Dear VIP Buyers and Exhibitors,
The Torch Has Passed. Tom and I thank you for the loyalty you have extended to The Norton Shows
over the past twenty-nine wonderful years. We have worked together, grown together and have succeeded together as well. We are reminded during this moment of reflection of the old roads our ancestors built across America, indeed, across the entire world. These roads were hued, dug and worked,
accompanied by backaches, torn muscles and headaches. But, together we built them. And adjacent
arteries which spun off the main roads, creating interstates, enabling us to network, to spread our
wings and fly. And fly we did. The Norton Shows, with lots of love and work by all of us grew to occupy 800 booths and attract more than 21,000 buyers. Those were heady days. Then the economy took
it toll...with all shows...we remember when we had to tell exhibitors, “Sorry, we don’t have any available booths...we’ll add you to our waiting list.”
Our daughter, Nikke Norton and her son, Hunter Norton Johnston are now at the helm of The Norton
Shows. Both are ready, willing and equipped to take over our valuable charge...our VIP Buyers and
Exhibitors...and to take you back, cresting and breaking our past records. Nikke, a University of Tennessee alumni, has always been the sole owner of The Gatlinburg Gift and Variety Show and Hunter,
newly graduated from the East Tennessee State University with a degree in History and Criminal Law
and Investigation, has worked with us since infancy. They know the ins and outs of the business and
learned from us as Tom and I did from our parents, owners of Mortons’ Antique Shows. Nikke and
Hunter are equal partners of Gatlinburg Apparel and Jewelry Market. Tom and I will be involved as
counselors should they have a question. We are pleased with new ideas Hunter and Nikke are tossing
back and forth, all in an effort to grow The Norton Shows. They will utilize the foundation of the old
road which we built to erect even greater routes to success, enlarging the interstates to incorporate
overpasses, bridges, tunnels, encompassing new methods of advertising, technology, networking, video,
bookkeeping, etc., efforting to enable all of us to grow, to be even more successful. Nikke and Hunter
are not afraid to work. Hunter has wonderful attributes and is very inventive and is a kind, thoughtful young man but will stand his ground. May we ponder...let them help you. And you can help them.
Tom and I plan to spend more time enjoying our homes in Gatlinburg and in Florida. I’m looking forward to getting back to my gardening and doing things for which we simply did not have the time or
energy. And writing the great American novel. We still have a few places on our bucket list to visit,
Scotland, Ireland and Spain. And return trips to Paris, exploring more of France. And Cuba. We are
planning a trip for late summer. Want to go with us? After that, when we are too “old” to explore
Europe, we plan to book Amtrak, head north and then circle through the western part of the United
States, visiting nature we were introduced to as children by western movies, spun by John Ford, Walter
Huston, John Wayne and so many other fabulous artists. Right now, I’d just like to sit on our balcony
overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, sip a bit of coffee and contemplate about the things we need to do,
laughing, knowing that we’ll never do them. Looking forward to days without an agenda. Again, we
thank you for your friendship, your loyalty and just the act of all of us being ourselves. We look forward to visiting restaurants and venues in Knoxville, Sevierville. Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg and cities
across the south and north, seeing you and exchanging smiles, hugs and handshakes. Each of you
have enriched our lives a hundredfold.
