ANYBODY CAN WIN
BY VERN COOPER
PRESIDENT, USBF WESTERN SECTOR
As I talk to people that run tournaments and to
those that play in them every weekend the one complaint I
seem to hear the most is it’s always the same people or
teams that win.
On August 17th the IAC club in Stockton held the
Western Sector Open Championship. I had the team I
usually play with in 4 person tournaments; the Sopranos.
And Paolo Pro had a team that was real strong; Team
Pro. After the round robin brackets The Sopranos were
ranked #1 and the Lady Sopranos were in by a wild card
and ranked #8.
The Lady Sopranos is my wife's team so that's always fun and makes for an interesting ride home no matter what happens. She had a lady on her team that was
playing in her first tournament so, not to say we took the
ladies for granted, but we thought we had a good chance
of winning. As the game went on they just wouldn't go
away and the final result was they out played us and won.
It was a long game and everyone watching cheered like
mad. There wasn't an A player on their team but they
played like champs and deserved to win.
When I say the ladies were pumped up that is an
understatement. The next team the ladies had to play was

Team Pro so they knew they had a challenge ahead. They
went into that game looking confident and playing well.
After a few great shots and good lagging the Lady Sopranos came out on top. That meant they were going to play
for the Championship.
The team they had to play was a team of 3 guys
from Penn Valley and a lady from Stockton; none of whom
were A players. The 3 guys from Penn Valley have been
playing in a lot of tournaments lately and have been really
improving. After beating two pretty good teams, I think the
ladies had played their hearts out. They were defeated by
the Nevada Bocce 1 team. The Nevada Bocce 1 team
went through the day and never lost a game. My point to
all this is the top two teams didn't have an A player on either team and they both beat teams that had several A
players. So when you hesitate putting a team together just
keep in mind; anybody can win at any time. As long as you
just play your best you have a chance and that's all you
can do.
FRIDAY NIGHT RAFFA Now that we have taken a little
time off after the Nationals its time to get back in the swing
of things. We are going to start Friday Night Raffa again at
IAC on Sept. 20th. The format is going to change a little. You can have as many A,B,C, men or ladies as you
want. Just make a team and play with that team. If you
have a team or are interested in playing and don't have a
team but would like to be on a team email me at
[email protected]. This is going to start soon so sign
up early. Hope to hear from you soon.
We have a response to our reaching out to
bocce players who might have used balls they
no longer need. We have a request for used
balls for a group who are just starting to play
bocce. If you have a set or two you would be
willing to sell at a reasonable price, let us
know. We’ll see if we can broker a deal.
Tell us what size; 107/920s or 106/900s. What
color are they? Is it a four ball set or an eight
ball set? How much do you want for them?

ROSS ON RULES
CLUELESS ON THE COURT,
KNOW THE RULES, or
REPEAT OFFENDER?
By John Ross
Past President, USBF
I had trouble deciding on a title for this month’s
column so I used all three. A few weeks ago after a
league game I was asked a rule question by a player
at Campo di Bocce of Los Gatos. He had just completed two games and was baffled by one of his opponent’s behavior. The opponent consistently stood
on the curb in front of players on the active end who
were lagging or shooting. When the offender was
asked to stand behind the players in the back of the
box he insisted that he could stand anywhere he
wanted. He was so blatant that he would even move
closer to the foul line when his opponent was getting
ready to shoot! None of the players on either team
wanted to make a big fuss about it so nothing was
done.
This type of behavior might be allowed in jungle
bocce, but certainly not in civilized bocce played under a set of rules. First, it is a matter of common
courtesy. Also, there are two sets of open rules that
address this situation. The primary set of rules are
the national USBF Open Rules posted on the USBF
web site. The national rules, under the last paragraph
titled Game Notes, second item, has a sentence that
states: Any time a player is in action, opposing
players should be off the court or far behind the
player if courts don’t have adequate space. The
problem with the national rule is that it does not have
a penalty that addresses punitive action after repeat
violations. It is up to the players to self-police or the
league or tournament director can apply a penalty
using the USBF code of Conduct.
The second set of rules that were available in
this case are the specific league rules that the club
developed based on the USBF rules. The league has
a courtesy rule that covers the situation and it states:
Players must stand aside while the opposing
team is playing. Players on the throwing end
must be behind the player rolling or shooting.
First violation gets a warning. Second violation
loses one ball for the next frame. When an offender’s teammate on the other end loses a ball the problem generally goes away and the offender’s own
teammate becomes the enforcer. This rule is generally applied once in a game and the offender usually
gets the message.
In the example cited above, no one on either
team was aware of the league or national rules or had
a copy of the national or league rules in their ball bag.
The league rules also were posted on the club’s bulletin board next to the league information! These
were all experienced players with extensive tournament experience at the local, sector, and national level! The lesson here is to know the rules or suffer the
consequences.
As a follow up a couple of weeks later, I spoke
to the player who had originally asked about the rule.
He had just been to a tournament the past weekend
and observed the same individual described above as
the offender, exhibiting the same behavior described
above. I asked him if anything was done. He replied:
“No. But since our team was in a different bracket we
opted not to say anything and let it go.” He also said
that the tournament director did nothing to rein in the
offender’s behavior. This type of conduct ruins the
bocce experience for most players and sucks the joy
out of the game. Many players have lost interest in
the tournament side of the game because of this and
similar actions by other players. There is no need for
it as it is a form of cheating by distraction and intimidation.
The main message in this month’s article is that
players should be courteous and know the rules, but
most important, play by the rules! Everyone will be
better off and will enjoy the experience.

columns, plus other musings by John Ross at:

USBF NATIONAL MEDALISTS HISTORICAL ARCHIVE
In 2011 the directors of the National Championship Tournament asked us if we could provide a list of all
the medal winners in previous national championships. This list was going to be used to prevent any past medalists
from entering the “B” Open competition at the nationals held at Campo di Bocce in Livermore and Los Gatos. Old
USBF Newsletters and web postings were used to prepare the list. Although we only had complete information dating
back to 1999, a comprehensive list was prepared for the years 1999 to the present and is available in two files on our
web site. One file lists the nationals by year with the winners of each event listed (click here
), and the other lists
medal winners in alphabetical order (click here
).
The lists will be updated to include the 2013 results of the just completed National Championships in Stockton,
Ca. This is where our readers come in! If anyone notices any errors or has complete results for any of the national
championships from 1979 to 1998 please send us the information at [email protected] and we will make
corrections or add these years to the treasure trove of historical data. Right now each file is 20 pages long for the 14
years that we do have data, so we have a long way to go if we can obtain the information for these 20 missing years!

Pensieri e Riflessioni
Thoughts and Reflections by Frank Rivera
KARMA IS NOT MY FRIEND
PAY TO PLAY
It never fails. Whenever I’m in the grocery store
waiting in line to check out, the line I choose is either the
shortest line in the store, or it moves quickly, with my
moving from the last in line to the next customer to check
out fairly quickly. Then my karma kicks in. The customer
directly in front of me has a problem with his credit card,
or can’t find his checkbook, or fumbles through pocket
and purse looking for the exact change. I end up waiting
10 or more minutes to be the next up while I watch all the
people in the other lines pushing their grocery carts out
the door. Karma. Or this; the bigger hurry I am in while
driving from point A to point B is in direct relation to the
number of red lights I get stuck at. Forget about slow
drivers in the fast lane on the highway. They come out of
the woodwork for me. Karma hates me.
As great a sport as bocce is, one of the real joys is
placing in the top four in tournament play. That means
that not only do you get to play a lot of bocce, but at the
end of the day, you get to go home with a little cash in
your pocket. Having never come that close, with the exception of winning a bronze medal in the Bay Area Senior Games, after seven games in the Stockton heat, my
team came in fourth place at the August 17th Western
Sector Open Championships held at IAC. Hello karma. In
this tournament, where medals are awarded instead of
cash prizes, only the first three winning teams received
awards. All was not a loss, though. I got to play seven
games with a great team against some other great
teams. An altogether satisfying day, all in all. But here’s
where I get to turn the tables on karma. My team photo
may not have earned a spot with the photos of winners in
the tournament report, but I am the editor of this newsletter. I pretty much get to put whatever I want in it, so I will
put my team photo right here, karma be damned. Hopefully, karma won’t come back to bite me in the you-knowwhat any time soon.
I strongly support the USBF. I don’t know why everyone who plays serious bocce isn’t a member. I do know
that something happened a number of years ago that
ticked a lot of people off, but that was long ago, relatively
speaking. It isn’t necessary to hash out the details here,
but some people still hold a grudge and refuse to re-join.
Well, as far as I’m concerned, you can hold your grudge
for as long as you want, but you’re missing an awful lot of
great money tournaments if you’re not a member.
I know a guy who bad-mouthed the USBF to me
several months ago, then played in a USBF tournament
recently without joining. A hypocrite? I think so. Most
USBF sanctioned tournament applications have a line
after each team member name to enter membership
numbers, but not all applications do. Maybe we should
resign ourselves to checking names and card numbers to
make sure all who enter a USBF tournament with the
hope of winning some money are actually members. You
would think this shouldn’t be necessary, but I guess
some people will sneak in the door if they can.

Colleen Randazzo sent me the above photo of
Laura and Tony. It’s the only photo I received from the
Northern California Open, played in Martinez on August
17, 2013. Although Colleen requested that more photos
be sent in to me, no more arrived.
I’m happy to put tournament photos and news in
this newsletter from non-member clubs. Spreading the
joy of playing bocce is what we try to do here, but this is
the USBF Western Sector Newsletter, after all. My main
focus is on USBF events. If I should play in a non-USBF
member tournament, I will certainly take my own photos
and put them in the newsletter. But if I don’t play in a non
-member tournament and you want your photos and/or
story to be included, then it’s up to you to send stuff to
me. Ginny Nelson over at Pittsburg did (see page 14).
Want stuff in? Meet me half way; send it to me.

A CHAMPION IN THE MAKING
Special Times At Marin Bocce
By Patti Bassett
When spring arrives
Marin Bocce Federation opens
its courts to Special Olympics. They practice once a
week from mid-March until the
end of June. I have been
coaching the team for 11
years. I noticed when I received my roster that a young
woman
named
Kathryn
Mathews would be with us this
year. I had worked with Special
Olympics bowling for a short
time and knew her from
there. Kathryn is a 23 year old
Kathryn Mathews
quadriplegic and I knew she
could not roll the bocce ball.
Kathryn is a high school and college graduate. When
she was 15 months old she became ill and was in a coma
for 6 weeks. This affected her frontal lobe. The frontal lobe
is associated with speech and muscle movement. They
also learned she had an enzyme deficiency.
I knew what her limitations were, so I called Chuck
Podesta, a very good friend and a man who can fix anything. I had given him a heads up on the situation. Chuck
came to the first practice and was ready to help. Kathryn
tried to roll the balls down her legs but they would not go
far. She became frustrated. Chuck made a prototype of a
ramp the very first practice. The first one was made of
cardboard. By the end of the first practice Kathryn was
able to roll her ball down the ramp. Tears were replaced
with smiles.
Each week at practice, Chuck would return with the
ramp. The second week the ramp was made of PVC pipe
and the balls were roaring down the court too fast. Every
week Chuck would make adjustments to the ramp until it
had the right speed by using foam rubber strips to help
slow the ball down. Kathryn would raise her head and
smile each time she rolled a ball. When she sees Chuck
she lights up.
When it was time to send the team to Martinez to
compete in the regional games, I contacted Special Olympics to arrange a bus. I mentioned that we need one with
wheel chair access for Kathryn and that she would be
bringing her ramp. I was amazed and saddened when they
told me she could not compete with the ramp. The
Mathews family was as surprised as I was. This is Special
Olympics not a USBF tournament for money. I just wanted
her to be able to attend and
participate with the rest of her
friends.
The story of Kathryn and
her ramp has been published
in two newspapers. I plan on
sending the articles to Special
Olympics in Washington along
with letters I have received
from other bocce players stating their feelings on this subject. I can only hope that I can
get the rules changed.

games.

Posse of Four prevailed for the second year in a row at the 8th Annual Woodland Park Bocce Classic held Aug
3 in Seattle. Grass courts with no sideboards give this tournament a distinctly more informal feel than most, and a
barbecue and potluck augmented that mood.
Fourteen veteran and novice teams began round robin play in the morning under gray skies. The cool weather
turned to sun in the afternoon for the eight teams in the single elimination final, and for an alternate tournament open
to the six teams that fell short in morning play. Also for the second year in a row, the team captained by Bre Zitzka,
this time under the name Hasta Luego, finished second to Posse of Four.
Woodland Park Bocce Club member Paul Volpone of Better Meats donated the sausages. Barbecue master
Steve Kemberling grilled them to perfection.
In other news, Clem Zipp is Lord Bocce 2013 at Woodland Park. This title goes to the Club Champion in a singles tournament that progresses throughout the summer as challengers work their way through the bracket. Clem
played his last three matches on Sunday, Aug. 4, defeating Chris Henry 12-10 in the final to take the crown. Chuck
Just finished third.

Los Gatos Bocce Club
17th Annual Open Tournament
Saturday, August 3, 2013
17th or 3rd?
It Depends On Whose Counting
By Frank Rivera
The Los Gatos Bocce Club held their 17th
Annual Open Tournament on Saturday, August 3,
2013, but for me and my wife Cynthia, this was only
our third year. One might wonder why I would even
take notice of this but for this simple reason: this
tournament was our first venture into a USBF tournament that we played in. So this year was our third
USBF anniversary, so to speak. Our first time, we
walked into Campo di Bocce in Los Gatos knowing
only a few people. When we left at the end of the
day, we had made a bunch of new friends.
Yeah….bocce people are like that; very friendly.
This year, our third year, we were teammates
with Tournament Director John Ross and his wife
Andrea. Somewhat of a leap for us, going from
brand new people in 2011 to teammates with the
director and his wife. And, unlike 2011, when we
knew very few people, this year there were only a
very few people we didn’t know.
There were sixteen teams this year, and the
competition was stiff. The round-robin format kept us
quite busy all morning, jumping from one court to
another with very little time to catch our breath in
between games. The rapid fire jump from game to
game was quite exhilarating. We were so busy, in
fact, that I was unable to take as many photographs
as I would have liked. I took only a few before lunch.
After lunch, when the playoffs were all on the outdoor courts, I had all the time I needed.
I apologize to all the indoor players whom I
didn’t get to “shoot” this year, but hopefully, I will get
your photos next year at the 18th annual tournament….. or the 4th as I see it.

Aiello - Belecci Memorial
4 person open bocce tournament
Saturday, august 3, 2013
On August 3, 2013, the Pittsburg Bocce Federation hosted its annual Aiello-Belleci Memorial Tournament. This event honors two men, Andy Aiello and Jerry Belleci. Their devotion and
efforts brought the game of bocce to the City of Pittsburg. They were dedicated to establishing
and maintaining the game of bocce in the City of Pittsburg as a fun, family oriented game, with a
dash of competition thrown in.
Andy’s wife, Vicky; son, Nick; and daughter, Margaret were among the participants in the
tournament.
The day was beautiful and enjoyed by all players. Although only 14 teams were in the
event, the day was a long one – 10 hours from start to finish. Lunch and long, long games filled
in the time.
A big thank you to Kelly Moriarty for taking pictures of the teams that placed.

2013 USBF Western Sector Championships
Saturday, August 17, 2013
Italian Athletic Club, Stockton, Ca.
By Penn Martin
A baker’s dozen of thirteen teams arrived on Saturday August 17 for the USBF Western Sector Championships held in Stockton, CA at the Italian Athletic Club
(IAC). It was fitting that the tournament was held at this
esteemed venue, not long after the USBF National
Championships were there earlier this year in June.
The IAC in Stockton might be considered the epicenter of bocce ball in California. It has produced many
National championship quality teams over the decades
and is the home court of some of the best players in the
country.
I still remember the first time I walked into the IAC.
It was the day of my first bocce tournament in Stockton
in 2010. Four players from what was later to become the
Nevada County Bocce club: Paulo, Stefano, Leonardo
and I, well, we got our clocks cleaned that day. We lost
every game at the tournament over at the Waterloo club.
We were then lifted out of despair by an act of wonderful
hospitality shown us by Romano Lotti. He invited us to
come over to the IAC and showed us around, demonstrating Punto Raffa Volo and giving us some pointers
and encouragement. I was stunned at all the pictures on
the wall of national caliber teams and the aura of bocce
history that surrounds the IAC, and will never forget how
gracious Romano was
The Nevada County Bocce Club fielded two teams
with help from Nancy Martignago of Stockton and Jim
Fellos of Sacramento to lend them some experience and
grace under pressure. Six NC Bocce Club players
showed up in their new club shirts after a long drive in
the wee hours of the morning.
Love those new shirts, fellas!
Tournament play was divided into two rounds, with
three divisions, red, green and blue, each playing a qualifying round robin to determine the eight teams that advanced to a single elimination second phase of the tournament.

The Italian Athletic Club in Stockton, California
While the tournament field at the Western Sector
Championships this year was a bit small and comprised
mostly of Northern Californians, many talented and experienced players were jostling to see who would walk
away with this year’s winner’s jackets. Players from the
Sopranos, Stromboli, the Lady Sopranos and Team Pro
were all coming off strong showings at the Nationals and
ready to roll.
One ball left to get point.

Winning Teams
Gold—N. C. Bocce 1
From left: Penn Martin, Nancy Martignago,
Captain Stefano Landini and Paolo Cipullo
The green division proved to be strongest, with
three of its four teams placing first, second and third in the
tournament. In that section, NC Bocce team 1 first played
Team Pro, and to the surprise of all, won 12-6. That game
would prove to be a harbinger of things to come. They then
played the Lady Sopranos in their closest game of the day,
and squeaked by 12-10.
The eight teams that made it past the qualifying
round were Sopranos, Mezzanotte Luna, NC Bocce 1, Che
Sera Sera, Team Pro, Stars and Stripes, Lady Sopranos,
and Stromboli.
In the quarter and semi-finals, Stars and Stripes and
Mezzanotte Luna also fell to NC Bocce team 1, who then
went on to play the Lady Sopranos again in the finals. The
Lady Sopranos had defeated the Sopranos to advance earlier and the ladies then triumphed over Team Pro. Team Pro
went on to take third when they dispatched Mezzanotte Luna.
…………………………
The final game was won 12-3 by NC Bocce team 1,
with Stefano Landini, Paolo Cipullo and Penn Martin anchored by Nancy Martignago of Stockton with her very accurate lagging. Sighs of relief, tears of joy and gasps of
amazement flowed from Nancy and the newcomers as they
tried to comprehend what had just happened, really? undefeated??!!
I’ll say that NC Bocce team 1 was very relieved not
to have played Vern, David, Bob and Kurtis of the Sopranos
who have sent us home from school with only a few points
on many occasions before.
That said, kudos to all who participated in the Western Sector Championships with some great play, and even
more importantly, gracious hospitality and sportsmanship!

DAVID CAMARDO THE ARTIST
Many of us know David Camardo to be a great guy with a funny sense of humor.
He is a good man to know and play bocce with. His bocce skills put him in the company with some of the best players in the Western Sector. What a lot of us don’t
know is that he is also an accomplished sketch artist. In two past issues, we presented a number of his pieces of artwork. This month, we present the last seven
from our collection. Hopefully, David has more in his personal collection he’d like to
share with us in the future
Q: How did black sheep get such a bad rap?
A: Their wool is harder to dye than the wool of white sheep.

If you’ve never been a member of the United States Bocce Federation, now is the time to join.
The Western Sector has reinstated it’s $5 membership fee for first time members. With tournaments almost every weekend, you can’t ask for a better value than that.
