Be the Change is a national day of service, coordinated by South Asian Americans Leading Together (SAALT), that is held on campuses and in cities across the country. The event is based on Mahatma Gandhi’s inspirational quote, “You must be the change you wish to see in the world,” and provides opportunities for South Asians to give back to their communities. In 2009, over 3,000 people contributed 6,000 service hours in 70 cities and campuses across the country. What are the goals of Be the Change? • Encourage South Asians and others nationwide to collectively engage in community service • Identify and develop leaders in the South Asian community across the country • Foster effective partnerships with local and national organizations • Build unity and collaboration within the South Asian community in the United States What is the theme of Be the Change 2010? This year’s theme for Be the Change is “Leading the Movement,” which showcases how individuals give back to their communities in the spirit of service and their commitment to creating lasting change beyond Be The Change 2010. This is an opportunity for South Asians across the United States to engage in collective public service activities that will lead to further civic engagement, collaboration, and unity. A gritty bit of reality that not many of us living in India want to face up to, a defense mechanism that we have to employ in order to carry about our daily lives is to desensitize ourselves to this poverty all around us. numbers keep growing everyday. It takes the better part of the morning. Then a fresh lunch is prepared in their small rented kitchen, cooked by 4 people and handdelivered to the destitutes. Dinner preparations begin right after lunch rounds; their day ends only around mid-night after Krishnan and crew fill up water in the discarded mineral water bottles he collected However, Narayanan Krishnan is not like the rest of us. In June 2002, a hotel management graduate with a lucrative job offer from pristine Switzerland, Krishnan was visiting his parents in his hometown of Madurai in South India when he had a life altering experience. He saw a homeless mentally ill and extremely hungry man eating his own human waste. Unable to turn away, Krishnan gave him some food, a little water and through blinding tears in the man’s grateful eyes and his own, vowed to make this his lifelong mission. He quit his job and relocated to Madurai .Hailing from an affluent family, he started delivery food packets to 30 mentally ill, old homeless people with his own personal savings. Soon his parents realized that he was on a mission and built a small makeshift kitchen in their own backyard. The seeds of Akshaya were sown. This was Krishnan’s calling. From such very humble beginnings, Krishnan and his small group of committed volunteers has served a mind boggling 1.5 million meals to destitutes - mentally sick, forsaken by families, living and dying on the streets of Madurai. He has “adopted” 400 such destitute men and women, each of whom he knows not just by name but like a protective care-giver knows their personality, providing them with not just the lifeline of food and water but also rehabilitating, whichever way he can. Most of all he gives these homeless people a sense of dignity in their life, something their own families and life circumstances have denied them. Akshaya is a unique organization – completely transparent and law abiding - every single receipt is carefully preserved and every single rupee accounted for by meticulous volunteer accountants – a rarity even amongst the most ethical corporations. To get an idea of the magnitude of the commitment and effort, consider this – Krishnan and his crew start their day at 4 AM, preparing breakfast and delivering them to 400 destitutes and the www.CityMasala.com CityMasalaSept2010.indd 10 from hotels earlier in the day. What a monumental effort for a small volunteer driven 10 September 2010 8/22/2010 11:14:09 PM organization, at the whopping cost of Rs.15,000 a day. This has been played out every single day, 3 times a day since June 2002. Heart-wrenching events pan out everyday – an old, sick man whom Krishnan serves is found lifeless one day when Krishnan is on his rounds. A homeless, mentally disabled woman is found pregnant once again, her helpless condition selfless, unassuming Krishnan. taken advantage of by unscrupulous elements in the society. Krishnan will have yet another young mouth to feed. Such is the burden on this young 29-year-old As Akshaya’s efforts continue in building a shelter for the destitute, the cost of sustaining such an endeavor has also gone September 2010 CityMasalaSept2010.indd 11 up. A 2.74 acre, land has been purchased in Madurai for the “home”, construction is in progress and funds coming in from inspired people near and far. Learn more about the AKSHAYA trust at www.akshayatrust. org. As on Aug 2010, Akshaya is awaiting 501c3 status in the U.S. May the noble work of AKSHAYA continue – the neverending eternal vessel that would endow dignity to those that are unfortunate? 11 www.CityMasala.com 8/22/2010 11:16:28 PM Love Your Feet! By: Savneet Singh Feet are one of the most receptive parts of the body. Treat your feet with tender loving care and they will reward you with years of diligent, pain free service. Follow simple ways to tend to them and have happy, healthy feet forever. Consistent and proper care of anything - be it your face, hair, hands or feet- pays high dividends in the long run. You will stay more youthful-looking and be more comfortable to boot! Home pedicure Pedicure is a wonderful way to pamper yourself with a little TLC. It is beautification and relaxation rolled into one treatment. Do-it-yourself pedicure Procedure Set aside an hour one evening per week to treat your feet. Surround yourself with all the supplies so you don’t have to keep getting up and dripping water all over the house. • Here are a few tips to keep your feet healthy. • Wash your feet daily. Make sure to clean between the toes and under the nails. • Complete dry your feet after bathing. Dry between the toes diligently. Damp feet are a breeding ground for bacteria and odor. • Step-1: A good soak. A footbath is often just as relaxing or stimulating as a full body bath. Add enough hot or cold water or herbal tea of your choice to your foot spa so that it covers your ankles, plus a few drops of essential oil or one tablespoon of bleach to disinfect, and a squirt of liquid soap or shower gel. Swish them together. Soak your feet for five to ten minutes to cleanse and soften calluses. Use this time to scrub dirty toenails and soles. • Step-2: After soaking, gently remove calluses with pediwand, rasp, pumice stone or if you must, very carefully use callus trimmer. File down any corns you may have with an emery board. • Step-3: Dry feet when finished and remove any chipped nail polish now. • Step-4: Try any good Skin Exfloliator to scrub off any leftover rough skin on you lower legs area, ankles and feet. It feels fantastic. • Step-5: Rinse and then dry legs and feet with a coarse towel. • To help prevent dry, cracked skin on the feet, massage a good thick lotion into your feet before you dress and again when you go to bed. • Add a little foot powder to your shoes each day to help absorb perspiration. • Wear fresh socks or hosiery daily. • Clip your toenails straight across to help avoid ingrown toenails. Smooth nail edges with an emery board or nail file. • Step-6: Coax back cuticles with an orange stick and trim the ragged ones. • Drink lots of water. • Inspect your feet daily for blisters, corn, swelling, calluses and any other problems. Get appropriate treatment right away. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. • Step-7: Trim toenails straight across rather than rounded at the corners so that the white free edge is almost even with the top of the toe. File toenails to smooth all jagged edges. • Give your shoes a rest. Alternating pairs allows shoes to completely dry out and give the padding time to return to its normal shape. This helps shoes last longer as well as keep your feet healthier. • Step-8: Apply foot cream, any foot lotion or oil and massage in thoroughly for two to three minutes on each foot. • Step-9: Before polishing your toenails, use a non-acetone remover to remove all traces of lotion or cream. Now slick on a base coat and two coats of your favorite color, followed by a top coat. There is nothing like freshly painted, glossy, perfectly pedicured toes to pick your spirits up and make you feel pretty. • Step-10: After your polish dries, apply your favorite powder to your legs and feet using a large puff or fluff brush. • Give yourself a weekly feet treatment. Massage your feet with warmed oil mixed with a few drops of essential oil of lavender, eucalyptus, or peppermint, to help de-stress as well as relax your sore feet. • If you are overweight, exercise and eat healthy to lose some pounds. Excess weight adds enormous pressure on your feet. • Walk, walk, walk. www.CityMasala.com CityMasalaSept2010.indd 12 12 September 2010 8/23/2010 3:32:02 PM CityMasalaSept2010.indd 13 8/22/2010 9:18:06 PM CityMasalaSept2010.indd 14 8/23/2010 6:46:16 PM Perez & Associates Neelofer Syed Immigration Attorney With offices in Tampa and Orlando To Schedule an Appointment, Please call (813)254-8472 Tampa (407)692-9878 Orlando Email: [email protected] • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • I-130 Petitions and Family Based Green Cards (Permanent Residence) I-140 Petitions and Employment Based Green Cards (Permanent Residence) U.S. Citizenship Applications PERM (Labor Certification) Fiancé Visas (K-1/K-2, K-3/K-4) Temporary Employment Visas (H-1B, H-3, TN, E-3) Entertainment Visas (P-1, P-2, P-3) Extraordinary Ability (O-1, O-2) Consular Processing through National Visa Center J-1 Waivers Intra Company Transferee Visas (L-1A, L-1B) Treaty Trader/Investor Visas (E-1, E-2) Immigrant Investor Visa (EB-5) Asylum Applications and Battered Spouse Petitions; U and T Visas Representation in Removal Proceedings before Immigration Court and Board of Immigration Appeals. That was one of the most memorable moments of my life! After this performance I started fighting my way through my career as I wasn’t born into the industry, luckily I started receiving interesting projects that launched my career as an action hero. CM: Did you always want to act? AK: When I was a kid I could only dream of becoming an actor, I used to stand in massive crowds just to get Mr Amitabh Bachchan’s autograph, now I play his son in movies, but really it was martial arts I was into majorly. When the opportunity came up to act though, I couldn’t say no! I certainly have no regrets, to be able to fulfill my passion for sport and martial arts in my films was a much broader way of teaching kids and living the life I dreamed of and inspiring more people than I could ever imagine... CM: How did you get into acting? AK: Well, as you can guess after what I just told you, I started in this industry by pure luck! I was doing some modeling on my return from Bangkok when someone thought I was cute, apparently, and I just thought: why not? So I got the funniest and may I add the cheapest portfolio done and worked my way up from there. Luckily, I was chosen to play the lead in my debut film ‘Saugandh’, back in 199, something I will never forget. This was the beginning of my career as an actor and the rest is history... in the making! (smiles) CM: What was the toughest part when breaking into Bollywood? CM: Please tell us a little bit about your background. AK: Well... where should I start? Long story short, I was born in Amritsar, India. After college, I studied martial arts in Bangkok, one of my biggest passions, while working as a chef. Later on, I started teaching martial arts and strangely was considered for Modeling. After a couple of months I was offered my first www.CityMasala.com 16 CityMasalaSept2010.indd 16 AK: Possibly the fact, that I had no mentor to guide me to make the right decisions. Not coming from an acting dynasty is tough but very rewarding if you get it right. I had to find my own way, to an extent, but the experiences help build both my career and my character. CM: Do you have formal training in acting? AK: No, when I left college there weren’t many academies September 2010 8/23/2010 12:33:47 PM to study acting, that’s why I decided to go into martial arts. Because of this, I had to work flat out to get a place in the industry and I must say that I’m still learning - it’s an ongoing process – particularly as I try to push my boundaries and challenge my abilities with every project I sign. CM: What do you attribute your success to? can show him the world and he’s only 7! CM: Does Twinkle have any plans to get back into acting? Would you ever star together in a movie? AK: I would really love to be with her in a movie but it’s not on her mind to go back into acting right now. She is focusing on her own career path and making a huge success of her interior designing. AK: My dad - I would be nothing if it wasn’t for him, his priceless guidance was what helped make me. Yes, CityMasala readers, once again we have immense to tell you about the latest happenings in Tinseltown. Naturally, there is gossip, masala and movies but in addition to the usual news; there have been sightings of stars all over the world. Aamir Khan has been globetrotting promoting his upcoming production Peepli [Live] while Shah Rukh Khan is all over London shooting for RA.One. Karan Johar is busy scripting his next film. However amidst all that, there is much gupshup! Priyanka Chopra has no voice. Yes, you heard right! The normally chatty actress has found herself sans her vocal chords. After exhausting her vocal chords during a shoot for Saat Khoon Maaf, Priyanka Chopra has officially lost her voice. Three days ago the actress woke up and was probably calling for her morning chai when she realized her awaaz was totally gone. The day before, the actress has been shooting for Vishal Bhardwaj’s Saat Khoon Maaf for a scene that required her to scream. The perfectionist that Bhardwaj is, he was not satisfied with the first few screams and required Priyanka to give the shot a couple of more attempts. Finally, she got it right only to tire her vocal chords. Chopra ran to the doctors and was immediately told that she needed to completely rest her vocal chords for the next week or so. For the film, Priyanka will be romancing seven men including Neil Nitin Mukesh, Naseeruddin Shah, Irrfan Khan and the newbie Vivaan Shah. Post Saat Khoon Maaf, she will be working on Don 2. In the coming months, you can see Chopra in Anjaana Anjaani with Ranbir Kapoor. August will mark Kajol’s birthday and while there will be a big bash to bring in her special day, the family has decided that they will celebrate her godh bharai too. In true Maharashtrian style, the family will observe the necessary ceremonies as well as her birthday. This will be followed by a family lunch for the Mukherjees and Devgans together. “Mom has planned a puja and will gift her a sari, as is the custom. She will also be preparing food for Kads as that is a part of the ritual. We will follow all the customs attached to the dhole ceremony. All of us will be attired in traditional wear,” exclaimed Tannisha Mukherjee, Kajol’s sister. As for presents, Tannisha has already picked up a fancy gift for her sister during a recent trip to Greece for a friend’s wedding. “I picked up this funky necklace with lava rocks for her,” she divulged. But the younger sister is also planning a sweet treat for her older sister as well. “I plan to bake a huge fruitcake for Kads.” Happy Birthday Kajol! We wish you a fabulous year ahead! After Arshad Warsi, Shilpa Shetty and Amitabh Bachchan, it is now Salman Khan who will be adorning the host cap since he has been selected to become the next host of the popular Indian reality show, Bigg Boss. Initially sources claimed that it was going to be Shah Rukh Khan who would host the show, however, Colors, the official channel for Bigg Boss has come out and announced that it will be Sallu and not SRK who will play presenter of the show. “Salman Khan has been finalized as the host of the next season. We will announce the development officially soon,” was the official statement from the channel. Previously, the toss up was between SRK and Akshay Kumar. The channel was in the midst of talks with both actors, however, things didn’t seem to materialize and thus, Salman was approached. Old news on the block is that Amitabh Bachchan has signed on to be a part of Kaun Banega Crorepati 4 which will be in competition with Bigg Boss. In case you’re wondering where Sonam Kapoor is, the actress is busy shooting with Shahid Kapoor for Mausam in Scotland. And when she was asked to kiss Shahid for a scene, she flatly refused. Apparently, the kiss never existed and was added when Shahid insisted on a kiss scene between the actors. Naturally, the director Pankaj Kapoor, found himself in quite a dilemma and immediately phoned Anil Kapoor in hopes that papa would be able to sway his daughter in to obliging to the kiss. However, Sonam refused to budge. According to sources, it was not Pankaj’s idea but actually Shahid’s input to the script. “It was at Shahid’s behest that a kissing scene was created. He put forth the idea to his father who complied with his request. Shahid feels that like Aamir Khan, he too should kiss all his heroines. He felt it would add more passion to the scene,” claimed a source. While Sonam maintains that there is and was never a kissing scene, thus deeming the news as “fabricated”, sources from the set claim otherwise. “When Sonam realized that it was her hero’s demand, she became even more adamant about not doing the kiss and was in no mood to listen to anyone on the subject,” they said. Most interesting is that Sonam will be kissing Abhay Deol in her home production Aisha while Shahid has kissed Kareena Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Anushka Sharma in various films. And with that, I am all Bollywooded out! The heat is on as we are officially six months in 2010. In the coming months you can expect much more heat from the biggest film industry in the world. In last month’s article, you read ideas related to the concepts of awareness and knowledge. That article concluded with an understanding that efforts, however small or large, if directed with awareness will lead to knowledge and thence will yield the best result for oneself and humanity. In this month’s article, we will take a deeper look into a specific and very basic type of awareness emphasized in the vedas. is at its very basic level an instrument, just like a calculator. Of course, it is much, much, much more sophisticated and powerful than a calculator. But, at its essence, it is a tool. It is a tool used to experience and interact with the world, much like a calculator. And yet, once we become engrossed in using it, we forget the difference between it and our true self. We identify with the sensory and mental experience of the brain and claim that we are that experience. We take on different roles based on those experiences and fight tooth and nail to prove or disprove those experiences as validity of our being. We constantly act as those things that our calculator brings to our experience. We call this experience our reality. Furthermore, we simply think of ourselves as the one who are the body and the ego, both of which, for humans are defined by the experience of the instrument called the brain. So, we are not at all different from that child who mistook himself for the calculator. Are we really like that child who is identified and fixated on being the calculator? Or is there a different reality? Is it a reality that is perhaps not limited by the experiences of the senses or the ego? Or is it a reality that pervades those boundaries and brings us closer to an absolute and eternal reality? You make the call after you read below. Awareness can mean many different things to many people based on their perspective. To a child, for example, it may mean staying alert for something unknown. Whereas to an adult, it may simply mean to stay focused. In Vedic concepts, the idea of awareness is taken to a different height. Vedas refer to the awareness of one’s ‘true self’ as the highest form of awareness. Hence, the derivation of the term ‘self-realization’ and the ever-mystical question, “who am I?” The vedas point out that our existence in daily life is limited by our senses and our ego. For example, most of us are functioning at a level of awareness created by our physical/material senses and by our mind’s impression of who we are. That is, we are either focused in our awareness upon the look, taste and feel of material objects as we experience them using our five senses of taste, touch, vision, sight, and smell. It is these senses that tie up our desires to acquire that which is best looking, best tasting or, perhaps, feels the softest; or, on the other hand, we are focused in our awareness upon the status or title that we identify with. This is in the form of our ego. “I am a kind doctor” or “I am a pretty woman, when I walk, I turn all the heads.” This ties us up with a sense of self that is manufactured by the ego. We are constantly trying to create or maintain this sense of self. Hence, the world that we experience in these physical/material and mental/ego realms is referred to as Maya. It is real at the level of the experience only. It is neither permanent nor absolute. It is fleeting and relative. If we are to work towards realizing our true self, then it must be done through means outside of the physical and mental/emotional sense of self. Only then can we know our true self, absolutely and purely. Which raises the question, “How does one go about doing this?” Well, it’s easier said and much harder done. But, I assure you, if practiced, many among us already do it. It requires awareness, intentional effort and serious commitment. I can tell you as one on the path, not as one who has reached the destination. You already have some sense of that awareness from reading this article. If it sounds more attractive than the reality of your daily experiential life, then it demands your intentional effort and commitment. Let’s take a look at the following example for clarity. Let’s say we give a calculator to a 2 year old child. It’s a regular calculator that performs the usual addition, subtraction, multiplication and division that the child initially uses as a teether, and then as a toy with buttons to press, and then learns to read the numbers and eventually, by high school, uses it to solve complex mathematical problems that would take someone three days to calculate without a calculator. Well, something funny happens along the way to this point in the child’s life. You see, he has been using this calculator so much and that he has done so much math over the years that he becomes thoroughly identified with the calculator. He actually starts to think that he is himself, in fact, the calculator. He thinks he’s the buttons with the numbers on it. He even takes special pride in telling everyone about his bright digital readout screen that gives answers to any mathematical problem to the eighth decimal place. He really forgets that he’s a person and can only function in the world with the awareness that he is a calculator. Go figure. Is that really possible? Can someone mistake their identity for a calculator? Absurd, you must be thinking. How can someone mix themselves up with a calculator? Well, let’s take a look. Let’s see how close we come to thinking that we are a calculator in our own daily life. After all, our brain www.CityMasala.com CityMasalaSept2010.indd 20 20 Remember, this is the awareness you can learn to maintain by practice. Through it, you will acquire the necessary experiences and the knowledge that will grant you a rewarding and self-sustaining living. You need not abandon your current life. Just live it with this awareness. The rest will fall into place automatically. First, keep thinking about your sensory experiences as being separate from who you are as your true self. Do not become identified with the taste you taste and the clothes you feel next to your skin or get complimented upon by others. Be gracious, thank the person who compliments but maintain the awareness that you are neither the clothes nor the tasty food. Then, simultaneously, be aware that the thoughts that you are thinking about yourself and about the world that you call reality are also not your true self. You are neither the physical nor the ego. Both of those are experiences that your senses and your mind bring to you. They are not your total awareness. Your true self is separate from both. And that’s it. As you see, if you remove your sensory and mental experiences from misidentifying you, then all that is left is your true self. And being in constant touch with that self and living your daily life as that self is the true joy of life. Your experiences will be richer and your existence lighter and stress-free. Good luck and Namaste. September 2010 8/22/2010 9:51:59 PM CityMasalaSept2010.indd 21 8/22/2010 9:38:53 PM Healthy Living Guilt Free Diet By: Alpa M.Patel Two months ago, I drastically changed my diet...for good. I add the “for good” because I have made the healthy diet pledge before and then gone back to my hamburger-pizza-cupcake eating ways. This time, I have vowed to stop eating all meat except fish and to attempt to stop all dairy consumption. I say “attempt” for the latter because I have stopped using dairy in the home, but have found it nearly impossible to do so outside the home. Yes, I am not trying hard enough. Eventually, I will be strong enough to go all the way and stop consuming fish and dairy as well, but for now my main goal remains to relieve years of guilty eating. We all know that the cattle industry is doing disgusting things and it certainly smacks you right in the face when you read about it, but then we return to our normal lives and avert our eyes. Fast forward through many years of meat consumption to my., now, husband’s and my gluttonous engagement trip to Australia. We did not and could not control ourselves from indulging in Barramundi, John Dory, fresh grass-fed beef, even kangaroo meat (as despicable as that made me feel). We returned home and vowed to get fit for the wedding. That led to us drawing up a “DON’T” list of foods, including beef, poultry, pork, pasta, bread, rice, potatoes, and desserts. Needless to say, we were fit and trim for our wedding thanks to this low-carb and fish and veggie friendly diet. That lasted about two days into our honeymoon. I came back ten pounds heavier and back on the meat bandwagon. I have never wanted to be a vegetarian. I loved meat. I ate meat at least once a day. I dismissed the whole idea of vegetarianism. Perhaps it is because my mom has cooked such sumptuous chicken curry and juicy Thanksgiving turkey and mouth-watering spaghetti bolognese my entire life. This is ironic because my mom was a strict vegetarian while growing up in India. She didn’t eat eggs but did drink buffalo milk. That changed after she married my father at the age of 23. In the beginning, she was cooking chicken and fish without tasting it, but eventually she succumbed to the omnivore’s ways. It is hard to resist the pull of slow smoked pulled pork. When my brother and I were in grade school, beef was introduced into the household. We were full-fledged Americans at that point. mmm, McDonald’s. About three months ago, both my husband and I read Eating Animals by Jonathan Safran Foer. It was eyeopening and emotional in a way previous books on the topic had not been. The author mentions that he faced the reality of his diet when he was expecting his first child and that is what hit home with me. I spend and inordinate amount of effort and hours every week in providing my 17 month old son a remarkable healthy diet. His weekly diet consists of quinoa, barley, brown rice, lentils, mung beans, every bean you can imagine, and steamed vegetables. I do not even use seasonings apart from low sodium vegetable broth once in a while. One mother came up to us as I was feeding him quinoa, zucchini, and avocado and stared in disbelief. The kid made a yucky face when I tried to give him chocolate milk once. He spit out a french fry the one time I tried that. If it’s possible for me to raise a healthy eater, it is certainly possible for me to be a healthy eater. I gave up beef when I went away to college. I had no religious or political or health reasons for doing so. I just thought it sounded right. This was not difficult because there were a lot of food choices at our dining hall. Every week there was an international themed menu, as well as, an odd-looking, crusted vegan bar, which I stayed away from due to its foreign nature. My anti-beef pledge lasted five years. A year out of college, I was at a barbeque in San Francisco and a friend offered me a bite of his hamburger by waving it in my face. I replied, “I don’t eat beef,” so he promptly and respectfully moved the burger away. However, the smell or look must have been too much because I said, “I’ll take a bite.” Thus, began a two-week beef binge during which I ate burgers, meatloaf, roast beef, and filet mignon nonstop. I could not believe how much I had missed the taste of beef. Although I didn’t eat it often, it was back on the menu. Even with my recent diet changes, my goal was not to become a vegetarian or vegan although the slow changes I’ve been making do seem to be leading me to that enlightened path. The practices of factory farming are horrific for the animals and unhealthy for us consumers. I cannot live with such unconscionable guilt. When I look at my son, I see that I do care about what we are putting in our mouths. Not only do I care about my food consumption, I know how to eat well and it makes me feel better to eat well. If I couldn’t eat healthy while living in San Francisco where people linger for hours over meals consisting of alfalfa sprouts and avocados, I certainly was not going to change when I moved to New York City where steakhouses are the favored restaurants. But, soon after moving to New York City, I read Fast Food Nation and promptly stopped eating beef ... for four months. www.CityMasala.com CityMasalaSept2010.indd 22 I can do with a little less guilt in my life. 22 September 2010 8/23/2010 2:24:42 PM MEN & WOMEN Laser Hair Removal • Skin Rejuvenation FREE CONSULTATION Debi Stillwell, C.C.E, CME, Laser Technician • Advanced Dual ALEX/ND YAG Cynosure Laser Treatment • Procedure Performed by Laser Certified Professional • Physician Supervised 727-343-9004 Meena Jain M.D., FACOG 3275 66th Street North • Suite #7 St. Petersburg, FL 33710 Bringing the World of Real Estate to Your Doorstep Extraordinary Service for Extraordinary People Rozina Chandrani Future Home Realty Cell: 813-810-4176 [email protected] Short Sales budget. By: Neelofer Syed, ESQ The topic of this article has been previously touched upon in my columns, directly or not so directly. This time, it was indeed a question from a reader which triggered the need to address this issue more specifically. IMMIGRATION Question: “Hi Legal Corner, I am a devoted fan of CityMasala and I am especially in tuned with the Legal Corner. I have a few questions. I am a US citizen married to an "Undocumented" illegal immigrant with a child. Is there anything that can be done to try and obtain my husband's status here in the USA . My husband has obtained a tax ID number and we have documentation (taxes) proving he has been paying taxes here in the USA for at least 8-10 years. So there is absolutely nothing that can be done? We have gotten some advise from legal representation and we were advised nothing can be done so far. We were also told that if we try to do something there is a possibility that a 10 year ban can be placed. So out of fear we don’t want to do anything. Do you have any advice for us? Thanks,” (name withheld for privacy) Answer: First of all it is important to determine exactly what you meant by using the term “undocumented” illegal immigrant. The term is sometimes confusing as it is used interchangeably (by common people), it is important that we ensure we are referring to the similar meaning. Some people use the term undocumented alien to refer to people who initially entered the U.S. legally but later failed to maintain status and as such have been acquiring unlawful presence ever since. On the other hand, the term is used by some others to refer to those individuals who entered U.S illegally i.e. sneaked in through the border without getting inspected. In other words their entry was neither legal nor fraudulent they just crossed the border without having being inspected by the Custom Border Patrol. If your husband had made his initial entry in the U.S. legally but has just stayed on beyond his authorized stay then he is most certainly eligible for adjusting his status while staying in the U.S. The process of adjustment of status, which will also require filing of the immediate relative petition simultaneously as part of the process, should not take more than 4-5 months of time from the date of filing. www.CityMasala.com CityMasalaSept2010.indd 24 24 On the other hand, if your husband falls in the latter category and he sneaked in through the border without getting inspected at all then, yes, you do have a problem. Current law does not have any relief available for people who entered without inspection, irrespective of the fact that they may have a U.S citizen spouse, children or other strong ties in the U.S. The only EXCEPTION to this general rule is those people who fall under the protection of 245(i). In such a situation even if you, being an immediate relative, file a petition for him (based on which he will seek adjustment) he will not be allowed to adjust his status while in the U.S. but will be sent back to his home country to re enter the United States via consular processing. On the other hand, the minute he leaves the United States he will be subject to a bar on re entry for 10 year. However, if he is a beneficiary of any petition filed for him prior to April 30, 2001, he does not have to go through all of this and he may be able to adjust while living in the U.S. If your husband is someone who entered without inspection, and does not qualify for 245 (i) benefit, then he can acquire permanent residency through consular processing not adjustment. Consular processing, however, will not be easy as he will be facing the bar on re entry. The only way for him to overcome the bar will be though a Hardship Waiver. Hardship waiver is something which you as his spouse will have to file with the U.S. consulate in his home country. You will need to identify all the reasons showing extreme hardship on you and your children if your husband is not allowed to return. Whether the waiver is granted or not will depend upon how strong a case you have presented and what is the extent of your hardship. If I knew additional/specific details about your situation, I would have been able to go in specific details in terms of what to do and how to strategize your husband’s case. Nevertheless, with the limited information, the above details should be able to address the basic issues present in your husband’s case. By: Asha Deshpande As I continue to travel down memory lane of twenty-five years in Tampa Bay, my mind keeps going back to the milestones that marked the way. I have written about cultural events and how strangers turned into friends. I have commented on travel and communication. As I pause by the milestone of communication, a smile creases my face. Transatlantic communication was something that required the help of mechanical tools, like telephones and telegrams. It needed no new learning skills. But how about communicating with our newly acquired American neighbors? That sure required quite a bit of learning. I am not talking about the accent. I am talking about the language itself. Most of the Indians who had immigrated to the US were pretty fluent in English but the American lingo was a whole different story! Kal ( Yesterday) : It was not uncommon in those days to hear the comment , “You speak very good English” . “Yes”, most of us would politely reply, “ India was ruled by the British for a while. They left us with the gift of their language.” This would pave the way for further conversation. One of the first things I learnt was the definition of a dwelling. In India, it was, and still is, common to say, “Come to my house”, meaning, “Come home”. I had casually invited some one in such a way. When I started to give her directions, she said, “ But, that is an apartment complex. I thought you said you lived in a house?” Apartment (Flat), Condominium (Ownership flat) or house, they all meant, “Home” to us. Now I was beginning to understand the difference. It was in the office of this apartment complex that I learnt to decipher the double negatives of the American language. Being bored at home, and looking for something to do, I had offered to volunteer in the office. One morning, the manager left me alone for a while. “Stay here” she said, “Don’t do nothing till I get back”. I looked around. I didn’t really know anything, but I didn’t want to do nothing. So, I did some filing. I straightened her desk. I had obviously done something wrong, because she came in, took a look and said “Why did you do that? Didn’t I say don’t do nothing?” How could I have known that what she meant was “Don’t do anything!” Sometimes we would have small baby-sitting camps in the office area. I was asked to participate in their “Show and Tell” activity. One of the children had brought in a cute stuffed cat. Eager to show off my knowledge of Mother Goose rhymes, I took the stuffed cat. Standing in the center of the circle, I said, “This is a Pussy cat.” I recited the rhyme, Pussy cat, Pussy cat where have you been? I’ve been to London to visit the Queen. Pussy cat, Pussy cat, what did you there? I frightened a little mouse, under her chair! I barely got to that line, when one of the women came rushing in. She snatched the cat from my hands. “This is a Kitty cat” she said and glared at me. I had no idea why she was so angry, but at that moment, I’ll bet I was more frightened than the poor mouse under the queen’s chair! To this day I am glad that she was not around when I asked a child for a rubber. “Eraser” someone shouted, and the word rubber was instantly erased from my classroom vocabulary. Once we had an out of town visitor, who apparently did not have his own transportation. ”How did you get into town?” someone asked. “I rode the dog”, he replied. I visualized various versions of the scene. None of them fit. Smiling at my puzzled expression, a friend said, “He took the GreyHound bus”. Aur aaj … ( And today ) : I think nothing of saying I don’t know nothing. When my car is being serviced, I ask my neighbor for a ride, not a lift. When I am in a multi storied building, I take the elevator, not the lift. I also have my floors right. Never again will I spend a quarter of an hour looking for a friend’s apartment. She said she was on the first floor. How was I supposed to know, that first floor in America was the same as ground floor in India! Gradually, I learnt the lingo. I may not know all the rules, but I know that what I thought was Football in India, is Soccer in America, and Football in America is a whole different ball game. Mainstream American lingo has become a natural part of my lingo. As I said, I think nothing of it. But when I visit the homeland and speak it, I drive them …. bananas ! As life in America moved on, the natural events of life began to unfold. But that is another story for another time… www.CityMasala.com CityMasalaSept2010.indd 26 26 September 2010 8/22/2010 9:36:57 PM CityDesiPages advertisements starting at $50 Call 813-476-5415 for more information CityMasala The Leading Lifestyle and Entertainment Magazine for Today’s South Asians Increase your customers by advertising with CityMasala magazine. This time last year, cinemagoers were craving for a good film to watch; the same cannot be said about the current year. Although we are only midway through the year, which seems to be running at the speed of light, there have been a number of films, performances and even songs that are worthy of praise, accolades and even awards. Normally, awards are bestowed to the industry after a year is fully completed. However, who said being normal was fun? Regularity is overrated and thus, instead of waiting a whole year for the awards to be given and received, we at City Masala have decided that the films thus far deserve an award ceremony of its own. Here’s presenting the Mid-Year Awards of 2010. Come on up stars and claim what is rightfully yours! Best Album Best Supporting Actress Winner: I Hate Luv Storys (Vishal-Shekhar) Winner: Zarina Wabab (My Name is Khan) Hands-down, I Hate Luv Storys housed some of the best music thus far. And credit is due where earned, which demands that we credit music composers Vishal Dadlani and Shekhar Rajvani with full marks for their urban album. While the film failed to create any waves critically, it lived up to Dharma Productions standards when it came to music. From the title song, which screamed young, to the romantic Sadka Hua and peppy Jab Mila Tu, the songs in the soundtrack out did each other. Besides being beautiful, Zarina Wahab is ma(a)ha talented. As SRK’s mom in My Name is Khan we finally saw the otherwise forgotten actress, back in action. Her execution of a doting mother, who believed her son was supremely talented, is one of the few admirable aspects of the film. Her performance screamed to casting directors, “Forget me not!” Best Actress Winner: Vidya Balan (Ishqiya) Best Song Finally Vidya Balan comes out of her commercial shell. The actress has been capable of stellar performances and proved it initially with Parineeta and now with Ishqiya. As the raunchy, greedy and yet enchanting Krishna, she manages to captivate the likes of Naseeruddin Shah and Arshad Warsi along with the audiences’ hearts. Winner: ‘Tere Naina’ (Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy) Once again, a Dharma Productions film that may not have worked as well as director-producer Karan Johar would have liked it to, but it has some extremely melodious music. ‘Tere Naina’ from My Name is Khan takes the crown for best song and rightly so. The poignant and emotional number speaks volumes about the lead characters played by Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol. Best Actor Winner: Ajay Devgan (Once Upon a Time in Mumbai) Best Comedian While many would argue that I am cheating here because Once Upon A Time in Mumbai released in August, I believe that Ajay Devgan stole the year with his depiction of Haji Mastan. In a role that could be taken to an extreme, the actor comes out with an award winning performance. With great dignity and poise, he literally became Sultan Mirza and wowed! Winner: Boman Irani (Housefull) Housefull was House-Dud but it did give us an outstanding humorous performance from Boman Irani. While the actor never fails to impress, he was the only actor in the film who managed to bring some substance to a film that otherwise had no premise or plot for the most part. The supporting actor literally stole each and every scene he was in and these include ones with Akshay Kumar. Enough said! Best Film Winner: Rajneeti (Prakash Jha) Best Villain Could you have thought of any other film which could have stolen the biggest award? We think not. Rajneeti wins not only for its immaculate execution and mind-blowing performances but because director Prakash Jha proves that he understands Indian sentiments and politics with a depth that is unfathomable. In a film where the stars could have gotten lost within each other, each one stood out and held their own. Entertaining and a film that makes you think, Rajneeti may have not possessed a commercial theme but certainly made blockbuster money! Winner: Manoj Vajpayee (Rajneeti) Even though this ‘Award Ceremony’ is awarding actors who have performed par excellence in the last six months, we almost guarantee no other actor will bag the Best Villain Award at later award ceremonies. Manoj Vajpayee got into the character’s soul as he depicted the conniving Veerendra Pratap. As he got more tangled in the political webs of Rajneeti, the more evil he became the more we loved him! Now just because we are mid-way into the year, it doesn’t mean you won’t see any more films that are worthy of praise. The year thus far has taught us a couple of lessons. 1. A huge star cast doesn’t necessarily insinuate a blockbuster, i.e. Raavan and Kites. 2. Yeh public sab jaanti hai! When you think a film will not work, they will turn it around and make that film the biggest hit of the year, i.e. Rajneeti. 3. Small casts, low budgets and risks, is a formula that should be exploited, i.e. Love Sex Aur Dhoka, Udaan and Tere Bin Laden. Best Supporting Actor Winner: Arjun Rampal (Rajneeti) Just when you thought he couldn’t get any better, Arjun Rampal is certainly on a roll with his acting career. Arjun Rampal comes back with a dhassu performance in Rajneeti. Not only did he prove with his grey role in the political drama, that he can act and how, but also verified that he is capable of acting in any role. Amongst a mammoth cast, Arjun shines! Until the end of the year, we will see you at the movies! www.CityMasala.com CityMasalaSept2010.indd 28 28 September 2010 8/23/2010 3:23:48 PM CLASSIFIED ADs MATH and SCIENCE TUTORING Elementary to college level. 5+ years of experience. 404-668-7585 or ziya.tutor@ gmail.com.
