If you want to lie around the entire week and be overfed at a
food trough with hundreds of other people,
you might be more suited for a Carnival cruise.
They say money can’t buy happiness, so sometimes it’s
best just to rent it. However, I’ve never tried one of those
rent-to-own places where you make payments on an overpriced
couch or flat screen television and I freely admit I’ve never even
leased a vehicle. Call me un-American, but if I can’t afford it, I just
walk away instead of looking over my payment options.
This is where houseboat rentals make the most sense, especially
this time of year when parents are looking for the ultimate family
vacation. Instead of driving across the country to stare at faces
carved in a rock or blowing your life savings at a “magical” theme
park, you could instead be creating a long-lasting memory with
your kids or grandkids this summer.
Some things, such as a swimming suit for example, you just buy
and hope it works out. I don’t know too many guys who have
ever tried on a swim suit in a store as they searched for the best
one. Call it a man rule, but you just don’t go there.
Houseboat vacations are truly unlike any other type of vacation.
No agenda, catnaps on the top deck, plus nothing beats grilling
up some dinner while the kids play in the water.
Now there is one aspect to trying first before buying that makes
a lot of sense to me and that’s houseboating. Houseboating
is one of those unique adventurers that once you try it you’re
hooked for life. But that can be the frustrating part.
Now I’m not going to lie to you, there is some work involved
when you go houseboating and that’s why you need to try it first
before you buy. If you want to lie around the entire week and
be overfed at a food trough with hundreds of other people, you
might be more suited for a Carnival cruise.
Some people never get a chance to experience the joy of
houseboating. They might have friends who houseboat, but
the price tag on a new custom houseboat leaves them secondguessing their decision and it keeps them stuck at the dock and
excluded from the fun.
Anchoring and/or beaching is just part of the experience, but if
that intimidates you it’s good to know some marinas offer full
service crews to rent that include a captain to help you get the
boat where you want to go and get you anchored correctly when
you do get there.

As great as renting before buying your own houseboat is, there
is actually another major advantage to rental houseboats. Even
if you own your own houseboat already, sometimes it’s fun to
escape to a different lake or even a different part of the country to
quench your houseboating thirst.
If you’ve ever been curious about renting a houseboat, this
summer or early fall would be a great time to give it a try. Gather
together your family and close friends and go discover what
you’ve been missing. Just to recap: trying on swimming suits
before you buy—not good.
I’ve heard of dockmates at a marina getting together with other
houseboaters and renting a houseboat for the week, just so they
could experience a different houseboating lake. How fun would
that be? With so many seasoned skippers, I would dare bet those
trips would be a lot of fun.
Giving houseboating a try through a rental marina before you
invest in your own houseboat—great idea. While you’re at State

Entertain in the huge salon featuring a double sectional

If you are looking for a luxurious houseboat but don’t
plan on inviting the entire city block, the 950 is for
you. Comparable in size to the 900, the 950 features
5 bedrooms, 3 baths and a master bedroom suite with
king size bed and private bath. The gourmet kitchen
has stainless steel appliances including a dishwasher
and microwave.
The salon has a TV/DVD entertainment center – plus
TV/DVDs are in every stateroom. A tracking satellite,
plus an excellent stereo system with an iPod docking
station will keep everyone entertained. The upper
deck is designed for fun featuring a walk-thru sundeck
flybridge, an 8-person hot tub, bar, fiberglass party

Captain the 500 to a secluded spot on
Lake Cumberland, put your feet up,
throw out a line and enjoy the view.
This great mid-priced boat is similar to the 450 with an additional
private master located at the rear of the boat. Popular features like a
party top for some shade, a flybridge, 8 person hot tub, stereo with
an iPod docking station, gas grill and waterslide are all included. Five
bedrooms and a sofa bed provide sleeping accommodations for 12.
A fully equipped galley including a smooth top range, microwave &
refrigerator. The kitchen counter doubles as additional dining area
and there’s a built-in dinette with seating for 6. The salon features a
sectional sofa and entertainment center with a flat screen TV and
DVD player. The 500 is equipped with a 135 HP Honda engine.
The large diesel generator provides plenty of power for air conditioning,
the hot tub and appliances. Diesel engines don’t produce dangerous

Experiencing houseboating for the first
time? The 600 offers loads of amenities
and value for large groups.
The 600 features a spacious interior and four private staterooms.
The galley is at the front of the boat and is equipped with all the
appliances of a home kitchen. The 18’ beam creates a larger open
galley and salon area perfect for entertaining large groups. A Volvo
diesel engine and an oversized diesel generator power all the
electrical appliances including the hot tub and climate control system.
A diving board and a waterslide on the aft deck will provide for lots of
fun in the water.
One of our 600 boats has been specifically redesigned to be
handicapped accessible. The shower accommodates a wheelchair
and offers hand rails for stability. The hallways were widened and
one stateroom allows wheelchair access. The top side is not
handicapped accessible. **

This luxurious 62’ foot houseboat offers
all the bells and whistles for a comfortable
vacation. The perfect houseboat for a quiet
escape with family or friends.
This luxurious 4 bedroom boat, shares a huge salon and galley area,
featuring a large sectional sofa which converts to a fifth bed plus a
large open back deck. The entertainment center includes a 27” TV,
with DVD, indoor/outdoor stereo system. The fully equipped galley
has a smooth top range, microwave and large refrigerator.
Topside, the boat has a fly-bridge, propane grill, 8 person hot tub,
waterslide, 6 lounge chairs and a party top for shade. A catamaran
hull design exclusive to State Dock provides increased cruising speed,
improved stability and handling plus arrow-straight tracking. It is
equipped with a Honda outboard engine, diesel generator and an
inverter that allows for continuous operation of the refrigerator and
entertainment system when the generator is off.

sofa converts to a bed. The galley is equipped with a standard

Powered by a 90 HP Honda engine while the diesel generator

How to choose the
right rental
for you and your group!
Picking the right houseboat rental can
sometimes be a daunting task, particularly for
those who are new to this unique vacationing
experience. State Dock offers 11 different
models of houseboats; all with their own
features, sizes and costs. Here are a few tips.
Budget. Try and stay within the budget
you and your group have put together, but
that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t shoot for the
houseboat you really want. If you’re dying to
try out a newer luxury model or you want to
extend your vacation by a few more days, just
check out the different pricing available during
the different times of the year. Sometimes it’s worth tweaking your vacation
schedule if it means you can get in a longer stay
or a bigger houseboat with more amenities.
Size. How many beds do you need?
State
Dock houseboats range from 4 bedrooms and
a sofa bed up to 8 bedrooms and a sofa bed.
Even our smallest boat is comfortable and
includes a generator, air conditioning, home
style appliances and a gas grill. As the size and
cost increases so do the amenities.
Depending on how many family members or
friends you have coming along, this could vary
from a few select couples to, a boatload of
people. Check out the recommended sleeping
capacity first, keep in mind what your guests
are like and how comfortable they are sharing.
If some people really need privacy and space to
feel comfortable, consider a bigger model with
more rooms or even multiple boats.
Multiple Boats. In some situations, one
houseboat just won’t cut it. Perhaps you
have two families that would just prefer their
own privacy or you’ve got just a few too
many people. Sometimes, renting multiple
houseboats is the way to go. Plus, with our
multi-boat discount, the final cost may work
out better for you than just one larger boat.
Amenities. Don’t forget to think about
what amenities you’ll need or expect to find
onboard. All of our houseboats come stocked
with items like bed linens, towels and kitchen
utensils. Some amenities are only found on
certain models. Our chart on page 25 shows a
comparison of the features of each boat type.
PARTY TOP: This provides shade and protection
from the elements on the second deck of the
boat and expands the useable outdoor area of
the boat tremendously. It is a great place for
people to gather. Stereo speakers are included
on top of boats with party tops. All models
except the Admiral and 400 have party tops.
TOPSIDE BARS: You can’t go wrong with a topside
bar to help entertain a crowd. Use the added
counter space to layout food and drinks. The
bar also comes with a sink with fresh water.
HOT TUBS: All models except the Admirals have
hot tubs. Larger boats have larger tubs. Our
tubs can be drained and filled from the lake and
heat up in approximately 2 hours.
UPPER DRIVING STATIONS: All models except the
Admirals have upper driving stations in addition
to the driving station on the lower level.
SATELLITE TRACKING TV: Boat Models 800 and
above have tracking satellite systems that
automatically follow the satellite for television
reception while out on the lake. Other models
also have televisions in the salon but they only
play DVDs or game systems brought along by
customers.
Other Considerations. A few other
amenities to think about are kitchen appliances
such as dishwashers, clothes washer and dryers,
and Sirius satellite radio. Evaluate the needs of
your fellow vacationers and compare your list
with all the features offered on our houseboat
amenities chart on page 25.
This amount of information could seem
overwhelming. In the end, don’t sweat it. We
can help you figure this out. Remember to
make your reservation as soon you can for the
upcoming year to assure you get the boat you
want. And of course, if you have any questions,
we’re just a phone call away. We will gladly steer
you through the right course to get you on the
best houseboat vacation ever!

Vacation Policies
RESERVATION DEPOSIT: Houseboat rental reservations
will be confirmed in writing upon receipt of your
reservation deposit. - ALL HOUSEBOAT RENTALS
REQUIRE A MINIMUM $600 DEPOSIT. If you cancel
your reservation 60 days or more prior to your
scheduled date of arrival, your deposit will be
refunded, less a $100.00 processing and remarketing
fee. The reservation deposit is NON-REFUNDABLE if
cancellation is less than 60 days prior to scheduled
arrival date.
1100 / 1000 MEGA CAT DEPOSIT: A minimum of $1000
is required. The deposit is non-refundable due to
cancellation at any time.
PAYMENT: Full rental payment is required on
ALL HOUSEBOATS no less than 30 days prior to
scheduled date of arrival. If payment is not received
as required, your reservation will be automatically
canceled and your reservation deposit will be
forfeited. Prepaid rental payments are nonrefundable and will be forfeited if your reservation is
canceled less than 30 days prior to scheduled date of
arrival. Payment by personal check will be accepted
30 days or more prior to scheduled date of arrival.
Discover, Visa and MasterCard payments are welcome
anytime.
SECURITY DEPOSIT: After your full rental payment is
received, your reservation deposit becomes the
security deposit for the houseboat and will be
refunded during check-out providing there are no
claims for damage, missing equipment, unreasonable
housekeeping or late check-out.

The revamped two-day Lake Cumberland Poker Run—featuring no official start— has
made the longstanding event more enjoyable and relaxed for many who join the fun over
the weekend.
With nine marinas along Lake Cumberland handing out cards on Friday and Saturday,
boaters need to make it to at least five of the stops to participate in Saturday night’s
poker run draw at State Dock, the event’s host location. Known around the
country as one of the best poker runs, the Lake Cumberland Poker Run allows
participants from all over the eastern United States to take in the sights and
sounds from the beautiful 76 Falls to the legendary party cove at the
Harmon Creek section of the lake.
According to Joe Schaldenbrand, one of the owners of Sunsation
Powerboats who has attended the event many times, the poker run
is more relaxed now. Louisiana’s Nate Michel did the poker run in
his Outerlimits V-bottom Remote Access and had a great time.

“On Saturday, we told a dozen or so Sunsation customers
that we’d meet at the falls so we all migrated down to 76
Falls, rafted off for a bit then we went to party cove and just
hung out for the day. It was cool to see a pack of Sunsations
together. In fact, every model we build was there—we had
a 28, 32, 36, 43 and our 29 and 34 center consoles. That’s
never happened before so that was pretty neat.”
“I think a lot of friendships were made, too,” he continued.
“Everybody really gets to know one another when you raft
up with like-minded boaters. From a marketing standpoint,
the overall exposure was better. Everything was just more
relaxed—you never felt like you had to hurry up and get
anywhere, which was nice.”
Enjoying the company of friends was exactly what
Kentucky performance boater Mike Thornton did
throughout the long weekend. Thornton, who owns the
388 Skater Powerboats catamaran Frisky Business, was

“I was impressed with the caliber of boats this year,” said
Thornton, who would love to see a top-speed shootout
added to the event and encourages anyone who would
participate to contact Bill Jasper and the organizers at
State Dock.
“There were boats like mine and Bill’s that like big speeds
and guys in 22-foot Baja sportboats and everything in
between. I wasn’t sure how the format change would work,
and although we lost the big spectator gathering for the
start, everyone had a great time. The dock parties were
fantastic and of course Harmon Creek was
Harmon Creek.”

New houseboat company is a merger
of powerful forces in the Kentucky
houseboating community.
A new houseboating company has been established, and it’s
time for celebration. But this company isn’t entirely new; it’s a
merger of powerful forces in the houseboating community.
Thoroughbred Houseboats and Stardust Cruisers have formed
Trifecta Ventures, which is a joint venture consolidating the
manufacture of the three premier houseboat brands.
Stardust Cruisers, Sumerset Houseboats and Thoroughbred
Houseboats will now be built in an expanded manufacturing
facility located in Monticello, Ky. Each brand will keep its own
identity, but will be able to pull their power in the industry
together.

The reason behind this merger is to lower overall cost of
manufacturing by consolidating purchasing, manufacturing,
service and delivery. Unlike previous economic downturns,
these companies have seen the cost of raw materials and
manufactured goods used in the construction of houseboats
continue to rise instead of adjusting to our current economy.
These rising costs make building boats more expensive
which is frustrating not only to the buyer, but to the
manufacturers as well.
What does this merger mean for you as the consumer? This
consolidation of manufacturing under the Trifecta Ventures
umbrella has already reduced input costs and will continue
to optimize the manufacturing process. This creates a better
product at the best possible price for the houseboat customer,

the waters edge far across from 76 Falls, of which I swam to
and underneath. That was amazing. There has been a lot of
rain and so the falls were in peak flow. The boat had everything you could need, and there’s minimal tutorial without
issue. There was cliff jumping into the water and thankfully
the water level was way up or the jump would have been
more like 80ft instead of 50ish! I would go again. It was a nice
little 4 day boat vacation through the State Dock.
