington Bridal Show! Freshman year, Matt spotted Mikaela wearing Eisenhower High sweats and asked if she was from Yakima; he graduated from Riverside Christian. The couple got to know each other through shared classes, as well as road trips back home. “I didn’t have a car at school, but he did,” Mikaela notes. Matt proposed in 2012 with a Valentine rhyme. “The last line was, ‘Will you marry me?’” Mikaela says. “I said yes.” The couple’s six-month engagement was a whirlwind of exams, graduation, then Mikaela interning with the Oscar Mayer Company most of the summer in Madison, Wisc. Her mother and Matt handled most of the wedding plans. “Everything turned out great,” says Mikaela. One of the day’s special details were the unique guest favors — monogrammed apples created by Allan Bros., the groom’s family orchard in Naches. In lieu of a honeymoon, the collegiate couple went back to school together. Two days after the August ceremony, Matt and Mikaela started a two-year graduate program at Purdue — Sara Bristol University in Indiana. ■ Central Washington Bridal Show Source Book: Photographer: Kira Baron Photography bridal apparel: Fashion Corner Formalwear for the entire wedding party Ask about our bridal party package Over 1,000 tuxedos in stock Special offers $30 off all tuxedo rentals Men’s suits in stock Reg. price $299.99 now $119.99 Cake: Christie’s Cakes Store hourS Flowers: Blooming Elegance Monday-Friday 9:30-6:00 Saturday 9:30-5:00 linpaulsbridal.com LiNENS: Party Connection Gift Registry: Macy’s January 2013 Over 700 bridal gowns in stock starting at $99 Accommodations: Hilton Garden Inn and 509.248.6191 Oxford Inn & Suites 101 North 3rd Street in Yakima Call for your appointment today! centralwashingtonbridalshow.com | 9 Dunbar Jewelers Your wedding is one of the most important events of your life — take the time to plan it well and you will truly be blessed for your efforts. Darin Clark Entertainment Plus Disc Jockey Bliss Magazine flowers Written by chloe west FloweR Power From the walk down the aisle to the tables of the reception hall, flowers are a showpiece that help establish the theme of your special day. Whether you dream of soft-hued roses or exotic orchids, a florist can help you make the most of your floral budget. Here’s what a bride needs to know in order to properly prepare her floral design before the savethe-date: While there are a few things to be aware of before the actual meeting takes place, communicating with a florist is key. If a bride knows who she wants to use as her florist, especially if she has been planning this day since she was young, she will need to call almost immediately once the planning process starts to ensure her florist of choice isn’t already booked. THE MEETING No matter your budget, flowers are part of the wedding a bride won’t want to leave for the last minute. Once the wedding date is set, you’ll want to start scheduling meetings with vendors. The sooner a bride contacts a florist, the better. “I suggest two to three months in advance,” says Sharon Gillihan, owner of Yakima’s Design Artistry. Even six months is a feasible advance time frame to have so that both parties can be clear on the path they’re taking. THE BUDGET Your floral budget should include all of the arrangements for the ceremony and reception, including your bridal bouquets and corsages. Locally, vendors say, flower budgets can range anywhere from $400-$1,500 for a typical wedding. It depends on how many flowers a bride wants and how involved the bouquets are to make, Gillihan says. Alyson Mackay of Yakima’s Something Blue Floristry suggests that “whatever budget a bride has, a good florist should be able to help them come to good kira baron photography melissa michelle reflections Getting the most bouquet for your budget the bridal bouquet, one of the most photographed details of a wedding, is the best place to splurge if your floral budget is tight. Flowers by Design Artistry continued >> January 2013 centralwashingtonbridalshow.com | 11 Flower Power | kira baron photography flowers from page 11 results.” Vendors suggest that if a bride is on a tight floral budget, the most money should be spent on the bridal bouquet, body flowers, or any flowers that will appear in wedding party photos. “Your bridal bouquet and bridesmaids’ bouquets will be the most photographed flowers at your wedding,” says Mackay. “Make sure that your favorite blooms get into these bouquets.” Lori Osborn of Yakima’s Blooming Elegance offers a do-it-yourself wedding kit for those who are looking to save. A bride will receive a set of 100 roses plus ribbon and sheers, and anything else that is needed to create her own arrangements, two to three days before the wedding. THE LOOK Once a consultation is scheduled and the budget established, the next thing a bride needs to consider are colors. Many, if not all, floral shops will have a photo book of different styles and ideas for the bride to consider. But vendors highly encourage brides to bring their own photos and ideas as well. Some main things florists recommend a bride know prior to meeting are wedding colors, with a sample if possible, and a wedding theme or style. Something Blue’s Mackay proposes that a bride make a “must have” list or a wish list for the first meeting. Osborn suggests that if a bride doesn’t know the wedding colors yet, she at least come in with photos of a bouquet or something she likes. “I can incorporate their colors as long as I have a picture,” says Osborn. THE TRENDS The consensus is that roses are the most popular flower used in a wedding. But in recent trends, each florist has seen something different — from incorporating sentimental items, such as a grandmother’s broach, to using vintage-look jars for centerpieces, to choosing daisies for a more country feel. Even with all the tips and experience a florist has, it is ultimately up to the bride to make the final decisions. Florists are willing to work with any bride and each idea and level of difficulty thrown at them, to make every bride feel as beautiful as she always imagined. ■ Chloe West expects to graduate from Central Washington University in June 2013. The pretty girl at the Yakima Bears game was mad at him — and she hadn’t even met him yet. The way Lindsey remembers it, she was enjoying a baseball game with a girl she was mentoring through a YMCA program. Luke was a videographer for the Bears, the guy who puts shots of the crowd up on the big screen. So, there was Lindsey, watching the game and eating some ice cream when she noticed a shot of someone eating ice cream on the big screen — and it wasn’t flattering. “I was eating quite aggressively,” Lindsey recalls. “It was a supertight shot of the side of my face. She scanned the stadium for the camera — and there was Luke, smiling. “He gave me this little wave and I was like, oh, he’s a hunk.” Luke approached Lindsey after the game and invited her to join some friends for a drink. The rest is history. Lucas Orthmann and Lindsey Vaagen were married Sept. 15, 2012, at St. Paul’s Cathedral in Yakima. “The overall feeling of the day was so joyful,” Lindsey recalls. “It was so celebratory and positive. The weather was gorgeous, the people who we really, really wanted to be there were there.” Exchanging vows was the bride’s single favorite moment, but she also enjoyed the “first look” photo shoot with her soon-to-be husband at the baseball stadium where they first met. ■ — Sara Bristol MoSt ACCurAte MeASureMentS for a great looking fit Attentive CuStoMer ServiCe We care about how you look on your big day! The couple met in Seattle and now reside in San Francisco, but the Apple Tree Resort in the bride’s hometown proved the perfect setting for this Yakima girl and her gentleman from Verona to exchange vows and treat their overseas guests to a uniquely American festivity. Francesco, an international tour coordinator from Verona, Italy, had been living in Seattle for two years when he and Gina, an elementary teacher, “met at a bar at like 2 o’clock in the morning,” she recalls with a laugh. “And it just worked out really well. Obviously.” The couple knew many of Francesco’s friends and family would try to make the voyage, so they wanted to make the trip memorable. “We wanted to give them a traditional American wedding experience, but still incorporate some of their traditions,” Gina says. Italian weddings are typically a mass followed by a sit-down lunch or dinner with close friends and family. No attendants in coordinated colors, no table decorations, no golf carts. No Elvis. (We’ll get back to that.) Francesco and Gina’s wedding was themed with vintage travel icons such as maps, passports and suitcases covered with luggage labels. From London to Ellensburg, continued >> January 2013 centralwashingtonbridalshow.com | 19 real weddings from page 19 each table at the reception featured a different city with significance to the couple. The save-the-dates looked like flight tickets and the invitations were passports packed with all the details. “I loved the decorations,” says Gina, confessing she can’t take credit for the decor. “I’m not into planning things. I can’t see what things will look like.” A family friend and the bride’s mother worked throughout the couple’s 14-month engagement to gather pieces for the decor, right down to miniature rolling suitcases filled with Jordan almonds. Jordan almonds as favors are an Italian tradition, Gina notes. Another tradition the couple imported was cutting and auctioning the groom’s tie at the reception. “It’s their money dance, basically. People give money for pieces of the tie,” Gina explains. “I was devastated because I loved that tie.” About 30 overseas guests were in attendance. While they were stateside, some visited the couple in San Francisco or made a stop in Seattle. Having spent six weeks in Italy a year earlier, Gina was honored to take her new Italian friends and family on a Yakima Valley wine tasting tour. “We’ve never had all of our friends and family together, so that was really fun,” she says. Francesco’s friends were thrilled to attend their first American wedding, an event that’s cause for legend abroad. “Francesco told my mom Italians think all American weddings have an Elvis impersonator.” And so they did. Elvis serenaded the rehearsal dinner. ■ — Sara Bristol Central Washington Bridal Show Source Book: Photographer: Memory Montage Photography VENUE: Apple Tree Resort CaTERING: Apple Tree Resort Cake: Christie’s Cakes DISC JOCKEY: Entertainment Plus DJ TENT: Just Ask Rentals Accommodations: Hilton Garden inn and Apple Tree Resort 20 | centralwashingtonbridalshow.com Bliss Magazine January 2013 centralwashingtonbridalshow.com | 21 outdoor weddings green SCEne Tips for troubleshooting outdoor weddings Some of the most gorgeous wedding decorations cannot be purchased at any store, or ordered online. Nature provides them. Outdoor weddings offer a variety of different landscaping possibilities, and give couples a chance to use natural lighting to illuminate their special day. Outdoor weddings allow for a unique wedding experience, but can require more planning than an indoor one. As with any outdoor event, there are several factors to keep in mind, weather chief among them. When selecting a date for your big day, it’s crucial to consider the weather. It could be scorching, freezing, windy, snowy or even a combination of a couple of these. The weather can ruin a wedding and party, and have a large impact on decisions such as where to seat guests 22 | centralwashingtonbridalshow.com memory montage photography Written by danny schmidt or where to place the wedding cake. Obstacles Shirley O’Hare of Shirley’s Cakes in Yakima has been in the wedding business for 16 years, and has seen her share of close calls during outdoor weddings. In addition to her normal duties, she can spend the entire wedding keeping an eye out for any hazardous scenarios, and ways to avoid them. One of her biggest challenges are children. “With backyard-type weddings, it seems to be a little more unsupervised, and that’s always a challenge,” says O’Hare. “One time there were kids playing hide and go seek under the table. I had to pull that really quick. I had to notify the parents: one bump on this table and your cake could be gone.” Weather can also jeopardize your cake. “If it’s a hot day and it’s also some WEDDING venues, such as the Fontaine Estates Winery in Naches pictured here, have both indoor and outdoor spaces that give couples options and a backup plan for bad weather. windy, it’s like putting a cake in front of a heater,” O’Hare says. “Trees will blow all that stuff onto the cake. I usually tell people, you need to be prepared for an option of this cake being somewhere else.” Fancy footwear Shoes are one thing people may not think about when planning an outdoor wedding. With the wrong type of shoe, you could be pulling grass out of the ground during your walk down the aisle or sink your three-inch heel into the mud. “If you’re going to be walking in grass, your heels will stick in the Bliss Magazine grass,” advises Sarah Nelson, a wedding planner at Couture Events in Yakima. “Have either flats, or another type of shoe so that way you won’t sink into the ground—just so you don’t get stuck when you’re walking.” Color coordinating Julie Schilling, with Spring Creek Homestead, a wedding venue in Union Gap with indoor and outdoor spaces for ceremonies and receptions, says that when she is showing prospective couples around, she likes to emphasize color. It is important to note what colors pair up best with the season your wedding falls in. “Colors have a tendency to change after you pick your location. If you have oranges (at the wedding venue), you want to make sure the colors you’re choosing match,” says Schilling. “Have flower boxes and move those boxes around to give color. We have boxes for different color schemes. One is pinks and purples and the other ones are reds and blues.” Schilling says she has held only one wedding where it rained. Surprisingly, it was one of the funner weddings she’s been a part of. The rain started right after the wedding finished, so everyone rushed to the tent, where the band began performing. Thunder and lightening followed and everyone had a blast dancing, listening to the booming weather, Schilling said. But don’t count on every wedding party being so forgiving. Small details With weddings taking place in the summer, or any time of year with hot weather, it is important to keep water January 2013 bottles on ice available at all times for guests. Nelson says outdoor weddings can allow couples to be more creative. “The best ones are filled with the little details,” says Nelson. “Making a design in the aisle with flower petals rather than just sprinkling them; making your guest favors a really big hit; taking your outdoor venue and really personalizing it to who you are as a couple. If people want to just walk away from the music, set up things like horseshoes or a little put-put—nothing crazy where it will be a distraction or too loud, but something fun.” Backup plan The biggest thing to keep in mind for an outdoor wedding is to make sure you have a backup plan. Just because a wedding is planned for the summer, doesn’t mean it won’t rain. You have to be ready for all sorts of obstacles to arise. At Spring Creek Homestead, Schilling is already working on wedding contracts for 2014. She notes it’s important to plan ahead to make sure you have a perfect outdoor wedding. “I like the outdoor ones better. Even aside from some of the careless happenings,” O’Hare says. “It’s just so beautiful with the natural light and the landscaping. It’s breathtaking at times, the beauty of an outdoor wedding.” ■ Danny Schmidt is student at Central Washington University. He writes for the CWU Observer and the Ellensburg Daily Record. A marriage license is valid for 60 days anywhere in the state. A keepsake certificate or certified copies (needed for a name change) carry an additional fee. Blood tests are not required. Both parties must be at least 18 years old (17 under some circumstances) and visit the courthouse together to submit the application. You’ll need to bring photo ID and your Social Security numbers, if applicable, as well as the names of your parents and their birth state or country.
