and appropriate local codes if applicable.
Push-to-Connect Technology
The SharkBite fitting works via a two
stage process that ensures a quick, easy
connection.
• The tubing passes through the release
collar and then through the stainless
steel grab ring.
• The tube is pushed through an o-ring
protector that aligns the tube. It then
passes through a specially formulated
o-ring that compresses between the
pipe and the wall of the fitting before it
reaches the tube stop.
How to Make a Connection
1. All pipe should be free of damage or
debris. Cut PEX Pipe with quality PEX
Cutters, cutters with blunt or damaged
blades may damage the pipe causing
failure. Cut Copper Tube with Tube
Cutter, do not use a hacksaw causing
damage to pipe ends.
2. For copper tube, De-Burr the end of the
pipe using the SharkBite F702 DeBurring tool to remove any sharp edges
that may damage the O-ring causing
failure. Do not De-Burr PEX Pipe.
3. For Copper tube mark the pipe using
SharkBite F702 Gauge with the proper
insertion depth. SharkBite PEX Pipe
is supplied pre-gauged “Safe Seal
Indicator Marks” (SSIM) for faster
installation
4. For Copper push the pipe into the fitting
to the mark made in 3. The mark made
in 3 should rest against the collar of the
fitting ensuring correct insertion depth.
For PEX simply push to the next SSIM
as above.
3
Tube Liner
All SharkBite PEX fittings come with
a preinstalled tube liner. It is an AS3500
requirement when using push-to-connect
fittings on PEX pipe. Tube liners are not
required on copper tube fittings.
Tools
No tooling is required to make a joint using
SharkBite however a pair of cutters (F700 or
F701) are required to cut the PEX pipe.
• SharkBite depth & deburring tool for
1/2” to 1” CTS
• SharkBite disconnection clips and tongs
are available for all sizes to suit PEX or
Cu fittings.

PEX Connections
The Connection
In one easy push the SharkBite fitting’s advanced design seals and locks the pipe securely. When the pipe is inserted into the fitting, it passes
first through the release collar and then through the stainless steel grab ring. The grab ring opens out and grabs the pipe preventing it from
being withdrawn. The pipe then passes through the o-ring protector which aligns the pipe before it passes through the o-ring and hits the stop.
A secure joint is only created when the pipe reaches the stop.
If required, the pipe and fitting can be easily disconnected using SharkBite dissassembly clip or tongs. Simply apply pressure to the release
collar. This releases the grab ring teeth allowing the pipe to be withdrawn from the fitting.
Working Pressure
In compliance with AS2537 a SharkBite joint will withstand
an internal pressure of 850 kPa max temp 95° C

Tube-Liner Polysulfone
To make the perfect SharkBite joint, check that fittings and pipe are clean, in good condition and are free from damage and foreign objects.
Do not use any additional lubricant or sealing compounds. To ensure fittings stay clean and the o-ring is protected from damage, fittings must
be kept in their original packaging until immediately prior to installation.
SharkBite PEX fittings are supplied factory assembled requiring no additional components and cannot be disassembled.
Do not apply excessive force to insert the pipe into the fitting. Need for excessive force may indicate damage to the end of the pipe. If
SharkBite pipe is to be refitted to a SharkBite fitting, it is important to trim the pipe before making the joint.
Do not apply direct heat to any part of SharkBite pipe or fittings (except brazing adaptors).
Ensure the SharkBite pipe is free of scoring, cuts and abrasion. If the pipe has been engaged with the fitting and then requires removal, it is
important that the pipe be trimmed prior to re-engaging.
Holes in timber and metal frames should be accurately sized and SharkBite clips be used to allow the pipe to expand and contract in the
event of temperature change.
Avoid kinking of the pipe. Any kinked section of pipe must be replaced. Use SharkBite bend supports for tight radius bends.
Installations of a SharkBite plumbing system must comply with AS3500.
SharkBite fittings are not to be installed back to back. A minimum distance of 1 safe seal indicator mark for PEX and 25mm for copper tube
must be left. The same rule applies for clipping.

Disconnection
Step 1 – Relieve pressure
Ensure all system pressure has been relieved and drained where possible, although
draining is not mandatory. SharkBite can be installed wet or dry.
Step 2 - Disconnect
Place the disconnection clip over the pipe with the flat face towards the fitting release
collar. With your free hand remove the pipe.
Alternatively:
Place the disconnection tong around the fitting assembly and apply pressure to the
release collar. With your free hand remove the pipe.
Step 3 – Re-Use
You can re-use both the fitting and the tube providing the tube ends are retrimmed prior
to re-use and the fittings are clean and free from damage. Note continued re-use of fittings can affect their performance. Where fittings have been
used multiple times their use should be avoided in permanent installations.
SharkBite fittings are designed so that changes can be made during installation.

Pipe
The full range of SharkBite PEX pipe is manufactured in Australia from high quality virgin materials in Reliance Worldwide’s facilities and are
approved to AS2492-1994.
Cross Linked Polyethylene
The process of cross linking polyethylene ties the molecular chains of the material
together into a three dimensional structure. Improving the properties of the material
and making it ideal for use with both hot and cold water plumbing systems.
Cross linking improves
•
•
•
Performance at high temperature
Chemical resistance
Resistance to cracking, creep and abrasion
Moisture Cure
SharkBite pipe is manufactured using the silane or “moisture cure” method and is produced in a simple two stage process.
1.
2.
Silane grafted polyethylene is combined with a catalyst and extruded into pipe.
The cross linking process is then performed by exposing the pipe to steam. The resulting strong, irreversible cross links for the structure that gives SharkBite its properties, making it suitable for use on both hot and cold domestic hot water plumbing systems

Pressure Loss and Flow Rates
Fitting Pressure Loss
To calculate the pressure loss through a particular fitting, the type and diameter of the fitting and the flow rate must be established. The
pressure loss may then be read from the vertical axis.
To calculate the pressure loss through a number of fittings in a circuit, the number and type of fittings, along with the direction of flow must
be known. The pressure loss through each fitting can then be added together to calculate a total pressure loss.

*Based on AS3500 maximum allowable velocity in pipe of 3m/s
# Based on its minimum ID of 15mm, 20mm SharkBite may be used where AS3500 requires a nominal pipe size of DN20 (eg. Section 3.5.1).
This is a feature of SharkBite pipe only, and not generally applicable to PEX pipe.
Pressure or head loss through PEX pipe
This graph shows pressure loss through SharkBite PEX Pipe at various flow rates in 16mm, 20mm and 25mm.
In order to calculate the pressure loss through the pipe, the given flow rate for a particular portion of tube must be established (this may be
done using the table provided in AS3500.1), along with the required pipe length and diameter. The pressure loss can then be read off the
vertical axis.
It is important to understand the information provided here is theoretical and based on new clean pipe. No allowance has been made for age
or any abnormal conditions of the interior surface of the pipe.

Thermal Insulation
R-Values of Common Plumbing Piping and Insulation.
In certain areas, AS3500 requires a minimum insulation of R=0.3, no current piping material will meet this requirement without suitable
thermal insulation.

Electrical Conductivity
The SharkBite fitting does not guarantee electrical conductivity when used with copper tubing. This is sometimes referred to as a dielectric
system.
Environment
The SharkBite PEX system has obtained a rating of 5 in the Ecoselector database maintained by Vicurban.
For further information contact Vicurban or visit www.vicurban.com.au.
SharkBite fittings are made from recycled materials, and have been designed to be reusable to help reduce waste.
Chlorine Resistance
PEX pressure pipe has very good resistance to chlorinated potable water. At typical major Australian reticulation chlorine concentrations and
PH levels, there will be no impact on the expected lifetime of the pipe in service when within its designed parameters in domestic/multilevel
residential potable plumbing applications.

UV Resistance
SharkBite pipe should not be installed in direct sunlight as the material may degrade with extended UV exposure. Where external installation
is required, install the SharkBite pre-conduited product or provide other similar UV protection.
Acoustic Properties
Comparative tests between DN16 PEX pipe and 15mm copper tube indicate an average noise reduction of up to 17dB (A) can be obtained
when using PEX pipe.
