LA County Sheriff’s Council Celebrates Baisakhi

India’s Baisakhi festival at the Los
Angeles Convention Center here
April 10 along with Bollywood
composer Bappi Lahiri, California
Assemblyman Ted Lieu, as well as
distinguished philanthropists Dr.
Kali Pradeep Chaudhuri, Dr. S.A.
Manohara and Mahesh Shastri.
“I thank all of you for coming
here today. A lot of future events
of the Indo-American community
plan to be here at the LA Convention Center, so let’s get used to
coming to this place, because LA
is truly the city of angels,” said
organizer and CEO of Friends of
South Asian American Communities Kevin Kaul.
Kaul also reflected on the exceptional valor of the Los Angeles
Sheriff’s deputies whom he has
known over the years who risk
their lives daily in the cause of
duty.

EWARK, Calif. – India is
emerging as a key export
market for the U.S., stated
a senior Commerce Department
official, following a day-long
forum here Apr. 9 on American
manufacturing and job creation.
“The Indian market is one of
the fastest growing for exports,”
Ro Khanna, deputy assistant secretary for domestic operations in
the U.S. Foreign and Commercial
Service wing of the Department of
Commerce, told India-West.
In 2008, U.S. exports to India

totaled more than $32 billion, an
85 percent increase over the previous year, noted Khanna.
“The administration is specifically looking to India as one of the
emerging markets where we can
increase our exports in education, medical devices and clean
technology,” he said.
Last fall, Khanna co-led an energy efficiency trade mission to
India, which took representatives
of 16 U.S. companies to Mumbai,
Chennai and Delhi, to woo potential clients in those cities.

He currently owns four hospitals and has various interests in
nearly 32 hospitals. “Most importantly, we have built the first ever
private medical college in India,
right in Kolkata,” he said.
Also honored for his business
entrepreneurship and charity
work was Manohara, CEO and
president of the 150-bed Good Samaritan Hospital in Bakersfield.
“We see a lot of emergencies,
especially psychiatric emergencies, and we admit 300 to 400
patients a month,” Manohara told
India-West, emphasizing that he
is a medical psychiatrist and has
been in Bakersfield for close to
30 years.
“These days there is more de-
mand for hospital care, especially
with the many insurance changes
and the fact that many of the
hospitals have closed down in
other counties near us. We serve
11 different counties all the way
from Modesto to Lost Hills,” he
added.
Actress Alexis Peters shared
a moving tale of her founding an
orphanage for children in India
that changed her life, and popular
Bollywood composer Bappi Lahiri
was honored for bringing Bollywood music to Hollywood.

delight of the crowd before he left

opened with a quote from Rabindranath Tagore and reminded the
gathering that Baisakhi is a very
sacred time in India.
“Farmers sing songs as they
celebrate the monsoon, in Punjab
they play the bhangra, they take
the holy waters, and it’s a real
party time,” he said, linking the
celebration to the good feeling
the Indian American community shares with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s department
and its Indo American Advisory
Council through years of mutual
collaboration and service.
As chief guest, Baca bestowed
a number of awards on the community members present. After
meeting celebrity guest Sherawat,
Baca indicated he and his family
would be seeing more Bollywood
movies.
“My only worry right now is
that my wife has found some nice
jewelry for me to buy at the auction table (sponsored by Highglow
Jewelers) in the back,” he said
with a smile.
Receiving her award from Baca,
Sherawat in turn thanked him and
all the NRIs for inviting her to the
festivities and showing her so
much love.
“I’m really honored. I’m proud
to be here,” she said.
One of the other awardees honored by Baca was Chaudhuri, well
known in the healthcare field.

A respected orthopedic surgeon who practiced in Southeast
Asia, the United Kingdom and the
United States, Chaudhuri is the
founder and president of the KPC
Group, a worldwide conglomerate engaged in various kinds of
industries, including healthcare,
pharmaceutical, bio-fuel, IT services, engineering and medical
science.
“Healthcare is changing, and we
had a hard time getting into a hospital when we first started, but 11
years later, I bought the hospital,”
Chaudhuri told India-West.
